Chapter 36: A Maiden's Trial

.

Hinata and Shikamaru paused before hundreds of guests and smiled, as camera flashes kept going off. She kept her eyes fixed on the ground. At the time, the white headdress protected her from many visual stimuli, as her eyes were unable to search, just to confirm whether Sasuke Uchiha was there or not, for he had been among the guests that her father had requested be there.

A hand squeeze came on her side, and she smiled at Shikamaru, who commented he felt happy as it was almost time, as the priestesses spread instructions to all the guests on how to join the formation.

.

When Shikamaru had gotten up from bed that morning, many thoughts happened at once, seemingly nonstop, because he had awakened a little behind schedule. Did this get done? Did that get done? Was everything being communicated?

Shikamaru slid the door open and stepped outside his room wearing a simple Yutaka, his hair pinned up. The house buzzed with sounds of movements walking up and down the halls. He moved about the mansion, looking around to see what each staff member was up to. He was sure Hinata needed all hands on deck.

Likewise, he eventually found Hinata, delegating tasks with urgency, probably making sure everything was in order before they left the house.

When she turned his way, he could tell her dancing heartbeat was more of a pending panic attack after she had expressed that a call had come from the shrine. Why was the shrine not fully staffed that day?

"Then I'll call your father and sister, so they can help with getting ready."

Hinata gave him a look of gratitude.

"Can you also send word to Kurenai-sensei?" She asked.

He sent her a nod before he was stopped by a maid who jumped in his way.

"Shikamaru-kun, Hinata-sama, Yoshino is waiting outside. She says it's time to leave!"

"I'll meet you outside," Hinata said to him as they went in different directions.

On her way out, Hinata glanced at her watch. Everything on the to-do list was checked off. They had made good use of time. She followed the group of maids toward the gates, where Yoshino was waiting.

"Did everything get delivered to the Shrine?" Yoshino asked a maid.

"Yes. Everyone's kimonos were dropped off, including ours." The maid replied.

She then turned to Hinata. "Any updates on the flowers?"

"It hasn't arrived at the venue. Ino-chan said it had something to do with keeping them in cold temperatures or else they'll wilt."

They glanced past the gates, where Shikamaru could be seen hurrying their way.

"Is everything set?" Yoshino asked her son.

"Yes, there shouldn't be any surprises." Shikamaru said to everyone.

Yoshino giggled at her response and said nothing, as the world was constantly full of surprises.

.

During the walk to the shrine, Shikamaru and Hinata trailed behind the group, their fingers intertwined as they conversed with each other while they waved at every person who congratulated them.

Yoshino glanced behind her, suddenly overcome by emotions. He looked so much like his father, almost like a copy, yet very opposite. She had never seen her son show so much open affection, as it used to go against his very existence, back during a phase he went through where he proclaimed he will live his life in a way that would preserve his energy. Yet there he was, sometimes reaching for a hug, the two always smiling.

"We're getting another visit from Suna," Hinata filled him in. "I've also been informed we might see Toneri-san there, as well as Temari-san. Kankuro was left in charge of the village."

He seemed pleased Gaara and Temari accepted the invite.

"Yoshino, what was your wedding day like?" Hinata asked during the climb up the steps to the mountain. She kept her eyes on the moss-covered stones as she listened.

"Shika's father was so nervous. When it was his turn to drink the blessed wine, he forgot to wait for the priestess to fill it," Yoshino said, as she was a few steps ahead.

Shikamaru shook his head and smiled, not able to picture his father making a single mistake.

"So, what was your favorite part of the ceremony when you and dad got married?" Shikamaru asked.

"If I recall correctly, your father's favorite part was probably the exchange of vows, because he got to drink. And mine was getting home just so I could take off the heavy Kimono," Though Yoshino did not remember whether she walked home or got carried there.

The maids that were by her side giggled.

"I had the same struggle," A maid chimed in. "Which is why I kept asking Hinata-sama to choose a change of clothes because she'll need them after the ceremony."

"When did they start breaking traditions?" Yoshino asked.

"All I know, wedding ceremonies are less strict nowadays." The maid replied.

Yoshino glanced at Hinata, who smiled her way.

"I guess it is true what they say. Every generation has it easier." Yoshino said.

"Not always. It's harder to leave a mark on the world nowadays." Hinata replied. "I believe what you meant to say is that we now have more choices, including the choice of breaking traditions if we see something we don't like," By then, they were almost at the top of the mountain.

.

Hinata paused on the last step, as she saw Hanabi standing outside the red monumental gate, looking completely different from when she last saw her. She resembled their mother so much, with just a slight change in her hairstyle.

Hanabi was holding a framed picture of Neji. The simmering anger that had been there yesterday, appeared to be completely gone as she wore the biggest and brightest smile.

As the group got closer to one another, Shikamaru returned everyone's greetings while the conversation flowed back and forth between her father, Ino, Kurenai, and Hinata's hairstylist.

Hinata reached down and hugged Mirai as her gaze met each person. She lingered on Ino, happy that Shikamaru had said something to get her to show.

"Shika said you would cry if I didn't make it," Ino said with a grin.

Hinata looked mortified upon hearing this.

"Troublesome. It might have been implied." Shikamaru said just to tease her.

Hinata giggled behind her hand. "And how are you feeling?"

"I might be leaving after the ceremony. I'm still healing, and feel kind of groggy,"

"If your aunt is attending, then who's handling the flowers?" Hiashi asked Ino.

"My part-timer is back at the shop. He's ready to deliver everything soon," Ino responded.

While the conversation continued, Hinata lifted her gaze, noticing all the ancient, monumental trees surrounding the shrine, which seemed to be taken right from the forest of death, with its massive size.

They all turned around as a priest walked up to them, holding pale lavender beads that looked more like pearls. Behind him were two priestesses who smiled in the most reserved way. He congratulated the couple, and greeted their family and friends, before asking them to follow him as they all entered past the red gates.

.

