As the building commenced, I climbed a rocky ridge and watched all the building go on. "Well, I guess I'll leave them to get their hands all red and raw," I said. I suddenly found myself humming a familiar song that sounded remarkably Latin to human ears. I closed my eyes and imagined me and my friends having fun in our fort, celebrating the joys and victory of bombing the BBC for what they have done to our show. Just as I got to the second verse, a rock fell from under my hand and I fell backwards onto the ground again. As I got up, I saw a little scarlet red pool before me. I looked at my hand. I had cut it, and blood was coming out of it. Unlike most girls my age, I tried hard not to cry, but instead I kept strong as my tears brimmed. As I wiped my tears I could feel blood drip down my cheeks, my tears turning scarlet to match.
I turned over and saw Luke lying next to a patch of flowers, looking strangely calm. Feeling concerned for my friend, I went up to him and lay down next to him. At once, I forgot the pain of my cut hand and felt peaceful with Luke lying beside me. "Decided to give up on building the fort?" I asked. "No. Us kids always keep our heads high and persevere. Our kings and queens always told us that before they abandoned us." "Well, I'm never going to see my queen again." I said, quite sure now. Luke sat up and looked at the cut on my hand. "Badly scarred. Werewolves have worse scars than humans. What scars us most is the kings and queens that have guided us through the years. They're not here for us now, but here's something you must remember." Luke touched the tip of one of the yellow flowers growing in the dry ground. "Are those your kings and queens?" I asked. "Yes. Look at these flowers. They're the kings and queens we know. Some of them died or left a long time ago, and left us to become independent loners, fending for ourselves in the wild. These flowers grow all around the forest, and they are the kings and queens. So whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings and queens will always be there to guide you…and so will I." "Will Resus and Cleo guide me too?" "Yes, and Luella and Six and everyone." Luke embraced me in a big hug, but as my scarred hand touched my T-shirt, blood covered it. It was my blood connecting to Luke's, a human's blood with a werewolf's.
Once my hand had stopped bleeding, I went to check on the building of the fort. Dixon was looking at a stick, not sure what to do with it. "You know, Dixon, you can do anything with a stick, but you can't break it in half." I advised. "Am I supposed to put it in the fort?" asked Dixon, looking puzzled. "No, you can throw it far and see how far it goes. Ready?" I threw the stick high in the air, but then someone caught it. It was Dig and Lulu! "Hello, boy!" I said in a coochie-coo voice, "Whoze a good widdle boy? Eh? Who's a good widdle boy?" Dixon was tickling Lulu under the chin. "And Lulu's a good widdle girl too." Dig licked my face and nuzzled me, and I fell over and laughed loudly as Dig crawled all over me.
Later, I crept up to Luella while she wasn't looking. I had a determined look on my face. I wanted to surprise her. Cleo and Six were watching in the distance, concerned about what I'm going to do next. "Don't tell me she's going to shout at Luella." said Six. "It's okay, Six, what else could happen?" laughed Cleo, but I jumped out at Luella and screamed "Boo!" Luella screamed, shy as ever now. Cleo and Six heard her screams and raced to help her. "We're coming!" cried Cleo. "It's okay, we'll get you some help." "No…no!" groaned Luella, "It's not! Aaaaaaaa, our leader made me scared! She's a beast! She's a beast!" "She's no beast, she's my friend, and I should know better when to become BFFs with you!" Luella hid her head in her hands and began to cry. Cleo comforted her with a hug. "I'm sorry, Luella, I'm just glad she didn't give you a panic attack like last time." Six joined the hug too.
I watched in awe and shock at this. I couldn't believe this was happening. Cleo had abandoned the boys to hang out with the girls. Was this for real? At once, I ran up to the girls and screamed, "YOU SHOULD'VE NEVER GONE ON THAT CAMPING TRIP!" Cleo, Luella and Six looked around in surprise. "What are you talking about, leader?" "This…this relationship. You promised me Luke, Resus, you and I would be together, and now look what happened! You want to hang out with people of your own gender!" "I can hang out with girls if I want to." "But that's forcing it!" Luella and Six gasped. "They forced you to befriend other girls, that was for a few episodes only! One time you're hanging around with Luella, the other time you're hanging around with Six." "That's because we call ourselves BFFs." said Six. "No. Luke, Resus, Cleo and I are BFFs, you two are secondary characters in the story of life. There won't be a complete bunch of bananas without our third banana." "And what third banana are you talking about?" I pointed and yelled, "CLEO!" There was a long silence, which was immensely broken by Luella gasping, "Oh my god."
