Chapter 23: A Tale of Fear and Thunder
On the Island of Themyscira, inside Epione's Medical Ward… but mentally, somewhere else… far, far away…
"Did you really think I was going to let you three fly from a fight you started?" Kal asked, using that same serious tone he heard Philippus use whenever the general meant to sound intimidating, which for the record, was a lot, it felt strangely right to channel his tough teacher in that moment, and so he continued. "Did you three honestly think that you could just invade my mother's island, attack my mother's sisters, then attempt to kidnap me, and just leave?"
Again, the Harpies said nothing, only glaring angrily at the boy who had bested the three of them, until finally Kal got fed up with their silence and proceeded to quickly grab one of Aello's remaining wing feathers by the bent tip and ripped it out, the Harpy crying out in pain as he did so.
"Answer me Harpies! Answer me right now or I swear! I am going to start ripping outallof your remaining feathers! He said threateningly at the now in pain Aello while pointing her plucked feather at both Ocypete and Celaeno in a very clear 'you two are next' manner. "One by one!"
Fortunately, the threat of further feather plucking seem to be enough of a motivator to get the Harpies to break their simmering silence.
"Well please forgive us, your majesty."Aello, the leader and the Harpy whose feather Kal had just painfully plucked out, finally spoke, spitting out every word with as much sarcasm as possible. "But we Sisters of the Storm were not exactly asking for your permission, nor did we need it in the first place, we answer to only one ruler, brat."
"Why we're you three trespassing on Themyscira and more importantly, why where you spying on me?" Kal demanded to know, ignoring the Harpy's insult, but still feeling his anger rising from it… as well as his internal temperature, strangely enough…
"As we told that bitch Hera before, we were sent here by our lord to retrieve you and we had no intention of returning to him empty handed." The one called Ocypete said, glaring angrily at the boy who had clipped her and her sister's wings.
It was then, that Kal remembered just exactly 'who' their lord was and after a moment of uncomfortable hesitation, he asked his next question. "And what does the King of the Greek Gods want with me?"
"Honestly, we don't know and we don't really care for that matter either." The third and final Harpy of the trio, Celaeno answered vaguely before going silent again, her two sisters strangely shutting up at that moment as well. "We had a task to perform and the Sisters of the Storm do not fail in their duties to their master."
"Well, looks like you three just did and for record, I don't believe you either." Kal said, glaring angrily at the trio, he could feel his temper rising and his body burning with anger at these Harpies who dared try and take him away from his home, his tribe, his family.
"Yeah, well, we don't really care, brat." Aello spat in response, her two sisters growling in agreement. "It's not for us to question our masters' orders, just as it isn't any of your business to ask."
"Well guess what Harpy, I'm asking and you're going to answer, you three must have some idea why Zeus ordered you to bring me to him." Kal said with angry snarl that was startlingly similar to his Krypto's at that moment. "And you're going to tell me, right now!"
At this angry outburst, the three Sisters of the Storm shared a silent look from where they all lay in the sand, before Aello looked at the young Champion of Themyscira with a smirk.
"You really want to know? Your majesty." Aello asked in a surprisingly pleasant tone complete with a false smile that quickly turned sinister. "Well brat, I'm afraid we can't tell you, but don't worry, you'll get to ask him yourself soon enough."
That first and final conversation with the now deceased Sisters of the Storm kept running through Kal's mind as he lay there in Epione's medical ward, over and over again, he asked himself the exact same, troubling question.
"What does Zeus want with me?"
Kal knew only a few things about the Greek God of Lightning and Thunder, mainly from what he had learned during Mnemosyne's history lessons on Ancient Greece his mother made him attend alongside his sister and her friends, it those library lessons where he had learned the most about the Greek Gods like Persephone, Hera, Iris, Hermes and most recently… Apollo…
Strangely though, whenever the topic Zeus had come up in the Historians lectures, it was always briefly and as straight to the point as possible, as if Mnemosyne and her assistants were eager to skip around the very subject of the Thundering King, as if she was afraid to even speak his name…
But from what little Kal had heard though, had not painted the Olympian in a very positive light at all…
Zeus was the King of the Olympians and by extension the rest of the divine races of Ancient Greece, the Ruler of Mount Olympus as well as the rest of the Grecian world below it and quite possibly the most powerful God in his pantheon, though that last claim was apparently disputed by the rest of his family from what Mnemosyne had told him in class.
In the time before the Fall of Ancient Greece, Zeus had slain Titans and Giants with his mighty Thunderbolt Blade during two wars and vaporised Telchines in numerous rebellions, he had summoned, vicious storms on numerous occasions just to spite his brother Poseidon and his sister Hera, commanded clouds to either save or starve the mortals beneath him at his whims, innocent people who were dependent on his food growing rain for their very lives, all the while lording himself over the whole of the sky itself.
All in all, the actions of an overly, proud and petty man who just so happened to be both a king and God, really bad combination there, in Kal's personal opinion…
…he was also quite possibly the biggest Adulterer and Philanderer in all of Ancient Greece, having apparently fathered at least over a hundred children on various different women, some mortal, some immortal, and more than a few, by rather unorthodox and truly despicable means.
Earning the Olympian monarch, the title of Father of Demigods, who sired the semi divine likes of Pirithous, Perseus and perhaps most famously of all… Hercules
Hercules… the most famous of all Demigods and the personal favourite Son of Zeus…
The fact that he had been nearly been kidnapped by the forces of the man who just so happened to also be the father of the Demigod who Kal was one day meant to slay in defence of his home and family, did not strike Kal as a coincidence in the slightest.
Which inevitably brought Kal back to the very troubling question at hand. "What does Zeus want with me?"
After asking himself that same question again and again to no satisfying conclusion, he asked the only other person in that dark place with him. That person being the spectral and formless figure whose voice he had allowed to guide him on this journey both with and now seemingly against the Greek pantheon.
"Rao… what does Zeus want with me?" He asked out into the void as he once again stood upon the surface of that ruined moon, looking over at the dead planet below and fading sun above, both so close, yet still so far away at the same time.
