Robin-Hood: The Female Thief Chapter 7
Friar Tuck is exactly where Robin thinks he'd be. It's where he always was even after all the years that have passed since she last saw him.
At the church taking confession as usual.
How fortunate for Robin that this level of privacy is what she requires in order to properly speak to him away from prying eyes.
Friar Tuck is in the middle of a personal prayer when Robin interrupts him in his cubicle.
Assuming that she's simply another one of the everyday visitors that come to him to relieve their souls of their daily burdens, Friar Tuck said "What would you confess, my son."
Smiling at the mention he believes her to be a boy, removing her hood, Robin said "Tuck, where is my father? Where is Marian?"
Spinning around towards her in shock, eyes wide, Friar Tuck said "Robin? Robin, you're not dead?"
Confused at the accusation, Robin said "No, not for want of trying."
"But your name was read out from the list of fallen soldiers," said Friar Tuck, amazed at the fact she's even alive.
"What," gasped Robin.
"Two years ago," explained Friar Tuck. "We were told you were dead. Your father and Marian had a memorial for you. It was lovely. I wrote you a very moving eulogy. It's a pity you missed it. Well, I'm thrilled you missed it, 'cause it would have been completely inappropriate, given you are not dead."
"Tuck," said Robin, getting him to be quite and draw his attention back to her.
"Yes," said Friar Tuck.
"Who read my name from the list of fallen soldiers," demands Robin, all seriousness taking over.
Averting his eyes from hers, Friar Tuck said "The Sheriff, but, Robin-."
"Where is my father," said Robin, tears beginning to build in the corners of her eyes at his evasiveness.
Quietly, his voice taking on a grim ton, trying to be as sensitive about this as possible, Friar Tuck said "Look, things have taken rather a turn since you've been gone, Robin. Your father did what he did to protect you, but his decision had consequences. The Sheriff announcing your demise was the price. After the memorial your father returned to the Manor and collapsed. Marian and I did what we could for him, but…he died that same day. I'm sorry."
Robin gasps devastation and grief, tears pouring down her face as he bends over in anguish.
"Where…," she said, covering her mouth to hold in her sobs, "where is my father buried?"
"His grave is on the estate. Right beside your mothers under their favorite tree," informs Friar Tuck.
Robin tries to gather herself together.
Giving her a moment to process all this properly, Friar Tuck continued "Robin, there's more. The Sheriff seized Loxley Manor as collateral for his war tax and threw Marian out. And it's not just her. He's crushing us all with his war effort. Tolls, collections. Robin, he's driven most of the commoners out of Nottingham proper."
"To where," asked Robin.
"To the mines," informed Friar Tuck.
Rubbing the tears off her face, Robin said "Is Marian there now?"
"Yes, but Robin, Marians-," said Friar Tuck.
Robin doesn't give him a chance to finish. She bolts out of the confession cubicle, unable to stand it anymore.
Instead of heading to the mines to find Marian, Robin runs back to Loxley Manor.
She finds her father's grave right where Friar Tuck said it would be.
Seeing it reality hits her and once more it is too much to bear. Her beloved father is dead, not patiently waiting for her return like he promised her he would be. She'd never hear his laugh, his voice, or feel his touch again.
Robin falls to her nears, tears starting anew as she gazes at his gravestone.
"This is the Sheriffs way of revenge for spurning him," whispered Robin, angrily, digging her fingers into the dirt over her father's grave. "I promise you, Father. This will not go unpunished. I will have revenge and see the Sheriff brought down for what he's done to you, this city, and all the people of Nottingham. I swear it!"
Authors Note:
By the way whose been watching House of the Dragon? I am so in love with Prince Daemon. He is a dream. Matt Smith was the perfect person to play that character. Similar to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool no one could've done it better.
Apologies for the long wait everybody!
I cannot begin to describe how apologetic I am for taking so heinously long to get back on track. It's difficult when you have so many ideas flying around to start on one and then another just pops out in your head. From this day forward that's all gonna change.
I hope you all like this one! I certainly did while writing it for your vast enjoyment! ;D
