Hi, so here is another chapter and we are back to Emmett's point of view. Thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement in keeping this story going, it truly does mean the world to me.
Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine.
Please Read and Review.
And this one again takes a stab at the film Eclipse because we never got to see any kind of Rosalie fighting-and we never got to really see it in Breaking Dawn Part 2 either. Seriously we saw more of the trees than we did of Rosalie in that scene.
Next chapter will be Rosalie's point of view but we are moving slowly through the pregnancy, I think we will reach halfway pretty soon. Certainly some of the stuff in Jacob's point of view of the books will not be covered here so that will be skipped.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Chapter 9-Hussle And Motivate.
Jacob returns but he is not alone, the treaty is null and void. Emmett and Esme share a moment (back to Emmett's point of view for this chapter).
"It's easier to build strong children than to repair broken men" Frederick Douglass
"They've come for Bella" Edward said into the shivering silence.
Emmett's initial knee jerk reaction was to roll his eyes because of course they had.
There was no way that the wolves over the pond (so to speak) were going to let something so unknown into their atmosphere. Their philosophy—hell their very creation was all about the protection of their tribe so why the hell would they just wait and see what would happen with Bella and the vampire pregnancy from hell? Even Emmett could understand that—if the Volturi found out before Bella had chance to deliver…well…it didn't bare thinking about. He could barely control his emotions from the last time.
Edward shot him a side eye that he ignored.
His second thought God help him was finally.
This was something that Emmett could do. This was a fight with wolves this was something that he was good at.
They knew the wolves now, knew their strategies, knew that while Alice was blind with them Jasper wasn't. Granted it would be hard but Emmett was confident they could win it. If the stupid lead dog wanted to send his minions into a war he couldn't win then every loss was on his conscious and not on theirs (though you'd have hard work of convincing Carlisle of that fact and Esme too) but this was something that Emmett could do. He could fight, hell sometimes it was like he was just there for the added muscle and he could fight. He could do it and he could do it well.
And it would be something. He caught Jasper's eye and knew he felt the same thing. Edward was burning, Bella was dying, their wives were on opposing sides and likely never to be on the same one again, Carlisle and Esme were silent shadows watching and waiting for the moment where their family would be torn apart and this was something that they could do to prevent that. Something that would stop making them feel helpless, crawling out of their own skin. Sometimes Emmett felt like it was dying all over again.
Edward huffed and shot him another annoyed look.
"Jacob's come to warn us" he said finally. "He's…he's now the Alpha"
Emmett caught Jasper's eye and then Jasper spoke for them both.
"And for those of us not fluent in werewolf that would mean?"
"That would mean he's now in charge. Two packs. Two Alpha's. One meant to destroy us and one meant to help"
"And how many in the second pack?" Emmett asked quietly.
Edward sighed.
"Two"
"Oh good" Jasper said with an eye roll. "I just love those fucking odds"
"Jasper language please"
Oh good Carlisle was here.
"Emmett, Rosalie is getting rather…nervous would you please go back inside and put her mind at rest before she takes Bella and tries to do something…stupid"
That was code for Rosalie was climbing up the walls. Emmett knew his wife and he knew her well. The second she'd have gotten wind that the wolves were back she'd have been on high alert. He nodded at his father and though he was loath to leave the fight that was either developing or being planned he turned and went back into the dimly lit house.
Rosalie was standing in front of a sleeping Bella her face morphed into something Emmett would call beautifully ugly. It was beautiful because there was never a moment where Rosalie was not beautiful and ugly because she was geared for a fight and that was ugly to him. Rosalie shouldn't be geared for a fight to the death—not while he was around at any rate. He loved her. He was supposed to protect her. And now there was no guarantee that she would make it through the night. Emmett knew his wife, come hell of high water she was not leaving Bella's side which meant if the wolves attacked then she was going to be there, one of the prime targets.
He was ashamed suddenly that he had not watched Rosalie fight with the werewolves before. When they had been fighting the newborns she had gone and done her thing and he had gone and done his and he had known that she was alright simply because he knew he would have known if she was anything else. He knew Rosalie like he himself, in fact he knew her better if he was being honest with himself and if she was in trouble he would have known.
But because of that he had no idea how good of a fighters she was. He knew Jasper had considered her 'alright' (which was admittedly high praise where Jasper was concerned) but he didn't know how good she was. He had never looked during the training because he had known that seeing Jasper try to attack his wife with deadly purpose would have set him off.
