The weather in New York got significantly colder in the following weeks. Calvin was excited about his first basketball game and it was all he could talk about the entire week. By the time Saturday came he was up and ready well before the time to leave. Riley's parent's dropped her off before they had to leave for the game. Thankfully it was Fin and Amanda's weekend to be on call so Olivia had no concerns about being called in especially after an all hands on deck weekend the weekend before. She didn't really get to see Alex or Calvin that entire weekend due to the case they caught.
Alex and Olivia both wore their jerseys with Calvin's name and number on it to the game. They were both extremely excited for him.
When they got to the game Calvin went to the locker room to meet with his team. Alex, Olivia, Riley went to sit up in the bleachers waiting for the game to start. Before the game started Alex went to grab them water and popcorn to have for the game. Alex paid for the three water and two popcorn and made her way back to her seat. Alex handed Riley water and popcorn. She gave Olivia water and offered her some popcorn which she took a few pieces of, popping it into her mouth. Olivia finished chewing, kissing Alex on the cheek.
"Thank you sweetheart" Olivia says to Alex.
Alex grinned back at her in joy. Alex loved being on the receiving end of Olivia's affection.
Riley took a look at them and leaned forward to look around Olivia at Alex.
"Thank you Ms.Cabot" Riley quietly says.
"You're welcome!" Alex says back.
The game was starting and everyone was cheering when the teams came out. Calvin was put in for half the game, but he did really well scoring points for the team. They didn't end up winning that game.
When Calvin came over to them after the game he looked out of breath drinking his water. Olivia put her arm around him pulling him into a side hug Congratulating him on the baskets he made even though they didn't win.
"Thanks Ma" Calvin tells her begrudgingly.
"I agree Cal, you did great for your first game and there's always room for improvement" Alex says back supportively.
"Do you think we could go to the rec center and practice more?" Calvin asks them.
"You mean more than the twice a week you already practice?" Alex asked him.
Calvin nods, taking another drink.
"Sure" Alex agrees easily.
"We can go when you and Mom get back from your Sunday runs" Olivia says to them thinking of how they are going to work that into their schedules.
"Thanks guys!" Calvin says hugging both of them.
Riley was awkwardly standing off to the side of them. Calvin let go of his moms and held out his hand to Riley who excitedly grabbed it. They walked a bit ahead of Alex and Olivia swinging their hands together.
Olivia quickly shot off a text to Fin asking if he wanted to join them at the rec center tomorrow to shoot the basketball around.
Olivia looked over at Alex intertwining their hands together.
"I asked Fin if he wanted to come help Calvin shoot around tomorrow with us" Olivia tells her.
"I'm sure he'll love that" Alex says, chuckling back to her.
Olivia grins back at her, taking a step forward.
"What do you say to game night?" Olivia asked.
"I'd love too" Alex says back.
They walk behind Calvin and Riley to the car and head back to the apartment.
When they get back to the apartment Calvin goes to shower while Riley sits on the couch. Olivia makes sandwiches for lunch for everyone. Once lunch was eaten the kids played just dance in the living room while Alex sat at the table reading over case files for the upcoming week. Olivia took the opportunity to put away the mountain of clothes she was procrastinating on putting away.
A little while later in the day Calvin and Riley facetimed his grandparents. They invited Calvin out to their house for Thanksgiving break. Alex and Olivia agreed and the adults said they would coordinate it.
Olivia made chili for dinner which they all enjoyed since the weather was getting cooler out. Once dinner was done they broke out all the games they had. They started with sorry, then moved to mad gab, charades, life, and ended after hours of playing with euchre. It was fun for Alex and Olivia to teach the kids how to play it.
Calvin was yawning by the time Riley's dad came to pick her up on his way home. Shortly after she left Calvin went to bed. That left Alex and Olivia cuddled up on the couch under a throw blanket watching the lifetime channel. Olivia gave Alex a kiss at the top of her head as Alex nuzzled further into Olivia.
Olivia started to drift off soon after. Alex finished the movie before trying to wake Olivia.
"Liv" Alex says softly, gently shaking her awake.
Olivia blinked looking into Alex's soft smile looking down at her.
"Hey sweetheart, I must've fallen asleep" Olivia says yawning.