I fell to my knees and began to cry. "Please…Cleo…don't be mad…" But Cleo had a trusting look on her face. She picked me up and saw the scar on my hand. Then she hugged me. "Violet, Violet, Violet…" she said in a soft voice. "What do all those CBBC characters have that we don't have?" Luella huddled against Six for comfort. Cleo turned to the girls. "You two stay behind and commence work on our fort. I've got to teach our goddess a lesson." As Cleo turned and left with me, Luella ran up to me. "Luella?" "Violet…good luck." she sighed, and ran back to continue building the fort. As I journeyed with Cleo through a Sakura tree forest, it was a beautiful sight - flower petals fell all around us, showering us in sweet scents as we wandered through the forest. However, as Cleo and I walked hand in hand, I looked at the scar on my hand. It still hurt quite a lot. Suddenly, visions filled my head. Visions. Visions of lions killing each other, people looting and trashing the streets and a silhouetted lioness with a limp opening her eye in the light. As I snapped out of my vision, I said softly to Cleo, "Cleo….can you wrap your bandages round my wound?" Cleo stopped. "What do you mean?" she asked. "This scar. It hurts." "Hurt it will, but I'm afraid I can't do it." "No! You have to! I'll die of blood loss." "You've given your blood to our kings and queens. The blood flows in the roots of the flowers, and you've earned your mark." "The mark of a goddess?" "That mark is of bravery, courage and friendship, everything you've ever achieved to become this way."
Cleo and I made our way to the beach, where we stood over a sandy hill and looked over the beach in the distance. I was excited, and gave a great cheetah roar. "WATER!" I shouted, "WATER WATER WATER!" "Not so loudly, Vi, we haven't any water at the moment…" I groaned in disappointment. "But I can give you this!" And on final word, she pushed me down the sandy hill, and down I rolled, screaming and laughing with joy. "Look at me!" I cried, squealing with laughter. Cleo leapt onto the edge of the hill and rolled down with me, screaming with laughter. I tumbled head over heels on the soft sand, and held onto Cleo. We screamed and yelled in joy, until we reached the bottom. Cleo grabbed me as I tickled her, and she shrieked with laughter. "Stop! Stop it! Not near my bandaged bits!" "You're the most ticklish mummy I've ever seen, where shall I tickle you? Under your arms, or do they smell?" "No they don't! Please, stop!"
Cleo pushed me off onto the sand, and we both laughed, until our laughter turned to soft, heavy breathing. It was very relaxing looking up at the seagulls circling in the sky above us, listening to the waves splash over the beach, and lying next to one of my best friends. I felt safe with Cleo by my side. I was only six, but Cleo was only a teenager. A 4,000 year old teenager, a lot older than me like most of the kids in the tribe. I never knew I could look up to her and Luke like they were my brother and sister. Resus would be my brother too. "Finally. We're together again." said Cleo, suddenly sounding sorrowful. "Why?" I asked. "It feels kind of awkward being around girls. Our show wasn't originally aimed for girls, but when our second season came out the producers wanted to add in a bit more girl power, so they partnered me up with the other girls in Scream Street." "Does it make you sad?" I asked. "No. There was a rumour that spread about the camping trip I never should've been on." "You mean, when you were in the creepy forest?" "Yeah. That episode put me off nature for a while."
"The truth is that when I fell asleep with Luella and Six in that cabin after the events of that episode, I had nightmares of Resus and Luke leaving me because they couldn't stand being with other girls. I saw a tent in the distance, and I saw Luke and Resus' shadows. I woke the girls up and told them that I was going to explore the tent. When Luella asked me what was wrong, I angrily lashed out at her and punched her in the face. I said to her I had no time to be with girls, because being with boys makes me a true girl. Luella started crying, and blood dripped out of her mouth, as I ran to join my real BFFs. All that was left for her comfort was Six. The producers never gave me time to apologise to Luella and just let me keep that blip a secret."
I looked at Cleo. Tears were seeping from her eyes. "She was one of my friends, not just my BFF. I didn't refer to her as a BFF when the original Scream Street aired on TV. That's the big difference between knowing someone and knowing who's your friend." "You should apologise to her." I said calmly. "The goddesses on the moon will be proud of you. Very, very proud." Cleo looked at me, then she recalled what she belted out at Cleo the night after production on that dreaded Scream Street episode.
