Truly, Madly, Deeply - Chapter 5
Bristles stroked, gliding her delicate fingers through her curls of pink.
Squinting as she adjusted herself in her seat, Wanda stared back with her pink orbs at her reflection. Her makeup had been done simply as usual, lips still colored in the same shade of the skies in Fairy World. Although it was more of a lavender tint, she wanted to try something different today. Today, tonight rather, she deemed it a special occasion.
Only a mere three days had passed since she first laid eyes on the shining emerald in her life. Quite literally she meant as both his hair and eyes were that shining shade of green. She now had a newfound appreciation for the color. Not that she didn't like it before or anything, it's just that she always had stuck with the pinkier hues of things. She couldn't help but wonder what he thought of the color pink?
Well she could ask him later as she was seeing him tonight. The thing is that Cosmo doesn't know she's coming to visit him at the diner.
Cosmo.
The name just rolls off the tongue for her. It was simple yet special for her. Sure many fairy's had gotten their names in reference to magic. However Cosmo's name seemed to derive from a special kind of magic. That was the magic of the stars. Unknown to most, Wanda understood that they held one of the most powerful types of magic. Like fairies, they also can grant wishes. She was yet to wish through the stars as she wanted to do it with someone special and for something she knew she wanted. Although she had the power to grant almost anything she wanted at her fingertips with her wand, the stars can grant wishes that were rule free and more abstract.
Speaking of granting wishes, Wanda's name was based on the word "wand." Get it? Wand? Wanda? Of course this would cause her to roll her eyes at this but it's what her parents came up with. She still loved her name because her mother picked it out. Of course her father was on board because of the pun but her mother saw beauty in it. They had come up with Wanda for their daughter's name but they ended up having twins. When her sister came bustling out with those rosy strawberry blonde locks of hair, a rare and recessive gene in the family, her parents just had to name her Blonda as a combination between "Wanda" and "Blonde."
Speaking of…
"Wanda, open the damn door! I need to talk to you."
With a thud, a sigh, and a quiet clatter which was Wanda's brush, her displeased mood, her chair as she stands to float to the door. The door creaks as it opens. "What do you want?"
Her question is ignored as she is pushed back as her blonde sister slams the door shut with force. "You got some nerve for not telling me."
Still confused, Wanda raises a brow, "Tell you about what?"
All her sister did for a response was laugh as she leaned her back against one of the posts of the white four poster bed in the middle of the room. Ceasing her laughter, she finally spoke, "Are you fucking kidding me? Oh my gosh you're pushing me over the deep end!"
With her arm raised from the vintage carved post, Blonda then dramatically fell onto the bed as she began to weep. Her mascara ran down her cheek so she used the rosy floral bedding to wipe them away.
Wanda just rolled her eyes, "Blonda, I seriously don't know what you want for me! And get off my bed!"
Blonda snapped from her sorrowful act and batted her eyelashes as mimicked her, "Oh I'm Wanda! I'm the less hotter sister and I am just soooo innocent! Blonda, I seriously don't know what you want from me! Ew get off my bed! Only my now EX boyfriend is allowed there!"
The pink haired fairy just froze as she stared back in shock at her sister's words. It was crystal clear of what Blonda wanted to talk about now. There was so much to unpack with that insult that she didn't know how to respond.
She knew that she didn't care about what had happened with her previous relationship because there was someone else now. Someone that was different couldn't even compare to how her ex had treated her. The thing was that she didn't even know him.
How was she supposed to explain that to Blonda, who is notorious for blabbing everything no matter if it is a secret or not? Hell, should she even explain that she was thinking of going to the diner he worked at that very evening?
No, the answer is very much a no.
With a snap of her fingers, Blonda pulled Wanda from her rambling mess of thoughts to hear an explanation. The blonde cocked her head as she shrilly asked, "Well? Are you going to explain yourself?"
Wanda cringed as spoke, "Juandissimo never once laid in my bed."
There was a moment of silence as Wanda refused to elaborate on that. She can't- wouldn't. Although she wanted more, Blonda groaned as she gave up waiting. Then she replied, "Is that why you're not with him anymore?"
Wanda shot her head up, unbelieving in the disrespectful question her sister just said. What she had gathered from that was her and Juandissimo broke up NOT because they weren't right for eachother or from cheating. No, instead the wonderful mind of her's assumed that it was because HE wouldn't be intimate with HER. In her twisted sister's mind, Wanda was the one who wanted that when that couldn't be farther from the truth. Did she appear to be that shallow to her? She didn't know what to think but she knew it hurt. If only her sister had known more to the story than what she apparently knows from secondhand conversation. From a source that was made to spread the chaotic mess that was her life. Wanda didn't even know who that was.