And now they were facing a werewolf pack coming at them with them openly acknowledging his wife as one of the prime targets and he had no idea if his soulmate could actually fight them off.
Great.
Well, Emmett thought taking her hand and staring at her and trying to communicate all these thoughts to her and more, if they were going to get his wife they were damn well going to have to get through him first.
And he could take on wolves.
And he would win.
Rosalie watched him for a heartbeat more and then a small smile graced her lips.
"I know" was all she said and it was proof that she was the smarter one of the two of them (as if that was in doubt).
The door opened and Bella shuffled a little in her sleep her hand resting on that enlarged bump and Emmett whirled around about to drop into a crouch (though he knew he would hear an approaching attack twenty miles off) only to see that it was Esme. Alice had not even bothered to come downstairs to see what was going on.
Emmett looked at her and saw the sadness etched into every line in her face.
"Jacob is doing a perimeter check with Carlisle and Jasper" she said softly. Edward who had followed her in went right back to sitting on the floor his eyes never leaving his wife looking as if he wanted to touch but not. Emmett wasn't sure if it was because he knew the touch would be unwelcome or welcomed. He wasn't sure if touching Bella would make that thing move inside of her. He didn't know…he didn't want to know.
God this whole thing made venom pool in his mouth with the urge to kill.
Also with the urge to feed. The burning had gotten steadily worse in time. How Rosalie was coping with such close proximity to a human he didn't know but she was.
Then again, she was always the better person out of the two of them. Even when she had gotten those…animals…that had hurt her she still not given into her instincts.
Christ Emmett loved his wife.
"What's happened?"
"Two packs" Edward said hoarsely. With great patience Emmett did not stamp his foot.
"We know that" he said trying to keep the impatience out of his voice. "But what does that mean exactly?"
"Jacob is the grandson of the alpha. The original one the last time we were here" Edward said in that dead tone as if he was giving a history lecture by rote.
"I thought it was that one who doesn't like us—" Rosalie began but Edward cut across her his eyes still on his sleeping and pregnant wife.
"It is but only because Jacob let him stay alpha. He was the first turned but when Jacob turned the mantle went to him automatically. Jacob gave it back to Sam. But tonight when they decided to annihilate us all for their protection he snapped and became alpha. Seth Clearwater followed. I don't know if more will follow either but…" he gave a little shrug.
"Carlisle's out there now trying to convince him not to slaughter his best friend. Or Seth's sister"
"Nice to know what their planning" Rosalie muttered shaking her blonde hair over her shoulder.
Edward shot her a dark look that had Emmett coughing once. At once the dark eyes shot to him.
"Not tonight Edward" Emmett said quietly. "Just…we need to be together tonight. They know the element of surprise is gone, they also know that Jacob is here. They are panicking and probably furious and that makes people do stupid things. So just…just not tonight"
Weather it was his words or the bone weariness that seemed to be Edward's natural state nowadays Emmett wasn't sure. But what he did know was that his brother listened.
And that was enough.
At least for now.
Bella groaned and at once they all watched her. She was waking up and suddenly Emmett had the urge too…well…it was better left unsaid and unthought but it was not a good urge let's say that.
"I need to get out of this room" he said once and with a kiss to Rose's blonde hair he was gone stalking from the room in three strides.
It wasn't quite running. But it was enough.
He didn't expect anyone to follow him.
But then again, with Esme you left expectations at the door.
"Emmett?"
He was in the kitchen bent over the sink. If he was human he knew he would be throwing up but instead he was staring at the white porcelain as if it held the answers to the universe. His hands were gripping tight onto the marble that Esme had sourced from God knows where.
"Emmett please don't grip the sink that tightly, that marble cost an arm and a leg and I'm not sure how much of it is left"
With a sigh he let go. He had not done much damage but dust came off in his hand when he let go.
Make of that what you will.
"Sorry" he said finally.
"It's alright son"
Dammit.
"No it's not" he said turning to her. She had closed the kitchen door but there was no privacy in this house so what was the point of that?
"No" Esme said finally. "No it's not."
She opened the fridge and sighed.
"I suppose we'll have to get some more human food"
"Why? Bella's not eating anything?"