Alex nodded, standing up and holding her hand out for Olivia to grab. Olivia slapped her hand in Alex's allowing her to be pulled up.
They each get changed into pajamas and crawl into bed. Olivia went back to sleep fairly quickly while Alex stayed up a bit longer reading the book she keeps on her night stand.
Alex woke up to an empty bed. She rubbed her eyes and looked at the time on her phone. She saw it was after noon. She yawned and layed back down on the bed. She frowned when she didn't hear anything throughout the apartment. After a few minutes she got up to find her love and their son. She walked out the room to the living room/ kitchen area and didn't see either of them.
Alex saw a post it note on the table and smiled to herself knowing that it was Olivia's handwriting. Alex picked up the note that read
' you seemed like you needed the sleep, Calvin and I are meeting Fin at the rec center then we're getting lunch. Call when you wake up. We love you'
Alex went to the room where she left her phone and dialed out Olivia's phone number. The phone rang three times before Olivia's laughter filtered through the phone.
"Hey" Alex greets her
"Hey sleepyhead" Olivia says back softly.
"I got your message, how's practice?" Alex asks, sitting back on her bed.
"It's good, Calvin is giving Fin a run for his money." Olivia chuckles.
"I'm going easy on the kid" Fin says from somewhere in the background.
"Sure uncle Fin" Alex hears Calvin say.
Alex's heart swells with love.
"Are you guys ready for some lunch?" Alex asks her girlfriend.
"Absolutely. Hey guys, let's go get some lunch." Olivia says.
"Do you want to meet us at the toasties near Rockefeller?" Olivia asked her.
"Yes love, I'll see you soon" Alex agrees easily.
They said their goodbyes and hung up. Alex gets ready and meets them at the restaurant. When Alex gets there, she sees Olivia, Calvin and Fin already sitting at a table. She walks up to them taking a seat next to Olivia. Olivia gives Alex a kiss on the cheek in greeting.
"Hey mom" Calvin greets giving her a side hug.
Alex hugs back kissing his hair.
"Hi guys, I hear you were doing really well against Fin here" Alex teases.
"Ah well you know, I didn't wanna hurt his feelings" Fin says brushing it off.
"There's always next time Fin" Olivia says back chuckling patting his shoulder.
Calvin and Alex laugh at the interaction.
They order food and continue to eat when a shadow comes over their table. Fin looks up and sees Nick and his daughter standing there.
"Hey man" Fin says in greeting.
"Hey guys, fancy seeing you here" He says to them.
"We were grabbing lunch after Calvin and Fin's pick up game" Alex says to him as Olivia fluffs Calvins hair.
"Ah, I didn't know you had a kid." Nick says, a face showing a bit of surprise.
"She does, we do, Calvin this is Detective Nick Amaro, Nick this is Calvin, my and Alex's son" Olivia tells him, eyes showing with pride looking over at her girlfriend and son.
Calvin holds out his hand towards him.
"It's nice to meet you" he says lightly.
Nick shakes his hand.
"It's nice to meet you too" Nick says back, giving a surprised look to the three adults around him.
"This is my daughter, Zara" Nick continued, putting his hand on her shoulder.
"Hi" Zara greets them.
They all echo back versions of hello to her.
Fin's phone goes off and he has to leave. He and Amanda caught a case. He leaves some money for his portion with Liv.
"Catch ya on the flip side my man" Fin says to Calvin fist bumping him on his way out.
"We are actually going to head out too, we wanted to take Calvin out for frozen yogurt before heading back home. You're welcome to have the table though" Alex says to Nick getting up from her seat.
Nick nods back to her but not really paying attention to what she's saying because he looks like he's lost in thought.
"Liv, do you mind getting Cal a box for his leftovers and grab the check?" Alex asks, putting on her coat.
"Of course" Olivia quips, heading up to the front to talk to the cashier.
Nick and his daughter sat down at the table.
Calvin put his coat on too, zipping it up and putting his hat on afterwards.
Olivia comes back over with the receipt from the meal and Calvin's box.
"Ready to go?" Olivia asks them.
"Mom, do you think they will have the swirl this time?" Calvin asks excitedly.
"I don't know bud, we will just have to go see!" Olivia replied, grinning at his excitement.
"Liv" Nick says finally out of his stupor.
Olivia looks over at him then back to Alex and Calvin.
