TW: Loss of newborn
Calleigh stayed quiet the entire ride, Diego was on the phone the entire ride speaking about a new condo going up in South Miami. She couldn't comprehend what was going on, one moment she was jogging and figuring out what she would eat for dinner and now she's sitting in a Jacuzzi in Key West, kidnapped by a mob family.
The hou-mansion was beautiful she had to admit, even through her haze she could see the Cuban inspired terra cotta colored roof and off white mansion. There was a lot of space and the marble inside let everyone know just how much money the Navarro's had. Diego led her to their room and she remembers gasping. Esteban had a loft style room, the bed and bathroom were upstairs, there was a balcony that had stairs leading to another one from the bedroom. It overlooked the private beach and Atlantic ocean.
The walk in closet scared her, it was like a dressing room… but she had her own side and that's the scary part. "We've been planning for a while. Your clothes are all here, lunch is in an hour and a half." She skimmed the high quality fabric and swooned over the shoes but it wasn't enough to unsettle her.
He got all her sizes right, even down to the underwear. She has questions that need to be answered as soon as possible. It's possible, no probable that Esteban snooped around her house. She hasn't noticed anything out of place or missing. And there hasn't been any disturbances around the house. Not that she knows of, but if the Navarros could easily hide their crime, there;s no telling how proficient Esteban is when it comes to snooping.
Sitting back in the tub, she tries to relax. It was hard seeing as her vanilla scent was carefully picked out. Looking at the soaps again, she spots Esteban's. Taking a whiff she catches a familiar scent. It was warm, topical… and she felt her body tingle in arousal. She's been having dreams around this scent. And suddenly it all came crashing down. He probably has been sneaking in while she was asleep and… got to know her a little more intimately as she slept. But why was it fuzzy and dreamlike? Had he been drugging her? There certainly were mornings where she felt that familiar ache and the lingering scent.
She felt herself go numb completely. The sense of violation alone was enough to make her breakdown, and breakdown she did. Her sobs of pain echoed in the large bathroom as the realization dawned on her. She felt her heart break for any doubt she had towards Horatio and she wept for the victims of Esteban.
The responsibility fell heavy on her at this point. She could continue to cry and feel pity for herself or she could do something to prevent as many deaths as she could. This went far beyond her and Esteban, with the amount of mob families and even MDPD being involved, a slip up from her could result in way too many bad things for everyone involved. And the last thing she wanted was a death on her hands because she couldn't be strong enough.
Getting out of the tub, she checked the time to see she had only 10 minutes left to herself before having to go downstairs. A knock at the door distracts her from her thoughts. Without waiting for her to answer, a Latina with big brown hair walks in. "Hola Bebe, I came in earlier but you were having a moment in the bathroom." Calleigh takes in the woman's luscious looks, no way she's in her 60s/70s.
"You're Vina Navarro? Diego was telling me about you in the car." Calleigh starts and the older woman looks annoyed before nodding her head.
"Abuela y Papi for you mi amor. But yes, I most certainly am. Like I said, I came in earlier to introduce myself and overheard your crying. Tell me bebe, what's wrong? Diego had a similar reaction to finding out about his marriage to mi hija, but you were in despair."
Calleigh sat on the edge of the bed, cheeks burning at being caught. "I- I smelled Esteban;s soap and realized he…" she didn't want to say it out loud and make it real.
VIna came to sit by her, hands running a hand through her hair and tucking a strand behind her hair. "Don't worry, he'll take great care of you. He might've taken some liberties but he means well by it. He hasn't harmed you or anything? He said he never did anything damaging. Because you can come to me if he does anything you don't like and are too afraid to speak out to him,"
Calleigh looked at the older woman indifferently. Of course they wouldn't see molestation as damaging. "No, he hasn't. You and Diego b…"
"Papi" Vina corrects.
"You and Papi both have told me this now. Apparently Esteban hasn't done anything like this before? Not one woman?" Vina shakes her head regretfully.
"He's so entrenched in his 'playtime' that he hasn't even thought about dating. He's perfected his craft and is well sought after at least. But the Navarro legacy has to carry on and I'm glad to see him get serious. I would've thought he might've been more attracted to Boa Vista but it seems you give him a drive. We've researched your team to try and push him towards her, but even I was impressed. Your kidnapping was handled quite well. You solved your own case. And if Esteban truly loved anything, besides his family of course, it would be a challenge. Boa Vista isn't as strong as you we've seen"
Calleigh felt herself getting more nauseous. So they were going to grab Natalia instead? I- I'm not sure she's off the list either. This is getting even worse. She'll make sure to keep that from happening.