This time, Kal got an answer, although it was certainly not the one, he was expecting to hear.
"Zeus fears you Kal, and what you might one day become." Rao's wise voice answered, echoing back from the starry void, sounding as though he was standing right in front of Kal. "Not just to his son, but also to himself, just as his own fathered feared what Zeus would one day become to him, and as his father before him."
"Me?" Kal exclaimed in understandable disbelief. "But I don't understand, why would the King of the Greek Gods fear me?"
"Because Kal…" The seemingly omniscient voice of Rao paused noticeably, as if he were unsure about how well Kal would take his answer. "…you and Zeus are more alike than you know."
"We are"? He asked aloud, just to make sure he had heard the bodiless voice correctly, given what he knew about the Olympian king, that did not honestly sound like a good thing. "I'm… not so sure your right about that, Rao."
"I know it may seem hard to believe Kal, but I assure you, that what I say is true, you and Zeus share more in common than either of you would probably like to admit." Rao continued in that all knowing tone of his as Kal listened. "Both of you are the youngest son of a mother who hid you away from the rest of the world to protect you from those who wish for your death, both of you were raised on an island by people far different from you and both of you were trained since your birth to be a weapon of vengeance."
"So? Our origins are similar, that does not mean he and I are alike." Kal said, feeling as though he had to defend himself against Rao's claim, though not entirely sure why and choosing to ignore being called a weapon of vengeance at that moment as well. "I'm a good person Rao, and from what I've heard, Zeus is anything but a good person."
"Not anymore, no, but Zeus was once very different Kal. Like you, he was full of promise and passion for life and those he shared it with, he was destined to bring about a new age for this world, an age of peace and prosperity for mortals and immortals alike, at least… that is what his mother and her followers had believed at the time anyway."
"Really?" Kal asked with a raised brow, sounding more than a little doubtful of Rao's claims, but still willing to hear the seemingly wise voice out. "But if that's true, then what happened Rao, what changed him?"
"War, Kal." Rao said gravely from the darkness. "War is what changed Zeus, as it changes all of us who are unlucky enough to experience it, but still fortunate enough to survive it, just as it will in time, change you as well Kal, I'm afraid."
"Me? What… what do you mean?" Kal asked, more than a little nervously after hearing that rather dark declaration from a seemingly omniscient figure that Rao appeared to be.
"Do you know of the mighty Titan, Cronus the Cruel?" Rao asked and before Kal could even respond, he felt himself stiffen as his spirit was suddenly sundered away from this dark, empty, alien realm, to another time and place far beyond his reckoning.
He was suddenly standing in a what looked like a stone altar atop a mighty mountain, overlooking what was clearly the mortal world of Ancient Greece far below and briefly wondered if for a moment he was actually on Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek Gods before noticing that as tall as this mountain was, it was still connected to earth below and thus could not be Olympus.
It was then Kal realised he was not alone as the shadow of an exceptional tall and royal looking women came over him as she passed him by on her way to the centre of the stone altar, holding something swaddled up in cloth in her arms followed by a group of five other women, one of whom, carried a large stone with her, their female features mostly hidden by the dark, hooded cloaks they all wore, except for the glow of their purple eyes underneath their dark cowls.
As for the lone unhooded and uncloaked women though, just from looking at her height and divine appearance, it was clear to Kal that this women was not of mortal origins, no, she was most definitely a Greek Goddess, one he did not recognise from Mnemosyne's history lessons, though, upon closer inspection, he did notice several similarities between her and Hera…
"So fearful was the Titan King of the Fates of Moirai predication, that his own children would one day rise up against him, just as he had risen up and overthrown his own father, that it caused Cronus to turn cannibal in his attempts to prevent the prophecy, to defy destiny by imprisoning his own children in his cavernous insides."
He watched as this Goddess unfurled the top of the swaddled cloth, revealing the small, nearly hairless head of a newborn child, a boy, whose infant face was illuminated by a sudden beam of light piercing through the cloud covered sky above just as four of the hooded women began to chant a magical incantation.
"Little did the Tyrant Titan King know, that by attempting to change his fate, he would only end up sealing it."
Boom… Boom… Boom…
Suddenly, a powerful tremor rippled through the earth far below, one so strong it shook the very foundations of the great mountain, followed by another and then another. Kal turned his head in every direction to try and figure out where it was coming from and to his shock, his eyes locked onto a truly gigantic humanoid figure in the far distance slowly making its way towards the mountain, getting bigger with every humongous step it took towards them, said colossal steps were what was causing enormous, intermitted earthquakes. "Cronus."
SCREECH!
Kal looked up when he heard a raptorial screech and the flapping of large feathered wings as a huge golden Caucasian Eagle come soaring down to the mountain top from the opening in the clouds.
Upon seeing it land on the altar before the Goddess and her five followers, Kal was suddenly struck by a terrible sense of déjà vu as it looked briefly in his direction, he had seen this Eagle before, many years ago, when he was still just a baby himself, looking down on him from the top of the Themyscira amphitheatre.
"I know you?" He said to the Eagle who seemingly ignored his existence, no, the bird's raptorial eyes were focused entirely on the Goddess walking up the steps to meet it, the babe still asleep peacefully in her arms, with the leader of her five hooded cohorts following right behind her, after putting the large stone she was carrying, down on a nearby pedestal.
"First Demeter, then Hades, then Hestia, then Poseidon and eventually even your new godmother Hera were swallowed by their father moments after their birth."
"But when it came time for her youngest son, Zeus to be imprisoned, Rhea could not bear to watch her last child be devoured by her paranoid partner, so she hatched a resourceful scheme to hand her newborn babe off to her mother with the aid of her Telchine allies."
Rhea? Wait! As in Rhea the Resourceful, Queen of the Titans and Greek Goddess of Nature, Female Fertility and Motherhood? Kal thought as he finally realised who exactly this Greek Goddess was and who exactly the babe in her arms was as well…
"…Zeus." Kal whispered as he continued to watch this drama unfold before his young eyes, Rhea looked down at her sixth and final child with mournful eyes as the baby Zeus reached up at her with tiny hands, giggling and grasping at his mother's divine face.