Being raised as a Hyuga, not much impressed Hanabi aside from the wonders of technology.

However, there was a feeling of grandeur as she walked around the shrine, which looked more like an ancient feudal castle than anything. Hanabi was very aware of the generous donation the place receives from all clans, to remain in such a pristine shape.

"Hiashi, Hanabi-chan is looking less like you, each time I see her," Yoshino said with a smile. "The hairstyle suits Hanabi-chan," Yoshino commented as she looked from Hanabi to Hinata.

Hanabi looked their way and smiled at the compliment. Tired of having long hair, she had given her sister's hair stylist creative freedom, asking for a makeover of some sort to make her look more serious and mature. The hairstylist was able to execute the assignment.

"I heard a few things have changed since I got married at this shrine," Yoshino said to the priest as they followed past a garden.

Everyone paused around the priest as they stood in front of the structure where their goddess was enshrined.

"It was wise that you've all decided to come for an early rehearsal before the real ceremony begins. You see, we were able to recreate our own pond of truth, since it delights our Kami-sama to see maidens get married off, under her roof." The priest did not need to mention that it happened after a generous Hyuga donation in helping rebuild after the war.

A priestess appeared with a wooden bowl filled with water, containing a single dahlia.

"Hinata-sama, if you may. We must see the water's reaction." The priestess said to her.

Hanabi remained emotionless, thinking to herself how flawed the rituals were. From what she had seen, nothing was able to reveal or measure other truths that mattered most, such as love. But as much as Hanabi appeared stoic, memories of the night before stirred something inside. She had been willing to get corrupted, wanting to give herself up, all the while knowing how much this meant to her clan… How did her sister put up with it for this long?

"Daughter, what are you waiting for?" Hanabi had snapped out of her thoughts, believing it was her being addressed. "We already prepared you for this. But the priest must make certain." Hiashi said.

Hinata dipped her hand. There was no surprise when the water glowed a sky-blue color. Her hand immediately searched for warmth inside the sleeves of her kimono after drying up with a handkerchief.

"Wonderful. It seems you will get to greet Kami-sama," A priestess said.

"It's funny how things change. Back when I got married, just about anyone was able to greet the statue and pray," Yoshino commented.

"Our beliefs have evolved." The priest answered automatically.

Beliefs? How troublesome.

The last Kami they had met turned out to be a demon, the first mother of Shinobis, which is why Shikamaru had denounced any religion and is only following through with this traditional wedding because that is how it's always been. He glanced at Hinata, wondering if she felt the same way about all of this.

"Um, everyone, can I have a moment alone with Ino-chan?" There were rare times Hinata had mastery over her expression, and right then was one of them. Although she directed the question toward the group, she kept her eyes on Ino.

Ino frowned when she noticed the worried look that came over Shikamaru's expression. Yoshino and Kurenai kept their true thoughts hidden, as they turned to the priestess, with Yoshino nodding their way.

"We could make use of our time by going on ahead," Yoshino said.

"Right this way." The priestess motioned to follow them.

"We're going ahead and get ready first," Yoshino said over her shoulder as the group began to walk towards the larger building.

.

Ino joined her on the grass, dropping her bag on the side, as they both stared off into the blue sky.

"Ino-chan… " If they were to get along, she knows that would make Shikamaru happy. "Do you think it's possible for us to ever be friends?"

"What's your astrology sign?"

It didn't escape Hinata's notice that Ino seemed set on denying her friendship.

"Ino, you already know I was born close to the end of December. Shika was at my party."

"Which you didn't even invite me to. Do you see? We're not compatible,"

Hinata sighed. "How about we take it one day at a time? Let's see how today and-"

"Hinata, why did you choose him? Shika's not a freedom fighter kind of guy,"

She didn't consciously choose him. But when Hinata looked at him, it was like her eyes had already chosen him for herself.

"I knew Shika, before I ever met him. I knew of his likes and dislikes since his mother wouldn't stop talking about him or his father. Though I honestly think I would've gone for his father instead, since he was actually more laid back-"

Ino's shoulder twitched for a second before bursting into laughter, both scaring, and surprising Hinata, since up until now Ino had been on the fence.

"Your words are chaos right now! Are you mentally spiraling or something?"

"... But his dad was handsome."

Ino kept laughing. "Stop! Just stop talking, please!"

Once Ino gained a resemblance of composure, she leaned forward, collecting her knees, resting her chin.

"So that's all? I thought you picked Shika, so he can plan out all your battles and victories for you."

Hinata tossed her a look, feeling guilty because that had occurred to her right towards the end of her battle.

When it comes down to history, is that how it's all going to be told or remembered? That her husband took care of all the logistics? She sighed. If only that had been the case.

"I didn't become a clan leader just to fight. Don't you remember how I almost fell back into place when the elders arranged a marriage for me?"

"You lucked out when he was sentenced to jail. But what happened after that?"

"Gaara-san and Yoshino were in my life. They are the real freedom fighters for reminding me of something important that I had forgotten about. You see, when I grew up, I was taught to pray for good fortune and stay as pure as a dahlia can be. But every man in my family grew up praying that I become their maiden, whether to themselves or their sons. And then, there was Neji-nii, who never treated me in such a way. It was his vision that we all helped realize."

"I'm gonna drink to Neji tonight. Not gonna lie, he was my second crush."

"I thought you said you might be leaving after the ceremony."

"I say a lot of things."

"Ino… I'm sorry about what happened to you."

Ino sighed. "The attack, was it your fault? If not, then why are you apologizing?" She lifted herself off the grass and patted off her purple skirt, before picking up the bag containing her Kimono set. "Come on, let's go get ready!"

.

Leaving their shoes behind, Ino and Hinata entered the left wing of the building. On the second floor, it housed small changing rooms with comfortable sofa benches, vanity desks, chairs, and mirrors, along with closet space to hang clothes or kimonos.

"Hinata-sama," Both Ino and Hinata turned. "Shikamaru is waiting downstairs with the priest. They're ready for rehearsals." The maid said.

