It's been two months since the near fight with the Volturi.
Things had eased up a great deal after Aro deemed it safe for Reneesme to live. Finding Nahuel had been near impossible but Alice had been more than persistent and positive about it.
And while at first Jasper hadn't been able to understand the reason behind her obsession over finding Nahuel he had soon learnt the reason.
If Nahuel wasn't found there were gonna be deaths that would break them all apart.
Seth. Leah. Carlisle.
Jasper .
Reneesme would be safe. Yes. And Aro would die. Yes.
But at what cost?
She wasn't willing to lose him.
But things had gone well. There was no imminent threat breathing down their necks.
Alice had had to assure Carlisle she was capable of hiding things from Aro after this one worried about the Volturi finding out about Jasper. Because while it wasn't against the law God knows what Aro could attempt if he realized where did Jasper come from.
As if his fascination for Alice and Edward wasn't bad enough.
Reneesme was still growing without signs of danger. She now looked around 11 and seemed to resemble Edward even more.
He found it rather amazing how quick the girl grew.
He found himself smirking as he caught sight of his wife sitting at the living room with Reneesme, Rosalie and Bella. There were hundreds of multicolored beads scattered all over the coffee table and the four of them seemed rather immersed in their craft.
Esme was watching them from the couch with a smile that spoke little of the actual happiness exuding off of her. She was knitting a white scarf with magenta stripes that would without a doubt end up being a gift for Renesmee.
Carlisle sat alongside her with a book at hand and his lap serving to hold the yarn Esme was using. Emmett and Edward were playing videogames.
He leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed as he watched the rather relaxing scene before him.
Alice's smile was bright and she looked as stunning as ever with that dark red dress she wore. She bled with affection and calm.
Seeing Alice with Reneesme sometimes made him wonder if deep down she wanted a child. Even if she had assured him that she was perfectly happy with just the two of them. Three .
The Major had been... odd since that day in the forest. He rarely fronted around the Cullens and if he did it was with Renesmee. He still refused to tell him what had he done and he kept taking the front from him whenever Alice tried to tell him. But if the Cullen's wariness was something to go by it hadn't been good.
His train of thoughts derailed as Esme's emotions flickered with a stain of sadness that made him glance at her.
She was still smiling but her gaze was sad.
Ah.
She must be thinking the same as Rosalie. How lucky Bella and Edward are.
He sighed at it. If Esme was to find out what he was would she ask the same Rosalie would ask?
If with Rosalie he felt sick at the lie refusing that sort of request from the woman he had grown to see as a mother would break him apart.
But he couldn't curse them to this and even if he did manage to think past his guilt and protective nature there was the issue of what being pregnant brought.
He would end up bringing them immeasurable guilt and suffering.
He couldn't do that to them.
His attention was brought back to the present when he felt a little collision on his legs and as he looked down it was be met with Renesmee's bright smile. Her small arms around him. It didn't matter what Emmett said he knew in his heart of hearts that Reneesme favored him over Emmett.
He could feel her anxious emotions as she stepped back and he knelt for her. She was hiding something behind her and he didn't need to be a genius to know what she may be hiding.
She gathered her confidence and brought her hands forward to reveal a blue bracelet.
Renesmee had taken it to make bracelets and collars with the beads Charlie got her and so far she had taken it to make at least one for each person that crossed her path.
Even The Major got one before him. His had dark green, orange and white glittering beads with a few turtle shaped and cat shaped beads. Letters beads spelling "Jor".
Now it seems it was his turn to have one.
Some beads had glitter and other star shapes. Letter beads spelling "Jazz".
-For me?- He asked with a light smile. She nodded with a smile of her own.- Why thank you.- He took the bracelet from her hands and slipped it around his right wrist which held the Cullen's crest bracelet. He gave a show of admiring her work for a moment before giving her his verdict.- I must say it, it's quite pretty.
She lit up with absolute pride at the compliment before running back to a grinning Alice and an amused Bella. Rosalie whispering something to Renesmee that made the girl giggle.
He smiled at it. To think that this was the kind of life he would end with. He could have never expected that he would go from being the South's terror and an assassin to living a domesticated almost human life. To be able to feel such peace.
It was a nice change.
One he hoped lasted forever.
~~~~~~~~
Wrestling after hunting had become a familiar thing to Jasper. Emmett would grab him and slam into him. Attempt to bring him down.
All of it was familiar.
What wasn't familiar was the ache he ended with. And once both of them returned back home he took advantage of the fact that he needed to take a shower to go to his room.