"Everything about this is too much." she replies, Vina began chuckling to herself mostly.
"Don't worry, as long as you behave, you'll be fine. And don't think about running. We have security, doubled because you're so ingenious. Now come on, we have lunch, you must be starving."
Meanwhile back in Miami Horatio gets a phone call from Rayaz.
"Caine, I know I said I will leave you alone but I have some news."
Horatio grimaced at the apologetic sound of the crooked man. "How can I help you Chief?"
"Oh it's nothing too bad, but the FBI has asked to borrow Duquesne for a high profile case." Horatio wasn't surprised, he's gotten countless letters requesting her help. He knows she's loyal but still. She loves to work. "How long?"
"10 weeks at most they said. She's working with a lot of bullets and guns. It'll be a big hit for us but they are lending us a ballistic expert of their own, on their dime of course."
Horatio hated outsiders, especially the FBI. But if the case would take her this long and is high profile, it means those victims could get justice. As angry as he is about it, he understands. And with the county not having to pay for her replacement, he knows he can't argue otherwise anyway.
"She'll be available via email. Everyone involved is being kept hush hush. I'm not sure exactly how high up this goes but she's pretty much on her way."
Horatio's eyes widened at this information. He knows there's been high profile murders in Quantico and she probably was called there. He opens his laptop to check his email and responds to the Chief "Thank you for telling me, I'm aware there's a maniac running around Virginia targeting some agents. She was concerned as she knows an undercover agent in the area as well. I'll check in with her. Have a good day". Upon finding her email, he hangs up before the Chief could bid his farewell.
There in her typical voice was her confirming that she would be heading over to the Quantico case. He's quite proud she can add this to her resume. She deserves a lot due to her hard work. Eric himself is in Georgia working on a serial killer case. Ryan and Walter decided to go on a cruise. Natalia and Sam were working on a serial bank robbery with the Tallahassee Police Department and he decided to accompany Yelina and Ray on a vacation to NYC and Niagara. Everything was calm, too calm. I'm so used to chaos, having calmness and stability is unnerving huh?
He types a congratulations and a temporary farewell with a promise to keep in contact and he leaves work alone with a shut of his laptop.
Calleigh heads back to their room after spending the afternoon on the beach outside the house. Off in the distance she watched security watching her, at least they were being discreet.
This false sense of privacy at least allowed her to think about how she would carry herself. It seems no matter what, she's trapped. They wanted her here and they would get it. Diego already told her that she would be away on an FBI assignment for the time being. And with Horatio's warning about the Chief, she knew he was also involved in this.
Esteban hasn't done this before and by the look of things they want her to be as comfortable she can at least set boundaries. And as for starting trouble? She'll have to wait until she figures out the security cycles. Slipping away would test the scope of their reach and the consequences she'll face. While they wouldn't risk hurting her, she knows that she will end up in deep trouble. Vina told her she'd better make sure she enjoys whatever ounce of freedom she got by misbehaving because she'll be on lock down for a while after.
And they are expecting her to act out, they've read her files, they know she likes to test and push limits. She wouldn't be a CSI if she didn't at least try once. And maybe one chance is all she'll get until she can build up trust with them again. So even if she's just going to test them just as they;re testing her here… she better make sure she enjoys it to the fullest.
Sneaking out, even for an hour or two would be the best to do just to test the waters. If they don't catch her then she can push for another hour, but if they do catch her, she'll know just how observant they are. I can find a secluded spot on the coast and see how that 's not like I'm calling for help or anything.
"Hey, I wasn't told you were here until a few minutes ago." She turns to see Esteban hobble his way towards her on crutches. Despite her inner turmoil, she finds herself laughing at the way the morning went. "I woke up, you were gone and was sad because you left. I'm glad it wasn't for long though."
"You said you wouldn't extort or kidnap me." he looked to her confused.
"I didn't, Papi said you came here willingly." taking a seat beside her, she felt everything hit her as his scent did.
"He pretty much talked me into the car and then when I was expecting a thank you brunch, let me know what was happening. Even if I wanted to fight and run, I wasn't able to."
He shakes his head apologetically, "I'm sorry about that. He just wants the best for me and probably figured it would be easier to convince you if done that way. I wanted you to come naturally but didn't come up with a good idea even with the time I had to. How are you feeling?" she turned to look at him with a fire in her eyes.
