Chapter 2
Big Time Conversations
It's been a week since the first of October hit, and Logan couldn't stop thinking about his conversation with his friends. Was he gay? Into guys instead of girls? But he always thought girls were pretty and hot…why would he be into guys? But James made a point….wait…what?... Those have been his thoughts for the past week as he tried to sort out his feelings and identity. Logan typically was the smart one, practical and logical. But…this just baffled him, and he didn't even know what to think.
Halloween was coming up fast, and he knew he needed to find a date for the Halloween Ball happening at the Palmwoods. But now…he was trying to figure out which gender he wanted to take to the Ball if he was going in the first place. If he chose a girl like Camille, he could go, no questions asked. Yet, if he chose to ask a guy, questions would rise, and he would be outing himself. Logan was not ready to deal with that yet. Everything was so confusing Logan had to turn to research to figure out what "outing himself" even meant. Yup, he wasn't panicking. But he was….
"LOGAN!"
Clapping hands made Logan snap out of his thoughts and look up. Kendall, James, and Carlos were standing around him. Looking around, Logan noticed class had been dismissed; he had been staring out the window in thought during the lesson. Logan mentally slapped himself as he gathered his things and stood up to join his friends.
"You okay, man? You've been out of it lately." James stated with a raised eyebrow as they started walking out of the classroom.
Nodding, Logan sighs, "Yeah, just a lot on my mind. I'll be okay, though, thanks."
The four make it out to the lobby and are about to head to the elevators when their hotel manager Mr. Bitters blocks their way. He grins at the four, "There you are - "
"What do you want?" Kendall questions with slight annoyance; he just wanted to get to their apartment and relax a little after class before Kelly came and got them for work.
Rolling his eyes, Mr. Bitter sighs. "I was wondering if you...Big Time Rush - "He states as he gestures his hands to the boys." - Could you perform a few songs at the Halloween Ball?
"Why do you want us to perform?" Carlos wonders as he raises an eyebrow a the manager. "I thought you couldn't stand us?"
"Look…truth, my hired band backed out at the last minute….and I can't get anyone else." Mr. Bitters explained as he sighed in annoyance. "...Plus, if you do this favor for me, it could help me like you more."
"Well, besides that, what else is in it for us?" Kendall questioned with a smirk.
"Besides me liking you hockey heads more, it'll help your band get more publicity. I have people from outside Palmswood coming to this Ball too. A lot of important people, and they could help Big Time Rush's name get out more."
Kendall, James, Logan, and Carlos look at one another with thought. Mr. Bitters watches them, wondering if they are communicating through telepathy. Finally, the four smile and look at their manager. James is the one to break the silence.
"Fine… We'll do it. As long as we can still dress up and have fun at the Ball." James grins as he switches his backpack from one shoulder to another.
"Deal. I'll see you, boys, at the Halloween Ball. I can't wait to see what songs you perform. Thanks again!"
Their manager leaves their pathway, and the four are confused about what happened. Together they walk to the elevators and get inside, waiting to go to their apartment 2J to drop off their bookbags before work. Once inside the elevator, the four look at one another.
"Did we just agree to perform at the Halloween Ball for Mr. Bitters?" Carlos questioned, still unsure of everything, then added. "Did Mr. Bitters also seem oddly nice to us too?"
"Yes, we did, and yes, he was Carlos…yes he was…." Logan states as sighed; things just got a lot weirder for them….
…
"He wants you to perform at a Halloween Ball?"
The four boys were in Roque Records and had just told their producer what had gone down. The four were hoping their producer could help them make some sense of this situation, he knew their manager and thought like him, so maybe, he had an idea, right? But this didn't seem to be the case. Gustavo Roque instantly had a smile on his face, and it was creeping Kendall, Logan, James, and Carlos out, for they rarely ever saw the man smile.
"This is perfect! I'll get you some stage exposure, and we can write a new song!" Gustavo stated as he patted Kendall on the shoulder. "We'll make it a fun, upbeat one!"
Groaning, the four boys watched as their producers started to think of ideas. Kendall sighs, "What would the upbeat song be about?" The blonde wondered as he frowned; he was more upset they didn't get any answers about Mr. Bitters outwardly being nice to them about the situation.
A grin forms on Gustavo's face, "It'll be about partying and dancing. Perfect for Halloween!"