"You guys go ahead, I'll meet you outside" Olivia tells them.
Alex puts her arm around Calvin and they walk to the door.
"You and Cabot? Really? How didn't I know? Were you together while she was our ADA? Does Cragen know?" Nick asks spitting off questions.
"You didn't know because it's my business. Cragen knew and so did Cutter, we had our bases covered for work. Alex and Calvin are my family and if you have a problem with that then-" Olivia says getting annoyed.
Nick puts his hand up shaking his head
"Woah, Woah, no, of course I don't have a problem with Alex, we were learning to trust each other and this seems like a big secret" Nick explains.
"Not a secret, just didn't come up" Olivia says shrugging.
"Have a good day with your daughter Nick, I'll see you tomorrow" Olivia says to him and waves at Zara before heading out to Alex and Calvin standing right outside the restaurant doors.
The next few days went by in a blur. Calvin went to Vermont for Thanksgiving with his grandparents. Olivia worked the holiday so she could have Christmas off for their trip. Alex stopped by the precinct with Chinese so that they could at least spend some time together for the holiday.
The rest of November went by and faded into December.
Calvin's basketball team won their finals. Olivia and Alex took him out for pizza and ice skating to celebrate.
The night of the office Christmas party they let Calvin have a sleepover with his friends Matt and Emily.
Alex was running late to the party but Olivia was expecting her any moment.
Olivia and Melinda were making small talk.
"So you're working tomorrow?" Melinda asked her.
"We drew the short straw, but Christmas eve I'm off to the Bahamas" Olivia says grinning in happiness.
"Mm, good for you. With whom?" Melinda asks.
"My lovely girlfriend and our son." Olivia says, still grinning.
"Oh, anyone I know?" Melinda asked, chuckling.
Alex chose that moment to make her way through the room and up to Olivia and Melinda.
Alex was wearing the same color blue Olivia was wearing but she had a knee length dress and V cut neckline with a coat over it with her silver heels.
"Hey! Sorry, I'm so late" Alex says in greeting to them.
"Party's barely started, right Melinda?" Olivia says grinning at Alex.
Alex's cheeks pinkish from the cold winter wind.
Melinda nods in agreement and says to her " you haven't missed much, just Olivia here about to tell me who this lovely girlfriend of hers is that managed to sweep her away for the holidays" Melinda says cheekily.
"That would be me" Alex says, smiling widely at her.
"About time, you know I always had a feeling" Melinda says laughing.
They all laugh at that.
"We should have you over for dinner, once all the holidays are over" Alex tells her.
"Oh, absolutely!" Melinda agrees.
Melinda sees someone trying to get her attention.
"Oh, excuse me. Merry Christmas" Melinda says to them and walks away.
When they are left alone Olivia grins at her and places a quick kiss on Alex's cheek.
"Let's get you some punch" Olivia says after pulling away.
"Yes, let's get punch and mingle" Alex agrees, threading their fingers together.
A little while later Alex and Olivia were talking to a couple detectives from another unit when Fin's ex wife walked up to them. Olivia turned away from the detectives to face her.
"Teresa, everything okay?" Olivia questioned
"I need Fin, Sergeant said he's here." Teresa said back looking around for Fin.
"Yea, he's right over there" Olivia tells her pointing to where Fin and Melinda are talking.
The detectives they were talking to walked away and Amanda came up to them.
"Problem?" Amanda asked.
"That's Fin's ex-wife , something's wrong" Olivia responds.
Melinda walks back by us, bidding us a goodnight and telling us to have a good time on our trip.
"Where are you guys going?" Amanda asks us.
"We are going to the Bahamas, warm air, blue beaches, hot sand. I can't wait" Alex says dreamily.
"It's going to be a great time. We got an all exclusive resort. We are surprising Calvin for Christmas. He's never been out of the country before" Olivia tells her smiling at the thought of how excited their son is going to be.
"Olivia you haven't been many places either" Alex counters amused.
"Well we're just going to have to rectify that, aren't we" Olivia says flirty.
"Wait, wait, how did y'all manage to keep this a secret from him?" Amanda asks, looking between them.
"He knows we are going somewhere for the holidays and we told him to pack warm and bring swimwear but he just doesn't know where" Alex explained to her.