The Goddess smiled sadly at this and barely bit back a sob before the lead hooded figure put a comforting hand on her shoulder and Rhea looked back at her, the two women exchanged a silent conversation as the mountain continued to shake beneath Cronus's approaching footsteps.
Pulling herself together quickly, Rhea hugged her third son to her heart one last time, wrapped him back up in the cloth before finally offering him up to the waiting Eagle, who inspected the mass of wriggling, wrappings for the briefest of moments before flapping back up into the air and swooping down again, snatching the bundled-up baby in its long talons with care to not actually hurt the child in the process.
Rhea stepped back as the Eagle soared back into the sky, her arms falling limply at her sides as she stared up at the great bird as it flew higher and higher, biting her lower lip to keep from crying, back into the opening in the cloud cover, which quickly closed after it, the magical enhanced light that had shined through the opening hiding the Eagle's presence from Cronus's quickly advancing eyes as it carried the baby in its talons to safety.
Speaking of Cronus, the far more immense Titan was now nearly at the barren mountain top, and Kal knew what he was coming for, as did Rhea and her Telchine allies, as the four other hooded figures finally ceased their chanting and quickly gathered around the large stone their leader had been carrying.
Kal couldn't see exactly what it was they were doing, but it seemed to be some kind of magical ritual, as when they all backed away, the stone was now wrapped in the same kind of swaddling the baby had been with an illusion of the infant's face cast upon its exposed granite surface where the head would stick out.
Handing the now enchantment covered stone to their leader, the four hooded women chanted something in some strange backwards language Kal couldn't understand, before amazingly, the four females became transparent and their now astral forms then rushed into the stone, the rock glowing as they all disappeared into it.
The lead hooded figure then quickly handed the stone to Rhea, before vanishing into it after her four sisters, Rhea gave a look over her shoulder, her humongous husband had almost reached the mountain top, the Titans power enhanced size blotted out almost half the sky as he came to loom over the small plateau, his thick-fingered hands reaching out to his more mortal sized wife.
Rhea hastily laid the swaddled stone on the sacrificial altar and backed away. She then watched as Cronus knelt, his immense hand closed over the altar and took away the stone disguised as his son. Kal and Rhea watched as Cronus held the wrapped stone up to his fearsome face, as if contemplating a delicate morsel of the finest food before opening his gigantic mouth and popping the deceptive delicacy into his massive maw.
Kal saw that the entire time this was happening, Rhea fought hard to keep from laughing hysterically, from crying joyously from doing anything of emotional notice aside from staring at the immense Titan towering over her, until Cronus finally swallowed, then Kal saw, she smiled.
A few moments later and Kal saw exactly why Rhea had a reason to smile, as her humongous husband began to make a loud choking sound in the back of his cavernous throat, Kal saw a look of discomfort cross Cronus's face, the Tyrant Titan King suddenly appeared very ill as he bent over and spat the stone back out onto the altar where it had previously been laid, it rolled off and landed at Rhea's feet, covered in saliva, and glowing with magical energy.
Immediately, the five hooded figures who were hiding inside the stone, reappeared from it, each one holding a crying babe in their arms, two boys and three girls, Rhea finally allowed herself to cry tears of joy this time at the sight of them, before nodding at her Sorceress subjects, who seemingly vanished into the colossal shadow cast by Cronus's face.
"Rhea did what any real mother would do, Kal, she protected her children and saved them from a terrible fate, but like with most hard decisions, it did not come without cost…"
Even as Rao spoke, Kal saw the awful realisation that he had been tricked appear across Cronus's gruesome face, before being replaced by heartless resolve and a fury that could not be contained by martial bonds, his huge eyes narrowed and the Titan snarled contemptuously at his traitorous queen, before raising his house sized fist high over her, covering her more mortal sized form in its terrible shadow and Kal knew what was going to happen.
He tried to stop it, he tried to run over at super speed to where Rhea stood and spirit her away from the rapidly falling fist, tried unleash Flash Flare from his eyes into Cronus's furious face to stun him, tried to summon enough solar energy for a Supernova powerful enough to knock the Tyrant Titan King off his gargantuan feet and hopefully save the Mother of the First Olympians.
But he could not move, he could not attack, he even tried to yell out to Rhea to run or fight back, but suddenly found his voice silenced before he could even attempt to form words in his throat, unfortunately for Kal, he was, for all his newfound powers and fighting capabilities, merely an observer in these long since past events, not a participant who could change what had already happened.
As Cronus fist came closer and closer, time seem to slow to a near halt as Rhea turned to look at him, and for the briefest of moments, Kal could swear she could actually see him, though she stood with obvious resignment to her fate, there was no sadness or fear in her eyes, only a maternal love as she gazed upon him, the same look he had seen upon his own mother's face when she gazed at him from time to time.
"Be the champion they need, my son." Was all Rhea said mere moments before time once again returned to normal and Cronus's colossal fist crushed his wife like the more normal sized Titan Goddess was merely an insect, the force of the blow shattering the very mountain beneath as Kal felt himself get thrown back through the air by the resulting shockwave and into another place and point in Grecian time.
Falling backwards, Kal suddenly found himself lying on the shore of a sandy beach, looking out over a beautiful sunset across a warm ocean, he sat up and shook himself off before looking around. Almost immediately, Kal noticed a rather uncanny resembles to this beach he was standing on and the one on his mother's island when he confronted the Harpies, if he didn't know any better, he would say this island paradise actually was Themyscira.
"After Rhea's death at her husband's hand, Gaia hid her grandchildren from Cronus's cruel hunger on her private paradise, the Island of Creation, where they were tended to by her daughter's faithful servants, the Telchines, Masters of Magic and Metallurgy."
