A/N: This is the second part of the last chapter. There will be a 3rd part to this. I don't own any of the characters except my own.
Hero – Part 2
They had admitted Nadia for observation and she had had a police officer at her door. Trudy was still there and Hank was still in surgery. Sam found out where they were and knocked before she came in.
"Hey, Sam."
"Olivia. Sergeant."
"Deputy Superintendent."
"Noah."
"Hi."
"Any news on Hank?"
"He's still in surgery."
"This must be Nadia."
"That's me."
"I'm Sam. I'm Hank's boss."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too. I am more than likely going to keep the Intelligence Unit on the case even though Hank was one of the victims."
"Ok. Can I speak with you for a minute?"
"Of course."
Olivia and Sam went out into the hallway.
"I think Nadia's mother was one of the victims I helped. From what I could remember, there was an Order of Protection involved. My Sergeant is looking into that first thing in the morning. Jay told me Casey and Severide didn't think it was a structural issue."
"It appears there were bomb fragments found outside and around Ms. Samson's vehicle as well as on the roof of the building. We don't think she did it but she or possibly even her daughter may have been the intended target."
"Jay told me not to let Nadia out of my sight and we now have the guards on her door."
"There is more of a police presence at all the entrances to the hospital as well."
"Did you see the text messages?"
"I did. I told Detective Halstead to keep me updated on anything they find. Reporters have been snooping around and trying to get info on the hero cop as well. I keep telling them that CPD will give a news conference when we know more. I or anyone else with CPD will not give away Hank's identity because I know he values his privacy as well as yours and your son's."
"Thank you. He hates reporters."
"I can't say that I blame him."
"He doesn't do what he does to be recognized for it. He does it because it's his job to protect the citizens of this city. He also has the need to protect the members of his squad. I feel the same way about my job."
"I know what Officer Atwater went through with that other unit and I probably would have done the same thing he did. Some cops want the fame and glory and some just want to stay quietly in the background."
"I've known both."
"Unfortunately, so have I. I prefer the ones that would rather stay in the background."
"Definitely."
"I did tell the Intelligence Unit about the reporters and said if anyone starts asking them questions to refer them to me. I told the Fire Department the same thing."
"Thank you. Noah knows not to talk to anyone. I can usually handle myself with reporters but I hate giving news conferences. If anyone asks me anything, I'll tell them to contact you. If you need my squad's help with anything, I'm sure they will be more than willing to help out in any way they can."
Then Jay came in again.
"Damn, I wish these vultures would back off."
"What have you found out?"
"We got a match and the person was recently paroled but is wanted by the NYPD and NY State Police for violating his parole by leaving the state."
"What were the charges?"
"Sexual assault and one of his vics was Caroline Samson. He has a connection to a Jenna Samson."
"Nadia told me it was just her and her mom after her grandfather passed."
"Maybe she is a cousin or a sister or something but maybe they didn't get along. From what we could find on Jenna Samson, she has been in and out of jail for drugs. We went to Caroline's residence and the place had been trashed. We had the place dusted for prints but so far, nothing came up. We did find a hidden key to a safety deposit box at a bank. We contacted State's Attorney Jeffries to get a warrant to be able to access it."
Then Peter Stone came in.
"Olivia."
"Peter."
"How's Hank?"
"Still in surgery. You got your job back here?"
"I did. Here is your warrant, Detective."
"Thanks. We probably won't be able to check that out until morning."
"Actually, the Bank President is waiting for your call. He happens to play golf with Mark."
"Thanks."
"Don't thank me. Thank him."
"Keep us posted."
"I will."
Jay left again.
"So, how's Noah?"
"He's great. He's in the other room."
Noah saw Peter and came running out of Nadia's room.
"Peter!"
"Hey, kiddo."
Noah wrapped his arms around Peter and gave him a big hug.
"How've you been?"
"Good. I'm in dancing now."
"Wow! That's great. What's going on with you, Olivia?"
"I'm a Captain now."
"Wow! Congratulations!"
"Thanks but of course it comes with more headaches. Carisi is now our ADA. Elana Barth stepped down from the bench and is now a Defense Attorney. He won his first case against her. Barba is now a Defense Attorney as well and Carisi won a case against him. He also went up against Rita Calhoun and got the conviction. He can definitely hold his own against a former ADA and former Judge."
"That's great."
"Hank and I got married a year and a half ago when we went away for Spring Break and we've been trying to navigate a long distance marriage. He's planning to retire in a month."
"I did hear Hank was retiring. How's the rest of your squad?"
"Fin is in a serious relationship. They were going to get married but decided not to. Rollins is in a relationship with Carisi and I couldn't be happier for them. I think their relationship started when Fin and Phoebe were supposed to be getting married."
"That's great. It was a little obvious there was something between them."
"Yeah, there was. She got upset when he left SVU for the DA's office. He was beside himself when she was taken hostage by Frank Bucci. I'm glad she didn't marry Billie's father. He was a jerk."
"I do remember hearing about the Frank Bucci thing. That was something with his daughters?"
"Yeah."
Olivia told Peter the story about what had happened."
"Wow! I remember that about Billie's father too."
"She wanted Carisi there more than she did Al."
"Mom, I'm hungry."
"Ok. We'll do something in a few minutes."
"Ok."
"Olivia, I'm going to head out. When you hear anything about Hank, let me know."
"I will."
Sam left and Noah went back into Nadia's room.
"Listen, I wanted to apologize for how I left things. I never should have done what I did."
"It's ok."
"No, it's not. I won't lie. I had started developing feelings for you even though I knew you were in a relationship with someone else, who I happen to know quite well. I'm surprised the first time Hank saw me after that, he didn't want to kill me."
"He was a little amused by it though. It did make him feel better that you were around when he wasn't, so someone could keep an eye on us."
