Chapter 82 Shira in Jail?
On his way to the office, Logan got a call from Dillon. "Hey man, I just got a call from Paul. They are bringing Shira in for questions. Come to the police station, park out front and text me when you get there. I want to make sure she does not see you until after the questions." Dillon told Logan.
"No problem, I talked to Josh, reminded him not to represent Shira or Thomas Waters." Logan told Dillon.
"Good," Dillon said and hung up the phone.
Dillon led Logan into a room with windows on three walls. When he entered the room, he was introduced to Paul. Paul explained that he had Waters in one room and Shira in the other. There were several other officers in the room also. After talking with Paul, Dillon and Paul left to go interview Waters. Logan stepped back. He turned around and was looking at Shira. How did this happen? Karma's a bitch. He was wild and adventurous in his youth. This must be karma getting him back for all the trouble he caused. One of the officers tapped him on the shoulder. "Paul is starting" Logan turned back to the window that Waters is in.
He listened as Paul asked Waters several questions about his address and his job. Paul was throwing low balls. He was establishing a rapport with him. Paul was looking at his folders. He was taking his time. You could tell the longer it took the more nervous Waters got.
Dillon entered with Paul, but he took a chair from the interview table and put it in the corner by the door. He pulled a book from his back pocket and started reading. That is what it looked like. Logan could tell he was watching Waters.
Paul stood up, told Waters "Give me a minute" he walked out the door and into the watch room. Logan turned around and looked at him. "Just making him nervous. Going to turn the heat up in there before I go talk to Shira." Paul said as he adjusted the termisate that controls the temperature in the room with Waters. Dillon was still in the room with Waters, 'reading'.
Logan watched as Paul entered the room with Shira. The minute he walked in, she started questioning Paul. What was she doing here? What questions did he have that couldn't have been asked at her house? Paul never looked up. He came into the room reading a file, sat down, turned the page, and continued to read. After Shira finally stopped asking questions, He stood up and offered her his hand.
"Ms. Huntzburger, My name is Paul Edinberg. I am investigating"... Paul flipped through his file. "Oh, I am investigating trespassing on the property of Lorelai Gilmore Hayden Huntzburger." He looked up at Shira. "She kin to you? Your name is Shira Huntzburger, correct."
"Yes, I am Shira Huntzburger. I want to know why I am here. I was told you have some questions for me. Start asking your questions so I can leave. I have things to do." She told him.
"Ms. Huntzburger, I need to inform you I am recording," Dillon said pointing to the camera. "I have started asking questions, but you have not answered, so let me try again. Are you and Lorelai Huntzburger related?" Paul asked, looking Shira in the eye.
"No, I am not related to Rory Huntzburger, she is my son Logan's wife." Shira told him. She was holding his stare.
Paul nodded, then returned to flipping through the folder. "I see. That's interesting. Did I tell you that I am taking some psychology classes at the community college? My Chief thinks it will help with my investigating skills,"Paul told her.
Shira just stared at him. Paul was looking down at his folders when there was a knock on the door. "Excuse me. I must be needed in the other room. I'll be right back," Paul said as he stood to leave.
"Wait. I don't have…." and that is all Paul heard before he left.
Paul stepped back into the watch room. "Hey, just letting you know I am headed to speak with Waters. Think by the time I get back to your mother, she will have calmed down?" Paul asked Logan.
Logan was laughing. "No, she will be furious." He told him
"Good, that's what I am counting on," Paul said as he left the room to go see Thomas.
When he walked into the room with Dillon and Thomas, Dillon did not move, he did not look up from his book. He did not acknowledge Paul. Thomas jumped when the door was open. "It's about time you returned. I was told last night that you are taking out warrants on me. What are the warrants for? I was charged last night with trespassing. What other charges are there?" Waters asked.
Paul ignored Waters. When he sat down he put the folder on the table and looked at Dillon. "Logan Huntzburger is here to see you, Dillon," Paul said. Dillon put up one finger to tell him to wait and let him finish the line. He then took his book and bookmarked it with the cover and laid it on the table.
"Did he say what he wanted? I met with him yesterday. I don't have anything else to report." Dillon asked,
"No." Paul said. Dillon looked at Paul, then at Waters. Paul looked back at his paperwork.