"Alright, I'll see you guys soon," Hinata replied, while Ino disappeared into the dressing room.

.

Hinata headed back downstairs and entered the priest's room of prayers. A strong scent of various incense seemed to relax her right away. She joined Shikamaru's side, and settled next to him, as the priest resumed pouring them tea.

"How did it go with Ino?" Shikamaru asked.

"It went too well because she's a sweetheart." She replied with a smile.

The priest looked from Hinata to Shikamaru while sipping on his tea, his purple beads still in his hands.

"Are you both ready?"

"Yes." Shikamaru turned to the priest. "Walk us through it,"

"Very well. Every ceremony, just like a journey, begins somewhere. Today, we will commence that journey, outside the red gates. You'll be escorted to the ceremony room. Once I cleanse and ward off evil or devious spirits, the best man may speak. Afterwards, each of you will accept three servings of blessed wine, increasing in size. You will read your vows and exchange rings,"

The priest motioned to the props before him, as he spoke.

The two listened intently, as if they only had one chance to get it right.

"The priestesses will then present to each of you a branch, taken from the world tree that our ancestors had transported and replanted when we first settled in this village. You shall offer it to Kami-sama-"

"Sorry to interrupt. Hiashi-san requires your assistance for a moment. He asks that you see to it," A priestess said while standing outside the door.

The priest sighed.

"Yes, I'll be right there."

Once the priest took leave, the priestess settled next to them.

"I've seen many couples come through this place, most out of duty to their families, and not out of love." She said with a smile as she passed them a scroll containing their vows. "This scripture is only to offer guidance. Nowadays, you do not have to memorize them, as you may create your own vows. Do you have any questions so far?"

"What is the name of the deity this place was built upon?" Shikamaru asked.

The priestess smiled sadly.

"Kami-sama's name was lost to time, but her will still remain on this earth."

"That's kind of sad, that no one remembers her name… " Hinata said, her gaze far off for a moment.

"The priest mentioned we'll be given a piece of the world tree." Shikamaru said, and the priestess understood the question being formed.

"Yes. It must be done before we proceed with the offering, which may start whenever you guys are ready. We will collect the thoughts and feelings of the attendees, which Hinata-sama shall offer to the statue of Kami-sama. However, the offering itself is a private event between the maiden and our faith. But it is said that at times the statue tends to move or interact, and it's taken as a sign of good fortune and fertility. However, we aren't entirely sure if that is true, for we've never seen it for ourselves."

Hinata found her lips pressing tightly, trying not to make any comment.

Folk tales and rumors, how comforting, Hinata thought to herself as her eyes trailed to the red wine cups.

"Why is blessed wine essential for the ceremony?" Hinata asked.

"It represents the three things that brought the two of you together. For some, that's love, life, fertility. For others, it may be duties, family and contracts."

The priestess rose, giving the two a pleasant smile.

"I believe that's about it."

.

Hinata giggled as she strolled next to Shikamaru while exploring outside the shrine under a beautiful blue sky.

"Troublesome, must they take forever to get ready?"

"I won't fault you if you take a nap, Shika."

"Hmm, you inspire me with other ways to pass the time,"

Hinata gave him a look as he glanced behind his shoulder to see if anyone else was in sight. They had reserved the entire shrine for the day, for their private event. Nevertheless, there were priestesses out and about tending to the shrine and sweeping outside.

Hinata giggled when Shikamaru pulled her down to the grass with him. She laughed and tucked a small strand of her behind her ear right as he leaned down and kissed her.

"Bro, while I would normally be happy to watch an erotic play taking place at a shrine, I can't say the same applies to all the priestesses on site."

Shikamaru pulled away from Hinata and lifted his eyes.

Choji was standing over the arching bridge, dressed in a Kimono adorned with his clan symbol, as his elbow rested on the wooden railing, staring at them with a knowing smile. Kiba and Shino passed him, sending greetings their way while crossing the bridge. Shikamaru lifted himself off the grass to welcome them. Hinata followed, fixing her cloak, which now adorned a Nara symbol.

"You guys are here early," Hinata said, glad to see them all the same.

"We talked over the phone, and figured you would need some company," Choji replied with a kind smile as he moved away from the railing, crossing over to join them on the other side.

"Seems like we made it just in time," Shino began. "You two looked ready to consummate-" Shino was cut off when Hinata closed the distance and was shushed by her hand.

Bugs began to crawl from under his sleeve, flying away. Shino pulled away as though he had been sprayed with a bug repellant.

Kiba laughed. "Some things never change. Shino, how are you ever going to carry your family's lineage if you won't let a girl touch you?"

"Is Ino here?" Choji asked.

As a cue, Ino walked outside the building.

"There's your answer," Shikamaru said with a lazy smile.

"Shika, Hinata, it's both your turn to get ready next!" She called out, and Choji immediately picked up on her deposition and smiled. If Ino was happy, he was happy.

.

The group gathered close to the lobby after Yoshino announced Hinata was ready.

Light steps were heard around the corner, as Hinata walked down the hall and turned. Everyone glanced up the stairs. Shikamaru was so taken by her that he could not speak.

Hinata slowly descended with two Nara maids lifting the excess kimono behind her. She couldn't see much of a thing from her peripheral, as her white headdress confined her vision. Her graceful movements did not falter even with all the limited movements. She made it down the stairs, Hinata smiled and raised her gaze from underneath the white headdress as she reached Shikamaru.

"I would say, marry me, but here we are." Shikamaru said to her, making everyone around them smile.

A priestess pulled out a camera.

"Everyone, gather around," She instructed with a smile.

Hiashi and Yoshino took their place next to Hinata and Shikamaru. Hanabi and the rest had to find ways to fit in the frame, thus Hanabi ended up lowering herself to one knee.

"Go! I can't hold this pose any longer!" Kiba complained. But everyone seemed ready to break into a smile before the camera flashed.