"I did hear about Ed Tucker. I'm sorry."
"Thanks. That's been hard especially with the way it happened. He had 9/11 related cancer and didn't want to be a burden to his wife. He had just gotten married maybe 6 months before his death. I'm glad I got to see a side of him that not too many people have seen. Amanda and Fin even had a hard time with his death."
"And Noah?"
"It was hard on him too. I had told him that Ed was sick and he seemed to understand that. It was hard when I had to tell him that he killed himself. Hank was there with me when I told him. I hadn't seen much of Ed after we broke up but he came to accept that I was with Hank. My feelings for Hank were part of the reason we broke up. Hank was a constant presence in my life ever since we met but we weren't sure we could handle being in a long distance relationship. A lot of that was a friends with benefits thing and he stepped back when I started seeing Ed. I came here after Hank lost Justin and I was still feeling sorry for myself after what had happened to Dodds. We ended up getting drunk and comforting each other. A part of me felt guilty because I was technically in a relationship with Ed but another part of me didn't. I did tell him and I expected him to be mad but he wasn't. When we broke up, he told me he wanted me to be happy and if that was with Hank, then he was fine with that. Hank and I got engaged after you left, which was just before I was promoted to Captain and got married on a cruise a year and a half ago. I had been in a car accident after I left Fin and Phoebe's party when they didn't get married and I ended up breaking my ankle. Hank was not able to attend with me but he was there taking care of us after I needed surgery just like I plan on being here for him now. He had decided when he was retiring about a year ago. He gave them a year's notice and wanted to prepare Jay to take over the unit."
"You've definitely been busy in the last year or so."
"Always. If it's not work, it's traveling back and forth to be with Hank or going to Noah's dance recitals. Have you been back to New York, since you left?"
"No and I probably should. I haven't visited my dad's or sister's graves since I left."
"I don't visit my mom's as often as I should either. If you decide to come to New York, give us a call and maybe we can all have dinner or something."
"I will do that. I don't think I ever thanked you."
"For what?"
"Proving me innocent when I was accused of rape."
"I never thought you were guilty."
"I appreciate it though. I should go. Say hi to Fin, Rollins and Carisi for me."
"I will. Take care of yourself, Peter."
"You too."
Peter kissed Olivia's cheek and then he left. Olivia then asked Trudy if she could stay with Nadia for a little while, so she and Noah could grab something to eat. She was more than happy to. Olivia and Noah went to get something to eat. She also called Fin again to get that file to CPD as soon as he could, since it was confirmed that Caroline was one of the victims they had worked with.
Some of the CPD higher ups including Sam were waiting around the hospital to find out what was going on with Hank, so they could do their news conference. The events of the day had been on the local news stations and one of the victims had been giving a news conference of his own. The hospital had it on all the TV's including in the ED.
"Get a load of this guy. He acts like he was the one that sprung into action and helped who he could. Unbelievable."
"Someone wants his 15 minutes of fame."
"Who's the one that was the real hero and is now in surgery for a broken leg? He's the one that basically saved that little girl when she lost her mother."
Then Sam came into the ED.
"You seeing this idiot?"
"Yeah. Unbelievable."
"Is CPD planning to give a news conference?"
"As soon as we know what's going on with Hank and when we find out something from Intelligence. We would like to have it here if that's ok."
"Of course. I think we had the majority of the victims. We finally settled down somewhat. What have they found out?"
"From what CFD said, they don't think it was structural. There were bomb fragments found as well. The person of interest has some kind of connection to a possible relative of little Nadia's and was recently paroled from prison in New York."
"So, this person is already in trouble for leaving the State of New York."
"Right. Olivia remembered Nadia's mother was a victim she worked with and Nadia said they left New York when she was 2."
Sam had gotten a text message from Olivia that Hank was out of surgery.
"Excuse me."
"Of course."
Sam when to find Olivia who was back in Nadia's room. She told her what she was planning to say at the news conference and Olivia was fine with that. She said she was having her Sergeant email their files on Caroline Samson's case to Jay, so they had the info on the guy they were looking for. Then Jay came in.
"What did you find?"
"Plenty. Can we talk out here?"
"Of course."
Jay, Olivia and Sam went back out into the hall.
"Apparently the grandfather, who was Caroline's father, had a trust fund set up for Nadia. Caroline had one as well. Jenna is Caroline's sister and was intentionally left out because she's a drug addict. My guess is, she's after her sister and niece's money, so she can spend it on her bad habit. The guy is her boyfriend."
"Did you get an email from Fin?"
"Yeah, I did. There's more. We found Caroline's will. She left guardianship of her daughter to you."
Jay showed Olivia the will, which was done recently.
"I never expected this but then this actually works in our favor."
"It does. The bomb fragments we located were somehow connected to Caroline's phone. They set it up to detonate when she checked her text messages. Someone who knows about explosives probably helped them. We are still trying to get a match on the other person in the store's video. They're being charged with 6 counts of murder and several counts of attempted murder. One of those charges would be the attempted murder of a police officer."
"Has the FBI been contacted?"
"Yes."
Then Erin came in with Olive and Daniel.
"Liv, how's Dad?"
"He's out of surgery and I actually need to go be with him. Jay, can you fill them in?"
"Yeah, sure."
"I can do a news conference?"
"With what we know, that's fine."
Olivia went to tell Noah that she was going to go be with Hank, while Jay filled Erin and Olive in. Sam went to fill the higher ups in on what Jay had told her and then she went to get ready for her news conference. Olivia got to where Hank was. She kissed his forehead, sat down and took his hand. She kissed his hand as she laced their fingers together. Then he started to wake up.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"You ok?"
"I'm supposed to be asking you that."
"A bit groggy."
"I've got a lot going through my mind."
Olivia told Hank what Jay had just told her, including that Caroline had left guardianship of Nadia to her.
"She did?"
