Jane's blood ran cold as she recognized that name from a list of potential suspects. She did a quick glance around what she assumed was a basement, trying to calculate the likelihood of a successful escape. Hoyt, who had been watching her, smiled and laughed evilly.

"Don't even think about it Jane."

Before Jane could answer, a whimper came from the dark. Jane strained to see in the darkness and was just barely able to make out the crumpled form of a body.

"Who is that?" Jane tried to raise herself up, but Hoyt's booted foot pushed her back down. Undaunted, Jane tried to sit up again, which earned her a sharp kick in the chest, knocking the wind out of her. As she struggled to catch her breath, Hoyt began to unzip his pants. That stopped Jane and she could only watch as Hoyt disappeared into the darkness of the basement.

Jane had just realized her left ankle was chained to the floor when she heard the blood curdling scream coming from the body in the dark. She shivered as she heard the woman begging Hoyt to stop. To try and ignore what was going on near her, she began singing 99 bottles of beer to herself. Eventually she realized the screaming had stopped and she turned to look in the direction of the screams. Seemingly out of nowhere, she was hit on the side of the head, knocking her unconscious.

Maura and Angela were now both officially worried, albeit for different reasons. Angela was afraid Jane had been hurt or in an accident and Maura was afraid Jane had changed her mind about their relationship. As the minutes continued to tick by, both women grew increasingly concerned. First Angela and then Maura tried calling Jane on her cell phone with no luck.

As they neared Jane being late by an hour, Maura looked to Angela for some guidance. "Do you think I...we, should call Korsak?"

"Yes." Angela was wringing her hands as Maura called.

"Det. Korsak? Hi. Are you by any chance with Jane?" She listened as he told her about his last conversation with Jane and that they had decided to follow-up on her latest tip in the morning. Korsak listened as Maura told him about Jane being an hour late for dinner with her and Angela. Korsak agreed something was up with Jane and asked Maura meet him back at BPD.

As she hung-up, Angela asked her what Korsak thought, and became officially worried as Maura told her. "Maura, call Frankie too, please. I'm going home, one of you call me as soon as you know anything. Anything, Maura."

Maura was nodding as she got up to leave and then remembered Jane's admonishment to not go anywhere alone. "Angela, can I give you a ride home?"

"Why?"

"Jane cautioned me to be careful while working on this case. I just..." She shrugged.

"I'll call Frankie to come get me and then send him to BPD, ok?"

Maura nodded and allowed Angela to hug her before she left the restaurant, en route back to BPD. Once in her car, after checking behind the driver's seat, she used her cell phone to dial Korsak back, knowing she could speak more freely now that she was alone.

"Det. Korsak, I think it is safe to say Jane is in trouble. This was an important dinner she missed and she would not have missed this."

Korsak listened to Maura and began to worry. He hung up and went to Jane's desk, digging through her files and notes, trying to figure out what Jane might have figured out. He was knee deep in her files when Maura arrived. He noted that she looked just this side of terrified.

"Dr. Isles, we'll find her." Maura nodded and asked what she could do to help.

They were just dividing up the files when Frankie came in, asking questions, and offering any help he could. He pulled the security tapes from the garage where Jane had parked and went to BRIC to watch the tape. Maura was going back over what little forensics they had and Korsak was at the white board, making lists of items from each case.

Frankie came rushing back into the squad room, yelling that he had found something. Korsak and Maura rushed into BRIC and watched the video of Jane's car leaving the parking garage.

"So she was alone when she left."

Frankie held his hand up. "Hang on, I got footage from the bank two blocks away. Jane's car, but she's not driving." He played the next clip. "I don't know who this guy is, but that's Jane's car and he's driving it."

"Can we blow that up and does her unmarked have that transporter thing they are testing out?"

Frankie corrected him, "Transponder and yes. Not sure how accurate it is though. I'll check with dispatch."

Korsak was looking at a grainy black and white image of a man. "Damn!" Korsak put his glasses on and went back to Jane's files.

"What is it, Det. Korsak?"

"This is the guy Jane thought might be involved. Washed out of medical school for abusing a corpse." He looked at Maura, fear etched on his face. Before he could anything else, Frankie came running in.

"Here's the address where Jane's car is currently sitting. How do you wanna handle this?"

"I'm on my way, send three cars, lights off." He was almost out the door when Maura joined him. "Dr. Isles, you need to stay here, Frankie, get your parents and wait to hear from me." He didn't need to clarify what he meant. Frankie knew they would either see his sister in the hospital or the morgue.