Then, the group headed towards the exit, with Hinata and Shikamaru being the last ones at the door.

Shikamaru stood by Hinata's side, holding her hand tight for support, all the while Hanabi and Yoshino were there to help her step into her wooden sandals, her white socks poking through as they helped slip each shoe.

Up until now, the maids that had been holding her Kimono. They paused and let it fall. A maid kneeled in front of Hinata, manipulating the excess white fabric into a more condensed form, before showing her how to hold it.

Hinata took a step, holding onto Shikamaru's arm, as her other hand held the Kimono.

"Careful. Watch your step," Shikamaru whispered to her, patiently, as she held on tight.

She looked almost apologetic that she was making them lag behind as they walked. Still, Hinata was thankful the weather was on their side thus far.

.

Hundreds of people had gathered outside the red gates, as cameras were flashing from afar, from the hired photographers there to document their event which would go down in history.

His hand was on her arm again, and Hinata was led blindly, as Shikamaru continued to greet large groups of families and friends. Half of Shikamaru's thoughts went over all the steps recited in the rehearsal, as they made their way to Naruto. His best man sported a serious expression, as there had been a large crowd of politicians around him.

Shino and Kiba followed along their side, as Choji and Ino had broken off to mingle with other crowds, who were amazed that Ino had gotten out of bed when she should have been resting instead.

"Seriously? The groom needs his best man by his side." Sakura said, as she dived past the crowd, saving Naruto from having to give a speech.

"Thank you, Sakura." Naruto said, while holding her hand while they strolled towards the couple.

"Whoa!" Naruto said in astonishment as he breached Hinata's personal space, almost peeking under her headdress. "You look beautiful, Neji would've-" Naruto paused when Kakashi's chakra pulsed nearby.

Hanabi turned away from an elder, glancing in Kakashi's way as he passed her. Hinata clung tighter to Shikamaru's arm, bracing herself for their interaction.

"Nara-san, Hyuga-san," Kakashi said coldly as he stopped a few steps in front of them, standing tall.

Hinata lifted her gaze and their eyes met. The twitched at the corner of her lips, suddenly just then, she didn't look so innocent.

The wind picked up, whipping his silver hair in waves as it flowed under his Hokage hat. Watching the two from afar, Hanabi understood right away why it always looked like there was a dangerous conflict between them, the reason now very visible to her.

Hanabi walked briskly past a few elders to reach her sister, as it was obvious Kakashi was trying not to blow off in public, over yesterday's revelation. Her older sister had managed to bribe his advisor, bringing out a weakness in him, as he had allowed everything her sister had done, to slide because of who was involved.

Hanabi made it a few feet in front of Kakashi, smiling, forcing his eyes on her.

'Hi!'

Kakashi let out a breath and patted Hanabi on the head, before turning his eyes back to the couple.

"Congratulations," Kakashi finally said.

"Ah," Shikamaru replied, shaking hands for the sake of appearance.

Kakashi's eyes then shifted to Hinata to address her.

"Feel free to drop by for a round of Shoji should you find yourself with free time."

This isn't over, Kakashi's gaze communicated wordlessly

Hinata smiled sweetly nevertheless.

"Looking forward to it."

Hanabi wasn't sure how they were able to do it, the pleasantries while hating each other's guts. This world still amazed her.

"Naruto, what did those politicians say to you, back there?" Sakura asked.

"They seem to feel like we're a danger to them because of what happened yesterday… But then they were also complaining they'll be defenseless without us once we leave on our trip."

Kakashi tossed a look in Naruto's way upon hearing his reply.

.

"Cousin! Congratulations!"

Hinata heard Toneri's voice, as he strolled next to Temari, while Gaara led the way. She smiled right away when Temari reached out to greet both of them.

"I'm happy for you two." Temari said, squeezing their hands softly.

Temari probably didn't know how much Shikamaru had wanted to hear those words of affirmation, whether true or not. Hinata's gaze lowered back to the ground as she also suppressed a big smile.

"We'll catch up some other time, cousin," Toneri said, while pulling Gaara away, so they may greet the elders and the council next.

Then, the priest rang the bell, the chime bringing everyone's attention to him as it was time. He waited for everyone to settle in a line.

Shikamaru offered his elbow to Hinata once more, and together they took the first step past the red gates.

.

Hinata and Shikamaru settled in front of the altar, as dozens of priestesses placed red cups before the guests and the couples, as everyone took their seats.

"Where is Sasuke?" Tenten asked, next to Lee.

"He volunteered to stay behind the desk today and keep things running in my stead," Kakashi explained. Hanabi looked towards her lap and frowned, as Sasuke hadn't mentioned that he would be skipping out. When her hands turned into fists, Sakura tossed her a look and placed a hand on her lap.

'Are you okay?' Sakura asked.

'Yes.' Hanabi firmly replied.

The priest closed his eyes, seemingly concentrating on warding off something. He faced the altar, waving around a staff with rippling white paper attached. The priest paused and fell to his knees to pray before a large golden chalice, as the priestesses made their rounds to distribute blessed wine.

The priest pushed himself back up, turning to Naruto.

"Naruto-san, if you may," The priest said, knowing he had been picked as the best man.

Naruto stood up and took out a scroll from inside his kimono to read, but then placed it back inside, changing his mind.

"How's everyone!" Naruto said, immediately exploding with energy. "Let's raise our cup to this awesome couple, that never gave up, and viciously fought against fate itself to be together."

He aimed his glass at Shikamaru and Hinata with a smile.

"I would like to thank Shikamaru for giving me this opportunity. You see, growing up, Shikamaru was a person I looked up to when we were kids. He was lazy, yet he had all the cool friends. Why is that? I used to wonder. And then I noticed it was because he was the best person to be around. Every single time we hang out, he'll let me drag him anywhere. He'll always let me pick the place, what we'll do, the people we'll see, and what we'll eat. At the end of those days, I would return him home on a piggyback ride-just kidding on the last part!" Naruto smiled sheepishly as heard some agreeable chuckles from people who remembered how he used to be.

