Chapter 17

First Fight

It was a month after Evelyn's birthday and word spread that another mission to stop conflict was coming and Evelyn was getting annoyed with all these missions. Evelyn knew there was no stopping them. But this one was rumored to be longer then 2 weeks.

Reiner was pulled into an emergency meeting the day before they were to leave. He wasn't to thrilled with this new mission. They were warned the conflicts would pull them longer away. No one seemed happy except maybe Zeke. Reiner sat at the head of the table as Magath sat down. Evelyn had been called to the hospital for a meeting with Anita, but was going to take the kids out for lunch and Reiner promised to meet with them as soon as the meeting was over.

"I know we have plans with family after this and you want to see them before we leave. I got some bad news." Magath said.

"What is it?" Galliard asked.

"We are not releasing this to the public right now less somehow it gets out. Other countries have developed weapons that can now pierce the armor of the Armored Titan." Magath said. Reiner felt his face pale. "We don't know yet if its gonna be used in the conflict we're getting into, but our sources have confirmed." Magath didn't look thrilled on the matter. Reiner pinched the bridge of his nose. Just what they need and Evelyn will have a fit if she found out.

"That isn't good." Pieck said.

"It's not. It could easily kill Reiner." Zeke said, frowning. "Its bad enough the Island Devils had the Thunder Spears to pierce through his armor." Galliard said.

"Don't remind me. I still get nightmares." Reiner said.

"We don't know when it will be brought into conflicts, but we need to be careful." Magath said.

"And also make sure it doesn't get in the public eye." Zeke said.

Evelyn entered Anita's office. Anita was looking over some paperwork.

"You called for me, Anita?" Evelyn asked, shutting the door.

"Yes. I know your switching to nights with Reiner being gone for awhile. I want you as Head Nurse on Night shift and when you get back to mornings you'll be head nurse on my days off." Anita said.

"But what if I go back home? I don't want to say yes and leave you guys." Evelyn said.

"We will make it work. It might be awhile, but we will. So what do you say?" Anita said with a smile on her face.

"I'll take it. Thank you for giving me a chance when I first came here and becoming a friend." Evelyn said.

"Of course. You came well skilled." Anita said.

"I should get going. I promised Gabi, Zofia, Udo, and Falco lunch with Reiner before he leaves." Evelyn said, heading for the door.

"Have fun." Anita said. The kids were waiting outside with Reiner.

"The meeting is over?" Evelyn asked.

"It was just plans for our leave." Reiner said as they walked.

"Why can't we come and see you all in action?" Gabi demanded.

"It would be cool just to see." Udo said.

"You four are still young. Probably when your a little older." Reiner said. The kids grumble.

"So why did you have a meeting, Miss Jaeger?" Falco asked.

"Well I'm switching to night shift till Reiner gets back and I got made Head Nurse at night and when I switch back to days I'm head nurse on Anita's days off." Evelyn said with a smile. The kids cheered and Reiner pulled her against his side and pressed a kiss to her head.

"I'm proud of you." Reiner said. Evelyn smiled. The kids ran ahead. "Just keep busy and the time will go fast."

"I plan to. The kids will be keeping me Company. Don't worry about me." Evelyn said, hugging him.

It was a wonderful lunch with the kids. The kids acted like kids for the first time in a long time which made Evelyn and Reiner happy. The couple along with Galliard and Pieck treated them like kids when they weren't working. Reiner and Evelyn dropped the kids off at their houses. Evelyn grabbed a newspaper on their way home. She liked to keep on what's going on around Marley and other countries.

Reiner went upstairs to get packed as Evelyn made some coffee. She spread out the paper on the table after she poured a cup of coffee. Evelyn nearly dropped her coffee. The Title of the newspaper read: New Weapons that could Pierce the Armored Titan. Evelyn felt her face pale at the words.

"Eve?" Reiner's voice makes her jump. She didn't even hear him come down the stairs. Evelyn turned to look at Reiner as he came in. He noticed the scared and worried look on her face. "What's wrong?" Evelyn grabbed the paper and shoved it into his hand.

"So when were you going to tell me on this?" Evelyn asked. Reiner looked at the paper and his eyes widen. Evelyn stood with her arms crossed. "So you were going to keep this from me or were you going to tell me?" Reiner pinched the bridge of his nose. He could tell she was pissed.

"It was rumors at the moment and our sources didn't know if they were going to be used during our next mission. Don't get mad at me." Reiner growled seeing the anger flare in her eyes. "You don't think I'm worried about this."

"Reiner. These could kill you if they penatrate the Armored." Evelyn said.

"Its already bad enough your old friends have the Thunder Spears. You think these are better?" Reiner asked. She glared at him.

"We did what we had to with plans to capture and remember to me you were the enemy. Your now my boyfriend. So I don't know if you will come back alive or not with this." Evelyn said. Reiner felt anger boiling. "And I am scared for what will happen to me if anything happened to you."

"Well if I die, you'll probably be thrown in jail or turned into a Titan. Your just an island devil nothing more. Your a tool." Reiner snapped. Smack. Reiner turned his head as Evelyn smacked him. A gasp comes and Evelyn sees Pieck standing there.

"I knew I was always a Island Devil, but you always treated me better then others. Guess I was wrong. I'm nothing to you." Evelyn said, turning her back to Reiner. Pieck saw the tears in her eyes. "What is it Pieck?"

"I was coming to see if you wanted to do dinner at our house." Pieck said.

"I'll come but mind if I spend the night?" Evelyn asked. Pieck glared at Reiner, who was trying to calm down.

"Of course." Pieck said.

"Eve." Reiner called, but she was heading out the door and slammed the door shut behind her. Reiner facepalmed. He knew he screwed up fighting with Evelyn the night before he was suppose to leave.
