Ji Hoo awoke from his supposed nap in the middle of the night. He was aware that he was not in his bed. His bed is cozy, but not as cozy as sleeping next to Jan Di, his true love. He remembered that they used to sleep close to each other now and then, especially when they were in the emergency stairwell. She occasionally rests her head on his shoulder, chest, or even his lap, but they have never shared a bed.
Jan Di...
He fully opened his eyes to find her soundly sleeping. She had her arms around him and her head on her chest, softly snoring. Even if he wanted to sleep longer, he needed to shower and change into something more comfortable. He carefully untangled himself from her embrace and headed to the closet, where he pulled out Jan Di's towel and Pyjamas pants, which he always used when he spent overnight at her apartment. He usually slept on the sofa, but now he got to share the same bed with her, which felt strange but nice.
After 10 minutes, he exited the bathroom and crawled back into bed, kissing her head and deciding to sleep for two more hours and wake up early because he had a tight school schedule and did not want to sleep during lecture time. Jan Di, on the other hand, had a free day and he was sure she would go to the library and also go to the porridge shop.
The following day, Jan Di woke up at the scent of Ji Hoo's specialty pancakes and cappuccino. She wondered if he slept at his home or her hostel. The idea of sleeping next to him in her bed made her blush.
"You're awake?" Ji Hoo remarked startling her.
Jan Di sat upright and looked at the time. It was 10 am and Ji Hoo was drinking coffee while on his laptop. "Sunbae?" she questioned.
"Good morning?"
"Good morning sunbae" she responded.
"Freshen up and come and have breakfast with me"
She smiled as she noticed how at ease he was in her small room. He acted as if he were in his own room. Ji Hoo got up from his chair and handed Jan Di her nightgown and towel. "There is warm water in the bathroom," he informed her.
"Gomawo sunbae," she murmured as she made her way to the bathroom. Ji Hoo grinned as the door snapped shut. He remembered the episode in Macau when he discovered her in the bathroom. It was a distant memory, yet even after a year had gone by, he remembers it clearly. The way she cried all morning and he had to write a small message stating 'Memory deleted' to make her feel better.
Ji Hoo got up from his chair and proceeded to retrieve Jan Di's favorite cup, which had a picture of him and her on it when they were in Macau, and her plate. When the water in the bathroom stopped running, he took out her hair dryer. He usually loved running his hands through her hair. Her hair had gotten longer and looked wonderful on her. He was surprised when she allowed it to grow long after he suggested it during the time, he was cutting her bangs.
Sunbae...you have a message, please read it... that was Yoon Ji Hoo's message ringtone. It was a recording of Jan Di's voice.
He took out his phone to read the message.
'Ji Hoo, my parents wish to see you at our family house on Valentine's Day. I hope you and your grandfather can come' by Yoo Sun-Young
He groaned instantly. The daughter of the Yoo family; one of the biggest families in Korea and also the biggest fundraisers in the Su-Am charity foundation was inviting him to a family dinner. The girl was likable and lovely, most people called her his perfect match but, in his opinion, Jan Di was best, and besides, the one he loved was Jan Di, not anyone else. He couldn't see himself loving someone else apart from Jan Di. He wondered if he told Jan Di that he would be out of town on Valentine's Day, would she be happy or sad? He had promised to take her out that day but he couldn't disobey the elders' orders and maybe he could take it as a business meeting. He recalled when his grandfather first introduced her to him.
Jan Di had been jealous and spent a full week without talking to him. She had refused to congratulate him for passing his Medical entrance exam and stayed away from his home until he sought her out during his grandfather's birthday party. He had asked her to dance with him. She had refused at first saying he should dance with his girlfriend but he had dragged her to the dance floor.