"But then Shika became an adult, probably before me, and I still continued to look up to him. Suddenly, he was cool, he picked the music we listened to, or the place, or who we'll see, and what we'll do, it was still fun. When he first told me he was in love with Hinata, he immediately had my support. Even recently, I've done things for the sake of protecting both of my friends, and will continue to do so, forever." Naruto said, his eyes briefly lingering on Hinata.

Everyone clapped, finally taking a shot of the blessed wine which had been presented to them.

"Thank you, Naruto," Shikamaru said with a nod, while Hinata smiled, as they all proceeded to drink blessed wine.

Hinata and Shikamaru gracefully faced one another. Taking Hinata's left hand in his, Shikamaru smiled in Hinata's way, his feelings seemingly reaching her. He didn't take his eyes off her, even as the priestess presented him with Hinata's ring.

"Hinata," He slowly slipped the ring. "We've already lived through our vows so much, I know them by heart. I have stayed by your side, under blue or dark skies. I have honored you and comforted you, and together, we naturally pushed through many obstacles, coming out of it, even stronger. There's been many sorrows as well as joys in our lives as we've lived in the same house and dined together. There's no going back, I want to continue to stay by your side, today, tomorrow, and forever. Naturally, I'll be your best medicine, and keep you away from troublesome sickness because I promise you we will always smile,"

Shikamaru said pretty words, but Hinata found her shoulder slightly shaking as she held back a sob.

The priestess immediately moved to Hinata with a handkerchief, padding her tears dry before they ruined the makeup. Hinata gently motioned for her to stop.

Hinata glanced down at the ring, before proceeding to take his hand in hers, after composing herself, while the priestess presented Shikamaru's ring.

"Shikamaru-kun, I hope you accept this ring as a reminder of our strong faith in one another. With you in my life, the skies are always bursting with bright colors, which is why I look forward to growing together and sharing more precious moments, even through tension. What you've done so far for us, goes beyond any of my expectations. I will never forsake you."

Everyone stood up to clap towards the newlywed couple.

Shikamaru smiled as he witnessed his mother with a handkerchief close to her eyes, while Hanabi placed a hand on her shoulder.

The priest stood up and walked to the chalice, lighting it up with a fire technique. Two priestesses came from behind, presenting them each with a branch. Hinata and Shikamaru bowed toward the priest and then toward the guest, turning to the chalice, and casting the branch into the fire. A reporter had managed to sneak into the ceremony just in time to snap a photo of them turning to one another to share a kiss.

.

Cameras flashed all around the dining halls, as the newlywed entered, holding hands. They settled behind a low table, where the closest family members and allies awaited them.

Familiar faces of businessmen and politicians made their rounds to the table, offering either a word of wisdom, a business card or a gift.

"Just say it," Hinata whispered to Shikamaru knowingly. "I know we're both thinking about it."

"I should've known it'll turn this way. Look at them, they didn't come here to celebrate. They're hungry for something else." Shikamaru said, while fidgeting with a business card in his hand.

"I believe today has been wonderful so far. Let's just say I know what I'm going to remember the most from this day," Hinata said while keeping her eyes on him.

"Agree." He replied with a happy smile as he took a sip of his drink, his eyes then drawn to a word Mirai had said while walking around the table, as Kurenai begged her to just sit down.

Choji stood up and paused behind Shikamaru, sitting down before the couple. Hinata and Shikamaru turned. Choji frowned, then moved his brows.

"Bro," Let's speed this up and ditch this place, and go to the venue and eat some real food.

"Troublesome… " Shikamaru replied, crushing the business card in his hand, before glancing down at the half-eaten wedding cake on their plates. "Mom. It's time for the offering."

"Thank you bro!" Choji said, gratefully.

As Hinata sat there, she wondered what had just happened, as they seemed to have had a conversation with just their eyes alone.

"I'll go fetch the priest," Yoshino said, leaving the table.

Hinata stood up, while her hand was linked with Shikamaru's. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her before letting go, smiling.

"I'm ready to get out of these robes and change." She said to the maids.

During her absence, the priest presented a clear crystal sphere. He handed it to Shikamaru, instructing him on what to do.

"When you insert your chakra, your feelings at the moment will be captured. If you wish, you may pass it over to the next person or guests."

.

Hinata reemerged inside the dining hall, in a red Kimono, the fabric decorated in flower prints, the Nara logo incorporated on the back. She walked past everyone and stood before the priest, who carefully handed her the offering.

The sphere, which was once crystal clear, was glowing; Swirling with shades of multiple colors. Hinata turned to the guest and thanked them for participating in the offering. Shikamaru kissed her forehead before she joined the two priestesses outside the door.

The walk to the ceremony room was quiet. She was led past the holy chalice and its never-ending flame. A priestess swiped her hand quickly, over the fire, and a trap door opened up. They stepped to the side, allowing Hinata to go alone, inside.

Hinata approached the statue of a cloaked figure, their hands stretched out, as if ready to receive something. Hinata's eyes trailed to the sphere in her hands, already suspecting something was off, as hundreds of candles burning around her, lighting up the room.

Not wanting to disrespect the new religion the shrine had adopted, she placed the glowing orb into the statue's hand. The statue twitched, and brought the chakra sphere to its chest, the offering disappearing inside its chest. Hinata took a step back, as the statue glowed, stone turning into flesh.

"Do not be afraid, my child, there are things outside this shrine that's scarier than a statue,"

Hinata recognized that voice. The cloaked figure removed its hood, long lavender hair flowed free as Byakugan eyes met hers. Kaguya's third eye, however, remained closed.

"I thought you were dead," Hinata said as she slowly backed away.

"Is that what the Hokage told everyone? You can't kill a Kami. My will still linger everywhere, inside of everyone. Come forward, to receive your earned blessings, little maiden."