"Det. Korsak, it's likely Jane is going to need medical help. I'll go with you and arrange for an ambulance to be on stand-by." He started to protest again, but the look Maura gave him, told him that would be useless.

"Let's go."

Jane felt something nudging her head as she slowly awoke. As her vision began to come into focus, she saw Charles Hoyt standing over her with bloody hands. She squinted and felt sick as she realized he was holding an organ. A human body part. Turning her head she threw-up, swallowing some as she couldn't get onto her side.

"Easy Jane. I'd hate for you to die before I can inflict the most damage on you."

Jane knew she was in serious trouble and scrambled to find a way to keep him talking.

"Who was that woman? What did you do to her?"

"Just a woman who crossed me." He picked up a rag and began wiping his hands. "I freed her from the burden of having children. After we made love." He knelt beside Jane. "And I am going to do the same to you." He stood and picked up his scalpel, removing his shirt before lowering himself on top of Jane.

Through gritted teeth she barked, "Get. Off. Of. Me."

Taunting her he laughed and said, "Jane, Jane, Jane, our coupling will be the sweetest of things." He bent and tried to kiss her. Jane, mustering all the strength she could from the dirty floor of a dingy basement, with one leg chained to the floor, spat in his face, catching him in the eye.

Angered, Hoyt backhanded her and took the scalpel, stabbing her through the hand, causing Jane to scream out in pain. Delighted at her pain, he grabbed another scalpel and did the same to her right hand. Jane was screaming in agony as he tried to kiss her. He reached down between them and tried to unzip his pants. As he was doing that, he whispered into Jane's ear, "We can get your girlfriend to join us, if you like. Tell me Jane, how does she taste? How does she smell...down there?"

Hoyt was now straddling her, his bulge resting against her center. "Is she submissive? Has she always been a dyke or did she just go dyke for you?" He slid both hands up in under her shirt and grabbed her breasts, roughly. "Do you touch her this way? Or does she touch you this way?" He pulled his hands out from under her shirt, and still straddling her, he added, "I think you'll be over there and the good doctor will be right here for my next kill."

Through her pain, Jane screamed, "You leave her alone! You touch a hair on her head and so help me, I will kill you!"

Hoyt laughed at her. "You're going to be dead Jane. After I make you watch me make love to her."

Jane's blood ran cold. "Whatever you want, I'll get it. If it's me you want, I'll go along with it. Just don't hurt her."

He stretched back out on top of her and licked the side of her neck. He eventually bit into her neck, drawing a smaller scream from her. He'd just gotten his hand down into her pants when the door to the basement was thrown open and Jane could make out the figure of Vince Korsak. Hoyt turned to see who was at the top of the stairs and before he could do anything, Korsak fired two shots, both of which hit him. One in the shoulder and one in his hip, causing Hoyt to topple over, screaming.

Korsak hurried down the stairs, followed by several officers, two EMT's and Maura Isles. Korsak was about to pull the scalpel blades out of Jane's hands, when Maura stopped him.

"Let me. You can't just pull them out." Maura Isles looked down into the eyes of the person she loved beyond anyone or thing else, and her heart broke. Jane's face was tear stained, her hands were bloody, her face bruised, and her pants were torn at the button.

Jane tried to sit up, but Maura and the chain on her left leg stopped her. "Maura?" Maura leaned down, thinking Jane may need to tell her something private. "There's a woman over there somewhere."

Maura saw an EMT pulling the cover over the woman and shaking his head. "The EMT is with her Jane. I'm focused on you."

"My leg."

Maura alerted an officer who went to get a pair of bolt cutters. "Jane, I think you have at the very least a concussion, did...did anything else happen?"

Jane shook her head. "Korsak shot him before he could...you know."

Maura released a breath she didn't know she was holding.

As she was about to touch Jane's face, the officer returned with the bolt cutters and began working on freeing Jane's leg. Within minutes her leg was free and they were transferring her to a stretcher. Maura walked next to her and got into the ambulance to ride with her to the hospital.

"Maura, let Frankie know, ok?" Jane began to cough and then moan. "Oh that hurts."

Maura glanced at Jane's vitals and told the EMT to cut her shirt off. She saw the rapidly bruising boot print on Jane's chest and got her stethoscope out to listen to Jane breathe.

"Elevate her and radio ahead to let them know in addition to everything else, she may have a pleural effusion."

Jane had started coughing as they arrived at the hospital, and her vitals had become erratic. Maura was running beside Jane's stretcher as she passed Korsak. "Jane wants Frankie updated. I'll come out as soon as I can to update you."