The four sighed and, seeing Gustavo was going into songwriting mode, prepared themselves to be kicked out of the studio. Being kicked out indeed happened. Gustavo claimed he needed alone time to think and write; he dismissed the dogs to Kelly, who had their work on their dance routines for some of their already-written songs. So, when the four were on break from working on their dance routines, Logan walked over to Kelly, who looked up at him and smiled.
"Hey…can I talk to you about something privately?" Logan questioned, hearing the nervousness in his voice.
Kelly must've sensed it too, for they frowned and gave him a worried look but nodded. She turned to Kendall, Carlos and James. "Logan and I will be right back; you three stay here and keep working on those moves…."
With that, the two-step outside of the room, no doubt getting concerned, looks from Kendall, Carlos, and James as the two walk out of the room and to Kelly's office. Once inside Kelly's office, Logan took a moment to look around. The boys were never really inside it, so it was a new area for them when they were. Kelly's office was small but suitable for her style. Halloween decorations were all over the office; only a desk and some shelves were inside it. Kelly had Logan sit down before she sat, and she smiled at him once the two were sitting.
"What would you like to talk about, Logan?" Kelly questions genuinely, making her voice sound soft and caring.
At first, Logan hesitates, and then he says nervously. "I want to ask you about…about something the guys had brought up to me. It hasn't let my mind since they said it, and I didn't know who to go to because I am unsure of how to handle this myself."
Kelly raises an eyebrow at him and says, "Alright, lay it on me. I'm sure we can handle whatever is bothering you together."
That comment helped Logan feel at ease. After another few moments of silence, he finally told Kelly what was on his mind. The young genius told her about their conversation from the start of October and how Kendall, James, and Carlos seemed to think he "played for the other team," as they had put it. Logan even confided in Kelly that he had thought about things complicated and possibly believed his friends into thinking he was gay. Logan only knew the term from the research Logan did after having the conversation with his friends, and it bugged him so much that he had to know more about what they meant and learn all kinds of things. The young boy even told Kelly how he was started looking at guys differently and couldn't help but notice how much more he liked them than girls. Finally, the genius told her he was worried this would change things for the band and his friendship with the guys. Once he was finished, he sighed in relief, and it felt good to get it all off his chest. Logan just hoped he could trust Kelly with this information.
For a moment, there was more silence as Kelly took in everything he told her. Logan tried to read her, but her face was very frozen in thought, and it was hard to see her reactions. Finally, she smiled at him, "Logan, you have been friends with those three forever. I don't think being gay would change anything between you; as for Gustavo and Griffin, I can handle them. You need to be yourself and figure things out. Have you tried going on a date with a guy? What about that girl from the palmwoods you were seeing for a while… what's her name?...Camille?"
Sighing as his shoulders relaxed, Logan says, "It didn't work out between Camille and me. She wanted on and off again, but I didn't. Also no…but I wouldn't mind trying to date a guy and seeing how it goes." Logan finished with a half smile as he pictured his perfect date.
"Alright, there's your answer. There's nothing wrong with exploring. Just be safe and smart, that's all. And if you ever need to talk to me about anything, feel free. I know it's hard with your parents being in Minnesota and all, so don't hesitate to come to me." Kelly smiles as she comes up and hugs Logan gently.
Logan hugs her back gently too. "Thanks, Kelly, this means a lot to me; it does. Just uh… Don't tell Gustavo, Griffin, the guys, or anyone else until I figure things out. I'm sorry to make you keep it secret; I'm just not ready yet."
"Your secret is safe with me!"
Like that, their conversation is finished, and the two hug once more, with Logan thanking Kelly for everything. Exiting the office, the two head back to the dance studio, where they walk into Gustavo, yelling at Kendall once more for who knows what this time. Logan only shakes his head when he sees Kendall smirking to himself about the situation. Once Gustavo and Kendall finished the little yell fest, they finished practice and were dismissed around nine pm that night. It took them a bit to get home, but after settling in, Logan slept well that night, feeling refreshed after getting everything out to someone that day. Now all he had to do, was figure out who he was and what he found attractive in guys. He also had to learn to love himself and figure out how to tell his friends the truth. But it would all happen in due time, and as Logan lay in bed, he thought more about this and heard Kendall's soft snores across from their shared room; he fell asleep an hour later, finally ready for whatever came his way this Halloween…