"No but the wolves will need to eat something. I know they can eat…naturally but they are growing boys and—"
Emmett laughed. He couldn't help himself. It was so like Esme to play the Mom in this scenario. The world might be ending but here she was cooking to feed people who would happily set her on fire and dance around the ashes.
"Mom" he said when the laughing subsided. "Don't you think we've got more important things to worry about? Like seeing the sunrise?"
"Oh I'm not worried about an attack" Esme said waving her hand as if it was a fly she was batting away and not the fight of her life. "I don't think they will attack us tonight. You don't need to be Jasper to know that they've lost the element of surprise. It would be a stupid general who took his men into a battle that he knew he couldn't win and I never took Sam Uley for a stupid man. And I certainly never took Billy Black for one either"
There was nothing Emmett could say to that.
He leaned against the sink and cracked his neck from side to side.
"Son…are you alright?"
"Are you?"
"No" Esme answered honestly. "I know you…I know you wonder why I am backing this"
"Not really" Emmett said with a shrug. "I kinda thought it was…" he trailed off because he had been about to say it was obvious because of the human son she had lost and nothing pissed Carlisle off more than throwing that dead boy around in a conversation.
Esme smiled and her eyes were full of love.
"Yes" she said understanding what he had been about to say. "Yes it was about that but…but I know that you have silenced your opinions for Rosalie"
"It's not that" Emmett said quietly. "I would have asked Bella what she wanted regardless. Might not have agreed with it but I don't want to erase a woman's right to choose simply because a man disagrees"
This time it was Esme's turn to laugh.
"Son you are a rare and precious gem in this world you know that?"
"When I next break something I'll remind you of that statement"
Esme smiled again and then she moved forwards and then opened her arms and Emmett went into them letting her hug him.
Hugs from Esme were the best. There was no other way to describe it.
He had no real memory of his human mother. He suspected that there might have been hugs from her over time. Warm hugs. Loving hugs even but he couldn't remember them. He couldn't remember a face or a voice either. Just an abstract memory, like he was trying to paint a picture through murky glass.
With Esme it had been easy. Far easier he suspected than any of the others. Edward had been there since the beginning and his memory of his mother was perfectly preserved. Jasper was still cautious, Alice had no memory, Rosalie…well…what Rosalie felt about her parents he didn't want to get into. It changed with her mood but even though he had gone with her to the funeral, Rosalie had sat at the back watching with an expression that was hard to read. Even Edward had not gotten much out of her thoughts at that time because her parents were tied into Royce and the standards that they had set and the life that she could have had.
With him it was easy. Esme was his mother, Carlisle was his father. And God knows it was easy with Esme because she made it so effortless to love.
By the time this was over he wouldn't have put it past her to have adopted the wolves outside.
Esme rubbed his back and Emmett screwed up his face into his shoulder. He tried to shudder out all he was feeling but before he could the door slammed open.
It was Jasper.
To his credit he looked incredibly awkward.
"Sorry" he said dithering on the spot as Esme pulled back and Emmett turned trying to get his wild emotions under control (again, not that there was no point with Jasper—hell that had probably been what had set him off in the first place).
"But Jacob is back, he wants to talk about what happens next and Carlisle thinks we should all be there. He's got the kid, Seth running outside"
Emmett nodded pushing himself up off the sink. He was beginning to feel like at the end of this (if there was an end in sight) he was going to be perfect at putting on a mask to hide his emotions.
"Sorry" Jasper muttered though what he was sorry for Emmett didn't know.
Sorry for interrupting the moment? Sorry for what was happening. Sorry for his wife, for Emmett's? Sorry for what was going to happen next? What? What was their left to be sorry for? Emmett was sick of hearing the word.
Jasper just patted him on the back as they went through into the living room to find out if they were going to war with the very people that six months ago they had been allies with.
Yeah. Emmett was sick of the word sorry.
And I just love Esme, I think out of all of the Cullens it is Emmett she gets along with the best. Certainly you don't hear about any awkwardness in their relationship in the books, then again you barely hear about Emmett or Rosalie in the books so it may have been Stephanie's intention that they all hated each other. Who knows. But in my head Emmett and Esme have the best mother/son relationship.
And I will do my best to bring you the next chapter sooner rather than later.
Next Chapter-Bella's hormones get the best of her when she hears what has happened reminding all of the Cullen's that they have not fed. Seth Clearwater has no issues with bravery, Rosalie despairs she really does. (Rosalie's point of view for this chapter)