"I'm going to hang out with Luke and Resus!"
"But Cleo, I thought you were my-"
"SHUT UP!"
PUNCH!
"You are not my BFFs anymore! I'm going to hang out with the one true friends I cherish the most."
"But Cleo, what about me?"
"You've hung out with me long enough. I know what I had to do now."
"No, wait, don't go!"
"I have to apologise. She is my friend after all. If I apologise to her, I promise not to call her a BFF in front of your face anymore, or in front of Luke and Resus. I'll just called her fourth banana. Promise?" "Promise." I said. Cleo and I linked out pinky fingers together, as if to make it a pinky promise. Then Cleo stood up and lifted me onto her shoulders, carrying me back to the fort. When we arrived the fort was as grand as ever. "Wow, wee." I said, my mouth gaping open. "The fort's finished! Woohoo-hoo!" cried Cleo. "Cleo, you're back!" cried Resus, "Where were you?" "I've got some friends to apologise to." she said, and raced into the tunnel. I followed, and soon we were in the fort with all our friends - Luke, Resus, Luella, Dixon and Six. Cleo looked at Luella. She was unsure of what to do, but there was only one chance to redeem herself after that unfortunate accident. She approached Luella and said, "I'm sorry for punching you in the face." "Why? I have no remorse." sobbed Luella. "No remorse? Luella, I'm sorry. Luke and Resus are more important to me." "Then who's important? Me or the boys?" Cleo looked over at Luke and Resus, then over at Luella and Six. There was a long silence. Then she said: "Both of you." Luella squealed and ran into Cleo's arms for a hug. Six, Luke and Resus ran to join the hug too. "Well done for apologising, Cleo," I said, "You've united your friends together in perfect peace and harmony."
Suddenly, the cut on my hand began to glow, and the fort began to rumble with the sound of a familiar lion's roar. My eyes began to glow too, and I began to speak through the voice of a limping lioness: "Have mercy on me, lord, for I am faint, heal me, lord, for my bones are in agony." Luke and the others gasped in shock, then as the glow faded, I ran to the centre of the fort. "What, was that?" asked Resus. "No idea," said Dixon, "But it must be something to do with this whole goddess thing." "Hey, guys," I called, "Come and check this out!" Everyone ran to the centre of the fort and found me lying in the warmth of it all. "Aaaaaaaa," I sighed, "This is cosy." "That's just how we made it." said Resus. "You guys make it, you join me in my revolution." I said. Everyone lay beside me, even Dig and Lulu, and we all snuggled up next to each other. I looked up at the ceiling. I heard the sounds of nature outside. I felt safe snuggled in between Luke and Luella. It was heaven. Then suddenly, I had an idea. "You know what needs improving around here to make it cosy?" I asked. "Pillows. Luella, can you magic up some pillows?" "Why, of course." Luella waved her hands in a mystical manner, and from out of nowhere appeared lots of soft, comfy pillows. "This feels nice," I calmly said. "We have to be thankful for what we have got, and that goes to people who have mastered magic. Luella, how on earth did you master this whole magic thing so perfectly?" "My queen once taught me a candlelit ritual that'll give me confidence. It filled my entire body with pure energy, and I didn't even know what happened to me - until I was left alone." Everyone sighed. "Oh, that's sad." I said. "I know a candlelit ritual that'll thank the goddesses. I perform it everytime we've accomplished something great. And that something great is that fort we built. Violet, do you want to lead us in the spell?" I couldn't dare say no.
Luella magicked up a candle in the middle of the fort, covered in ancient patterns. We all sat in a circle around the candle and joined hands. "The spell is in Bulgarian, so Violet, you understand Greek, right?" "Mmmm-hmmm," I said. "Then go ahead." I took a deep breath, breathing in the warm smell of the candle. Then I chanted:
"Blagodarya vi bogini,
Ti ni dade kurazha,
Silata, strassta,
Do produlzha napred…"
Then the others chanted along with me. The candle glowed brighter and brighter, and our chanting got louder and louder, until a huge beam of light shot up from the candle and out through the fort, up into the sky, until it disappeared in a shockwave of light. Thunder flashed, and the sky darkened. "There! It's all done!" I laughed, but then I noticed Luke, Resus and Cleo were gone. "Hold on, guys, I've got to go and find them," I said, and raced out of the fort to go find them. There was another long silence. "What do they have to do with her again?" asked the ever clueless Dixon.