Hinata turned away, bristly, walking towards the exit. The last thing she needed was the curse of a demon.

"How naive to turn away the blessings of a Kami," Kaguya called out, as Hinata tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge.

"Blessings?" Hinata paused the struggle and turned around. "All I want is a quiet, peaceful life, surrounded by my family, friends, and loved ones."

"I heard the collective thoughts of the chakra you fed into me, from everyone that knows you. You need me for longevity, and I believe you and I are compatible with what I have in mind-"

"If I send a pulse of my chakra, would you be able to fend off the same team that destroyed you once before?" Hinata asked, knowing Shikamaru, Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi, Gaara, and everyone were close by, inside the dining halls.

"Listen to yourself, child, making threats while relying on the power of others. When you deny me, you're telling me you're okay with the way things are right now. And I know that's not true. Let's make a deal, and we can both get what we want. Allow my soul to travel alongside yours so that I may experience life. As a reward, I can lend you my powers should you need them to protect your new quiet life,"

"No! I can't forgive you for what you did. You were the reason many people died,"

Neji-nii…

"It was not my intention to hurt the innocent lives caught between myself and my dreams, but that's how misunderstandings go. Perhaps, you should think about it, then give me your answer."

"Borrowing your powers won't do anything for the people around me. If I accept your offer, nothing will ever change. I won't change. I'll still be in the same situation, hurting others. And what's wrong with just relying on my husband and loved ones? My regret is I didn't listen to them more often,"

Kaguya levitated over to her, landing weightlessly in front of Hinata, one foot in front of the other. She reached out to grab Hinata's face.

As a last resort, Hinata sent out a pulse, signaling a distress call to anyone who would come. Kaguya's touch had paralyzed her, as she siphoned almost all of Hinata's chakra at once.

A priestess immediately opened the door and her eyes widened. Not knowing what else to do, she remained in place, shocked, before letting out a scream.

.

Back inside the dining hall, Shikamaru had been the first to react as he was quickly on his feet. Hiashi, Shino, Kiba, Naruto, and Kakashi quickly followed, with Choji, Ino, Sakura, Hanabi, Yoshino, and Tsume eventually following.

"Gaara-san, can you make sure all the guests stay put and away?" Lord Kakashi asked, not wanting a room full of witnesses, as he wasn't sure what was going on.

Gaara nodded, and everyone watched with concern as the group left through the door.

The priest had beaten them there, blocking the entrance.

"You may not enter. The maiden is in the middle of accepting her blessings. It's normal to sometimes see hallucinations during the process."

"Please step out of the way, that's my wife in there!"

Shikamaru apologized in advance, before pushing the priest to the side. The priest tumbled to the ground, the purple beads falling, scattering all over the floor.

.

Sasuke had been in the middle of signing off a mission report he had been handed, when he first felt Hinata's chakra pulse.

He glanced up, turning his eyes to the window, which faced the mountains. Sasuke pushed himself off the chair, grabbing his sword. Walking around the table, he opened up a portal to the shrine.

He didn't wish to suspect the worst, as her life had already been threatened once before.

.

Shikamaru reached out to Hinata, pulling her away from Kaguya's grasp. Everyone stopped in their tracks, witnessing Kaguya being engulfed in a flash of light, reverting into a statue.

What did they just witness…?

An illusion?

It must've been.

Ino finally moved when the priestess collapsed to the ground, from shock. She extended her hand to the priestess as she guided her arm around her shoulder, to support her weight. At the same time, Sakura went into full doctor mode, examining Hinata, in Shikamaru's arms, feeling her forehead as if testing her temperature.

"I thought your Goddess didn't have a name!" Shikamaru said, as the priest caught up.

"I swear, I didn't know it was Kaguya-sama under the cloak!" The priestess replied.

"Hinata-chan, what did she do to you, why can't you barely stand?" Sakura asked.

"I don't know. I think she tried to drain me of all my chakra, to stop me from calling for help."

After Sakura moved away, Hanabi approached her sister's side, with concern in her eyes.

"P-Please don't tell anyone of this incident since so many investors are here. Let me talk to the Konoha council about it in private so that we don't lose funding." The priests pleaded with Lord Kakashi, squeezing the broken beads inside his hand.

Hiashi and Kakashi shared a look.

"Lord Kakashi, it's obvious the shrine worships Kaguya. That's why they claimed her name was lost to time." Shino said, with his hands inside his Yukata.

"Did any of us actually even see Kaguya's body get destroyed during the war?" Where was she buried? Or was she burned? Kiba rubbed his chin.

Kakashi didn't indulge Kiba's conspiracy theory.

"From what we've just seen, she wants a host, and the shrine has been feeding her chakra. And I'm not taking any chances today." Kakashi then turned to the priest. "Did you know your religion might've actually been feeding Kaguya's spirit with power?"

"N-No."

"Naruto, destroy the statue." Kakashi instructed.

The priest let out a sob and collapsed on his knees as Naruto stepped inside the trial room, the door shutting closed behind him. Noises of explosions were heard inside the room, shaking the room, before Naruto stepped back outside, dusting off his Kimono.

Hinata felt so tired. Her eyes were heavy.

"Is it okay if we escort everyone to the venue, and then leave early?"

"Let's leave now." Shikamaru replied.

"Daughter, I'll take it from here, and give apologies to everyone on your behalf, for not staying."

"We'll escort everyone to the venue, just get some rest and get better," Tsume said.

Hinata blushed. "You know what they'll probably think if we just leave."

"Troublesome, if they're not thinking one thing, they're thinking another. I don't really care. Let's go home."

Hinata nodded. "But what about the group photos?"

"Oi, are you forgetting I can just share some of my chakra with you? You'll be fine, trust me." Naruto asked, shifting to sage mode. It's not that she had forgotten, it just did not occur to her to ask.

.

Sasuke walked steadily, holding his sword on his side as he passed several guests, as Gaara was stopping them from looking inside the ceremony room.