Hey had danced closely with each other. He had informed her that Yoo Sun-Young was just a family friend and she was going to manage the foundation on behalf of Grandfather. Their conversation had been so tense, Ji Hoo had promised that he would never hold anyone close to him as he held her and that no one would ever take a place in his heart. He had promised her that he wanted to seal that promise with a kiss but they had been interrupted by kids who were playing around at the party. And from then on, they never had any silly fights between them.
Jan Di came out of the bathroom; she noticed Ji Hoo reading something on his phone. "What are you reading..." she asked. Ji Hoo immediately turned and his gaze fell on her from head to toe. Jan Di was wearing a simple white off-the-shoulder chiffon dress with her simple pump shoes he gave her as a gift. Her hair was wet, she was looking natural and pure and extremely beautiful in his eyes as always.
"I was wondering if I could bring a spare bed in here?" he asked changing the topic. "Or you move into my hostel since it's bigger for the two of us," he said. "It has a big bedroom with two queen-size beds, a private bathroom, dining and living room, and even a small reading library just like the one at home"
She looked away at such a suggestion. Jan Di knew well that no matter what, Ji Hoo would want to follow her anywhere she goes but if people saw that she moved in with him, the students would gossip so much and the news would reach Gu Jun Pyo since he has her monitored all the time.
As if sensing her hesitation, he spoke again "Its a private room, away from the gossiping of the students"
Jan Di thought of their Grandfather who would be lonely without them. "How about—"
She began to say but Ji Hoo interrupted her. He put his forefinger on her lips. He then proceeded to caress her wet hair as he spoke again, "Harabeoji already approved and besides, maids are around, his full-time nurse is always by his side" he said "You don't have to worry"
Jan Di was relieved at the information but what bothered her is that he would be lonely. "OK, but we have to visit him from time to time"
Ji Hoo grinned. "So you agree to move in with me?" he asked extending his hand to hers and began swinging it innocently.
She sighed and reluctantly agreed. It wouldn't kill her to move in with him. They had shared a room several times and also lived under the same roof for almost three months but for some reason, her heart thumped faster at waking up every morning to see him every day. It was going to be a long year for her.
"And I have something else to tell you," he said tentatively releasing her hand. He walked to the bed and removed the hair drier and connected it to electricity. "I will be out of town this Saturday" he muttered tentatively as he dried her hair while combing it.
Jan Di was surprised by what he said. "But why?" she decided to inquire about him leaving town. "Will you be spending a night there?" she asked again "How about our—" she cut herself off.
Ji Hoo swallowed and disconnected the hair drier. He took a seat in his usual chair and took her hand in his and began to caress it. "I was invited with Grandfather by the Yoo family for dinner but Harabeoji isn't sure if he's going, so I have to be there"
She pulled her hand away from his. "Oh...I see" she didn't know why but she felt jealous but the prospect of Ji Hoo and Yoo Sun-young having dinner together stirred wheels in her head. It was obvious that Sun-young could one day become Mrs. Yoon but thinking of this made her sad. The two of them make a great couple like how workers gossip at the Yoon foundation.
As she was still thinking, she didn't notice Ji Hoo kneeling before her. He raised his hand to her face and settled there on her cheek. "Jan Di-ah," he said softly
She continued to look away, avoiding his eyes because, with one glance at him, he would know what is going through her head. "It's fine with me" she replied still looking away.
Ji Hoo felt bad at the way she was avoiding his eyes. He wanted her to say something like; don't go with her or will you come back in time for our date? He wanted her to come clean with her feelings. He tried to tilt her chin and get her opinion but she rose from her chair. She pretended to look for her cup to take tea until she felt cold when he wrapped his ring around her neck. "What are you doing?" she panicked.
Ji Hoo after wrapping the ring around her neck, then wrapped his arms around her waist pulling her closer to his chest. He draped her hair on the other side of her head. His hand remained to hold her waist while another was caressing the side of her face with the back of his knuckles. He then kissed her cheek before he could speak again. "This ring I have given you as my promise to you that I will not sleep out of town that day. I'm not sure about the time but I will be here with you"
Jan Di's heart skipped a beat and she smiled secretly. She cleared her throat and turned to face him, still in his arms. "Do you promise?"
