Role Reversal Rivalry
A Different Detective and Phantom Thief
Part 5: Thief & Thief
Sonoko nearly fainted into Ran's arms, the moment there were two Kaitou KIDs on the stage. Nakamori-keibu looked close to an aneurism as his own eyes wandered back and forth between the two KIDs. So did everyone else. It had started out normal enough and with one KID.
The showmanship, the charms, the screaming crowd. Ran was used to it by now. But then KID started talking about a special challenge and in a puff of smoke, a second KID had appeared.
"I'm pretty sure I had this exact dream before," whispered Sonoko doe-eyed.
"Fairly sure Nakamori-keibu did too, only that his was a nightmare," offered Ran amused.
The police was frozen in place. Well, not frozen. Some blue goo glued them together and against the wall. All in perfect view of the two thieves, who were currently out-performing each other.
"Can you tell which one is the real KID?" asked Ran curiously.
If anyone could tell a fake from the real one, it ought to be Sonoko. After all, she was the greatest KID fan in existence. She knew more about the thief than the police did, Ran suspected. Sonoko's face screwed up as she stared at the two thieves with the utmost concentration. Her eyes darted back and forth between them, looking at their height, their statue, the movement of their hands.
"They're so... I don't..." Sonoko made a distressed noise. "No, I can't. They both seem equally skilled and equally attractive, look at the width of their shoulders, their height."
A body-double that looked exactly like KID and had the skills to back it up? Unless KID had actually managed to clone himself, this might be his greatest trick yet.

About a week ago, Shinichi had finally come clean to Kaito about his little plan. A heist, with two KIDs. Kaito, in the role of a master-thief. At first he'd laughed in his boyfriend's face. Kaito had never stolen a thing in his life, he couldn't even imagine running away from the police.
"It's not as hard," promised Shinichi with a smile. "Look. I had an identical costume made for you. Try it on, let us rehearse a trick together. Come on."
Reluctantly had Kaito put on the suit. It looked good on him. Not as good as it did on Shinichi, but that was the boyfriend bias talking, probably. Kaito just loved seeing Shinichi in the white get-up.
"The cape is ridiculous," pointed Kaito out. "I look like some comic book villain."
Shinichi rolled his eyes at him. "Well, you gotta blame your dad for that one. This was his design."
That made Kaito pout a little. "Okay, okay, okay. We can do this. What do you want to do?"
The smirk on Shinichi's lips got to Kaito. So much so that Kaito couldn't resist to pull his boyfriend into a slow, deep kiss. When they parted, they stared each other in the eyes for a long moment.
"Kaito," Shinichi glared. "Don't distract me like that."
"Why—y?" Kaito pouted, chasing after Shinichi's lips. "You're very attractive in this silly suit. And your lips are incredibly kissable, you know? That's not my fault. Not. At. All."
He punctuated each of the last three words with a kiss against Shinichi's lips. It was weird. He'd never thought himself cheesy or sappy like that, but with Shinichi? He felt like he was floating, like he had found something he hadn't even known he was missing and life got easier. Solutions seemed so much clearer too. As though he could actually find the answers he was looking for, as long as he had Shinichi at his side. Because Shinichi was working toward the same goal as him.

Every day for a week, Shinichi rehearsed with Kaito. With more or less concentration on Kaito's part; he could be distracted so very easily. Which was confusing, frustrating and flustering to equal parts. The thign that made it all the more frustrating was just how... natural Kaito was at it.
"Why are you glaring?" Kaito kissed the crease between Shinichi's eyebrows. "Am I not living up to teach's expectations...?"
"The opposite," Shinichi huffed at the confused look his boyfriend threw him. "I spent months trying this stuff, learning it. And you just... you pick it up with such ease. It's a bit... frustrating."
"Oh my gosh, you're adorable," Kaito cooed. "I'm sorry I'm a better thief than you-"
"I did not say that," Shinichi interrupted him right away. "You have yet to actually steal something. But you have the potential for it. Now, concentrate, Kaito. Please."
Kaito pouted, which was decidedly too cute, but at least he concentrated this time around.

And then they got to go out together. Stealing, as a duo. Absolutely giving Nakamori-keibu something close to either a panic or heart attack, possibly both. Two KIDs at once? Probably the inspector's worst nightmare. And Shinichi was not trying to be gleeful about it, but there was something funny about the face Nakamori had made when he saw them both.
Obviously had they suspected one to be a dummy at first, then an assistant. But Kaito was a quick learner, he had picked up everything Shinichi had taught him. Everything they needed for this heist.
And the thing was... Shinichi loved that. Loved going out with Kaito to steal. The way they worked together, how smooth everything worked out as they passed the gem and the game around from one to the other. Somehow, everything was so much easier when he had Kaito at his side.
And the fans were going wild! The screaming was so intense. Shinichi had gotten so used to having the spotlight to himself, to having fans cheer him on. The way that had increased with Kaito there though? It was kind of amazing. It was also ecstatic to share that experience with someone.
He had shared it with Sonoko, to an extend, her being his assistant and all. But this? Him and Kaito were like equal partners and Shinichi felt – he felt lighter.
"You were absolutely amazing," declared Shinichi in awe, when they met on the rooftop.
Kaito, in that outfit, the outfit that looked so silly to Shinichi but oh boy, did it look good on Kaito. Kaito, who he only knew in casual clothes or his school uniform, but he looked so... grown up, so elegant and serious, as Kaitou KID? It was impossible not to pull Kaito into a kiss right then and there. Kaito smiled into the kiss, happily reciprocating it until Nakamori-keibu disturbed them.
"Damn it, KID, we got you surrounded," barked the inspector out. "Both of you."
Which was Kaito and Shinichi's cue to jump off the roof and head away into opposite directions.

