(The next night)

Clara was shaken awake by Minho just as the window behind them exploded and a flurry of Griever's arms burst through the wall. Everyone in the area escaped out of the back door, but the Grievers were chasing people around the Glade. It seemed like that night it would take longer to find their victim than usual.

Once Clara was outside, she lost Minho in the chaos. People were shoving past her in an attempt to flee as far from the Homestead as possible. One boy collided with her, knocking her to the ground straight on the side of her face. Her lip throbbed and she could feel it begin to bleed. She heard a screech near her and she turned around to see a Griever had spotted her in her dazed state. Clara hoisted herself off the ground and tried to run, the Griever thundering behind her. It was close enough to her that the tips of its claws nipped at her shirt, trying to pull her towards them. Her side began to burn with the sudden intense movement as Clara ran as fast as her legs could carry her. A sharp pain shot through the wound, taking Clara by surprise to the point where she gasped for breath and faltered. She didn't think she could keep running for long. She tried to veer in different directions, but the Griever still caught up to her. With each passing second, the creature's arms continued to grow closer, its sharp objects scraping her skin. She could feel the Griever slow for a second as if to rear up for a finishing blow, and Clara sensed it was probably the end for her.

Then out of nowhere, as the Griever was about to strike, Clara was shoved to the ground. She tumbled onto the dirt, hard, and gasped for breath as the wind was knocked out of her. She heard a wet thunk and a strangled cry and whipped her head around to find the Griever had stopped and was holding someone up with its arm. Clara was horrified to realize that the Griever had plunged a large spike through the person's body.

She was further horrified to find out that it was Zart's body.

Her friend lifted his head to look at her with terrified blue eyes as blood began to drip from his mouth.
