Prompt 26: THE WITNESS

Its mouth was a little too wide, teeth a little too straight - this imperfect, made-perfect copy was nigh-unblinking as it wrapped its mouth around words in a way that seemed just less than human.

River recoiled.

"Don't you recognize us?" asked her double, and she wasn't quite sure what it was doing with its both over- and under-expressive face. "We are not your friend. We are not your enemy. We are your... salvation."

The nothingness that followed was either a blessing or a threat. River woke up to being shaken, one set of hands on her arms and another on her face. Daniels was in her face, asking her questions - her muscles untensed, sore from how rigid she had been standing - and Aurora was shaking her lightly, trying to get her to wake up.

"We're fucked," came out of her mouth, almost as one word.

One of them - her addled brain wouldn't tell her which - asked her what she had seen. It was the Black Garden, she knew, because she had been there before, if only a time or two. And it was herself, but not herself, something speaking through her teeth. Something whispering beneath its words. A second message she could almost feel in her bones.

River shrugged out of their grasp and headed for the Pyramid's exit.