Decades of fight and he could have never expected himself capable of developing something as unfamiliar as the bruise he was sporting on his left side from where Emmett had slammed his arm against. He stared at it on the mirror feeling both confused and incredulous.
"What the hell's this?"- The Major asked sounding as confused as Jasper felt. The reflection on the mirror grabbing at his side.
-A bruise.
"A bruise? We dun't git bruises ."
-Apparently we do.- Jasper told poking at the dark stain adorning his ribs and wincing at the unexpected flare of pain that came from it. It trailed from his ribs down to somewhere on his hip. He unbuttoned his pants and pulled at his underwear to get a better look. It was all over his hip and thigh . Was this because Emmett slammed into him? How? This had never happened before.
"Give meh the body." - The Major demanded.
-What for?- Jasper asked suspiciously at the sudden dangerous tone.
"'M gonna teach Emmett what happens when he crosses the line."
-You ain't teachin' anythin' to anyone.- Jasper snapped glaring at The Major who didn't hesitate to glare back.
"He crossed the line!"
-What line? As far as I'm aware he had no intentions to harm me and this... how is he to blame for this? I don't even know how this is even possible.
"'cause he is! An' ta think ah wanted ta train that traitor!"
-You-
The sudden knock on the door makes him flinch. He hadn't noticed the emotional signature in his room. Esme .
There was hesitation in her emotions. Confusion. Concern.
-Jasper?
-Yes ma'am?- He asked feeling tense. How much has she heard?
-I'm sorry, I thought you were already in the shower, I was just coming for your clothes.
Jasper looked down at himself. Right. His clothes were covered in mud.
-I didn't mean to overhear but... are you hurt?
Jasper didn't answer.
-Darling, can I come in?
"Dun't ya dare ta open that door Whitlock." - The Major warned sharply. He never called him by anything that wasn't "J.J" unless he was really pissed.
"I don't know what's happenin'."- Jasper told in defeat. The Major scoffed.
"An' what makes ya think she will? Their kind cain't git bruised. Ya need blood ta git bruises. An' trust meh, ya dun't wanna out yerself ta her."
"Why not? You don't even know how she will react."- Jasper defended starting to get irritated.
"Ah know. Trust meh. Do not tell her."
"I want her to know."
"Ya cain't tell her!"
"Why not? You don't know anythin'. You don't-"
"'Cause she's scared of us!"- The Major cut off. Jasper halted at that.
"What?"
"Ah asked her once an' she figured it out. There was... a lot of horror in her." - The Major ended up confessing.
-Jasper?
Esme's voice was filled with such concern... Jasper couldn't imagine her being terrified of him. She was good. Esme would never- She would never judge a book by its cover.. .. Right? What if she changed her mind? What if she was afraid of something else?
But what if she wasn't?
What if she was truly afraid of him?
He wouldn't be able to survive if he was to feel her terror.
And so biting back the urge to open the door he spoke.
-I'm sorry. But there are things you can't help me with. You don't have to worry though, I'll be fine.
Or at least he hoped so.
He could feel the distress from Esme. Concern.
Thus he took his clothes off and opened the door just enough to hand them to her.
-Darling, you do know you can trust me right? I'm your mother, I will always be here for you no matter what.
-I know... But this isn't somethin' you can help me with, can you please leave me alone?- He asked, voice coming out weaker than he would have wanted, he wanted her gone, because if he kept hearing her words, her voice, he would break down.
Break down over the fact that no matter what she said at the end she would be terrified of him.
Because he was a monster.
He felt her sadness and her concern. Her comfort.
Her anger and hatred.
But those last two weren't directed at him but at something else and if he had to guess he would bet she was feeling those towards Maria.
But this time Maria wasn't the one tormenting him.
It was Esme.
Esme's potential fear.
And he wished The Major hadn't said anything.
~~~~~~~~~~~
All of Alice's knowledge about black bloods came from Jasper himself.
So when she caught sight of his bruises she was as confused as he was.
-Does it hurt?- She couldn't help but ask as her fingers traced ever so carefully the outline of the bruise.
-No, at least not anymore, the skin just sort of feels stiff now.- Jasper muttered. He wasn't sure when but the pain had subsided to nothing but an ache at some point while he showered.
-Do you want venom?- Alice asked looking up at him. Venom usually helped him speed up his healing. He had been drinking less venom lately which she wasn't sure if it was normal or something she should worry about.
-I'm fine, it will heal, eventually.- He assured leaning in to catch her lips into a kiss.
But even if he said that Alice couldn't help but have a bad feeling.
Something bad was coming.
And something told her that it would happen soon.