Unable to speak at this point as she was trying to keep herself from breaking down in tears, Wanda quietly whispered, "No."
"No? So what? You did have sex with him and you're standards are too high?" Blonda said with vile. "I don't understand, Wanda! You date one of the hottest guys at our school that every girl wants who, I might add, is head over heels in love with you and only you for just a few months, then out of nowhere you break it off! What is going on?"
That's when Wanda lost it. Her tears began to flow as she set herself on the ground, leaving her wings to rest. Quietly sobbing, she kneeled with her head bowing not wanting to look at her sister anymore.
Blonda was actually surprised by this. Sure she had seen Wanda cry before, many times due to her antics, but this was ridiculous. Why would she cry over a relationship that SHE ended? In Blonda's world that would be a thrill! All she wanted was an explanation and to share what she knows.
Without much debate, she stood on the ground now in front of Wanda's kneeling figure. Then the blonde started to speak, "Juandissimo came up to me when I was at the mall with my friends the other day. He asked how you were and I of course asked him what he was talking about since I thought you two were still together. He then told me that you broke up with him. I just came here because I know we hardly talk as much anymore because we have completely different lives but all I wanted was an-"
She knew that she did owe Blonda an explanation as she was right. They aren't as close as they used to be, Blonda can't read her mind so she had no idea what was going on. Although it was difficult, Wanda interjected with a soft sniffle, "An explanation." With that she was up on her wings again, as she raised her head. "The explanation that he failed to give you was that he cheated on me at Cupid's party. Everything you said about him being head over heels in love with me is wrong because that night I saw that he truly wasn't."
Blonda's eyes were wide now, "Wanda… I-I didn't-"
"He wanted to… have sex with me multiple times but I didn't let him because I wasn't ready and because I never really loved him. That was my first relationship so I didn't know what I was doing but I know that me and him were not right for eachother. I know you've been with countless other fairies and this may be hard to understand but I want actual love… not whatever that was… It felt more like I was a trophy, a prize to be won, because of my stupid so-called status." Wanda paused at this. "I don't even care about any of it."
Leaving her twin sister to ponder those words, Wanda began to push her away.
"I would like to be left alone now."
As Wanda reached to open the door for her sister to leave, Blonda's face twisted. Of course she was irked by that middle bit of her not understanding "love" but for some reason her reasoning behind Wanda's break up was different. So she decided to clue her sister in, hanging onto the door knob. "Look I agree that it's not right that he made you uncomfortable like that but there is more to think about here. What about your popularity, Wanda? You giving up the hottest guy in school wouldn't look good on your part. Also you said this happened at Cupid's? He was probably just drunk, which happens to me all the time. I think you should give him another chance… he looked miserable without you."
Pure revulsion built up in her as she just stared at the back of her sister's blonde head, drilling holes, "Popularity? Popularity is all you care about? Not if I'm happy? I guess it doesn't matter if I am miserable with him?"
Blonda snapped to face her sister, "How in hell could you possibly be miserable to be with someone like Juandissimo?"
Not even acknowledging her retort, Wanda just sighed, "Blonda, just get out because I don't want to talk to you right now."
Blonda just tsked as she left, slamming the door.
Wanda shook her head, wanting to clear her thoughts but they kept coming back. "I need to make myself forget about it all…"
Then she thought of it. The special fairy that changed everything for her.
A bright and cheery smile was now painted on her face as she grabbed her lavender raincoat and wand. She needed the quickest way to the other side of town and poofing there was the best answer to this. With a wave and cascade of sparkles, her room was left empty of her figure.
Now she stood in front of the diner doors.
"Here is your water!" With that, waves of water began to cover the table as the couple just stared at the waiter in awe but also on the verge of anger. One, how did he do that? Two, how did he still have a job here?
"Cosmo! Get over here!" Zephyr shouted from the counter with a disapproving glare.
With a nod, Cosmo hung his head low as he floated behind the counter with his co-worker. This had been the fourth accident of today and Zephyr was not having it. One of these days the manager was going to fire him but since they were so understaffed, none of that mattered. Cosmo still showed up for the underwage paycheck and customers still showed up for poor quality customer service.
That was all that mattered.
Once Cosmo arrived where he belonged, Zephyr just sighed. "Look, I'm sorry but I think you should go on break for a bit. We're not that busy and I can handle these tables."
Cosmo was about to agree until something caught his eye.
The beautiful large curl of rose.
There she stood at the front waiting to be seated. A smile painted on her beautiful lips, which were more of lavender hue today, he may add. He blinked multiple times, thinking he was just in a dream or hallucinating her appearance. She had come back after getting an entire milkshake spilled on her? There's no way, he thought.