"Yeah. I kind had this feeling you wanted to take her."
"I did cross my mind. I didn't know how to tell her that her mom was dead though. That's part of my job."
"I know. It's never easy when you deal with kids in certain situations sometimes. I still need to tell Noah about Ellie and Johnny D when I think he's old enough to understand. So, do you think we'll be adding to our family?"
"I don't see why not. If Caroline left guardianship to you and she obviously became attached to me, we might be the best option to help her through this."
"Noah said he'd be ok with it. The girls and Daniel got here just before I came to see you. Jay was filling them in on everything. Sam was about to hold a news conference. Noah and I were down in the cafeteria and the TV was on. Apparently one of the victims was being interviewed by the local news stations like he was the hero or something. Some young guy."
"I think he was helpin' but he didn't seem like he was too concerned about any of them. Some were more helpful than others."
"This guy probably just wants his 15 minutes of fame or something. I guess the reporters are trying to find out your identity but Sam assured me that she would respect our privacy. She knows you weren't in it for the fame and glory."
"I'm not. I was just doin' my job."
"I know. I love you."
"I love you too."
They started kissing and then Erin came in.
"Good grief! Get a room, you two!"
"You're so funny."
"I'm teasing. How are you feeling?"
"I'm still groggy."
"That is understandable. So, I met Nadia. Cute kid."
"Her mom named me as her guardian. That actually makes it easier for us to get her. I had this feeling that Hank wanted to take her because she had become so attached to him. I said we would take care of her medical bills. Sharon Goodwin said DCFS would have to be brought in."
"Do you want her?"
"We've actually been talking about wanting to add on to the family. Noah knows about this but until now, I haven't said anything about us talking about adopting again. He does want to be a big brother. He loves his big sister too."
"Aw! I love him too. Are you going to need me to stay with him?"
"Yeah. I need to be here. Fin already knows. I'll probably take Family Leave. I'm guessing he's done with work because he's retiring in a month and the doctor said he needs to rest for 6 weeks. I don't know if that means we have to stay here that whole time or if he can do his therapy in New York. It also depends on Nadia. I will probably call Trevor Langan and see if he knows of someone that can help us here. I hope we don't need to stay here until everything is finalized."
"Maybe we can find someone here and then Trevor can do what he can at our end."
"That might work too. I'll give him a call in the morning or after we talk to DCFS."
"Maybe DCFS can recommend someone."
"That's true too."
"I should be fine. I can make sure I'm home for the duration. If not, maybe Corey can help out"
"If something doesn't work out for you and you need to go or Corey can help if he's at work, let Rollins know."
"It shouldn't be a problem. Is Lucy going to be available?"
"I haven't talked to her yet. I'll need to call her in the morning. Someone will need to go home with him on Monday. If that's you, fine but if not, I need to let Lucy know that she needs to come get him."
"I'd like to stick around for a bit. Olive and Daniel are here until Monday as well."
"Until these people are caught, I don't want to leave Nadia alone. Trudy said she'll stick around as long as we need her even though Mouch works until tomorrow morning. I don't necessarily want to leave Hank alone either."
"Olive said she'll take the boys to the house."
"Ok. My rental is at 51. I rode to the scene with Chief Boden and then he brought Noah over later."
"My SUV is still at the CVS if it wasn't damaged."
"Did you or Olive get a car?"
"No. We met in Baggage Claim and then got a cab."
"Stay here with him for a few minutes. I'm going to go check on the kids."
"Ok."
Olivia kissed Hank and then she went to Nadia's room.
"How's Hank?"
"He's still groggy but he's able to carry on a conversation."
"That's good."
"How are you doing, Nadia?"
"I'm ok. What happens to me now?"
"The police found a paper that said your mom named me as your guardian if something happened to her."
"Will I be able to come live with you and Hank?"
"Hopefully."
"I'd like that."
"So would we."
Then some of the people from 51 came in.
"How's Voight?"
"He's good. He's out of surgery and still a little groggy but he's able to carry on a conversation."
"Good."
"Thank you for saving my papa."
"You're welcome, Daniel."
"He was so concerned the entire way to Chicago."
"It's what we do best but you know what? Your grandpa deserves a lot of the credit. He helped keep a lot of people safe after what happened. How are you doin', Nadia?"
"I'm kind of sad without my mommy."
"That's understandable."
"Intelligence found her mom's will and it named me as guardian. She was a victim we helped."
"Oh, wow!"
"What does Hank's SUV look like?"
"It is still fully intact. No damage at all."
"I need both Hank's SUV and my rental moved here. Hank's SUV more than my rental, so Olive can take the boys home."
"Someone can probably bring your rental over after shift."
"Ok. Thanks. Here are the keys."
"Ok. Olive do you want someone to take you to get Voight's SUV?"
"Yeah, sure."
"You can ride with us."
"Thanks."
"Ok."
"We'll come visit Hank after shift tomorrow."
"Ok."
Mouch kissed Trudy and then everyone left. Olive went with Sylvie and Violet to get Hank's SUV. Everyone had headed that way, since it was dark and they wanted to make sure the scene was secure.
"Oh, wow!"
"Yeah, that was something. There were half a dozen fatalities."
Sylvie pulled up next to Hank's SUV.
"Thank you so much."
"No problem."
Olive got out of the ambo and got into the SUV. Everyone stayed until she had gotten in and let her leave before they headed out as well. Before she headed back to Med, Mouch blew the horn on the truck, so she waved. She arrived back at Med at the same time the group from Intelligence did.
"Hey, Olive."
"Hey."
"We see you got Voight's SUV."
"I rode over to get it with Sylvie and Violet."
"How's Voight?"
"From what Olivia said, he's still a bit groggy but he's able to carry on a conversation with her. She, Trudy and the boys were in with Nadia and Erin was with Hank when I left."