Hearing the sounds of youthful laughter and children playing broke Kal out of his thought process though as he turned and saw a group of six children around his age, three boys and three girls, the boys were wrestling one another in the surf whilst the girls just watched from the shore, laughing in amusement at their antics.
In the far distance, Kal could see the same five hooded figures who had boldly rescued Rhea's children from Cronus's insides, watching over them, alongside them stood a taller, older looking woman with eyes as green as freshly sprouted grass and hair that resembled leaves.
Looking back at the six children on the shore, Kal noticed they all had different hair and skin tones, colours you would definitely not find among the offspring of mere mortals, but it was the girl around Diana's age with the lilac eyes and the dark purple hair who immediately clued him into this group collective identity.
"H-Hera?" Kal asked aloud in disbelief, as he starred in shock at the future Queen of the Heavens who sat next to her two older sisters, despite knowing full well who she actually was, it was still hard for Kal to associate the past vision of this smiling, happy young girl with the image of the adult stern Greek Goddess of the Olympian Pantheon he know knew.
That realisation made him feel more than a little sad to think about.
Neither Hera or her two older sisters responded to shocked outburst though, neither did the three boys who continued to play fight with one another in the surf, he didn't expect them to, just like on the mountain top with Rhea until what seemed like her final moments of life, Kal knew he wasn't physically there on that sunset shore with the six young Olympians, only being shown a vision of what had already long since passed.
"Demeter, Hestia, Poseidon, Hades and… Zeus." Kal said aloud as he did his best to successfully identify each of the five other Olympian children, finishing on the youngest, a boy who looked around his age, he had brunette hair with streaks of yellow like lighting and his eyes were a deep blue with an electrical glow to them.
Kal watched as the young Zeus formed a lightning bolt into his hands before stabbing it into the receding surf, shocking his two older brothers into submission with his electrical powers, before standing triumphantly over them, deeming himself the victor of their little three-way tussle.
The young Zeus then threw the lightning rod over his three sisters heads, the girls ducking to avoid it as it shot past them, their youngest brother laughing as they did so and Kal found himself frowning at the future King of the Olympians recklessness, a prince treating his powers like they were a toy to be played was very disgraceful in his opinion.
"You're going to hurt someone doing that, be more careful." Kal called out before he could stop himself.
His disapproval, of course, went completely ignored as Zeus and his siblings could neither see or hear him, but Zeus apparently heard something else as he suddenly ran off right past Kal and away from his siblings, who all seemed glad to see him go at that point and so didn't bother following.
"It was Gaia who protected Zeus and the rest of his siblings as they grew into grown Gods, Kal. Commanding all of them to avenge their mother's death and free the rest of the Grecian World from Cronus's cruelty, it was the Telchines who trained them to harness their Godly powers and helped each of them forge their own iconic weapons from the elements, but Kal…"
Rao's voice took on an almost ashamed quality to it as Kal found himself chasing after the young Zeus, quickly catching up to him as they reached a secluded part of the beach, where a glowing figure that Kal did not recognise, stood waiting with the setting sun to his back, clearly waiting for the boy, though with the combined glow of the sunset and the figure's own natural divine light, Kal could just barely see them, even with his incredible vision.
"It was I, Kal, I was the one who trained him, I was the one who encouraged Zeus take on the mantle of leadership among his siblings, it was I who helped him to defeat his father and become king… what a fool I was..."
Stunned beyond words at that point, Kal just watched as the boy Zeus suddenly aged into a handsome teenager right before his eyes as he walked towards the glowing figure before bowing to it like a student would before their master, he realised that was exactly what was happening as the glowing figure presented his pupil with a magnificent blade in the shape of a thunderbolt that just like the boy's hair, radiated with light and crackled with electrical energy.
As he turned away from the figure of light, Kal could just see the smirk appear across Zeus's face as he starred at his own royal reflection in the blades electrical glow…
"For in helping depose one tyrant, I just helped another rise to power..."
Everything Kal saw after that happened in sudden and quick succession, the now teenage Zeus declaring himself the leader of his and his sibling's rebellion against their father and his handful of loyal forces, challenging all five of his siblings to a contest of might to prove his right to be their king, a contest that he easily won thanks to his new Thunderbolt Blade.
Kal could see the same self-satisfied smirk reappear on Zeus face as he stared down at his five bowing older siblings and once again, found he did not like it one bit. "You call yourself a king? you take too much pleasure in submission of others, especially your own siblings, show some respect and humility."
But once again, Zeus did not hear his words and Kal watched as the scene shifted to a now young adult Zeus with his Thunderbolt Blade, standing atop the very same mountain where his mother had saved him and his siblings from their father, the same mountain where Rhea had met her crushing fate, the same mountain where Kal knew from his history lessons, that Cronus would lose the Titanomachy.
On either side of the young rebel king, stood his brothers and sisters, as well as several other young Gods and Goddesses, one of whom had fiery blonde hair that reminded Kal of the Sun God Apollo's light filled locks, all of whom were armed to the teeth with various divine weapons.
Behind them stood the five Telchines who had originally served Rhea, joined by even more of their kind now alongside a trio of huge Cyclopes holding hammers, behind them stood several Giants and even a few Titans as well, ones of both immense and more mortal size, whilst behind them stood the three legendary Hecatonchires, the enormous, multi-armed, multi-headed that even made Cronus's deity devouring grown height look small in comparison.
Speaking of which, Kal once again looked off in the distance to see Cronus's gargantuan form appear over the horizon followed by several other Titans and many far fouler creatures from Greek Myth, moving ominously towards the opposing army.
Looking back, Kal saw Zeus raise his Thunderbolt Blade high, lighting coming down from the darkened sky to strike it like a rod, before he pointed his freshly empowered weapon at his father's army and let out a mighty war cry that sounded like the roar of thunder as he leapt into action, followed by the rest of his forces.
Standing there, he had to admit, seeing Zeus at the front of such a large army of unified divine beings, leading the charge against his tyrannical father who had terrorised the Greek World for so long, being the one to land the first blow against Cronus's massive chest, leaving behind a burning scar was an awe-inspiring sight to see.