"This isn't like Beauty and the Beast or 50 Shades of Grey. I'm not going to fall in love with you just because you exist. I don't want any more innocent women harmed, my colleagues either. This is a business transaction. I- maybe I can learn to love you but our motives are vastly different. From what I'm hearing, you're new to all this romance, so give me time to get used to… all this your family has got going on." she chokes up at the end and he wraps his arm around her, his head coming to rest on hers.
"It's okay Leigh, I understand. I can wait for you to love me. I won't force anything at all. Papi y Abuela says that forcing you will only allow you the space to act out. I've gone through your files too, you know? It didn't tell me your favorite color or anything but it's a start." he smiles down at her softly. His eyes were genuine, Diego (unnecessarily) spoke about Esteban being blunt and honest and she hated it. What's up with me and emotional men?
"It's pink, stereotypical I know. But it is. Yours?" he smiles again
"It's green, my mother had green eyes. Forest green specifically. It's calming to me, always has been." Calleigh had asked earlier about the Mother but Diego had told her he wasn't ready to speak on it.
"I was wondering what happened to her. Even before all… this" his face dropped too, mirroring his father's dejected disposition. He looked down before turning to look her directly in her eyes. The intensity of his stare froze her in her place.
"She was an amazing woman, caring, loving, selfless and was always there when I or Papi needed comfort. I was 4 when they told me I would be a big brother…." he trailed off looking away for a second and Calleigh allowed her mind to roam now that the intensity was broken. So there's another Navarro running around? Just great! He turns back to her, tears swimming in his eyes causing her to gasp.
"I remember the day MariAnna was born, Papi was excited and Abuela and I were at home waiting for me to be able to go. Except when the phone call came, Abuela broke down in tears. I didn't know what was happening and the ride to the hospital was quiet. I didn't know what was happening but knew it wasn't good. My little sister was here, why is Abuela so sad. Papi was crying when we got to the hospital. He hugged me and sat me on his lap. I don't remember all he said but I remember the tone. MariAnna went to god that day and Mami might go to keep her company he told me." Calleigh gasps audibly this time, understanding immediately why he was intense.
She herself isn't someone who divulges family info, some memories were too painful. He continues on despite her verbal outburst.
"Uhm… apparently Mami had a torn placenta but it wasn't caught in time and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck as well. Anna suffocated during birth and Mami was hemorrhaging. The doctors said there wasn't anything they could do. No one knew how much time she had left if she didn't heal herself.
"I went to visit her and she was still so beautiful, so happy. Telling me about how if anything happened, she would always be watching me. She had this calm way about her. Despite being faced with death, she was soft. And it came out of nowhere, one moment she was telling me about how she wanted me to start a family of my own and the next… she started to bleed out" Calleigh felt herself tear up. She hated finding out backstories to terrible people. The pain and suffering is real and she can sympathize but it will never justify what they grew up to be. She rubbed a hand along his back.
"It was insane, watching the blood pour from her eyes, nose, ears and mouth. It came out of nowhere really. She just fell over and no matter how hard I shook, she wouldn't wake back up. The machines were going off and the doctors were screaming. Papi came in and he was emotional too. I've never seen him cry until that day and for years after." Esteban looked faraway now, his eyes glazing as he looked back on those tough years.
"Esteban…" he turns to her.
"Thank you for sharing that. I know it's rough and I won't spew any of that nonsense people do when giving condolences. I'm not very open and I need time in order to do so. But just know I feel for you. It'll be okay. We'll take this one day at a time, yea?" she smiles up at him and his eyes slowly come back to the moment before he nods. "Let's head to bed, we both had a long day." She turns the blankets down and climbs in.
It never occurred to her they'd have to sleep together until now. He had changed clothes, she assumes in Miami, and is now struggling to get his shorts over the cast. Stripped down to only his boxers he climbs in after her. She, cut off emotionally despite the moment they just shared, turned her back to him. Despite that, she feels his arm slither over her waist and pull her to him. Flush to his chest, she feels him nuzzle into her neck and the air of him breathing in her scent.
She wills herself not to stiffen up in disgust or cringe as his exhale brushes against her neck. "Good night Leigh" he says, voice laden with drug aided sleepiness. "Good night" she answers and in no time she feels him slither off to dreamland.
With a final sigh of discontent she forces herself to go to sleep, it takes a few hours regardless.
