S06E04: Burgess must choose between listening to Voight or potential new ally when a ride along goes sideways.
Even though things weren't going as smoothly as he thought they could, after a full day at the precinct, Adam headed towards the unit's locker rooms to find his girlfriend.
He was smiling even before walking in.
-Can I stop by tonight? -he asked as he approached her.
Hailey couldn't help her smile as she put on her coat and looked at him. They spent most nights at her place as Adam usually said that her neighborhood was nicer than his, but she knew he was only doing that so she could be comfortable.
-Three nights in a row? -
-That'd be four nights in a row. - he said counting with his fingers.
-Oh, then forget it. - she said jokingly.
-You're gonna cut me off at four nights in a row? There's no way! - he said as he leaned in to kiss her as she smiled.
Almost by instinct he took a step back as someone opened the door. Hailey was way more uptight than him about anyone from work seeing them being affectionate towards each other, but deep down he knew she was right. They had to keep things as professional as they could.
They both smiled at Kim who walked in to head towards her locker.
-Good night. - he said as she walked past them and they all greeted each other. -
-Hey! - both girls said as they saw each other.
-Long day huh? - Ruzek said, trying to make conversation.
-Did you guys hear? The detective exam was just announced. - Kim told them as she put on her jacket.
-Yeah, I heard something about that. - Adam said, frowning.
-Oh that exam is brutal. - Hailey said.
-Really? - Kim asked, almost dreading the answer.
-Yeah. If you're gonna take it, start studying now. - Hailey said looking at Kim before looking back at Adam. - I'll be outside. - she said before heading out while Adam stayed back. She didn't feel any jealousy towards Kim and she liked giving her boyfriend the space to talk to his former fiancee knowing they were still friends. She respected that he had a past.
-Oh that's encouraging. - he said before nodding. - I'll be right out. -
A few minutes later, Adam jumped in the passenger side of Hailey's car. She put her phone back into her pocket while she looked up at Adam and finally started the car.
-Everything ok? - she asked as she drove away from the station.
-Yeah. Brennan wanted to talk to her. - he explained looking at Hailey.
-First Deputy Brennan? - Hailey asked, confused.
-Yeah. -
-Mmmh. - the blonde as she kept her eyes on the road.
-What? - Adam asked back at her.
-I never trust when the bosses suddenly want to see you. -
-You're too suspicious, babe. - he said, hiding a smile.
-I probably am. Hope I'm wrong though. - but in her experience, when the big boss noticed you, it was never a good thing. She preferred to stay under the radar when it came to that.
The following day, the team had been following the lead regarding a criminal named Clay Young before a shooting started near a residential area.
-So, we recovered a laptop in Clay Young's apartment that traces back to a Gold Coast robbery from two weeks ago. - Jay explained as the team gathered back at the station.
-Well, that's good. But Young's dead. -Hank said, stating the obvious. - Do we have anything on the second offender? -
-Nothing so far. - Kevin replied as Hailey and Adam walked in from the side door. -
-Nah, we got a name. - Adam said.- This is Trent Stow. Tech found his fingerprints all over the Mustang. - he put up Stow's picture on the board as Hailey put up the printed paper that has the offender's fingertips.
-Record? - their boss asked.
-Long and impressive. -Adam said as he looked back at Hank. - He's a repeat violent offender, this guy. -
-Two armed robberies, three narcotics charges. Looks like he's into meth, coke and heroin. - Hailey explained to the team. -
-Alright, that makes sense 'cause the M.E. said they found high doses of meth in Young's system. - Jay said as he held a folder in his hand, sitting on top of Hailey's desk. Kim was walking into the unit's office when Hank spoke up.
-Alright. So we've got two hopped-up junkies robbing to support their habit. Besides drugs, we find a nexus between Stow and Young? -Hank asked Hailey and Adam who had been following up on Stow.
-Yeah. - Hailey nodded. - They were busted ten years ago for a robbery when they were in college at CCU. Stow actually played quarterback for a season. -she pointed at his picture on the board.
-He was a pro-prospect until he beat a kid into a coma at a bar. - Adam followed up the story. - The judge was an alum, so he got off on probation. -
-He's been busted a few times for robberies, never convicted. This kid's been getting a free pass his entire life. -Hailey said, knowing well that the system sometimes didn't work because people in charge weren't applying rules as they should have been.
-Hey Kim, you recognise this guy? - Hank asked the police officer.