Olivia takes a sip of her punch nodding in agreement.
They see Teresa walk away from Fin so they go over to him.
"You okay?" Olivia asked
"My ex-brother-in -law got locked up again." Fin says gruffy then looks at Amanda " like you said family's complicated" Fin says shaking his head.
Alex puts her hand on Fin's shoulder in support.
"Teresa wants me to go down to the 55th precinct to hear his side of the story" Fin tells them.
"I'll go with you" Amanda says.
"See you tomorrow Liv, have a good night Alex" Fin tells them and starts walking away.
Amanda waves at them and follows after them.
They stayed a little longer and then decided to take a cab back home.
When they got back to the apartment they called Calvin to wish him a goodnight. He was having fun with his friends eating junk and playing video games.
Alex and Olivia snuggled under a throw blanket on the couch. They put on a miracle on 34th street. They watched the movie sipping on hot chocolate and cuddled together enjoying their night together.
While Olivia went to work the following day to help Fin with the case for his ex-brother-in-law, Alex stayed home finishing up their packing.
Alex finished packing everything they needed. She put all their suitcases in the front room so they could be ready to go the next day. When she was done she sat out the couple gifts she had wrapped for Calvin and Olivia under the tree. They decided to open gifts before they went on vacation.
Calvin was dropped off later in the afternoon. When he opened the door to the apartment with his key he smelled cookies being baked. He heard Christmas music playing and Alex singing along to jingle bells.
"Ma! The cookies smell so good" Calvin says, making his way to the kitchen.
"Hey sweetheart" Alex says smiling up at him from where she just checked on the cookies she had in the oven.
"Can I have one?" Calvin asks.
"Sure! These ones should be cooled down enough" Alex says pointing to the ones on the plate at the table.
Calvin grabbed a snowman one and bit into it.
"So good!" He says around the cookie.
Alex chuckles at him.
"Do you want to help me decorate them?" Alex asks him while she sits down all the different colored icing on the table and then pulls out her chair to sit down.
"Definitely!" Calvin shouts excitedly.
"Wash your hands first" Alex tells him.
Calvin washes his hands and dries them.
He sits on the opposite side of the table from Alex and they start decorating the cookies that have already cooled down.
Later that night all the cookies they baked were decorated and sitting on a plate on the table for dessert.
Alex had cleaned up their mess and had started making dinner. Alex made a very small ham, not wanting food to go to waste since they won't be home to eat it, with potatoes, rolls and green beans.
By the time dinner was being finished Olivia came home. Olivia saw Calvin sitting at the table and Alex grabbing the ham out the oven when she walked in.
"Mm, this smells great sweetheart" Olivia comments, taking off the coat and hanging it up.
"You're just in time babe, dinner just got finished" Alex tells her looking over her shoulder at Olivia coming into the kitchen.
Alex cut off the oven as Olivia passed her giving her a light kiss on the cheek. Olivia washed her hands and told Alex to sit down and she would get all the plates together. After Olivia passed out the plates to Calvin and Alex she made her own plate and sat down at the table with them.
Olivia offered to clean up all the dinner dishes.
When Olivia was done with the dishes they opened up the few gifts they all got each other. Calvin got a tree ornament made of the three of them from their trip to Maine. Alex and Olivia gushed at it and beamed at him, thanking him for the thoughtful gift. Calvin got new shoes and a couple games for his xbox. Alex got Olivia a new watch and scarf. Olivia got Alex a matching necklace and bracelet set. They all thanked each other for the gifts and hugged.
Once all the wrapping paper was thrown away Olivia brought the cookies to the coffee table. They told Calvin he was able to choose the Christmas movie for the night. He decided on the grinch. They finished their night eating cookies, drinking hot chocolate and watching how the grinch stole Christmas.
The closer the flight time got the more worried Alex was that they were going to miss it. Olivia had called earlier in the day to tell them to go to the airport without her and she would just meet them there. They were sitting in their seats waiting for take off and they saw Olivia finally make it on the plane. Olivia looked over at Alex, smiling , holding her hand. Calvin wanted to sit by the window and Olivia looked over at him grinning.
"Are you ready?" Olivia asked him.
"Yes!" Calvin says excitedly looking out the window.
The plane started to take off. They were officially on their way to vacation.
