Hey everyone, QueenofWords1 here. I can't believe I forgot to post yesterday. The same thing happened with CNZ. But never fear, the chapter is here! Enjoy!
"My goodness, this is the best sandwich I've ever had in my life."
You were scarfing down a delicious sandwich and so glad you ordered two of these. You hated how badly you were acting like such a pig in front of Yakko, but you couldn't help yourself. You were hungry enough to eat a horse.
Yakko just laughs. "I told you they're good."
You nod, sandwich dripping down your chin. You quickly grab a napkin to save your dignity. "They are."
You and Yakko were sitting outside the sandwich shop he had taken you to. You both were aware of the limited time you both had, but thankfully the lines in the shop were little to nothing. Not because it was bad service. Because it was good service. You swore it only took them a few seconds to make all three sandwiches that were ordered. You had been hesitant to try them, but Yakko managed to persuade you.
You take another giant bite. Yakko swallows his own bite and smirks. "Slow down, Wakko."
"Har har." You sneer, mouth filled. You quickly chew and swallow down the food in your mouth. "Wakko would've inhaled both sandwiches by now."
"His record is twelve I think." Yakko says.
"I thought it was one hundred." You say.
Yakko snickers. "Do you remember the one time he ate the wrapper off a subway sandwich?"
You laugh. That had been quite a show. All of you had just come back from a movie outing and went out to buy some sandwiches for dinner. It was quite the show to watch Wakko scarf down a whole foot long sandwich. None of us could even warn him of the wrapper. You were sure Scratchansniff had gone into a fit after hearing that little story, but Wakko claims he was fine.
"Now that was a trick." You say, biting into your sandwich.
Yakko nods and at that moment you both hear a phone ringing. Yakko glances at his phone on the table. So do you. The caller ID said Babe with a picture of Delphine and Yakko together in a selfie. Yakko frowns and dismisses the call.
You swallow. "That's the fifth time she's called."
"I know." Yakko says simply. "I'll talk to her when I'm ready."
You nod and continue eating your sandwich. Delphine had been blowing up his phone the entire time you've both been out for lunch. When she wasn't calling, it was text messages. The entire sandwich shop had been staring at the both of you as the phone blared constantly. Yakko had turned off the notifications for texts after that.
But besides that, the constant texting and calls hadn't stopped you and Yakko from talking. It felt good to talk again. Just like old times.
Yakko's phone starts ringing again. The toon snatches it and with a jab of his thumb, he dismisses the call. He then turns off his phone.
"Little excessive don't you think?" You say.
Yakko shakes his head. "Nah. She knows I'm angry. I don't answer when I'm angry."
You nod and finish off the last bite of your sandwich. Yakko starts wrapping up his empty wrapper and stands up.
"I'm a bit parched." Yakko says, looking at you. "Wanna go grab a coffee or something?"
You collect all your garbage. "Think we have time?"
"If we hurry." Yakko says.
"Sure." You smile. You pack your sandwich, grab your bag and both you and Yakko throw out your trash before heading to the car.
Once inside, Yakko turns on the car and drives off onto the road. "I'm sure there's a Starbucks around here."
"Ooh! We can get one of those frappuccinos!" You squeal.
Yakko tilts his head at you, an amused smile on his face. You turn away, a blush settling on your cheeks.
"Hey," Yakko teases. "I thought you were more of a milkshake person."
You face forward. "I can change it up if I want to!"
"At least cookies are still your favorite dessert, right?" Yakko grins.
You swore your cheeks turned redder. "Yakko, you already bought me lunch."
"And now I will buy you a frappuccino and cookies." Yakko says as he drives the car into the Starbucks drive-through. Up in front there were already a few cars waiting in line.
"I hope this line goes quickly." You say.
"Don't worry," Yakko says. "We'll make it back to school."
You lay back against your seat. Yakko copies you.
"Say," Yakko starts, glancing at you. "Do you remember when we used to go out and buy milkshakes at that old bakery near the neighborhood?"
How could you forget? It was days like those you used to look back on all the time. You nod.
Yakko smiles. "It was almost every weekend we went. We should go again. For old times sake."
"That sounds great!" You smile, but then you recall something. "Oh, but it can't be this weekend."
"How come?" Yakko asks.