They all headed in and went to Nadia's room. They handed Nadia her teddy bear and she was happy to have it with her. Olivia was gone and Erin was back. Hank had been moved, so Erin told them his room number. Olive went with, since he hadn't seen Hank yet.
"Hey."
"Hey, Olive."
Olive went to give Hank a hug.
"How you feelin', Boss?"
"Not too bad."
"How long are they plannin' to keep you?"
"They haven't really said but I need to rest for 6 weeks."
"I don't think you can do stairs, so you'll have to sleep on the sofa when you go home now. At least we decided on the condo and not the brownstone, so we have the parking garage and an elevator. You do still need to get into the house."
"Yep. I'm hopin' I don't have to stay in Chicago that entire time but that depends on if we can leave with Nadia."
"We're probably going to have to drive to New York though. Someone will have to go get stuff for Nadia."
"We packed a lot of her stuff already. We brought her teddy bear in and gave it to her."
"Ok, good."
"I can probably work on packing stuff if you want me to."
"I've gotten quite a bit done. I've done the attic, basement and part of the garage. I don't need the stuff for the lawn or snow removal any more. As far as clothes go, I'll probably keep sweatpants, shorts and sleep pants with T-shirts and sweatshirts. I'll probably be wearing more shorts than anything for a while."
"Yeah, probably. Is she already in Kindergarten?"
"I don't remember when her birthdate was."
Then Trudy came in.
"Hey."
"Hey, yourself."
"I'm gonna go for now, so I can get some sleep and I will come back in the morning."
"Ok. Thank you so much for staying with her."
"You're welcome. She's a great kid. Olive, the boys are both getting whiny."
"That figures. I should probably get them to bed."
"I should go say goodnight to them. I'll be back."
"I'll walk you out, Olive."
"Thanks."
Olive hugged Hank again and then she, Olivia and Trudy went back to Nadia's room. Nadia was already asleep, so Olivia kissed her forehead. She then kissed both boys and told them they could see Hank tomorrow. Erin had the TV on, so she was fine. Olive and Trudy left with the boys and Olivia went back to Hank's room after she grabbed Caroline's papers. She noticed that she had turned 5 recently, so she was probably in Preschool.
"Is everyone ok?"
"Yep. Nadia was already asleep and Erin was watching TV. I told the boys they could come see you tomorrow."
"That's fine."
"Have any arrests been made yet?"
"Nope."
Then the 6 people Olivia least expected to see at that hour came in.
"We'll, we're here."
"I see that. Why?"
"The idiot left New York, so once he's caught, we gotta take him back anyway, right?"
"Probably."
"Captain, I made the call. I took SVU out of commission for the weekend."
"And I volunteered to come with only because Fin needs a babysitter."
"Ha!"
"Thank you. I just wasn't expecting to see all of you."
"After I talked to you and sent that file to Halstead, I did a Face Time with Rollins, Kat, Velasco and Chief Garland. We basically all felt helpless. Chief was the one that made the call. We're all a family. How ya feelin', man?"
"A little groggy yet."
"Sonny and the girls send their love."
"Thanks."
Jay filled them all in on what was going on.
"Technically, we probably shouldn't be working on this case, so I did tell the FBI if they wanted to head it, that was completely up to them."
"Does Miller know that?"
"She does and she agreed."
Then Sam came in again.
"Sergeant Tutuola. Detective Rollins."
"Ma'am."
"I'm Chief Christian Garland, Captain Voight's boss."
"Nice to meet you, Chief. I'm Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller."
"I'm Detective Katriona Tamin with SVU."
"I'm Officer Joe Velasco with SVU."
"I'm Sergeant Phoebe Baker with Vice but I am also Sergeant Tutuola's fiancée."
"It's nice to meet all of you."
"Most of you haven't met Officer Dante Torres. He's the newest member of the squad."
"Nice to meet you, Torres."
"You too. The only one I've met is Captain Voight but I have heard about everyone."
"Uh oh! Is Liv talkin' about us?"
"It's all good."
"Do we think the persons of interest are even in this city?"
"At this point, we don't know. As I'm sure you already know, the FBI took over the lead on the case. They are looking for the sister and her boyfriend and we have yet to identify the person we think may have built the bomb. They were wearing a mask in the photo."
"All this is because her father intentionally left her out of getting a trust fund after his death?"
"That's what it sounds like. We have not had anyone come forward with any information yet."
"Has anyone thought to check out the guy that was on the news? Sometimes the ones that make themselves out to be the heroes really aren't."
Then Olivia's phone rang.
"Hey, Erin."
"I was just watching the news. Has anyone thought to look into the guy that did that newss conference? There's just something about him I don't trust."
"You sound like your dad. He just said the exact same thing. The FBI basically took over the case."
"I know who to call, so I'll make the call."
"Ok."
Olivia hung up.
"Erin said the same thing you did. Chip off the old block. She's making the call. Just by watching the news, she said there was something about that guy she didn't trust."
Hank had a huge smirk on his face. Kevin was doing a little searching of his own.
"Check this out."
He showed Sam what he had found.
"I'd say this guy is worth checking into as the person who may have made the bomb."
"Good call, Boss!"
"Thanks."
"We should probably let Hank get some rest."
Everyone except Olivia headed out and then the nurse came in to check Hank's pain medication and take his vitals, while Olivia was texting Erin. After the nurse left, Olivia kissed Hank and they both fell asleep.
Both squads had gone to the District. They all knew if they had decided to call it a night, they would be needed for the case. The FBI had gotten what they needed to search the guy's home. However, by the time they got there, he was nowhere to be seen and everything was gone. They kept CPD informed as to what was going on as well.
"That was a dead end."
"What?"
"The guy from the news conference was nowhere to be seen and everything was gone. The FBI said we could go home for the night and if they need us, they'll let us know."
