Chapter 34
The results were in.
Tressa stood there outside of the arena, having received the phone call she'd been waiting for. Since their jobs were on the road, the doctor agreed to call her with the test results instead of forcing all three to come back into the clinic in Minnesota. She was almost 11 weeks along and they were back on the road, doing their jobs and Tressa had brought the New Year in alone.
No family.
No friends.
Andrew had gone back home to Scotland and had invited her, but Tressa declined, not thinking that was a very good idea. They weren't a couple…she didn't even know what to call them at this point. In two weeks, she would be into her second trimester and, thankfully, the morning sickness had worn off. Shutting her eyes briefly, Tressa didn't know how to feel about this news because, honestly, she didn't have a preference on either man. Now she knew…and now she had to tell them and probably cut ties with the man who wasn't the father.
"Pull it together, Tressa." She whispered to herself, taking a deep breath and scrolled through her phone, the text messages, landing on Jon's name. She had told him about the pregnancy through text, but this time, he deserved to hear this face to face.
Can you meet me in the parking lot? It's important.
Jon was there not even 5 minutes later, already in the building and Tressa decided once again to just rip the band-aid off to get the pain over with. "It's not yours, Jon. Andrew is the father."
"Oh thank fuck," Jon dropped to his knees, face in his hands. That was probably not the reaction she was expecting and, to be fair, he wasn't expecting it either. But it was the BEST outcome for him, and for her, because their friendship was still in recovery mode. "Christ, darlin'," Jon peered up from between his fingers, finally pulling himself upright. "I know that sounds bad, but…you know how some people have a baby to fix themselves, and it just hurts the relationship more? We'd have been like that." Only without getting pregnant on purpose. His eyes narrowed slightly as he stared down at her. "Scottie boy know yet?"
"No." Tressa shook her head, glad Jon was happy with the outcome because she felt like she was torn in two. "I have to go tell him now. I'm glad you're happy with this. I'm moving to Tampa since he is the father. I was going to move to Vegas if it was yours, but now we know and we can move on." He wouldn't be burdened with a baby he clearly didn't want. Hell, she didn't even know how Drew would react to this. "I don't have a lot of time, so I gotta go find him."
She walked back inside the arena, placing a hand on her stomach briefly and then pulled it away, wearing tunic tops to hide her pregnancy as much as she could. Nobody in WWE besides a select handful of people knew about it and Tressa wanted to keep it that way. She found Drew's locker room and took a deep breath before knocking on it, pushing it open to hear the shower going. Instead of bothering him, she just sent him a text message and went back to her table to start her job for the evening.
We need to talk when you have a minute, please.
One day sure, Jon wanted kids. But he did not want them with a woman who didn't, who couldn't, love him back. That was just signing themselves, and potential children, up for trouble. Hearing she was moving to Florida didn't surprise him, though for her own sake, he hoped Tressa thought this through. What if Drew didn't want this baby, or what if he found them to be an annoyance to whatever life he did have in Florida? Jon still considered her to be his best friend and he didn't want her to get hurt.
Tressa was a jumbled mess and didn't know what the right thing to do was. Leaving Minnesota and moving south was a given, but she didn't know if Florida was the right choice for her and the baby. Tampa was beautiful, but she had the same thoughts rolling around in her head as Jon. What if Drew was pissed about being the father and wanted nothing to do with this baby? She really liked the Scotsman, but they weren't in a relationship and, even though she didn't need financial support, Tressa wanted this baby to have both a mother and a father that loved him or her unconditionally. First, she had to talk to Drew and pushed all other negative thoughts out of her mind for the time being.
One step at a time, she thought, glancing at her phone to see if he texted her back.
Nothing.
Drew had definitely gotten the text, he was just a bit floored. He honestly thought he had braced himself for this outcome, but apparently, he hadn't. He was going to be a father. Drew had impregnated a woman he didn't love and was going to have a baby. Obviously, this situation wasn't exactly uncommon and people managed it all the time, it was just…mind-blowing. He was going to be a Daddy.