"Ah, your sister is sorta dragging me and Wakko to the mall this weekend." You smirk. "And you're chauffeuring us."
Yakko's expression immediately turns to alarm. He slumps in his chair with a dramatic sigh and drapes his arms over his eyes.
"Kill me now." Yakko moans.
You giggle and Yakko sits up straight again. He crosses his arms.
"Can't wait for those rascals to get their own licenses." Yakko mutters. The cars start moving and Yakko drives up ahead. "No way Scratchy will buy all of us new cars, but one can hope."
Yakko stops the car again when the line stops moving.
"We can go for milkshakes another day." You say. "Maybe the weekend after?"
"Yeah, that sounds nice." Yakko smiles.
Riiing!
You and Yakko share a puzzled look and turn to your bag. You open it up and reach inside, pulling out your cell. It read Wakko on the caller ID. Yakko raises an eyebrow.
"Doesn't their lunch end earlier?" Yakko asks.
"Not sure." You answer the phone. "Hello?"
"Hey," You hear Wakko on the other end. He sounded annoyed. "Is Yakko there?"
"Yes-how did you know that?" You ask, eyeing Yakko.
"Delphine is why." Wakko bluntly answers.
"What?" You shout.
"I know. She wouldn't stop calling my cell during class." Wakko says. "I'm in the bathrooms right now, so can you tell Yakko to get his girlfriend to STOP calling me?"
"Wait, she was calling you?" You ask.
Yakko looks concerned. "What's going on?"
You gesture to him to give you a minute. You go back to the phone.
"Yes! She wouldn't stop! I don't even know how she has my number!" Wakko rants. "She kept texting me too. Something about convincing Yakko to come back to the school. Is he ditching or something? Did they get into another fight?"
"Well-...another?" You say.
You hear Wakko hiss. "I mean-ah shoot. Doesn't matter. Look, just tell him I've tried texting him and if he can answer me back. I'm sorry to do this to you, but if I don't get back to class-"
"Wakko, it's fine." You say. "Go to class!"
"Thanks." Wakko says relieved. "Bye!"
The phone beeps. He hung up.
You look at Yakko. "Wakko just told me Delphine has been calling him…"
"What?" Yakko shouts. A look of anger flashes over his face. He starts making a bunch of unintelligible noises, clutching the car wheel. You were sure he had begun muttering some swears.
"Bitch!" Yakko shouts, banging his head against the wheel.
You stare at him, concerned, but as quick as he had started that, he sits up and sighs.
"I-I'm sorry." Yakko mutters. His brow furrows. "I can't believe she did that. I might have to call her."
You're silent. It made your heart hurt just seeing Yakko so frustrated. You hesitate, but then place a hand on his shoulder. Yakko jumps slightly, but then looks at you. You give him an uneasy smile. You would've offered a real smile, but you weren't feeling too hot yourself. This was all your fault…
"Don't be so hard on yourself." You say. "She's just acting bat crazy, she'll have to calm down eventually. Right?"
You wished you could say more, but you honestly didn't know Delphine that well. Other than she's a cruel heartless bitch who purposely invited you to lunch only to ditch you, which totally matches her trashy personality. But besides that, you didn't know what she was like. You pretty much made it your goal to never have to interact with her.
Suddenly, Yakko's hand lands on yours. He lets out a heavy sigh. "I know you're trying to cheer me up, but I know Delphine and she's gonna keep at it."
You deflate and your hand clenched into a fist. It wasn't fair for Yakko to have to endure this.
Yakko turns his head to you. You can tell he looks tired. "Can I be completely honest with you?"
You nod. Yakko faces forward.
"I don't want to throw so much on you, but me and Delphine…we've been having problems." Yakko admits.
You swallow. You remember the argument they had earlier.
"Yakko, you're causing such a scene!"
"I don't care! You said you would stop this sort of shit!"
They had argued before. You could tell.
"That wasn't our first argument." Yakko continues, confirming your suspicions. "We've been having lots of arguments, actually. When it's not something small, it's something like this. I can never get her to talk about our problems. She always wants to brush them aside."
"That's awful." You say.
Yakko nods. You notice something flickering on Yakko's face. Uneasiness maybe? He drags a hand down his face.