"This is such bullshit."
"That's for sure."
"He acted like he was the one that was the hero but in reality, he was the one that almost cost us our Sergeant. I would have done the same thing Voight did."
"I think we all would have. I know he and I haven't always seen eye to eye with a lot over the years but it definitely won't be the same without him."
"That's for sure but he's gotta do what's best for him and that's bein' with Olivia and Noah full-time. What happened to Olinsky took a lot out of him."
"It did all of us."
"True."
They all ended up going home or to the hotel, so they could get some sleep.
By the next morning, Hank hadn't gotten much sleep, since they kept checking his vitals. Olivia looked very uncomfortable in the chair but she was still out like a light and he could hear her snoring. One of the times the nurse had come in, she put a blanket on Olivia. Erin and Nadia were already awake, so the nurse in Pediatrics thought it would be ok for Erin to take her to see Hank. Fin, Phoebe, Amanda, Jay and Hailey arrived at the hospital. They all came into Hank's room together.
"Morning."
"Hey."
"How do you feel this morning?"
"I feel ok but I didn't sleep a whole lot. They kept wakin' me up."
"Is she alive?"
"I keep hearing snores, so yeah."
Then Olivia started waking up.
"I don't snore."
"Yeah, you do."
"Here, Liv."
"Thank you, Amanda."
Olivia took the cup of coffee from Amanda and took a sip.
"Just the way I like it."
"Rollins made me stop to get coffee on the way here."
"Yeah and?"
"Just sayin'."
Olivia, Phoebe and Amanda all rolled their eyes.
"I need to pee before I put more liquid into me."
"Thanks for sharin' that, Liv."
"You're welcome."
Olivia went to the bathroom and then she came back.
"So, what's new? Anything?"
"They found the guy that they suspected made the bomb but he was dead. We're thinking it had something to do with the other two."
"In Chicago?"
"Yep, so the FBI does believe they are still here."
Then Will came in.
"How are you doing, Hank?"
"I'm ok but didn't sleep a whole lot. They kept wakin' me up."
"It gets better. Jay, can I talk to you for a second?"
"Sure."
Will and Jay went out into the hall.
"There is a rape vic that was brought in that looks like one of the suspects."
"We can investigate the rape but if it is her, we can't make the arrest. Hailey and I will handle it, since we're here but we will need to contact the FBI. We'll meet you down there."
"Thanks."
"Yep."
Will went back down to the ED, while Jay went back into Hank's room.
"There is a rape vic in the ED that Will said looks like one of the suspects."
Then someone from the FBI came in.
"Sergeant Voight, I'm Special Agent Dylan Michaels from the FBI."
"Nice to meet you. This is my wife Captain Olivia Voight with the NYPD Special Victims Unit."
"Captain Voight, it's nice to meet you."
"You too."
"Special Agent Lindsay."
"Special Agent Michaels."
"I have also met Sergeants Tutuola and Baker and Detective Rollins. I assume Detective Halstead has filled you in on the latest."
"Yeah."
"I just heard from my brother, who is a doctor here in the ED, that there was a rape victim brought in, who looks like one of the suspects."
"Lead the way, Detective."
Jay, Hailey and Special Agent Michaels went down to the ED. It turned out that Jenna was the rape victim and she was refusing treatment. She ended up being cuffed to the bed, so once she was released, she would be taken into custody. They tried getting out of her where her boyfriend was but she was refusing to talk. Jenna said the only way she would talk would be if she was given the money she was entitled to and all the charges against her were dropped. They told her they were not going to be dropping the charges any time soon, since she was partially responsible for the deaths of 6 people and several counts of attempted murder, including a police officer. They all knew she was high because of the way she was acting and they were waiting for the drug screen to come back, so they knew exactly what she was taking. Special Agent Michaels let the team know that Jenna was now in custody.
Jay and Hailey had gone back up to Hank's room. DCFS was there talking to Hank and Olivia, so everyone else was in the hallway. Nadia and Noah were in with them.
"Is that DCFS?"
"Yep. Liv at least has the paperwork saying that mother named her as Nadia's guardian. Is Jenna in custody?"
"She is. She refused treatment and she's refusing to talk. She said the only way she'd talk is if she was given the money she thinks she's entitled to and all the charges against her are dropped. The charges against her won't be dropped any time soon. She was partially responsible for the deaths of 6 people and several counts of attempted murder, including a police officer. Obviously Voight wasn't the intended target but regardless, he was there and injured. It could have been worse."
"Exactly and other than the 6 deaths, the attempted murder of a police officer itself is a pretty long sentence."
"Exactly. They're waiting on the drug screen. It was quite obvious she was high."
"All she wants the money for is more drugs. I used to see this with Bunny all the time. I was so happy when she packed up and went back to Vegas. I told her that I wasn't going to help her anymore. Of course she blamed Hank for that. I'm glad he and I finally had the DNA test done. I called her after we found out that he was my father and read her the riot act for lying to me yet again. Liv has been more of a mother to me than Bunny ever was. I know this last year and a half has been hard for them being in a long-distance marriage but I'm glad he's finally leaving Chicago to be with us full-time. I know it wasn't an easy decision for him to make."
"It wouldn't be for any of us really."
"Even with me, it wasn't easy. I'm just glad I had Liv, Noah and her squad, so I wasn't completely on my own in New York."
"If anyone gets that, I do. I left Atlanta and came to New York and I didn't know anyone. Me and Liv haven't always had the best relationship but I think that changed when I became a mom. We both agree that we want to be better mothers to our kids than our mothers were to us. I'm finally startin' to have a better relationship with my mom."
"A lot of that was your sister though."
"Yeah, it was."
"I didn't have the best relationship with my son either while he was growin' up but we've worked things out and I do get to be a part of my grandson's life, which I glad for."
