Courage had initially not moved from his spot for a while ever since the WISE agent revealed a hidden message on the truck. Loid knelt down trying to stir the dog but to no avail. The poor dog was not too different from a deer looking into headlights. The hairs on his back stood on end. It is like some ghost came along and sucked out his soul. "Courage...are you okay?"
While Loid tended to the cowardly dog, Sylvia and the others continued the investigation. The Handler paced back and forth catching herself looking at the clock during odd times. Soon, more agents came in having traced enough information back to form a cohesive map. "Looks like this Katz figure was really busy."
Sylvia crossed her arms. "What have you discovered?"
"Apparently, Katz was something of a serial killer who opened up several businesses not just in Nowhere, but other places around the globe. The first pin is here." The operative placed a pin on the map before continuing. "He opened a motel around here and invited what appears to be around 10 guests. They were never heard from again."
The color in Sylvia's face disappeared. "No bodies were ever found?"
"Apparently spiders were found there. The culprit disappeared before the authorities could arrest him."
The operative placed another pin on the map. "Here, he opened a submarine business to try to put a rival company out of business. No one died there, but some had reported that he tried to blow them all to kingdom come." More pierces were made on the map. "There seems to be no real preference for victims just anyone who was a poor sap was ripe for the picking."
"Then what would this cat have any reason to join a terrorist group? What does he have to gain from assisting in threatening to blow up chunks of the populace?"
The man scratched his balding head. "Who knows? Maybe he was offered half of the profit should they succeed in their goals."
Loid lightly pets Courage's head. "You must have had several traumatizing encounters with him, I assume?"
Courage gradually broke out of his frozen stance but was still on edge. There was no other way around it. He had to come to the awful truth: his worst enemy was not only alive, but now he is working with terrorists. For what reason, the dog was not sure, but he did not like it. Heavy, slurred chuckling broke out into the room, alerting Courage. He and Loid looked around seeing that the Cajun Fox regained consciousness and was giggling like a schoolgirl.
"What are you laughing at, packrat?" Loid asked.
"I just think it's all funny, mista officer sir! The boss knew how you and that mutt would take on this mission, so that is why he has somethin' planned for the little granny!"
Courage's jaw hit the floor. Loid stormed over holding the fox by his shoulders. "What does he have planned for Ms. Bagge?"
"I ain't tellin' nothin'. I'd rathers die than tell you Westalian swines!"
Loid angrily slammed the Cajun Fox's head on the interrogation table. "You are lucky that I am not considering making you into a fine coat."
The fox only laughed his butt off further. "I am shakin' in mah boots!"
Sylvia frowned. "Lock him up, boys."
Two agents manhandled the conniving canine and walked him out of the room. "Whatever the case, we need to get the antidote for the nanobots," Sylvia noted.
The computer sat alongside Anya and Becky during one of their teacher's lectures. The man, with chalk in hand, went to the board and started scribbling numbers on the flat surface. His chalk tapped lightly a few times as he wrote. Anya was already at a loss, though it was more had to do with Damian. During lunch, she did try to confront Damian to apologize on the behalf of the computer, but he was hard-headed and refused to hear her out. She had to do something. The fate of her dad's mission was in her hands.
"Okay, so, 5/3 times 1/10. Let's see who can answer this one."
He scanned the room and noticed the odd robotic student in his vision. "How about...you?"
"1/6, sir," it replied. The other students start cheering for the foreign exchange student. Despite it being the first day, the computer was already climbing the ranks to being the first in his class. It was as though the answers were flowing through him, which to be fair, it was since the computer was connected to a whole network and also uploaded information on the academy as well.
"That is correct," the teacher replied, "keep it up, and you will be my top student in no time."
Damian and his friends scowled at the student. Anya could easily read what they were thinking, but she'd rather not like to think about what they would do to get their revenge. Somehow, she just had to keep the computer occupied while she could apologize to the second son.
There came a knock at the door. The teacher, noticing it, put his chalk gently on the board's shelf and opened it. In walked Henry Henderson, the housemaster of dormitory 3 in the Cecile Hall. He walked with the sophistication of a gentleman, but he did appear slightly bothered.
"Oh, Mr. Henderson, what can I do for you?"
"I have been told that there was some...inelegance coming from the students."
Anya looked back at Damian and his two cohorts of polar sizes seeing them smirking. They must have been the reason for the housemaster's abrupt appearance. He walked over to the two girls and artificial intelligence eyeing each one before looking directly at the computer. He was temporarily stunned to see his reflection bouncing off the computer's flatscreen, but he caught himself. "I have heard that you were poking fun at your classmates' physical appearances?"
Anya tensed. She knew how wise-cracking the computer could be despite only meeting it for a short time, so she was readying herself to be caught in the storm. However, it never came. "So, you must be Mr. Henderson, am I being correct?"
"I am," he replied, "since this is your first offense, you will be receiving a Tonitrus, but it will not be as hard-hitting."
The computer nodded. "I understand. But may I say something?"
"Sure, what is it?"
"I like how you walked in with a perfect posture. You must be a very elegant man."
Henderson slightly blushed before turning away and coughing into his fisted hand. "Brilliant observation."