"She can be so difficult sometimes." Yakko groans. He grips the wheel. "I just wish she would quit acting to see things my way. I'm tired of her pretending like we don't have problems."
You caress Yakko's shoulder as he speaks. You weren't even embarrassed or flustered this time. You just wanted him to feel okay. He doesn't stop you.
Yakko chuckles bitterly. He glances at you. "It might be hard to believe, but…well, I plan on breaking up with her."
You freeze. Your mind slowly processes what he's saying. They're…they're breaking up? He's ending things with her? No more Delphine?
But Yakko keeps talking. "This is actually going to be the third time I've broken up with her."
"Wait what?" You say before you can stop yourself.
"Yeah, I know." Yakko continues. "Sounds unbelievable, but it is. I've tried breaking up with her in the past. Somehow I still end up with her."
Your shock turns to concern. How can Yakko stand this?
"How can you stand it?" You found yourself saying. You feel anger rise inside you. Yakko didn't deserve this type of treatment. Delphine's such a bitch!
Yakko's nose wrinkles. "I don't really. If I'm being honest, I don't like her like I used to. Before there was something, but now…"
He trails off.
You bite the inside of your cheek and clutch his shoulder. Yakko pats your hand.
"It's not the same." Yakko says, bitterly. "She's changed a lot. I remember she used to be a lot cooler, more laid back with me. We could get along just fine."
The cars ahead start moving and Yakko drives the car forward. You've almost reached the damn speaker box. But that wasn't your focus right now.
"But as we got older I noticed her becoming…how do I say this correctly?" Yakko scratches his chin. "She's gotten a little possessive."
"Possessive?" You say.
"Mhm." Yakko stops the car again. He turns to you. "She's turned into a real diva when it comes to hanging out with other people. It started small, just her texting me for updates on what I was doing. Next thing I know, she's making me cancel plans to hang out with her."
You frown. "That's not right."
"That's what I tried telling her." Yakko explains. "I could feel her clinging onto me and I didn't like it. We weren't dating anymore for the fun of it, it was so she could just keep tabs on me. I was getting sick of it!"
"So," You begin slowly. "How come the breakups didn't work?"
Yakko's lips go into a thin line. "We would fight. She'd get all emotional and it always wore me down to see her like that. I'd feel guilty and we just didn't break up."
Yakko frowns. "But right afterwards she acts like we hadn't argued and nothing gets resolved." He grinds his teeth. "And now she just chooses to act like such a bitch in front of anyone she doesn't like. It pisses me off."
You squeeze his shoulder. "I'm really sorry, Yakko. You don't deserve to be going through this."
"I just don't know what to do." Yakko continues, looking frustrated. "Even if I break up with her, it might just get worse."
Yakko leans back in his seat. You could feel your heart aching just at the sight of him like this. You wished you could make everything right. Could there be any way to do that?
"I wish I could help." You say, looking at the side. "You're my friend…it hurts to see you like this. If I could, I would do anything to help."
Yakko puts his head in his hand. He glances at you. You spy a small smile on his lips. "Can you try trading places with Delphine for a bit? Might make the breakup work for once."
You smile. "Sure, I'll be Delphine. How much of a bitch do I need to act like first, I want to make sure I get the impression right."
Yakko suddenly laughs. He grins. "Funny, but I don't think you can out bitch her."
You smirk. "Sounds like a challenge."
Yakko chuckles. He smiles at you. "You really are a great friend."
You blush, but then grin. "That can't be!" You put on your most snobbish look and pull back your hair, sniffing the air. "I'm Delphine, the worst girlfriend in the world! Friends? What are friends? I despise friends! Now kiss me darling!"
Yakko laughs. You can't keep up the act any longer and laugh with him. Yakko then puts on a look of disgust.
"Oh Delphine!" Yakko dramatically swoons. "I wish, but can not! For we must break up!"
You gasp. You drape an arm over your eyes and look away. "Yakko, it can not be true!" You bury your head in your hands and start fake sobbing. "We were meant to be!"
Yakko gasps. He begins to choke. "Delphine-your words! They burn! Oh, woe is me! Where art thou, my friend, to save me from the clutches of this woman?"
You then fix your hair again and grab Yakko's hand. "Fear not, Yakko! It is me! Your best friend!"