"I know how Hank's relationship was with Justin especially after Camille died. He doesn't want to make those same mistakes with Noah and he's grateful that he sees Daniel as much as he does."
"I miss my dad sometimes. He was a stubborn son of a bitch though. I'm glad we finally talked though."
"I am too. I didn't want you to blame Hank for me taking the job in New York. The change was good for me. If we hadn't left things the way they were, you wouldn't be with Upton right now. I'm happy you moved on."
"I hope you find someone too."
"I've been seeing someone. He works in the ED at one of the local hospitals. He understands my job and that I'm gone a lot. I told him what happened now and he said to let him know if they need anything. He knows the situation with Dad and Liv. I told him that I would probably be staying at their place, since I need to take care of Noah and he said he'll check on us."
"How long have you been with him?"
"We actually started seeing each other after Liv had her surgery. Corey was the doctor that took care of her in the ED when she was first in the accident and we met again when we were there when she had her surgery. He asked for my number and I honestly didn't think he'd call me but he did.
"Does Hank like him?"
"Oh yeah. Even Olive has someone too."
"Oh, wow!"
"He's also a doctor. He's one of the Pediatricians that Daniel has gone too but since they started seeing each other, he hasn't seen Daniel. Daniel really likes Brett."
"How long have they been seeing each other?"
"Around the same time that Corey and I started seeing each other. Dad likes him too."
Then Olive came in with the boys and Corey was with them.
"Babe, what are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to make sure things were ok. After we talked last night, I made arrangements to fly out here. I wanted it to be a surprise."
"That was so sweet of you but what about your next shifts?"
"I called and someone else to cover for me. I took a few days of vacation and came help with whatever your parents or Noah need."
"Liv wants me to take him home but if I have to go out of town and can't do it, would you be able to help?"
"It shouldn't be a problem. I can make sure I get scheduled around his schedule. How long would this be for?"
"I'm not sure. I called my boss and told him that I was planning to take some personal time, maybe a couple weeks, because of what happened to my dad. Liv is probably going to stay until he can leave for New York and then I'm sure I can work my schedule around him. If you get into a bind, Liv said to contact Rollins."
"I'm good with that."
"Me too."
"I'm guessing Lucy can get him from school and take him to dance class. I think Liv was to call her."
"I can stay at their place or he can stay at ours."
"Thanks."
"No problem. Your family is my family too."
Erin kissed Corey and then Kelly, Stella, Trudy and Mouch came in.
"Hey. We brought Olivia's rental from the firehouse."
"Great."
"How's Hank this morning?"
"Fine but he didn't sleep much. He said they kept waking him up."
"That's typical."
"This must be Corey."
"Yeah, it is. Corey, this is Trudy Platt, one of my dad's closest and oldest friends and the Desk Sergeant at the 21st District."
"I don't know about oldest. It's nice to meet you, Corey."
"You too."
"This is my husband, Randall McHolland."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too."
"You must be Jay and you must be Kelly."
"Yep."
"You got it."
"Erin has told me about both of you."
"Uh oh!"
"Yeah, really."
"It's all good."
"This is my wife, Hailey Upton."
"And this is my wife, Stella Kidd."
"It's nice to meet you both. I'm Corey Cooper."
"You too."
"Nice to meet ya, Corey."
"Have you eaten yet?"
"No, actually, I haven't."
"Neither have we. The boys are hungry and we were up early to go pick Corey up at the airport."
"I promised them breakfast after they picked me up."
"I need to grab a shower yet though. Liv probably needs to get out of here for a while too."
"I can stay with Hank or Nadia while you two go for a while."
"Us too."
"Ok."
"What's going on in there anyway?"
"That's the person from DCFS. They've been in there for quite a while."
"Hopefully that's a good sign."
"I hope so. She's only in Preschool because she just turned 5 but she seems like she's very smart for her age. She reads a little bit. I was reading to her and she wanted to read with me."
"We talked with some of the neighbors when we went to their apartment and it sounds like Caroline was a teacher, so that could be why. We did find a person's name at the school she was at and plan on contacting them later this morning, so they'll be aware of the situation."
"That makes sense."
The person from DCFS came out of Hank's room with Olivia and Noah.
"Thank you for your time and good luck."
"Thank you."
Then the person from DCFS left.
"Hey, Corey."
"Hey."
"Corey said he could work out something to stay with Noah."
"Great! I do still need to call Lucy though."
"Corey is awesome!"
"Thanks, kiddo. Olivia, can I talk to you and Hank about something?"
"Of course. Can someone take Nadia back to her room?"
"Sure."
"I'll do it."
Trudy took Nadia back down to her room. Mouch went with her and then headed home to get some sleep. Corey went into Hank's room with Olivia and sat down after he shut the door.
"I'd like your permission to ask Erin to marry me."
Corey pulled the ring out of his pocket and showed it to Hank and Olivia.
"Oh, my! That is gorgeous!"
"Of course you have my permission. I haven't seen her this happy in a long time."
"I know she's gone a lot but she has mentioned that she'd like to have to have a baby."
"That has been the one thing she has wanted more than anything. I hope she says yes."
"I would like to do it while we're here. Any recommendations?"
"Hank proposed to me on a carriage ride around the city. He took me out for a romantic dinner and then on the carriage ride. After that, we spent the night at one of the hotels. The entire night was so romantic."
"That sounds perfect."
"Erin loves pizza, so you can't go wrong with that. Let me give you the name and number of the carriage company. I know the guy."
Hank wrote down the name and number of the carriage company
"Ok. Thank you so much. I promised breakfast to Olive and the boys if they picked me up from the airport. Olivia, would you like to join us?"
"Maybe I should. I need to grab a shower first though."
"Erin said the same thing."
"Go. I'll be fine."
"By the way, Erin said Corey could help with Noah."
"Oh, good. Thanks."