The sight then changed to what looked like the end of the battle as Cronus was grappling with one of the hundred handed Hecatonchires, whilst a helmeted figure that Kal assumed was Hades tried to restrain the King of the Titans with a large sickle attached to a long chain that he had somehow managed to wrap around Cronus's extremely wide neck.
Above them all, hovered Zeus, standing on a cloud, who stared directly down at Cronus just as he strained his neck to look up, both father and son exchanged hate filled glares before Zeus once again raised his mighty Thunderbolt Blade high, called down all of the power of thunder and lightning upon his father's fearsome features, clearly aiming this time to fry his face right down to his oversized, bony skull.
"From the moment I first took him on as my student, I knew his mother's death had left a horrible hole in his heart that no amount of vengeance would ever be able to fill, but I thought I could change him, heal him, save him from himself… but I was wrong Kal…"
Unfortunately, Cronus's saw this coming and managed to turn his head just enough against his rather formidable restraints to avoid the incoming lighting strike, the blast of electrical energy merely grazed his neck as it shot right past and struck the ground beneath him instead.
RRRRAAA!
A loud and ominous rumble from the earth followed in the wake of that strike, which was then occupied by the unmistakable sound of cracking as the ground beneath the three immortal's feet suddenly gave way, and in an instant, Cronus, Hades and the Hecatonchires all fell into the dark depths of the Underworld together, disappearing completely from sight along with many other divine beings from either side of the conflict who happened to be to close.
After the echoed of screams and falling rocks had faded away, Kal finally looked back to Zeus just hovering they're in the sky, staring down into the crater he had created that had taken his father, eldest brother and one his armies most powerful assets as well, his expression unreadable, Kal couldn't tell if the young king was feeling shock, regret or satisfaction from what he had just done.
"For even after winning the decade long year war against the Titans and securing his rule, Zeus soon found himself facing another war and even more rebellions from those he once Giant and Telchine allies, eventually, it all began to take its toll on his already scarred soul."
Zeus then turned with a savage snarl back to the rest of his father's forces and unleashed all of his thunderous powers upon them without mercy, Kal saw the slaughter speed by as Zeus shot lighting blast after lighting blast at either the defeated Titans or the fleeing monsters, the battle was already won and done, but it was clear Zeus wasn't finished smiting just yet this day.
"Every battle he fought hardened his hatred for his enemies, every betrayal sharpened his suspicion of those around him, every loss he suffered chipped away at his already fragile empathy for others and every kill he made removed a little more of his mercy for mortals, bit by bit."
Rao's narrative continued as Kal turned back and saw a badly injured Hades pull himself out of the great hole in the earth his brother's lighting strike had created, with the aid of his chained sickle and a cloaked figure holding what looked like an oar carved into a sword, they were they only ones to climb out though…
The scene then changed again as Zeus once again stood atop the mountain, this time all by himself, in what looked like some time after the final battle took place, no one else was around. no Gods, no Titans, the corpses had been removed from the battlefield, the earth had been cleansed of gore and the great crater where Cronus had been fell had been filled in.
All looked at piece, all except for Zeus, who stood like statue, as he waited for his former teacher to arrive.
Once again Kal had to nearly avert his gaze as the figure of light and hope from before on the beach appeared on the scene, standing before Zeus, he still couldn't make out much of his features, but he know knew it to be Rao.
He watched as student and master faced each other, Rao's unseeable, Zeus's unreadable, before the glowing figure offered his hand, gesturing to the Thunderbolt Blade in the Greek Gods hand, the weapon that had helped the Olympians win the Titanomachy, the weapon that had made Zeus king of his fellow divine beings, the weapon that could and had slayed Gods.
Kal saw Zeus hand tighten around his gifted greatsword, clearly not willing to surrender the symbol of his kingly authority to his old teacher, instead he turned away and looked at his own royal reflection in the blades electrical light… and Rao's as well as he came closer…
"Until, finally all that was left of the once great hero and promising young king I knew was an overly proud and paranoid tyrant, a bitter and petty man one who can only find comfort in the beds of unknowing women, is despised by those he once called family and who now desperately seeks to cling to what little is left of his power and his kingdom at all costs."
Like father, like son they say…
Kal could already tell what was going to happen and just like before, he tried to move, tried to yell, tried to anything that would hopefully stop what he knew was about to happen from happening, but just like last time, he suddenly found himself frozen in place… as Zeus turned and swung his Thunderbolt Blade at the very being who gave it to him.
AAAAAAHHHHHH!
Rao let out a roar of pain that Kal felt echo not only through his ears, but also his very soul as Zeus separated his teacher's offered hand from the rest of him, the severed appendage flew through the air before falling all the way down the side of the mountain.
Kal saw Rao clutch at his bloody stump just before Zeus moved in for what he was sure would be the kill, only for the once bright figure of light and hope to simply fade away with a flash before Zeus could finish him.
The God of Thunder let out a frustrated growl as he stared at the spot where his mentor had once stood before teleporting away in a flash of lighting while Kal just glared at him, a growl building up in his throat as he watched him go.
Looking back over the edge, Kal quickly raced down the mountain to see what exactly had happened to Rao's severed hand, with a combination of his Telescopic Sight and Super Speed powers, he reached the bottom of the mountain and located the hand in no time, just as a strange mist began to set in… but someone else had beaten him to the punch.
"Hera?" Kal exclaimed in surprise for the second time now as the Queen of the Heavens appeared through the mist in all her regal beauty, her purple eyes glowing in the low light, she had picked up the glowing hand before he could reach it and was now examining the severed appendage curiously, its divine glow illuminating her beautiful face just before its light faded away completely, leaving only a blackened burnt limb in its place.