"You're here!" Yakko cries dramatically. He grabs a hold of your shoulders and shakes you. "Save me from the clutches of the horrific Delphine!"
You grab his arms. "How does milkshakes and cookies sound?"
"Sounds good to me!" Yakko smiles.
You let him go and pull your hair back. You raise a hand to your chest. "Nooo! Friendship! My. One. Weakness!"
You fall back, acting dead with your tongue flopping out. Yakko laughs.
"I thought we were trying to get rid of her, not kill her." Yakko laughs.
You break the dead act. "Felt more realistic."
"Pff." Yakko snickers.
You smile until you notice Yakko's smile fading back into a frown.
"Now if only that could work in real life." Yakko says, sighing. "But we can't act our way into this."
You lean back in your seat, feeling down once again. Suddenly, Yakko sits up, his ears perking straight up. A giant grin settles on his face, making you confused.
"Or can we?" Yakko says mischievously.
You blink. "Yakko?"
Yakko suddenly grabs you by the shoulders. He's grinning so wide, it's kinda alarming.
"You're my best friend, right?" Yakko asks, still grinning.
You nod, not sure where this was going. "Yeah-"
"And you'd do anything to help me out, right?" Yakko says this next part with some urgency. You bob her head up and down. He says your name.
"...I need to ask you a favor." Yakko says.
"Favor?" You question. Okay, where is he going with this? "What sort of favor?"
"It's gonna sound crazy, and I might just be a little out of my mind for thinking this," Yakko explains. He looks you in the eye.
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
The world starts slowing down for you. Your eyes go wide. Did he just say what you think he just said? Your heart starts beating in your ribcage, going as fast as lightning. This can't be happening-no wait what were you saying? This was happening!
Your mouth opens, but no words come out. Immediately, your face flourishes red. You've waited for those words for the longest. You've fantasized for him to say those words for the longest. And now he had said them.
"I-"
HONK!
You and Yakko jump. Yakko looks back towards the car and then forward, you copy him.
The line had moved forward. Your car was next to go up to the speaker box. Yakko lets you go.
"Shit, shit!" Yakko exclaims, quickly moving the car forward.
HONK!
"We're moving!" Yakko shouts with a scowl. He then notices you just staring at him and gives a nervous smile. "Just give me one minute-"
"You want me to be your what?" You shriek.
"Hi, welcome to Starbucks!" A voice springs from the speaker box. "What can I get for you?"
"Yes, um." Yakko turns to the speaker box. "Can I get a large coffee, two creams, two sugars and a-"
Yakko stops and looks at you, smiling uneasily. "What kind of frappuccino do you want?"
"...vanilla." You manage to say.
"And a large vanilla frappuccino with two chocolate chip cookies." Yakko finishes saying to the speaker.
"Will that be all?" The speaker asks.
"Yes." Yakko says.
"Your total is $11.30." The speaker says.
"Thank you." Yakko says and drives up ahead.
"Yakko!" You exclaim the minute the car is away from the speaker box. "The minute is over!"
"Sorry, sorry." Yakko apologizes as he stops the car once more.
You weren't looking at Yakko when he glanced over at you. You were trying to hide your beet red face. Why were you this nervous? You shouldn't be nervous! You should be thrilled! Right? This is what you've wanted for the longest time! But my god…you two just became friends! How fast does he expect things to move? And he hasn't dumped Delphine!
Your ears warms up. Oh my god, you've become the side chick!
"Please don't be angry." You hear Yakko say nervously. He must be misinterpreting your red face. "You're my friend. I've known you longer. I don't think I could've asked anyone else for this to work. It just makes sense!"
You slowly turn towards him.
"In what world?" You shriek.
Yakko nervously laughs. "Believe me, I know this is a bit much-"
"A bit?" You shriek.
"Please, stop shrieking." Yakko begs, clasping his hands together. "And listen to me."
You take in a deep breath and try to calm down. But your mind was buzzing like crazy. You still couldn't get over what he had just asked you. Your stomach was in a knot and you weren't sure to throw up or pinch yourself.
"It's the perfect plan. We can trick Delphine!"
You snap your head to Yakko. His smile was back and was looking at you with anticipation. You stared at the toon.
"Yakko, you've lost me." You admit.