"No problem. I told her that her family is also my family. I'm sure my parents would be more than willing to help out too if they were needed. They really liked Noah when they met him."
"Thank you so much. Ok, we're heading out. I love you."
"I love you too."
Olivia kissed Hank and she left with Corey, Erin, Olive and the boys. They went over to Hank's, so Erin and Olivia could take showers and get changed. After they were done, they went out for breakfast. Fin, Phoebe and Amanda stayed with Hank, while Jay and Hailey went to the District and Kelly and Stella went home. Nadia had her breakfast brought into her and Hank had something to eat as well.
"I'm glad you came to help."
"We all kinda felt helpless after I talked to Liv and I sent that file to Halstead. We're all here, includin' Chief Garland, Kat and Velasco. You keepin' Nadia?"
"Yeah. Once Olivia showed them the will naming her as the guardian, they were fine with it. They also know about the aunt, who's on her way to prison. I'm not sure how long until I can travel but we won't have to stay here any longer. Once we decide we're ready to adopt her, Trevor will do the paperwork. Olivia was right. I would have taken her anyway."
"At least she's not alone."
"That's always a good thing. Lately, kids seem to take to me right away. Nadia did. Noah did."
"My girls did too. They said to give Uncle Hank a hug from them and they hope you feel better soon."
Amanda gave Hank a hug.
"Thanks. I appreciate that."
Amanda's phone rang for a video chat, so she talked to Sonny and the girls. The girls got to talk to Hank too and then Amanda talked to Sonny again. She ended the call by telling him she loved him and she would talk to him later.
"Amanda, you and Sonny are so cute together."
"Thanks. When I finally told Liv, she said she wasn't surprised. Sonny is so amazin' with the girls."
"Do they see their dads at all?"
"Jesse spends time with her dad now that he's back in New York but Billie's dad didn't want to be bothered. Declan is fine with Sonny being a big part of her life. A part of me thinks Sonny is tryin' to get enough nerve to propose and I really hope he does. I'll be right back."
Amanda left and headed to the washroom and then she came back. Not too much later, Olivia and the boys came back.
"Are you missing a few people?"
"Erin and Corey wanted to spend some time together and Brett showed up, so he and Olive wanted to spend some time together too."
"Like I told you, the other night, he wants to propose to Olive."
Daniel nodded his head.
"I helped Brett pick out Mommy's ring. She doesn't think I know but she throws up when she gets up in the morning."
"She definitely did this morning. We both heard it."
"Well, Olive is probably pregnant."
"No doubt."
"Mommy is pregnant? No way!"
"She probably doesn't want anyone to know yet."
"When Mommy and Brett get married, is he gonna to be my daddy?"
"Probably. I know he wants that because he has talked to me about it."
"Why?"
"Why did he talk to me about it?"
"Yeah."
"Because your real dad was my son and he wants to be sure I'm ok with him being your dad."
"You'll always be my papa, right?"
"Yeah, I will. I told Brett that all I care about is still havin' a relationship with you and that the person your mom chooses to be with is good to both of you."
"He doesn't hurt us. My friend Lacey can't see her mommy anymore because her boyfriend was hurting her. Why do grownups hurt kids?"
"I don't get it either."
Olivia tried explaining things to the boys in a way she thought they would understand. She also talked them about bullying, which could come from kids at school. She let them ask whatever questions they had and she or any of the other adults in the room would answer them. The boys both had to go to the bathroom, so they left the room.
"You handled that one pretty well."
"I just wanted them to be aware of what could happen."
"Jesse is the same age as Daniel but I'm not sure she's ready for it but I'm probably gonna have to have this talk with my girls at some point. Maybe I'll wait until she asks questions."
"We've been talking about wanting to have this talk with Noah just to make him aware of what could happen. I just hope I didn't overstep my boundaries with Olive though."
"He asked and it's probably better that it came from you because this is what you deal with every day."
"I know. I talked to Lucy and she said she'll help out in any way she can. I said it sounded like Corey was planning to stay with him but he would probably need her after school and to take him to dance class. He knew to let her know if his hours changed at all or if she had a conflict, to contact Amanda. She was fine with that. She said she hopes you're feeling better soon."
"Ok. I'm glad we don't have to worry about Noah."
"I am too."
The boys came back and then Olivia took them with her go check on Nadia. Nadia and Trudy were playing Go Fish. Olivia stayed for a little while but the boys wanted to stay, so then she went back to Hank's room.
"Nadia and Trudy were playing Go Fish and Nadia was winning. The boys wanted to stay."
"Ok."
Then Olive and Brett came in.
"Hey, you two."
"Hey."
"How are you feeling, Hank?"
"I'm doin' better. Thanks."
"No problem."
Olive introduced him to Fin, Phoebe and Amanda.
"Daniel was telling us about his friend that had to go live with her dad. He asked why people hurt kids, so I explained things to him. I apologize if I overstepped my boundaries."
"You didn't. He's been wondering about that ever since he found out about Lacey, which has just been since after school started. I kept putting it off because it's such a difficult subject. I appreciate you telling him."
"He asked whatever questions he had and he seems ok with what I told him."
"Good. We have news. Where is Daniel?"
"He and Noah are with Nadia and Trudy."
"Then we'll tell him later. Brett and I are engaged as of this morning and we are also having a baby."
"Congratulations!"
"Thank you."
"Your son told us that you don't know that he knows but he said you've been throwing up in the morning. Both boys heard it this morning."
"He's a smarty pants. You knew about this, didn't you, Hank?"
"Yeah, I did. Daniel asked if Brett was gonna be his dad and I told him he wanted to. I told him we talked and he asked why. I told him that he wanted to ask me if it was ok to be his dad. I told him that I just want a relationship with him and wanted to be sure that the person you were with was good to you. Daniel told me that you didn't hurt them and then he told us about his friend."