"Since you are very knowledgeable about the inner machinations of the academy, perhaps you can escort me on a tour?"
The computer turned to Anya and tipped his head almost if he were blinking without eyes. Anya nodded back in response. Once school was let out for the day, the computer accompanied Mr. Henderson on a tour around the school grounds. Becky frowned at her friend for her naiveté. "Why do you want to apologize to Damian?"
Anya would have liked to say the truth that she was trying to at least make amends with the second son for the sake of her father's mission, but that would have to include her explaining to her friend that she had telepathy and that she read her mind all the time, even when she had those dirty thoughts about her adoptive father. That would just be opening a can of worms.
"Anya has to," she lamented.
"And there is no talking you out of this, is there?"
Anya shook her head making the brunette sigh. "Sure, if you feel that is the right thing to do. I am heading home if you need me."
At the end of the day, the littlest Forger family member waited for Damian's friends to leave his side. Once they were, she walked over. Damian was looking around a bit after they left anticipating his butler would be the one to escort him home. At least someone cared enough about him to consider bringing him home. His butler would always try to insist that his father loved him, but what kind of father reacts with little sympathy when their own child was clocked in the face?
"Second son..."
Damian turned around being familiar with the voice of the young girl. "Where's that friend of yours? Trying to find something else to make me hate myself?"
Anya shook her head. "He thought Anya was in trouble, but he did not mean what he said."
"Hmph." Damian turned away unconvinced. "If he was sorry, he would have apologized himself."
Damian goes to walk away, but Anya grabbed his wrist. "Anya is really sorry!"
She had those big puppy dog eyes popping from her sockets and the tears giving a glow to them. Damian stared into her eyes until he got flustered and turns away. "Maybe he was right. I shouldn't blame you for what he said."
Anya stood there partially confused. "I appreciate you stopping by." His cheeks flushed tomato red. "A-anyway, I will go now."
Anya nodded and she turned to leave as well. She had an extra step in her pace and was radiating energy and good vibes. She had solved her problem with the second son which meant that the world was at peace once more. "Hey."
Anya looked back at Damian. His blushing was still evident, but he stared at his feet when Anya was returning. "What is it?"
Damian fidgeted around in his pockets for a bit and pulled out a letter. Without sharing eye contact, he gave it to Anya without a word. Anya stared at it for a bit and then back at Damian. "What is it?"
Damian's blushing disappeared as him being slightly agitated. "Oh my god, it means that I am inviting you to my birthday party!"
Anya gasped. She processed it slowly imagining it to be an elaborate prank and/or dream. "Are you sure?"
Damian still refused to glance at the pink-haired girl before him. "Hope you can make it."
With that, he left leaving Anya with a true surprise.
Muriel hummed as she walked into her room with Courage by her side. The dog had a frown glued to his face remembering everything from the Cajun Fox experience. Katz had something in store for Muriel but he would never elaborate on what his intentions were. He must be extra-observant just in case the red feline would attempt to strike whether in their sleep or any other inconvenient time.
Eustace had accumulated so much money from the candy he stole, he had piles of money on the couch he wallowed in. He heard the door open, but he lazily laid in his money pool. "You're back, Muriel?"
"My dear, where did you get all that money?" Muriel asked.
"I am an entrepreneur, Muriel," he casually explained, "we'll be in so much dough we won't even HAVE to go back to Nowhere."
Muriel did not like the sound of that at all. "Just as long as you are making an honest living, I will support it."
Courage stared at the grumpy old man for a moment before walking past him. The computer was still being used at the Forger residence so that meant that he could not use it to access the internet. He found his mind wandering back to Loid telling him that, until they could infiltrate the factory and steal the antidote, Courage had to be on high alert. Loid so far has not let him down, but that goes with being the best at his craft.
"I might give the Forger family some of our curry sometime later," Muriel said. "But I am exhausted. Good night, Eustace."
Eustace mumbled something and buried himself into the waves of dollars. Courage sighed. If only he knew.
"Welcome home, Mr. Loid," Yor announced.
"Sorry for the long wait," Loid elaborated, "was held up at work."
Yor nodded in agreement. "Well, I am going to go take a bath and get to bed."
Anya pats Bond's head with him burying the small girl into his fur in a fuzzy hug. As her father walked by, she heard his mind. "Tomorrow, I will infiltrate the factory to stop Jumping Jack from detonating the nanobots."
Anya's eyes widened. Nano-what? She quietly walked behind her dad to hear more. "What kind of monster can put dangerous substances like that into candy?"
What? There was something dangerous in the candy? Anya wanted to scream but that would make her father catch on that she was eavesdropping on him. So, she slammed her mouth shut. But if the candy that was being sold actually contained these dangerous nanobots, then that meant...Anya gulped. Damian and the other kids attending the party could get infected with them and possibly die. Anya rubbed her temples. If Jumping Jack succeeded, then she could kiss world peace goodbye. She had to do something and fast.
Thinking about what to do, she recalled her mother talking about going to the mall to buy some things. She knew that she shouldn't even consider running away because she was almost killed by Kepler that one time, but if she did nothing, then the bad guys would win and Loid could possibly be captured by Jumping Jack. Nodding, she knew what she had to do now.