Moments later, the hand began to crack and break apart, revealing a green glowing light beneath, much to Kal and Hera's shock as the rest of the appendages now burnt-out skin suddenly burst off, revealing a small collection of green glowing gems in their place… gems that gave Kal an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu as he looked at his wrists…
Because those strange glowing gems looked just like the pair of gems Kal now had embedded in his wrist bands… the very bands Hera had said she had given him when he was still just a baby…
Kal watched as Hera turned and walked away with her newly found jewels, the gems green glow illuminating her departing figure in the mist as the scene once again changed to one of Zeus standing with his back to him, looking out a window in what Kal assumed was the king's royal bedchambers atop Mount Olympus, a high solitary citadel that stood in the centre of the floating mountain, high above the rest of the world.
"That is why he wishes for Hercules and his horde to escape the Underworld, not only to spite his sister Hera by allowing his bastard son to ravage your mother and her sisters, Kal." Rao explained to him as Kal finally felt like they reached what was present time in this little vision quest they had gone on together. "But so that his favourite child may bring about a new Grecian Golden Age by force, to use Themyscira as the first stepping stone in taking over all of Man's World and allowing Zeus to once more rule over mortals and immortals alike from atop Mount Olympus, unchallenged and unchecked for all eternity."
It was night-time, evident by darkness outside the open window, even more so with dark clouds that populated the sky, Kal saw lighting flash across the heavens as Zeus just stood there, staring out into the darkness with his Thunderbolt Blade still in hand, his expression impatient and stormy.
Kal was momentarily pulled away from Rao's revelations as the click-clack sound of several hoofed feet approaching caught his attention, he turned and saw what looked like several creatures that looked like hybrids of a man and goat go skulking by.
Satyrs, Kal realised as he looked at them, it was his first time seeing these creatures outside of pictures he had seen in his history lessons, and much like the king they were now cautiously approaching, he knew very little about them, only that they were considered ugly and unnatural crossbreed abominations by most Olympians and Amazons alike… not unlike Demigods.
SSSCCCRRREEEEEECCCHHH!
Kal and the Satyrs all flinched as the screeching cry of the Caucasian Eagle reached their sensitive ears, just moments before the huge bird of prey came swooping into the king's citadel through one of the many open windows, large golden wings flapped hard as the Eagle circled the chambers before coming to land on its master broad, Aegis covered shoulder.
"Have Aello and her sisters returned from their mission yet?" Kal heard Zeus speak for the first time in all the visions he had seen him in so far and was taken aback by just how deep the Lighting God's voice actually was, each word sounded like the rumble of far-off distant thunder, but had an electrical spark to it as well that cracked like a whip at the end of each sentence.
For a long moment, no said anything, not Kal or any of the Satyrs, until the Eagle on Zeus's shoulder turned and gave them all the evil eye and another angry screech.
Kal winced once again at the unpleasant noise and the Satyrs all shrank back in fear, but after the echo had faded away, one of the Satyrs was pushed forward by the rest, falling to his knees before the Thunder God as Zeus finally turned around to look down at the terrified creature and Kal got his first real good look at the King of Thunder and Lighting.
Like with most of Greek Gods Kal had met so far, Zeus was extremely tall and possessed a powerful looking physique that you expect of a God King, one that surpassed even the likes of Apollo or Hermes, though his godly good looks where on par with either of his attractive sons, if not a bit more aged in his appearance.
The King of Mount Olympus had shoulder-length dark brown hair, a neatly trimmed brown-and-grey beard with golden rings, and bright electric-blue eyes, his attire consisted of blue and white robes with threads of gold through them, and various gold accessories from rings and bands adorned his muscular arms and legs, down to his sandaled feet.
"Well." Zeus asked again, a hint of an electrical growl in his voice, his impatience was clearly showing with the Satyr.
After a nervous swallow, the Satyr finally answered, keeping his horned head down and speaking in a language that Kal could not understand, but he guessed it was the creature's own native tongue, Zeus apparently could, as he listened intently to the Goat-man's words, spoken in a dialect that very few atop Mount Olympus knew, besides himself of course.
"What? Aello and her sisters, slain by Hera's child champion?" Zeus asked aloud, his face becoming furious as his voice became thunderous. "How is that possible? He's only a boy and yet he manages to defeat not only my most worthless son, but slay all three of my Harpies as well? How did he do it?"
Before the Satyr could even hope to answer, Zeus had bent down and grabbed the unfortunate ungulate by the throat, lifting the terrified Satyr off of the ground as his fellow Goat men cowered in fear of Zeus's potential fury, and Kal knew they had good reason to as the Olympian king brought the struggling Satyr close to his face, electric blue eyes glowing menacingly as he peered into the hybrids more horrid facial features.
"The Sisters of the Storm were among my most powerful and faithful servants." Zeus growled out into the Satyrs frightened face. "I gave those airborne Hounds enough of my power over the wind and sky to rival even my shrewish sister Hera. Provided them with an elite fighting flock of killer Stymphalian Storks strong enough to hold off any Amazonian army, and yet, somehow, they were still unable to capture one, single Demigodling and bring him to me, and so, I must ask you again, my snivelling little Satyr, HOW! DID! HE! DO! IT?!"
Kal saw the Satyr flinch in fear as the Thunder God roared into his face, his ungulate legs kicking feebly in the air and for the briefest of moments, Kal felt the slightest bit of sympathy for the horned creature as it barely managed to gasp out a response
"You don't know! YOU DON'T KNOW!" Zeus snarled, now seething with barely restrained fury and contempt at the pitiful creature whose life he literally held in his hands, as he did so, Kal could see the electricity begin to crackle along the Thunderbolt Blade's edge, casting the room in an ominous electric glow which Kal had to advert his eyes from-
-Only for Zeus to seemingly calm back down as he took a deep breath; his Thunderbolt Blade ceased its crackling and the electric glow faded away as he regained his kingly composure, Kal looked back and the Satyrs all breathed a sigh of deep relief.
But then Zeus chuckled, a chuckle
"Well, then." Zeus began in a causal enough tone of voice, but his true intentions were betrayed by the ominous smile that formed on his face as he spoke. "If that's all you have to report, then have no further use for you, do I now?"
