Chapter 7

Who is doing this?

Zeke is the first one back in the frat house. He opens the door with such a force, the door hits the wall. He walks in, not caring about the plaster that is now dented with a small hole in the wall. Tobias closes the door behind us, as Zeke and I walk towards one of the many sitting rooms on the bottom level. Marlene is right behind me. Shauna is sitting down on one of the longer couches with her arm around her sister, Lynn, who seems to be inconsolable at the moment.

We all knew that Lynn and Lauren were something, but they never had a title. They had been that way for years, even during High School. Lynn has always been patient with Lauren and her commitment issues. Even though Lauren never referred to Lynn as her official girlfriend, she only dated and wanted to be with Lynn. We all knew it. Where one went the other did too.

Matthew, Uriah's roommate, sits across from them on the smaller couch. His elbows resting on his knees, as his face is filled with concern and worry. When he sees Zeke fastly approaching him he stands, reaching out to shake Zeke's hand awkwardly. It's something that started back at the start of the school year when they first met. For some reason no one has ever really warmed up to Matthew's presence, not even Nita.

"What the hell happened?" Zeke asks, his tone almost too cold. "What do we know?" He says, trying to sound more sympathetic again. I expect Lynn to answer, but instead Shauna does.

"Lauren was found murdered." Shauna begins, "Apparently Lynn and Lauren went out to a bar for some drinks with a few other friends. Lauren went to the bathroom and never came back."

"So what? Lauren was known to take off all the time, that doesn't mean she is dead." He blurts out. Between losing Uriah, Marlene getting attacked, and now this… I don't understand how any of us are still standing.

"They found her body, hours later…" Shauna whispered.

"Her body." Zeke repeats in disbelief.

"It appears her kidney has been removed." She says.

"But people live with one kidney all the time. They don't just die from that." Matthew jumps in. We all stop and stare at him, as if he had no right to speak.

"That's not what killed her. Her throat was…. She fought back though… The medical examiner said that there were defensive wounds…" Shauna finishes, her words struggling to come out.

"Christ." Tobias says, running his hand through his hair. I stand motionless and speechless. Why would someone do this to her? To Uriah? To any of us? This can't be just a coincidence. I wipe the tears from my eyes, this can't be happening.

"What happened to Uriah? Where is he?" Shauna asks. For the first time, Lynn lifts her head waiting for Zeke to answer. I turn my back towards the windows, looking out into the night while Zeke relays all that has happened. He tells them how Uriah and Marlene went out to look-out point and how he too disappeared. But not before landing head first on his car, along with a person dressed in a slicker trying to attack Marlene. Could this have really been the same person doing all of this?

"So the police aren't doing anything?" Lynn finally says, putting two and two together.

"Then what do we do?" Shauna asks.

"We fight." Zeke says, "We fight fire with fire… We won't stop until we get those sons of a bitches."

"Alright Rambo… but that won't work until we know who the hell is doing all of this." Marlene says, for the first time. I can see the growing rage behind her eyes that is ruling her right now. I know without a shadow of a doubt both her and Zeke won't stop until whoever did this is dead.

"Well you got any ideas… I'm all ears." Zeke fires back.

"How about we figure out who is doing all of this?" Tobias suggests.

"How?" Lynn asks.

"We know how everyone was murdered…. There has to be a connection… they were all murdered for a reason and differently." Tobias points out.

"How the fuck would you know?" Zeke asks, his voice a little harsh.

"I'm a teacher's assistant in Psych class… Why else would you think." Tobias answers, sarcastically.

"Alright, enough you two…" I say, breaking up whatever they are about to begin. I take a deep breath, turning towards Tobias, "Where do we start?"

"Well… we know that Nita was murdered with someone in the back seat…" Tobias begins.

"And Christina was murdered by someone impersonating to be… her… then cutting her wrist and …. and then leaving a message the next morning," I chim in, struggling to find the right words.

"Uriah was attacked and hung, and then I was attacked…" Marlene continues.

"Lauren was killed by having her throat slashed,"Shauna says.

"No… her kidney was originally removed though." Matthew says, his eyes glued to his iphone. His fingers running over the screen faster than I have ever seen as he seems to be putting two and two together.

"What are you thinking?" I ask. Matthew is smart. He sees things differently than others do.

"Urban Legends." He answers, finally looking towards me. "The murderers… the are all done by Urban Legends." He repeats. "The kidney heist, the message on the wall, the boyfriend prank, the hiding in the back seat… each one is an urban legend." He continues off. "It all fits."

"We need to tell the cops." Tobias says.

"You mean the cops that think my brother pranked his girlfriend by faking his own murder and attacked her? Those cops!" Zeke bursts out, his anger beginning to get the best of him.

"So then what do we do?" Shauna asked. Zeke shakes his head, his lips pressing into a straight line, lost for words.

"Look… We go to the cops. We talk to different Detectives, someone there has to help us." Marlene insists. I can see the fear she is holding back, the same fear that is radiating off of all of us.

"Fine." Zeke says, giving in.

"Why don't I stay behind with Lynn…" Matthew offers, glancing towards Lynn who is balled up on the couch. Her frame is shivering, as tears continue to roll down her cheeks. We all nod, agreeing that as long as she keeps her cellphone on her she should be okay here. After all, we won't be far.