"Okay, Mr. Waters. Can you tell me where you were Friday night?"
"I was out to supper with a friend." Waters told him.
"What is your friend's name? What restaurant? Can anyone verify your location?" Paul asked.
"Is it necessary for me to give the name of the person I was with? She does not want any attention brought to her at this time." Paul asked.
"Well, I guess you don't have to tell me." Paul said. "We can go another route." He thumbed through the papers on the table and pulled out some pictures. "Is this you Mr. Waters? He asked as he pulled out a picture of him in the yard of Ms. Gatherhine.
Paul studied the photo. "It looks like me, but I have not been in anyone's yard."
Dillon said. "Let me see that picture." Dillon got the picture from Waters and examined it. "Hey Paul, this picture looks just like the one I have. See." Dillon showed Paul a clear picture of Thomas Waters looking right in the camera. Paul made sure to hold the picture so that Waters could see it while he examined the photo.
"I want a lawyer," Waters said.
"Okay" Paul gathered up his folders as did Dillon. As they were walking out the door, Paul turned around and said. "A guard will be in shortly to escort you back to your cell."
"Wait, when can I talk to a lawyer?" Paul asked.
"That's up to the detention officers at the jail." Paul said as he walked out.
Paul and Dillon returned to the watch room. "Logan, I am going to talk with your mother now. Then I want you to come in. You can talk to her or not. I just want you in the room. Give me about 10 minutes." Paul told Logan. Logan nodded his head.
Paul and Dillon entered Shira's room. She opened her mouth to speak but Paul shut her down. "Ms. Huntzburger, If you could just sit down and listen. I just left an interview room speaking to Thomas Waters. Do you know him?" Paul paused. "Before you answer, he is now, at this minute, being escorted to a cell. If you have anything you want to add to what he said, now would be the time."
"I don't know this man," Shira said and crossed her arms. Paul pulled out the picture of Thomas getting in her car, then a picture of Shira in the driver's seat. He laid both pictures in front of her. Shira was sitting with her arms crossed. She did not look down at the pictures. She was staring at Paul.
Dillon cleared his throat. "Paul" Dillon began, but before he could finish, there was a knock on the door and Logan walked in. Shira turned to see who walked in the door. Her face froze, and all the color drained out of it.
Logan walked to the table and stood across from Shira, never taking his eyes off his mother. "I have tolerated you for most of my life. I have put up with the humiliation, with the narcissistic attitude you have toward me and Honor. I have put up with it because I have had a 'don't care attitude most of my life. The older I get, the less you mean to me. When I was first made CEO, I was concerned about what the board might think of me. I knew they were aware of my indiscretions in my youth. But I was determined to show them I am a different man. That was 8 years ago. In those 8 years, the only thing I have had to face the board with any shame is something you have done." Logan turned to look at Dillon.
Shira opened her mouth to talk, but Dillon told her "the best thing to do is shut up and listen. I am the one that has investigated and covered up some of your misfortunes. So I know you." Dillon said.
"Mother, I have a family now. I will protect my family with my life…." Logan sighed. "I am not sure what you think you could accomplish having one of your lovers run through my yard, but I am here to tell you, I Am Finished. I know you have heard this before. Your house is paid for. Your lights, internet, water, and garbage pickup have been paid for this year. You have until the end of July to have all the utilities changed over to your name." Logan said. He turned to the door to leave, stopping with his hand on the knob. "Do not contact me or my family. I hope you know what you have done. Honor is broken. She is horrified. She is ashamed. She does not know what to tell the ladies at the club. I feel sorry for Honor… I don't have to worry about what I will tell anyone that asks. I will tell them the truth." Logan opens the door, then he turns around, "You have a granddaughter that is due in July. I will leave it up to Rory as to what to tell her about you. As far as I am concerned, you are dead." He left through the open door.
Logan stuck around until Dillon came out of the room Shira was in. He and Dillon talked. He told Dillon to stay on this. "I want to know what she thought was going to happen. Was Waters supposed to harm my family or just scare us?. Find out for me please." Logan turned to leave. "Thanks, Dillon, and please tell Paul I appreciate the help". Logan then left the building to go to work.