"Have I ever let you down, Otter?" he softly said, cupping her face in his palms.
She lowered her head. Ji Hoo has never broken his word or broken any commitments he made to her in all the time she has known him. He has always kept every promise he has made to her. "Wait for me."
"All right, I'll wait for your return."
"How about dinner tonight?" he flirtatiously proposed.
"OK," she said. "Can you pick me up at 7:00 p.m.?"
He laughed. "Sure, I'll meet you in your room..." It would be fascinating to go on a date with someone who lived in the same room...
They shared a pleasant smile, and he clasped her hand in his. He brought it to his lips and kissed it tenderly. "I can't wait... Have a great day" He brushed her hair, rose, and exited the room.
Ji Hoo arrived on time to pick up Jan Di. Jan Di had to admit that she hadn't been able to focus on her work. He hadn't either throughout his lectures. She put on makeup and wore a pink embroidered A-line dress with long sleeves. Ji Hoo was surprised to see her dressed up and complimented her. At first glimpse, he had to agree that he had to catch his breath.
Ji Hoo didn't try to impress Jan Di with expensive gifts on their date. He knew her so well, and he understood that the small things and quality time were what she cherished. He took her out to dinner and on a stroll along the Han River in the evening, where they marveled at the gorgeous lights and listened to the sound of the slow-flowing water. He placed his hand into hers as they went, and they continued to walk hand in hand. He removed a strand of hair off her face that had been blown carelessly by the wind as they rested on the bridge railing. His finger stayed there, and he delicately touched her cheek as they looked into one other's eyes. They were also pleasantly silent. And the timing was virtually perfect.
They arrived at his hostel at ten o'clock. "Do you want to come in?" Ji Hoo commented as he opened the door to the room where they would be seeing. Jan Di nodded and smiled. The interior was created with grey tones and Copenhagen-style elegance in mind. The modest motif is brightened with a baby blue couch. Contrasting poufs combine grey and blue tones. The wooden coffee table includes three separate tabletops for storing books, beverages, and decorations. The space is strewn with intriguing art prints. The kitchen is located towards the back of the L-shaped space. Two sides of the compact kitchen are surrounded by grey cabinetry. Opposite the L-shaped kitchen is a dining room with banquette seats. Diners are told to by motivational wall art.
The breakfast bar creates a visible barrier between the kitchen and the eating room. Jan Di yelled loudly, "Wow!" "This is stunning."
"Would you like to tour our bedroom?" He inquired as he led her to another room. He opened the door to the master bedroom, which was as large as her previous hostel.
The little side tables on either side of the queen-sized beds have been chosen in various color schemes. The cactus is illuminated by an internal lighting system. Another unique room divider is a glass box with cacti, similar to a small courtyard—or a big terrarium. Behind the glass, the case is a walk-in closet. After dark, perimeter lighting highlights the rough brickwork along the ceiling line. The bedroom vanity table is lit by a modest pendant lamp.
The walk-in closet is accessible both from the main living space and from the bedroom. A full-length closet mirror that is fixed helps to separate the different compartments. Behind a modern bathroom vanity, the same mirror design has been fitted.
He escorted her to the couch and began brewing tea. They sipped their tea and remained silent. They then laid their mugs down at the same time. He turned to face her, placed a hand on her cheek, and gently caressed it.
"Will you just say my name? It's nice to hear you say it. When you speak it, it sounds so much better..."
"…Ji Hoo…" she said softly looking away
He leaned in and caressed her lips, then kissed her cheek, then her nose, and finally her other cheek.
He breathed sharply as he turned away from her. He stood, burying his face in his hands, finding it impossible to retain control.
"Geum Jan Di, what have you done to me?" As he strode around the room, he inquired loudly. "How come I can't stop loving you?"
That was it...