"I would never hurt anyone. I love kids, which is why I became a Pediatrician. My dad died when I was a year old, so obviously I don't remember him, much like Daniel. 5 years later, my mom started seeing this guy and at first, he seemed nice but he drank a lot. That's when he started to become abusive. He raped both my mom and my older sister and I had to witness that. My sister was 10 at the time and I was the same age as Daniel. He would take his cigarettes and burn me with them. He did the same thing to my mom and sister. A lot of my scars, I've had covered up with tattoos. The same with my sister. We overcame what happened to us as a family with a lot of therapy. One of the cops that responded is now our dad and he is the best guy ever. He adopted us when they got married and when Paige had her first baby, she named him after Grandpa Bob. My nephew's name name is Robert Michael. Our real dad's name was Michael and my brother-in-law is also Michael."
"Where are you from originally?"
"Houston. I went to college and Med School in Texas and got my Residency in Arizona. Paige lives here in Chicago, where she is a Rape Counsellor. Her husband is a firefighter and has been really supportive of her. My two younger sisters, Brianna and Hayley are in college but I'm not sure what they want to get into."
"Have you met his family?"
"Yes, we have. His parents adore Daniel."
"My mom sees my relationship with Daniel a lot like Bob's relationship with me but she said I'm a lot like my real dad."
"In some ways, Daniel is a lot like Justin but I just hope he doesn't get into trouble the way he did. He seems like he is very aware of what's right and wrong. Noah too."
"He knows when something isn't right, like with his friend at school. Lacey's family lives near us and she's one of his best friends. He is so sweet with her. I keep teasing him that she's his girlfriend. He does not like that at all.
"Do you like Arizona?"
"It's nice but it way too hot for me in the summer. Texas isn't much better and I've lived there most of my life. We've had some snow and ice in Texas but nothing like y'all get here. I've been looking for a job somewhere else. One of the doctors I worked with when I was in Med School and did my Peds rotation is now in New York and asked if I would be interested in taking a job there. I'm heading to New York from here to go talk to him just as a formality."
"Olive, are you ok with this?"
"Yeah. We'll be closer to all of you, so that's a plus. We had talked about this before Daniel and I came here, so obviously before we got engaged. We found out about the baby a few weeks ago. We obviously know we need to be in the same city by the time the baby comes and I'm at 15 weeks right now. If I wasn't pregnant, Daniel and I would stay in Arizona until after he gets out of school for the year. I don't necessarily want to move him now though. We do want to be married by the time the baby comes."
"If you need to look for places to live, there are condos available in our building. Then the boys would be in the same school."
"Honestly, that would be perfect. If Brett moves to New York sooner, we'd probably wait until Daniel gets out of school for Christmas and transfer him then."
"He might be ok with it if we end up living near Hank, Olivia and Noah."
"What are you planning to do about work?"
"I'm sure I can get something out there but I may just not worry about it until after the baby or even by the time Daniel starts school after summer."
"That's a good point."
"We may want to think about getting married more sooner than later since I may not get time off for a while and you won't be traveling much after the Holidays anyway."
"Yeah, that's true. It would probably have to be here or New York if I want Hank and Olivia there because Hank won't be doing much traveling."
"As it is, we'll probably end up driving to New York."
"Maybe we could see if we can get Erin and Corey there and have Hank, Olivia and Noah on Face Time. I'll have to see about my family too."
"We're fine if you don't include us. Maybe we can have a party for you once you're settled in New York."
"That would be great. We could get a mixed reaction from Daniel about the move because he has to leave his friends but he'll be happy to be closer to his grandparents."
Olive's phone rang, so she took it. After she was done talking, she hung up.
"That was Todd, Lacey's dad. He said Kristen has a job offer in New York, so they'll be moving too. She's leaving this weekend and they're going out there after Lacey is out of school for Christmas. I said we were too. You were going out for an interview just as a formality. He said he'd hold off until after the first of the year."
"So, Todd is in charge of the girls in the meantime."
"Yep."
"Does she get along with her stepdaughter?"
"Lacey is closer to her than she is her own mother. Kristen is a lawyer and she deals with kids and she was the one that convinced Lacey's mother to give up her rights. Her mom is into drugs and basically allowed her boyfriend to do what he did to her. They got married 4 years ago and have a 3 year and a 1 year. Todd blames himself for what happened to Lacey."
"Unfortunately, some kids end up with deadbeat parents. I wonder if she got a job at Trevor's law firm because that's what he does. When I talked to him earlier, he did say he was getting a new partner because the one he had was retiring."
They kept talking and then Nadia's doctor came in to tell them that she was being released and said the nurse was already working on the discharge papers. Olive and Brett went to get Daniel and then they told him their news, which he was really excited about. Olive then wanted to show Brett around Chicago and he had called his sister to make arrangements to meet for dinner. Erin and Corey came back and Hank and Olivia told them what was going on. Olivia went to help Nadia get ready to go, while Trudy went to see Hank. Christian, Kat and Joe showed up to see Hank as well.
They had found the body of Jenna's boyfriend, so she was the only one that would be seeing jail time for what had happened. Sam came to see Hank and told him that herself. Once Nadia's paperwork was done, Olivia took Nadia and Noah to Hank's, so she could get settled in. Christian, Olivia's squad and Phoebe went back to the hotel.
Later that day, Corey had taken Erin out for pizza and then on the carriage ride. He ended up proposing and she said yes. They told Hank and Olivia the next day.
By Monday, everyone from out of town left for Phoenix or New York. Corey left with Noah. He and Olive both said they would Face Time with them and if any of them needed anything, to let them know.
By early the following week, Hank was released from the hospital but he was pretty much confined to the living room for the time being, since he couldn't do stairs. Olivia ended up bring him stuff to go through, so he could pack. Nadia seemed to be adjusting well to living with them.