Just like before with Rhea and Rao, Kal knew what was going to happen, and just like before, there was nothing he could do to stop it as the Thunder God turned around and immediately threw the terrified Satyr out the open window.
The eternal thunderstorm just outside the tower drowned out the Goat man's screams as he was flung to his death, but Kal could still just hear the bloody splat as the Satyr suddenly slammed down onto the Olympian patio floor below.
After committing this causal execution, Kal saw Zeus simply dust his hand off as it were nothing while his pet Eagle, Aetos, let out an excited screech and flew out the open window to feast on the free meat below. The Thunder God then turned his attention back to the rest of the Satyrs, who all shrank back in fear at his godly glower.
"Let his fate serve as a warning to the rest of you, I have no use for spies who cannot bring me useful information, now get out of my sight, all of you, before I send you all back into the Underworld pit where I found you!" The Thunder God said, finishing his command with a roar that was accompanied by a flash of lighting outside the open window.
Kal watched as the remaining Satyrs scurried out of the Olympian King's chamber as fast as their hoofed feet could carry them, not wishing to meet the same gruesome fate as their herd mate, Kal supposed he could not really blame them at that point.
"A pity, it's just so hard to find good help these days, isn't it Zeus?" A smoky and seductive female voice said from somewhere behind Kal, causing him to turn around in surprise.
Even with his incredible senses, he had not realised there was another person in the room with them, but as he looked in the direction of the king's bed, he saw a rather beautiful women laying there, her hand pressed against the side of her face in a bemused expression as she gazed at the angered Olympian king with blue eyes that glowed faintly in the low light of the room.
The women wore a green and lavender dress that was rather revealing in some places, or in most places actually, as Kal tried very hard not to stare at her rather voluptuous figure spread out on display for him to see, as young as he was, it was hard not to with a woman who dressed like that.
Instead, Kal chose to focus on her hair and face, which was multi-coloured to his surprise, her long hair was mostly a dark purple but had streaks of blood red running through it, like a mixture of Hera's and Persephone's, while her eyes were both blue, but whereas Zeus's electric blue eyes revealed his inner thunderous fury, this women's blue eyes hinted at her rather cold inhuman nature, they unnerved him even more than anything else.
"That is King Zeus to you, my Sorceress paramour." The Thunder God growled out as he glanced at the wicked women smirking at him from his bed. "Do not presume that even you are free from referring to me by my rightful title, Circe, you have not transcended to either Hecate's or Hera's position just yet." Zeus warned as he walked over to a nearby wine cabinet and poured himself a glass of Olympian Nectar from a vintage bottle.
"Of course not, my Mighty King Zeus." Circe conceded modestly with a complement as she watched her so called mighty king down two glasses of Nectar in quick succession, filling one right after emptying the other.
"I merely meant to point out that you put too much faith in the Sisters of the Storm to capture Hera's new champion for you, Aello and her sisters couldn't even handle Jason and his Argonauts, and they were mere mortals, not unlike Hippolyta's Little Fallingstar, the Harpies were not worthy of the second chance you gave them." Circe said as Zeus finished his third glass in a row and Kal could not help but notice just how quickly the Thunder God seem to have become stressed out, the divine beverage doing little to relieve his obvious frustration with the situation he now found himself in.
"You are… correct on that point, Circe, sending the Harpies to capture the boy was a mistake." Zeus admitted as he slammed down his now empty glass onto the cabinets top with a loud slam as he took a deep breath, before sighing in something close to relief as the nectar's alcoholic effects finally starting to kick in. "And now… they've cost me the element of surprise; Hera and her worshippers will not be caught unawares next time… and neither will that blasted boy for that matter."
Zeus then moved towards the bed and sat down on the end of it, his shoulder slumping as he stared down at his famous sword in his hand and for the briefest moment, Kal saw something other than thunderous fury flash across Zeus's face, something resembling… fear.
But fear of what?... Kal wondered to himself as he stared into Zeus frustrated face, before remembering Rao's earlier words, fear of… me? The boy pondered to himself as he saw Circe crawl across the bed and drape her arms around Zeus, her head coming to rest beside his as she began to massage his broad shoulders in a clearly amorous manner.
"Your so worked up about this boy, my king, and why?" Circe asked in a tone of voice that sounded both comforting and somewhat patronising as well, at least to Kal's ears anyway. "Because he butchered and burned a few foul birds? Because he made your brothers pet dogs roll over and obey him? I do not understand King Zeus, what has this boy done to make you fear him so much?"
"I do not fear him!" Zeus snapped irritably, his voice quickly becoming thunderous again as he turned to look at Circe, his eyes glowing an electrical light blue as he snarled at her. "I do not fear anyone, especially not that Amazonian Whore's Bastard Boy!"
Kal chose to ignore the 'Bastard Boy' label, but then quickly realised exactly WHO Zeus was referring to when he said the words 'Amazonian Whore' caused Kal to instinctively let out an angry growl in the Thunder God's direction, which of course went unheard by the pair of Olympians on the bed. "You're going to pay for saying that, Zeus."
Like before, Circe was not taken aback by Zeus sudden outburst at all, and merely raised a curious eyebrow at the king she currently had her arms wrapped around until Zeus once again calmed down in her embrace and sighed. "But I haven't waited so long for my glorious return to power to become complacent now, I will not have Hera's new pet Demigod get in the way of my plans for the restoration of the Greek Pantheon."
"Do you really believe this boy could be a serious threat to your almighty ambitions, my king?" Circe asked in adoring tone, but Kal could also hear the intrigue clearly in her voice as well as she asked the question, as if she was interested in such a possibility potentially becoming a reality.
"Hera is many things, but an idealist is not one of them. She would not put all her hopes and dreams in a champion who could never potentially deliver them, not with her worshipper's freedom on the line, it is the reason why she did not choose one of her Amazon warrior women instead." Zeus said vehemently and Kal could see the paranoia appear in the Thunder God's eyes as he spoke. "My shrewish sister would have never allowed the boy to live even a day on her precious Paradise Island if she did not think he could be of useful in her scheme to stop my triumphant return to power, nor would she have declared him to be her godson unless she sincerely believed he stood a legitimate chance against my greatest son."