Trying to reply, Drew couldn't bring himself to do it because he didn't know what to say. He started sentences only to wind up backspacing on them, shaking his head. Would she move to Florida? That was kind of selfish of him to expect that, and honestly crazy of her to relocate to parts unknown, just for a man since she could easily raise that baby wherever and he would still come and visit. He didn't know. Everything was a mess.
Dinner after work? He finally managed to send something, knowing conversations via text were not always the best.
Yes, I will meet you in the parking lot tonight after the show.
The rest of the night went smoothly with no problems, surprisingly. Tressa was craving pineapple something fierce by the time it was all said and done, much to Suzanne and Tabitha's amusement. They didn't know about the pregnancy – she didn't trust anyone with the information and still had 2 weeks to go. Her stomach was slowly poking out, but nowhere near enough to show the pregnancy yet. It was only a matter of time before she completely popped, however, and then everybody would know.
When the show ended, Tressa cleaned up her table and grabbed her purse to head outside, so many different emotions flowing through her. It was 10 minutes later when Andrew finally joined her outside, freshly showered with his long hair pulled back in a tight tail at the nape of his neck. At least he was handsome and kind, so those were two qualities their baby would hopefully have.
"Hi." She greeted quietly, still not knowing how he would react, and could see the hesitation on his own face. "Ready to go?"
It had occurred to him that he could have been misinterpreting her, maybe he wasn't the father. Though, he expected if he wasn't, Jon would have been up her backside and impossible to remove. Or maybe she hadn't told Jon yet. God, this was not doing anything for his nerves.
"Aye," He bent down to kiss her cheek, unsure where they stood at this exact moment. She looked as nervous as he felt. "Craving pineapple?" He teased, rolling his eyes playfully when she nodded.
It could have been worse. His mother had craved soil. Not dirt, but proper, deep, chocolate brown loam. She had said it looked like cake. He was surprised he had come out fairly normal.
"Pineapple with cottage cheese, actually."
It was the truth. That was her new favorite snack and it was good for her and the baby, so it was a win-win. Tressa reached out to take his hand, lacing their fingers together, and walked with him to his rental. They hadn't come here together, but they could always come back to grab her car after dinner was over with, providing this night didn't go the way she hoped. Once they arrived at the car, Tressa stopped them from getting inside and refused to wait until after dinner, or during dinner at a public place, to tell him this.
"Andrew…" She took his hand, swallowing hard, and pressed it against her small bump, watery greys locked on ocean blue. "It's yours."
Well, there was confirmation of what he had assumed and he didn't know what to say to her, his eyes fastened on his hand. She had tears in her eyes, it made him wonder if she wasn't pleased by it. Made sense, even with their issues, she had known Jon longer and she knew where she stood with the other man. They were just fuck friends; they hardly knew each other outside of work and the bedroom.
"All right," Drew nodded, gently palming the barely noticeable bump, and cleared his throat. "So what now, Tres?"
"I don't know." Was he happy about this? Was he indifferent? At least he didn't drop to his knees and yell 'oh thank fuck' as Jon had earlier. "Jon was happy it was not his. He said it would have destroyed our friendship and he's probably right, it would have." Maybe now they could heal that friendship and get back to the way things used to be. "Listen, I know you didn't expect this to happen and I didn't either, so…I'm giving you an out, Drew. You can walk away from this and I won't fault you for it or hate you or anything. I'm not going to ask you for anything either, no child support or anything like that. You have your career to think about and your own life." This man had just made it back to the WWE not even a year ago and he was on fire right now on the main roster. She didn't want to ruin that for him, his second chance in WWE with a baby. "It's your choice." Surely, he'd want to have a baby with someone who loved him, and he loved in return instead of a fuck buddy, who was damaged goods and had a TON of baggage.
"I'm a wee bit offended, lass, that ye think ye even need to offer all that to me." Drew said flatly, without any heat.