"Uchiha-san, I thought you were left in charge," Gaara said, finding his presence curious as the Hokage tower was left unattended.

"Gaara-san, let me inside." Sasuke requested, with a hint of urgency in his voice.

Gaara obliged, sliding the door to the ceremony room.

"Nara-san," Hinata didn't glance his way when she heard his voice, knowing it was her he was calling out to from across the room. Instead, she held on tighter to Shikamaru's hand.

Sasuke had gathered that the ceremony was done, he could tell from their wedding bands.

"What happened?" Sasuke asked, his voice low, as he approached the group, while Naruto had been in the process of sharing some of his chakras with Hinata.

"We're not sure if we even believe what we saw," Shikamaru replied, looking Sasuke in the eye as he emerged by their side.

Hinata eventually found the courage to glance up at him. Kami, it took everything in his power, not to reach out, and toss her into a portal, taking her somewhere far away, where she'll always be kept safe.

Kakashi pressed his lips firmly as he watched Sasuke steadily, with a measuring look in his eyes that gave Sakura a sense of wariness. Kakashi had always found it strange that Sasuke would engage in bribery when he could've easily just looked Hinata in the eyes and taken back his lands. It wasn't a bribe. Looking at them now, how had he never noticed their obvious secret before, which Naruto and Sakura seemed to know, Kakashi figured he had to get him out of there.

"Sasuke, since you're here, I'll catch you up on what you missed. We have bigger problems." Kakashi patted his shoulder for him to follow.

Sasuke's brow went up. Bigger trouble than yesterday?

"Where are we going?" Sasuke asked Kakashi, as he turned to follow.

"Some issues came up that requires the council and the elder's attention. It seems we can no longer approve of just about any religion that comes into town."

"Hn. That's not going to be pleasant."

When Sasuke passed Hanabi, last night immediately came back to him. Thinking about it in retrospect, part of him had a feeling that deep down he was never going to be able to get rid of those raw feelings inside of him when it came to her older sister. He should give Hanabi a proper answer next time.

"I simply do not understand marriages. How could a couple expect to completely have ownership over one another for the rest of their lives?" Kakashi said casually, his own version of a hidden test. He waited for Sasuke to respond, as laying underneath Sasuke's answer will be the actual truth.

"Monogamy clearly isn't for everyone."

Kakashi hid his actual displeasure upon hearing his answer.

"Sasuke, our village always had straightforward ways of doing things. We have to make sure it stays that way and continue to support the system by reinforcing it through our own actions. Besides, being single isn't so bad, don't you agree?" Kakashi replied, tossing a look over his shoulder when Sasuke paused, cheeks suddenly reddened as though he had been called out.

"Hn."

.

Time kissed the afternoon goodbye, as Hinata and Shikamaru were surrounded by those closest to them, with very few guests being strangers.

Her eyes sometimes followed those in the middle of the room, dancing in pairs, performing a simple traditional dance that was taught to them in school.

"Mmmm, this is delicious!" Sakura said while covering her mouth as she chewed. "Hanabi, Naruto, try it!"

Hinata watched with a smile as Hanabi seemed to be beaming with life when around team 7. Hanabi reached over the table and took samples from Sakura's plate, as Sakura served some to Naruto's plate.

"Oi, this is really fucking bomb," Naruto said, to which Choji agreed from his side.

"Best man, language please," Shikamaru said as Kurenai covered Mirai's ear.

Shuffling through people with pardons, Sasuke made his way to his friends while avoiding anyone bumping into him as they danced. Naruto and Sakura caught his silent greeting as he approached. He pulled up right by Hanabi, sitting in the seat he had assumed had been reserved for him. After the meeting with the elder, and the council, Sasuke had decided he would go to the venue, mostly for the food.

Wanting to share food with Sasuke, Hanabi turned slightly, moving her plate in front of him, not realizing he was also inching closer, reaching to take a sample. It was always Sasuke's nature to look a person right in the eye as he speaks, but given what happened between them last night, she wasn't sure she could keep her composure. Hanabi looked away, happy Sakura had spoken.

"How is it, Sasuke?"

"Hn. Something this good should be forbidden."

Hanabi covered her lips, as she recovered from nearly choking on her drink.

'Onee-chan, would you like to dance?' Hanabi asked, pushing herself off the floor pillow to take her hand.

"Sure, I would love to."

'I actually would like to speak to you privately,"

"Is something wrong?" Hinata asked, as they avoided everyone dancing in the middle.

'Yes and no… Let's talk outside.'

Hinata and Hanabi stepped out into the night, away from anyone who had been there taking a smoke break.

"Hanabi-chan, can I go first?"

Hanabi nodded.

"I wish to apologize to you, about yesterday, but I need to know what I did wrong," Hinata said.

'I was angry at you when it wasn't even my place to be. You see, I thought you wanted to destroy Sasuke's image-'

"Why would I do something like that?"

'Sasuke told us about the bribe.'

Us? Then that fight yesterday…

Hinata frowned. Still, Hanabi's reason for her animosity came as a surprise to Hinata. To think that something like that would set her off…

'Onee-chan, the truth is, I found someone that I like, and it scares me.'

Hinata covered her lips, smiling in surprise.

"Is he here tonight?" She asked, motioning back inside.

'Yes.'

"Do you think father will like him?"

'He already does.'

It took a second for Hinata to put two and two together. She glanced up at the moon, with a frown.

"You like Uchiha-san…"

Hanabi did not voice her insecurities about what she thought might have happened between them.

'Are you angry?'

"I made my choice, Hanabi. I'll see you back inside." Hinata said, keeping her eyes fixed on the moon, not believing her younger had essentially been asking for her permission as if it was hers to give away.

It hurts, she admitted to herself. But she loves her so much.

.

Toneri waited for her cousin to be alone, before approaching her.

"I must confess, I'm amazed by all the ways trouble seems to find you, cousin. I heard about Kaguya-san. Are you alright?"

Hinata glanced his way.