Waving his hand in front of him, covering Cosmo's view of the girl, Zephyr asked, "Hey Cosmo? I can handle these tables and you can go-"
"I can go serve her!" Cosmo said, smiling as he began to flutter over.
Catching him by the wings, Zephyr raised a brow in confusion, "Cosmo hold on! What do you mean by that?"
Cosmo just blinked as he began to plead, "I want to be her waiter! Please! Please! Please-"
'Why in Fairy World was he acting like this now? Wasn't that the same girl he spilt that milkshake on?' She did come back so he couldn't really do anything about it. Zephyr shook his head, "Okay! Okay! I don't understand why you want to be her waiter so bad but I'll let you… just don't spill anything on her like you did last time." Then he muttered, "And like you did with the other customers."
"I promise! Promise!" Cosmo said, zipping over to the girl who was yet to be seated.
When he arrived in front of her, she turned to him with a gleaming smile, eyes filled curiosity. Everything in his world froze as he was at a loss with words. Cosmo then shook everything out of his system as it was now or never. "Hello! M-may I h-help you to your table?"
'Why am I so nervous all of a sudden?! I can't mess this up, not this time!' He thought to himself, ignoring the sweat forming on his palms. He shook these thoughts away as he turned to smile at her, not knowing how awkward it was with his braces.
She giggled, oh how pretty that giggle was. She then answered, "Yes please…"
That daze was coming back again as she reflected a much more prepossessing smile back at him. Her lips were so lush today… What was he thinking?! He didn't even know her name yet. Yes, yet, because he was going to ask for it today. He grabbed a menu for her as he guided her towards the back of the diner in a booth. He completely forgot to ask, go figure, but it appeared she was only dining for one. A part of him wondered why she didn't bring back her friends this time?
What was odd however was that she had ordered two milkshakes. She looked at him, "So… tell me. What milkshake do you recommend?"
Cosmo blinked again, looking up from his order notepad, she was asking for his opinion? For him that never happens as most would think his opinions were dumb. She didn't know that yet. She still had that sweet innocence of not knowing how much of an idiot he really was.
Cosmo looked over the menu and decided to order his favorite, "I'd say the strawberry milkshake. At least that's what I always get…"
She nodded, "That sounds delicious! Let me have that with a mint-chocolate shake, please!"
Cosmo made sure to write that down, not wanting to forget. I mean if it was for her, it would only hurt himself if he did forget. Luckily, her order was simple. "I'll get that out to you!"
He floated off to the counter to exchange the order as he let out a deep breath. He hadn't realized he was holding that in. Now that he had time to himself, he overthought everything that just happened. First her hair, then her giggle which then led to her smile, she sat down and ordered two milkshakes. That last bit stumped him as why would she order two of them?
Unless she was waiting for someone else.
He froze at the thought. It only made sense as why would a pretty girl like her be sitting alone here at the diner without her friends? His recommendation was probably some other much more attractive, smarter, and talented fairy than himself. Now he felt sillier than usual for even thinking he had a chance with her. She would never go out with someone like him. Here he thought that he was going to ask for her name and then they were going to get to know each other, date, get married, and then have a little fairy of their own-
Although he turned red at the thought of that last bit, he was getting way too ahead of himself. Cosmo didn't even know if that's what he wanted or if he ever did get into a relationship even if it was with her or not. His only example he had to go off from was his mother and that's exactly what she did. If that girl and him ever only got to at least a friendship, he'd be satisfied.
"Order up!" The chef shouted, ringing the bell.
With that, Cosmo hung his head low. He carefully grabbed the tray with the desserts as he began floating to what he thought was his doom. He bet that the lucky fairy who scored a date with the girl of his dreams would enjoy the strawberry shake much more than he ever did. By the time he looked up, he had graciously made it without a single spill to find…
That beautiful girl, smiling yet again, sitting at the booth alone. He knew how bad it felt to sit alone but this time it was a sign of relief. However there still left his question lingering.
He set the tray down as she grabbed hers, leaving the strawberry one. He shook as he was surprised he hadn't spilt anything on her. Cosmo was going to turn to leave but then she spoke, "Wait! I want to ask you something."
"Oh? What is it?" He gulped. That familiar dampness in his palms began to form again as his heart was pounding in his chest.
Her cheeks flushed, as she asked, "Well… I asked for your recommendation because I want you to have this shake with me. I want to get to know you…" Everything around him paused as the restaurant turned into the center of the galaxy where it was him and her. The source of light around them was the beauty of the stars as their glow bounced off the girl's. She grabbed his hand as they began floating through them together as they laughed. Clearing the stars from his eyes, he tried to keep himself up from fainting. Then she winked, "My treat."
Yes, he was deceased. Cosmo's wings gave out as he fell straight to the floor. Although he had just humiliated himself in front of her… again… the sweetness of the angel that sat before him didn't laugh or mock him but instead reached her arm out to help him up. "Oh my goodness! Are you okay?!"