"Here's the plan." Yakko begins. "You and me, we act like we're together. So when I break off things with Delphine, I'll tell her you and I are together. She'll be so pissed off at me, she'll have to leave me alone!"
You gape at Yakko. He takes notice of your silence.
"I'm begging you, I need to do this." Yakko pleads. "I don't think I can stand another day being with her."
Yakko starts counting off his fingers. "I've tried subtle hints, I've tried talking with her, I've even argued with her! Hell, I even broke up with her! Twice! She doesn't quit!"
He grabs you by the shoulders. The desperation in his eyes is obvious. "I swear, I'm not trying to pressure you into anything. If you don't want to do it, we won't. I know I'm asking a lot…I just don't know what to do."
You stay silent, your head buzzing. An act. This was to get rid of Delphine. He wanted you to be with him so she'll quit running after him. It was an insane plan that could go really wrong, but what if…
"Okay." You blurt. "I'll do it."
I'm insane.
"You will?" Yakko exclaims with joy.
But I like him.
"Yes, I will." You put on a smile.
I'd do anything for him.
Yakko breaks out into a smile. "You are a lifesaver!"
Yakko hugs you and you freeze for a second, but slowly hug him back. You take in the moment, allowing your brain to process what you've done.
He needs me. You convince yourself.
"You're the bestest friend a guy could've asked for." Yakko says.
And I need him.
Yakko lets you go and sits straight in his seat. His smile never falters. He glances at you.
"I promise, this will only be temporary." Yakko assures. "Once Delphine is off my case, we go back to how things were."
You smiled back, but your heart was aching. "Sounds like a plan."
HONK!
Yakko glares at the back of the car. "Geeze, what a mood killer."
You face forward. Once again, you were both next…and holding up the line. You tap Yakko on the shoulder and point forward. He looks.
"Oops." Yakko sheepishly smiles and starts the car again. "Ah, on second thought that dude has the right idea."
You giggle. Yakko drives up to the Starbucks window where he pays for the drinks. As Yakko waits for the line to move, you lay back in your seat.
Had you really just said yes to being Yakko's girlfriend? An act or not, it made you feel on edge. You were trying to decipher the emotions inside you. As much as the idea of being his girlfriend felt amazing, the realistic part of your mind reminded you it was nothing but an act. But right away, you were trying to wrap your head around the idea. Would there be hand touching? Dating?
You gulped. Kissing?
You mentally shook yourself. Don't get ahead of yourself! Yakko said it himself. This was only temporary. Maybe Delphine would be so mad she decides she wants nothing with Yakko. It will be over in a day. Then you two could go back to normal things.
Normal things. You think. Suddenly your heart feels a thousand times lighter. That's right. Act or not, you're both still friends. Normal things meant hang outs, laughing at each other's jokes, and doing normal friend things. Just like before. Everything is back to normal. You have Yakko. And soon enough, once he dumps Delphine, you'll have him back all over again.
"We're moving again." Yakko says, breaking the silence.
"Huh?" You notice Yakko moving the car up to the window where a worker was waiting with the order. "Oh!"
Yakko stops the car before the window and grabs the two drinks. He hands you your frappuccino.
"Your drink, milady." Yakko grins.
You couldn't help but blush. You take the drink, but you find yourself smiling. "Thank you, kind sir."
Yakko smiles and grabs the cookies next. He hands them to you. "And don't forget the sweets!"
You take them. "You didn't have to do that, you know."
"I know." Yakko says. "But I did."
You sip the frappuccino. Vanilla and coffee hit your taste buds and you smile through the straw. Yakko places his coffee in the drink holder and drives out of the Starbucks drive-through. He checks the time on the car radio.
"Told you we'd have time." Yakko says, pointing at the clock. "Now, as much as I hate to say it, back to the school."
You deflate, pouting. "Aw."
"Don't worry, just a few more hours and we'll be scot free." Yakko grins. "Remember, I'm driving you back home today."
"Yakko, you're too much!" You chuckle.
Yakko smirks. "Anything for my girlfriend."
You blush and hide behind a cookie. "Oh shut up."
Yakko starts laughing and you join him. Although you weren't sure of what this plan might have in store for the future, you were sure of one thing.
He's mine again.
