Sam heard a giggle and a great gust of air from above.

He immediately dove to the side, rolling on the ground and levelling his gun up at – damn it, at nothing, just a wispy chain of fog hanging in the air. As Sam watched, it dissipated within seconds, leaving him with the impression that there was something not quite right about it.

He rose to his feet.

The forest felt different now. The presence he'd sensed all around him since he'd entered the trees was gone.

Sam heard the crunch of a branch under a furtive foot and turned.