Kaito liked waking up next to Shinichi. Just holding his boyfriend in his arms. Both had fallen into bed after the heist last night, out like a candle the moment they hit the mattress. Kaito hadn't anticipated just how exhausting such a heist would be. But it was a good kind of exhaustion!
Still, he was the first one awake, Shinichi smiling and laying on his chest. Carefully did Kaito sneak out of the bed to get coffee going and get the newspaper in. Armed with both, he headed back to bed and snuggled back up to his boyfriend, whose nose started wiggling at the scent of coffee.
"...Coffee?" Shinichi's voice was sleepy but pleased.
"Of course," Kaito grinned and pressed a kiss to the top of Shinichi's head.
And then his eyes trailed over to the front page of the newspaper. He stared for a second before he started cackling. The image was of Kaito and Shinichi kissing, beneath it ULTIMATE ACT OF NARCISSISM! KID KISSING KID. Oh boy, that was going to break Sonoko's heart.
"Why are you laughing...?" Shinichi snuggled closer to rest his chin on Kaito's shoulder. "...Ah."
"Was just thinking that Suzuki-san is going to love this one."
Shinichi groaned and buried his face in Kaito's shoulder.

Tracking down the Black Organization was tough. Even with the two of them working together, though at least now they had moral support in each other. It took them, many months and the cooperation of among others the FBI, to really get anything moving.
But two KIDs actually made it work faster than expected. Both were still high school students, they had lives to live aside from also trying to take down an organization of criminals. Some nights, Shinichi had exams to do and Kaito would go out as KID, other nights, Kaito gave himself an alibi by spending all day with Aoko and Nakamori while Shinichi went out as KID.
It was honestly shocking to Shinichi when they realized just how big all of this was though. That the people they were hunting was barely a small sub-branch of this Black Organization. Where all these tendrils went, digging deep into Japan and spreading even far beyond.
Mostly, they were assassins. Very effective assassins. Toichi was barely the tip of the iceberg.
"That's it," Kaito's voice wavered a little. "It's... really over?"
Shinichi had an arm around Kaito. The two KIDs stood on a rooftop, watching from above how Snake was taken in, cuffed and half unconscious after putting up a fight. Toichi was the tip of the iceberg, but he was what Shinichi and Kaito cared about. Yes, they wanted all of these assassins taken down, but none more than Snake. The man who killed Kaito's father, Shinichi's mentor.
"That's it," agreed Shinichi. "It's... over. It's finally over."
Kaito sagged against Shinichi, relief overcoming him. Shinichi caught his boyfriend, holding him close, even though he felt like losing her stance too. It was finally over.

Kaito frowned, throwing a small bouncy ball up against the wall and catching it again. Life was... boring without KID. Twice so now. He had spent so much time chasing after Kaitou KID and then he had spent months being Kaitou KID, together with Shinichi.
"Are you... okay?"
Kaito turned to look at his boyfriend after a moment. "What? Yeah. Yeah, I am."
"You're restless," Shinichi raised one eyebrow, carding his fingers through Kaito's unruly hair. "You're... Is it a case? If you can't crack it, I could help you."
Shinichi smirked teasingly and Kaito swatted at him. "How dare you. I can solve my own cases, you know. Besides, I do robberies, you do murders."
Which, they insisted upon. Divided jurisdiction, since murders made Kaito squeamish. And robberies bored Shinichi – partially because he was so used to committing them himself now.
"I think I miss it," admitted Kaito after a beat. "Being KID, I mean. Chasing KID."
"Mh..." Shinichi put the book he'd been holding in his other hand down. "I... suppose there was a lot of things we... You did a lot of good. I was always focused on the mission, but the cases you found."
Kaito had gone a bit above and beyond, targeting art-forgeries and other cheats, stolen jewelry so it would make its way back to its original owner. These type of thing. Because at his heart, Kaito was still a detective, chasing thieves. This was a very good way of taking care of the ones he knew but couldn't prove enough to bring them down himself. Putting them in the spotlight like that.
"Nobody says KID has to stop," offered Shinichi after another moment.
"Mh..." Kaito tilted his head, grinning a bit. "Guess you're right."
Author's note: Okay but next is really gonna be the last chapter on this story! Magician and magician ;)