-No, all I saw was a hoodie. -she said, shaking her head. She had fully changed back from her blue uniform.
-Alright, bring in Trent Stow. See if the wife of the victim can ID him. -Hank told his team before approaching Burgess to check on her.
Later that night, Hailey was sitting on her living's room couch as Adam set the chinese food they had ordered on plates a few feet away in the kitchen.
-My lady. - he said, grabbing Hailey's attention as he offered her plate before putting two beer bottles on the table and taking a seat next to her. The blonde detective finally looked up, grabbing the plate with one hand while she put her phone on the coffee table with the other. -You ok? -her boyfriend asked before putting some food in his mouth.
Hailey nodded, keeping her eyes on the front. She finally locked eyes with Adam. - I texted Kim, wanted to make sure she was ok. She hasn't texted me back. -
Adam finished chewing his bite of Kung Pao chicken before answering. - I am sure she will, babe. She has a lot on her mind.-
Hailey knew he was probably right, but she couldn't help but worry sometimes. - Let's hope so. -
-I've narrowed down the list of places I want to see to rent. - he said changing the subject, as he leaned back against the back of the couch.
-Have you now? -Hailey looked at him with a smirk on her face. -That's good, babe. -
-I'll check some first and then…-
-And then? - Hailey asked as she put some rice on her mouth.
-I would like you to see the ones I like the most.- Adam was fully aware Hailey didn't feel ready to move in with him. But they had been together for the last year and ever since Al's death, he had learned not to take people or moments for granted.
-Sure. - she nodded as she grabbed her bottle.-
Adam leaned back to give her a kiss on the lips before turning back to look at the tv, feeling her eyes on him.
The following day, after learning some new tips connecting a cleaning house belonging to John Randall to Trent Stow, the Intelligence team headed there to check the place out and talk to the owner.
Jay and Hailey were the first to enter the place, while Ruzek and Antonio waited to back them up.
-Yeah, we're looking for John Randall. - Halstead told one of the guys as he showed the badge hanging on his belt.
The guy pointed to someone as he said. - Back there. -
-John Randall? - Hailey asked as they approached him. The guy looked up at them.- Chicago PD, we just wanna ask you.. - she didn't even get to finish the sentence before Randall started to run. Jeez, she hated when they did that. - Target's running out the back! - she said on her two-way so the team could block the back exit.
As he ran, Randall ended up on top of one of the unit's cars. Antonio hit the breaks, before putting the car in reverse.
-Alright, we got him, we got him. - Adam said on his two way as Antonio drove backwards.
They had to quickly exit the car as soon as Randall started to climb up a fence. -Stop! - Antonio yelled as they chased him.- He's going over! -
-Son of a bitch. -Adam cursed as Antonio hit the wall, hurting his shoulder. - You good? - he asked, checking on him.
-Are you kidding me? - Antonio was clearly in pain, but the suspect was the priority. - Go, man! -
Ruzek nodded once before climbing up to pursue the suspect. He chased him through the sidewalk until Randall crossed the street and was hit by a car. He was almost there, but Hailey was faster than him.
She pinned Randall down in no time. She put her knee over his back, trying to immobilize him, but the guy was resisting her. - You move, I shoot you kneecap. -she yelled at him as she pulled her gun on him.
-Alright, alright, I'm done. - Randall barely said with his face against the pavement.
Adam walked around them, keeping his eyes on the blonde. - You good? -
-Yeah, I'm good. - she assured him.
Adam couldn't help but smile as he looked at her. -Yeah, you are. - he certainly didn't mind the reminder that his girlfriend was not only one of the best detectives he knew, she could also kick your ass.
After closing up the case. Hailey waited for Adam outside the station.
-What happened? I thought Antonio and you were going out for drinks. - she said as she held out her hand to him. Adam was quick to grab it with one of his own, shrugging his shoulders.
-I tried. He wasn't interested. -he explained as they started to walk toward a bar near the station. -Something's up with him. -
Hailey bit her lower lip, shaking her head. - You can't push him, Adam. -
-I know, I know. I just wished he trusted me. -
-Well, you guys haven't been getting that well lately. Give it some time. - she suggested, squeezing his hand. Her blue eyes focused on him as she smiled. - I'll buy you a beer, come on. -
Adam nodded, before letting go of her hand and putting his arm around her shoulders. He knew he could count on her to keep him grounded.