I sit sandwiched in the back seat between both Tobias and Marlene. Zeke insisted on being the one to drive again and Shauna called shotgun. At first, we worried that the three of us wouldn't fit back here. But my petite body and Tobias' arm that he has draped over the back of the seat helps with the room.

Zeke turns on a dark street that curves a little sharper than I like. Especially at his speed, for some strange reason Zeke seems to be in a hurry to get to the police station. I glance outside on the right side of the car seeing nothing but trees fly back fast. On my left, a body of water. I take a deep breath, wishing to calm my running nerves.

What if they don't believe us? What if they think this is another prank, or worse think this is still part of them all?

A fast moving car approaches us, coming from the opposite side of the road. The headlights are turned off as they curve around the street. My stomach drops, remember Matthew repeating that all these murders are connected… That they are all based on Urban Legends. I recall one of the many I have heard about as Zeke begins to curse as he reaches for his headlights, to warn the other driver that his headlights are off.

"No. Dont.!" I yell in warning. But it's too late. The other car has already turned on the lights, braking hard once they pass us and turning the car towards us.

"Who is that?" Marlene asks.

"It's them." Tobias yells at the same time.

"Zeke, go faster. Don't stop!" I yell, as Shauna pleads to let the other car pass. Is she crazy? If we stop, God knows what will and can happen to us.

Our car jerks forward when it's hit from the back. I glance behind us, only to yell in time for another jerk. Zeke curses out as he struggles to keep control of the car. I take a deep breath, holding on tightly to anything that I can. Tobias grips the oh shit bar above his head, as Marlene holds on to Zeke's seat. The other car speeds up more, gaining speed as they begin to come around us, they force their car into our lane forcing us to drive off the road. Zeke loses control of the car within a matter of seconds, sending the car into the dark trees. The car hits a few different smaller trees strong enough to have us flip over before finally landing on its side between more trees.

My body shakes from both fear and adrenaline. My body that was thrown around the car hurts more than I ever thought it could. I call out to the others, but my fear grows even more when it's not returned by anyone's calls or cries. I bravely open my eyes, horrified by the sight before me.

Zeke's face has been smashed against the windshield. As for Shauna, she appears to have a large tree branch stuck into her chest. I know without a shadow of a doubt they are both dead. I let out a cry, wishing this could all be just a dream.

"Marlene, Tobias…" I called out. Marlene, who seems to not be moving, looks as if she is still breathing. I let out a sigh of relief at her rising chest. "Tobias?" I call out, feeling movement of breathing from under me. I turned my head, seeing that he had been the one to shield my body from heading towards what I should have hit, the window. I sigh once again when I hear him groan in pain. He is not dead. No. He is alive. In what condition, I'm not sure. But he's not dead.

"What happened?" He finally asks.

"We were in an accident," I answered while looking around.

"What about the others?" He asks.

"It's not good." I begin. But stop myself… I glance down at him, both of us exchange the look that says exactly what I can't . I begin to slowly lift my body from his, hoping to give him some relief. Instead I'm met with a large scream from his lips, as he now realizes his right leg is impaled by a branch that came through his door.

"Tobias." I call out, my hand rushing to the branch.

"Leave it. Don't pull it out. I might bleed out." He blurts out. His voice is in agony.

"What do I do?" I ask.

"You need to go get help." He says. Just as we hear a door of what could only be the other car slams shut. We are both stunned for a moment. What do we do? Tobias can't move. Marlene is knocked out cold. I can't move either one of them by myself.

"Tris go." He whispers. I shake my head, no. I can't leave him. "Go now! Get help." He says, pushing me away from him. There's no time to argue, the footsteps are getting closer.

"I'll be right back, I promise." I promise, I lean down kissing his lips quickly as I begin to climb up and out of the other window. Every muscle in my body aches as I pull myself through the small window and out of the side of the car. I sit on my heels for a moment when I reach outside. Looking around the car, I try to be still and quiet for a moment. But that's when I see it, a person hidden in the trees. Their body is covered in a large slicker jacket, the hood is up keeping their identity from me. For a second we just stare off at each other, daring the other to move first. They begin to move towards me first. Their action sends me into a sprint as I figure out how to climb down and deeper into the woods. I yell loudly, as they catch up behind me. My legs are fast even with the slight limp I have. It's no doubt an injury I had in the accident, but I have no time to stop and figure out how badly I'm hurt. Every step I take they seem to be gaining on me. I scream even louder than I have ever had before. Hating that I feel as if I'm being hunted down like an animal. My feet nearly trip when I hear Tobias scream my name, obviously distraught over not knowing what is happening and being trapped in the car.

Something hard hits me in the back of my head, making the edges of my vision begin to blacken. I know if I give into the darkness, I will black out. I will die. But the urge is so strong to give into the darkness.

"Well, hello, Tris." A familiar voice calls out for me. The voice… I know that voice… suddenly the darkness is beyond stronger than me, I give into it, feeling like I have no other choice, letting the black take me under. "Did you miss me, Bitch?" The person says before I am taken over.
