RINGS AND THINGS
The next morning, Lisbon woke up to breakfast in bed. As she and Jane enjoyed his latest culinary specialty - quiche Lorraine - they excitedly made plans for a Saturday wedding.
Stan had a friend at city hall who helped push through their marriage license and the permit to use the fountain for a private event, on such short notice.
Jane spoke to the bishop, who did not agree that their marriage was emergent - touched though he was by their story - but did agree to officiate on Saturday, with the understanding that they would start marriage counseling (online, since they didn't live locally) and that everyone would meet back at Lisbon's home parish in 6 months' time for a proper catholic ceremony.
Tommy helped Jane find a local tailor, and Annie was thrilled to go dress shopping with her Auntie Reese.
Jimmy set up a small reception for them at a local pub he frequented.
Karen helped Lisbon send a handful of invitations and announcements to their closest friends and coworkers, via next day mail. (Though neither she nor Jane really expected anyone would drop everything to attend a faraway wedding on such short notice).
"This is going to be perfect, Patrick," Teresa sighed into her love's ear.
"Any wedding that involves me marrying you would be perfect," he hummed back
"So which do you choose, my dear? Platinum or gold?" Jane asked, as Lisbon carefully weighed the options for their new, to-be-engraved wedding bands.
"I think the platinum! Despite the gold cross, I've always been more drawn to silver," she explained.
"And," he noted, "it will be clear when people see mine that it is quite different from the gold one I used to wear."
"Also that!" She smiled, holding that ring and her cross in her fingers
They left the jewelers, planning to pick up the finished bands on Friday.
Jane steered them to a nearby bench, and sat close to Lisbon.
"Don't forget about this one," he said, coyly, dropping a small velvet box into her lap.
"Patrick, what is this?!" She exclaimed in surprise.
He waited a delicious moment, allowing her to swim in the suspense, then tapped the box and said, "Open it!"
A huge smile emerged on Teresa's face as she recognized the echo of her words and actions from the shoebox reveal in Malibu. The smile grew even bigger, and her eyes glimmered as she saw the gorgeous engagement ring he had chosen. Platinum band, with a splash of small diamonds and emeralds all around.
"Patrick this is the most beautiful ring I think I've ever seen!"
"An appropriate accoutrement for the most beautiful woman alive," Jane murmured into her ear, as her eyes got misty. "Gems that sparkle like the night sky in the tropics."
After allowing him to slide the ring onto the appropriate finger, Teresa pulled him to standing, so she could more fully surround him with her arms and kissed him with abandon - with complete disregard for being in public, for once.
On Friday, Jane went to the jewelers to pick up the rings. He checked both to see that the engraving was done correctly, then paid the jeweler and left for the airport.
He arrived at the gate just in time to see Cho emerge from the jetway. Jane waved him over, and the two friends walked to the exit.
"I really appreciate this, Kimball!" Jane said with great sincerity.
"I wouldn't have missed it!" Cho replied. "Are those the rings?"
"They are indeed!"
Cho stopped to look at the larger one, focusing on the engraved text inside. "What you mean to me?" He read aloud.
"Yes," Jane confirmed, "it's a phrase with special meaning for Teresa and I."
"Okay." Cho stated with his typically matter-of-fact tone, as they left for the city, and Cho's hotel.
Lisbon was preparing to pick up her dress and a few other things that day, but was mildly disappointed when Annie said she couldn't come along. As Lisbon began down the stairs she was surprised by a knock at the door. She was even more surprised when she opened the door to a sunshiny-as-ever Grace van Pelt!
"Hello boss! You look beautiful! Jane said you might need company to pick up your things today?"
"You came! And please stop calling me 'boss!''' Teresa laughed as she embraced her gratefully and got her a quick glass of water. Then the two friends left for the bridal shop.