Just because he played a villain on camera did not make him one off-screen. He was a bit surprised that Jon had been happy about this. Drew figured the other man would have jumped on the chance to have Tressa in his life for a literal 18-year commitment.
"Ye never have to ask me for anything because I will freely give." His voice was firm, his back straightening as he stared down at her. "Ye not in this alone, Tressa."
It had nothing to do with his character on television. She hadn't known Drew long, but she could tell he was a man of honor. He was a man of dignity and pride – a true Scotsman at heart. He was noble and kind, at least in her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you." Tears slid down her cheeks as he kept his hand on her small bump and she could tell, just by the way he touched her, he wanted to be here for this baby. "I just don't want you to think I'm trapping you or something because I'm not." Her voice cracked as Tressa took a deep breath, wiping the tears away that kept falling. At least they knew who the father was, so that was one obstacle down and one less worry.
"Well now, pet," His blue eyes crinkled at the corner as he smiled down at her, humor lacing his tone. "If ye propose to me anytime soon, I may think that." He reached up to wipe away another tear that fell. "Come on now, at least ye know the bairn will have me stunning good looks." That got a mild chuckle out of her and he looped an arm around her petite frame, pulling Tressa into him and resting his cheek on the top of her head, sighing softly. "We'll figure it out as we go, Tres."
"Yeah, we will."
It was comforting to know she wouldn't be alone in this, already knowing Jon would distance himself from her. Their friendship would never be the same again, not after this and not after they injected sex into it. Tressa had lost so much in a short period of time, but now came the real test. They had to tell their families and Tressa had no idea how her mother and father would react. Or Drew's family, for that matter.
"Are you the only one who lives here in the states? Or is some of your family here as well instead of Scotland?" They had picked a restaurant to eat at, both starving and, thankfully, they had pineapple with cottage cheese. She wasn't surprised when he said all of his family was overseas and he was the only one that had grown up and lived in the states, starting wrestling at the tender age of 14. "How do you think your family will react to this news?"
"Mother died a few years ago and me Da is still in Scotland, he's rather aloof about the idea of me being a father." Because he had already spoken to his old man about it.
His parents had been very supportive of him and his career choices. He had gone to train for wrestling at 15 and his parents had supported that as well, as long as he showed the same focus on studying. Now he had a degree in criminology, so… he had a fallback career if this didn't pan out, or when he retired.
"I think he's afraid he'll never see any children of mine."
Her heart broke at the news of his mother's passing and Tressa couldn't imagine what she would do if something happened to her own mother. They were relatively close, she talked to the woman at least once a day and planned on telling her about the baby soon. "I'm sorry to hear that, Drew. He shouldn't be afraid of not seeing children of yours because he will see this baby." She reached across the table to take his hand, squeezing it. "After he or she is born, we'll take a trip to Scotland to see him and he can meet his grandchild, if you want. I would love to see where you grew up and meet him too." Whether either of them wanted it or not, they were bonded for life with this child.
"Slow down, lass, one step at a time." She was not one for doing things slowly, that was for sure. He was mildly panicked at how her words seemed to imply that they were definitely going to be a 'we'. "Maybe we should get to know each other properly since we'll be parents." They were going about this all ass-backward; he could practically feel his mam's ghost trying to smack him upside his head for being a total prat about how this had happened and how little they knew about each other. "Come on, pineapple and…cottage cheese, ye've barely touched it."
She saw the panic in his eyes and took a bite out of her pineapple and cottage cheese, chewing thoughtfully. "We're not a couple and we're not together, Andrew. We're going to be parents and all I'm saying is, if you want to take the baby to Scotland to meet your father, that's fine, but I'm going with you, if you do." There was no way in hell she was allowing her baby to fly overseas without her. Not an option. "And we are going to get to know each other because we'll be in each other's lives for the rest of our lives because of this baby. Sorry, I should have been clearer when I said that about going to Scotland with you." Tressa did make it sound like they were a couple when that wasn't the case at all.