"Toneri-san…" Today was supposed to be about Shikamaru and her, yet for some reason she had been on a streak, bumping into so many people she had wronged. "I'm sorry about what happened before, please believe that."

"Ah, so Uchiha-san did deliver my letter."

He received silence from her side.

"Do not be sad, cousin, for I came to tell you Suna might've been the best thing that ever happened to me. There, I found what I was missing the most."

"And what is that?"

"Family, and love."

"Love?"

"Yes." Even with all the barriers down, he was still worried about what all their clansmen would think of him and his choices. "I didn't think I would find myself thanking you for-"

"Toneri-chan, there you are." Gaara said as he approached them with a smile.

"Gaara-san. I should've reached out and given you my personal condolences-"

"I have not come to talk about that, Hinata-san."

"Then have you come to gloat that you've won our wager?"

"It was a silly one at that, I can't believe how young and immature we had been just a year ago."

They turned around as Shikamaru walked up to them with a lazy smile.

"I was wondering who was holding you up." Shikamaru hugged her from behind, his hair slightly tickling her. None of that didn't stop her from noticing both of their body languages, as Gaara moved close to Toneri. Eh?

"I see," Hinata said, realizing what was going on. "Have you come to ask the elders for permission?" She asked Gaara.

"Not yet," Toneri replied. "It's hard to imagine that they'll agree right now."

Shikamaru hugged her tighter.

"Wife, we're expected to leave at some point. I would rather sooner than later. The celebrations can go on without us." He said to her ear.

"Alright, let's start saying our goodbyes," Hinata agreed.

.

When Shikamaru leaned in and kissed her, the feel of his hand on the side of her arm made her feel naked. This was more than just a goodnight kiss.

Hinata's intuition had been spot on, as she brought the hem of her skirt back down, in an attempt to stop his hand from further exploration, since they were out in the halls, back at home.

"I've already seen everything." He reminded her needlessly. However, that wasn't the issue at all. She protested that one of the maids' shifts was scheduled to start soon.

There were times Hinata didn't want to disappoint, and right then was one of them, as he seemed dissatisfied by her answer. He pulled her in for another kiss, his hands leaving her hair, and this time she didn't stop his hand. It was evident throughout the course of their intimacy, that her husband had gotten very efficient with his fingers, as Hinata's white lingerie was already rolled down, although one leg was still inside.

Hinata kept her back pressed against the wall for support, and a feeling of thrill rose inside her as he placed butterfly kisses. Hinata gently touched his shoulder when she heard footsteps down the hall. He burst into chuckles when he lifted her off the floor, before carrying her off into their room. The moment her feet touched the floor, she felt a tug at her obi, the gravity doing most of the work from then on, as her Kimono slipped off, while being kited towards their bed. Although he doesn't mind her white corset bra, or stockings still being on, Shikamaru helped them off.

Hinata glanced up, her heart speeding in anticipation, as she helped him out of his clothes, before he guided her to lay on her back, his body carving space between her, as he straddled her in the process. His hair hung down past his shoulder and appeared raven-like in the dim light. It had gotten long without her notice, as she had seen him every day for a while. When she hugged Shikamaru, his scent somehow drove her insane again, which might've been the reason why she expressed consent from the way she wrapped her legs around him tightly, inviting him in as he teased her with subtle movements. Ah, so this was it. To think that one of the things that once made her feel so valuable was gone within seconds.

She closed her eyes, letting a tear slip down her side for different reasons. Traces and images of the Hokage's new advisor surfaced at the worst time; Perhaps a wicked curse of his, done on purpose when he had entered her mind. Blaming him would be a lie. No matter how close they had been, she couldn't recall Sasuke's scent, yet she remembered him all the same; The feel of his touch on her skin as he carried her into the fire, caused pins and needle-like feelings in her heart along with shivers. What was she doing, thinking about this now? She opened her eyes, willing the fantasies away that had emerged from memories alone.

"Tell me, wife, are you a masochist or just impatient? You're not ready."

Shikamaru took in her expression, as she glanced up at him. Her lips bowed into a frown and Hinata shook her head.

"Isn't it supposed to be painful, regardless?"

"Is that what your clan said to you?" Shikamaru asked, mildly amused. "It's not supposed to hurt."

Her gaze trailed down his naked body.

"Shika, have you done this before?" She joked, but he seemed to take it seriously.

The question was easily deflected when he greeted each of her breasts with a kiss. With that one fear out of the way, anything Shikamaru did from then on seemed to burn a path on Hinata's skin as his hand moved down, until he teased her lower lips, causing her to gasp and melt underneath him. Her cheeks flushed redder, not realizing she was leaving half-moon prints on his shoulder as she kissed his neck, teeth biting down his skin.

He stopped, pulling his fingers out, and moved away to look her in the eyes. Her husband had sweetly whispered reassuring words, before kissing her. She moaned against his lips when the first gentle, half-thrust, tore through her walls. She bit down any parts she could access, muffling any cries or lewd noises against his skin.

Noticing what she was doing, Shikamaru collected her wrists, binding her arms above her. He could finally hear her clearly when she expressed how much she loves him, wants him, and needs him. Everything from her body, to her voice, was stimulating something in him. Feeling herself close, she broke free from his hold, tracing his figure starting from his chest, down to his sides, as each of his thrusts became consistently more powerful than the one before it, as her cries of pleasure seized against his kiss.

.

That same night, a cold breeze caressed her skin as Hinata stood outside the porch, her eyes fixed ahead as she stared at Nara forest. Shikamaru walked up and hugged her, presenting her with a shogi piece.

"Hinata, won't you join me inside for a game?"

He then finally noticed she had been holding a letter, loosely, in her hand.

"Who's it from?" He asked.

"My dear little sister. She says she's leaving tomorrow morning, to travel with team 7."

"Ah."

He never noticed before how her skin seemed to glow underneath the moon, as a few strands of her hair shone a pastel lavender against her blueish hair.