Their faces were inches apart as he raised his head up to meet her gaze. He immediately retracted as he focused on his answer, "Y-yes… and to answer your question, I would love to!"
It seemed she had blushed again as she pulled her hand away, "Okay!"
Cosmo then sat across from her and took a sip from his drink of strawberry delight with whip cream. Zephyr wanted him on break anyways so got his wish anyways. She took a sip from her mint chocolate one and started off the conversation, "I love your diner's milkshakes! I feel like they make the best ones in Fairy World!"
Cosmo nodded in agreement, "They do! Before I started working here, I used to come up here and order them all the time. Strawberry has always been my favorite!"
"Really? So did I! I've always gravitated towards mint chocolate… it just tastes the best!" She then frowned, "I've missed coming here."
Cosmo looked at her, noticing this, "What happened?"
"Well, I've just been so busy with high school… and other things… but my friends brought me here to cheer me up! I am so happy they did because…" She paused, "Because I've felt happier since we've come here."
"Yes, me too!" Then he jumped back, realizing what he just said, "I mean… I'm happy that you're happier!"
She giggled at this, "Aw thank you. You know since we came here I thought about how we met and something about you just stood out to me… and it wasn't the fact that you spilled ice cream all over me."
The tips of his ears (and wings) reddened at this but realized that this was turning into a good thing. Cosmo couldn't help but beam at this. "Really?"
"Yes! And… I wanted to hear your name."
"My name? It's Cosmo." Cosmo said. Now was the perfect opportunity to get her's. "What's your's?"
With a smile, she proclaimed, "It's Wanda."
Wanda.
That was the most beautiful name he has ever heard of.
Cosmo and Wanda talked for what seemed like hours after that. They long finished their milkshakes but just sat at the table, discussing whatever came to mind. They learned that they are both attending their final year at Fairy High in the fall. Cosmo was overjoyed to hear this but saddened by how they hadn't met sooner. Although they went to the same school, they had extremely different experiences.
Cosmo told her about Luther and all the other sports teams who had tormented him in which Wanda responded with anger. She wasn't shocked as she knew what most of those people were like. Funnily enough, he had never talked about the cheer team a single time. That explains why they never had interacted before. That and the fact that Fairy High's student body was vast, that it was impossible to know every single fairy within their class.
She then went ahead to inform him about how she was picked out for the cheer team and how she had to deal with some of her teammates. Although there was unnecessary drama, she still enjoyed the activity side of it. Of course, she left out many details such as her ex-boyfriend and company that weren't exactly on her favorite fairies list at the moment. However, she did mention her sister.
"Wait, your sister is Blonda?!" Cosmo exclaimed, green eyes wide. "I mean I can kind of see it with the same eyes and swirly hair."
She nodded with a frown, for some reason it rubbed her the wrong way that he knew of her self centered sister instead of her. Did he think her sister was breathtaking like how most guys thought when they saw her? Was this jealousy? No way! "You know of her, huh? We're twin sisters but we couldn't be farther apart personality wise. Even though we argue a lot, she's still my sister and I respect her… no matter how much she drives me up the wall."
He chuckled at this, "Man, I can only imagine. I only know of her because she's best friends with the Tooth Fairy… who may or may have not stood up to Luther before."
"I mean… They are the most 'popular' girls in school." Wanda said, using air quotes. She cocked a brow at the latter statement, "Wait, the Tooth Fairy stood up to him?"
"Unexpected, right? That really stood out to me, especially when I used to have a crush on her…" he said as he looked up at her, "Definitely not anymore though…"
Wanda at first felt her soul leave her body when he said that but gave a mental sigh of relief. Still in the back of her mind she couldn't help to think what he meant by that?! All that mattered was that his eyes weren't for that trampy fairy anymore… as harsh as it sounds. What? She could be discourteous if it was in her own mind!
"Not anymore because… that was before. Before I realized that if I want to be with anyone I want to get to know them first before I free fall into it. I free fall into so many things but I know that love is something I don't want to do that for. I still don't know what love means but I'm still learning. I don't know what a lot of things mean." Cosmo sighed. "I'm probably not making any sense as usual."
To Wanda, however, that couldn't be further from the truth. What he had just said was everything she has been reflecting on for what seemed like forever. Before she didn't care or had a need for it because it never came up for her. Ever since the whole Juandissimo incident began it seemed like love was already figured out for her but that wasn't true love at all. Now she had this other being in her life who just summarized everything perfectly, even in her heart she knew that he would be the one who was able to.
"No, Cosmo, but I do understand!" Wanda replied. "Everything you just said made perfect sense to me."
That was the first time anyone had ever told him that.