"But just like before with that miserable mortal Jason, Hera is wrong about that!" Zeus announced fiercely, standing up and breaking himself free of Circe's grasp before continuing on with his declaration as if he was attempting to convince Circe, Kal, and himself of that fact. "She is wrong about her new so-called godson, just like the rest of my treacherous family members were wrong about their own pathetic champions when they sent them out to slay my son Hercules!"
"Of course, she is my king." Circe agreed in a comforting tone of voice, but Kal could still clearly hear the condescension in her words as well. "But still, like you said, the boy is a problem, one that must be dealt with if our plans for your triumphant return to rule are to go smoothly."
"He will be." Zeus said firmly, looking over his shoulder at the Sorceress on his bed. "Whether it be my hands or my son's, Hippolyta's beloved bastard boy will be captured, killed or turned to our side, Themyscira's new champion fail just like all the rest, I swear it."
Will see about that, Kal thought to himself with righteous anger after he heard the Olympian swear that, his eyes narrowing as he glared at the Olympian king before him who had no idea he was watching.
Zeus then once again moved towards the open window, looking out into the stormy, night sky, his previously expression becoming more thoughtful and troubled as he spoke aloud. "For centuries Circe, for centuries I have watched as the worship of the Gods waned after the Fall of Ancient Greece, I watched as one by one, the mortals forgot about us, they forgot to worship us, to honour us, to fear us." Zeus spoke those last words with a growl that was accompanied by a clap of thunder from the eternal storm outside. "To them, we became little more than man-made myths, overexaggerated legends and false idols, we became lies!"
Kal then saw Zeus take a deep calming breath as he seemed to struggle to keep himself under control, his melancholy being replaced with anger as he spoke again. "Then, I watched as my family, my own brothers and sisters, even my children turned their backs on me, betrayed me, united against me to reduce my royal power and authority to rule over them, to them, I was no longer their king, I was a joke!" This time, the Thunder God's words were punctured by the sound of lighting strike the citadel tower.
"And now, now they insult me to my face, laugh at me behind my back, and openly plot against me for their own gain! They forget who exactly it was who built Mount Olympus with his own hands! Who saw our pantheon win all the wars against the Titans, Giants and Telchines! Who it was who made us Olympians worth being worshipped in the first place and I will not tolerate it any longer!" Zeus suddenly spun around and Kal felt his glare falter slightly when he saw the paranoia in the Thunder God's eyes beneath all the pride and boastfulness.
Kal was finally starting to realise that the Olympian king was mad in more ways than one.
"I will see the mortals fear and worship us once again! I will see my traitorous kin get down on their knees and beg me for my forgiveness and I will see my scheming sister Hera be humiliated for the last time!" Zeus announced grandly, his electric glowing eyes looking wild with feverish energy as he spoke, barely able to contain his excitement.
"My son Hercules will make sure of that when the time comes for him to finally escape the Underworld, when he defeats the Amazon's prince and conquers their island, Themyscira will become his Barbarian Horde's new breeding ground and with Hera's worshippers enslaved, I will finally reclaim what's rightfully mine." Zeus declared, sounding ecstatic at the idea, much to Kal's growing disgust as the Thunder God continued to go on and on about his grand vision of the future. "I can see it know, an endlessly growing army of loyal male warrior worshippers that will spread my will across the mortal world with my favourite son to lead them to victory. I will bring about a new glorious, golden age for the Olympians, then return to my throne even greater than I was before as, not just as the King of the Greek Gods and Ruler of Mount Olympus, but as the eternal King of all Mortals as well and Ruler of the entire earth."
Even without the aid of any prophetic powers, Kal could practically see it as well and the dream of the future that Zeus was depicting was certainly not a pleasant one, for him, his family, the Amazons, the Olympians… or the world for that matter.
"Your insane." Kal whispered to himself horror as he stared up at Zeus's smug, smiling face with a feeling of true revulsion coursing through his system, even as he felt himself be pulled away from the Halls of the Thunder King and be transported back to Rao's floating temenos in the dark depths of space. "He's insane Rao."
"Now you see why Zeus sent his Harpies after you Kal." Rao said, his grave tone portraying the seriousness of the situation. "You know why he must be stopped, at all costs before he unwittingly brings ruin to this new age as he once did during his time and allows even greater evil to be unleashed in his wake. I tried to stop him once before myself, but I failed and now, sadly, that burden has fallen upon others… like you Kal."
Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 23: A Tale of Fear and Thunder, my retelling on the story of the six original Olympians overthrowing their father Cronus the Cruel within my own personal DC universe, please let me know what you think of it as well as my official introduction of both Zeus and Circe.
For added reference, just like with the cases of Hermes, Hera, Apollo and Athena, the design for Zeus in this story is taken directly from the T-Rexcellent Netflix series, Blood of Zeus, which I highly recommend watching, while both Cronus and Rhea's designs are based on their appearances from the PS2 game God of War 2, which I also highly recommend playing to anyone who has a PS2.
Circe, however is a unique case, as her design is actually a combination between her appearance in the TV series Justice League Unlimited, one of my favourite DC TV shows of all time and her classic comic book appearance, which is why she has a fusion of both dark purple and blood red hair in this story
As always, I recommend my friend and Greek mythology expert Luke5921 Superman story, Kal Son of Odin which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some DC elements added into it, so if you are a fan of both Superman and Marvel, which I AM and I know many of you are, go check it out, it keeps getting better all the time.
Also, if any of you would like to support my work in other ventures, I have YouTube channel under the same name as my fanfic account, T-Rexcellent Reviews, if you are interested, please consider giving it a look, a like and subscription as it would really help me out.
Now onto answering some more fan questions from all of you…
1. The Durdens Wrath - Hey youbreposted the whole chapter twice. But a good part.
Hello The Durdens Wrath, thank you letting me know about that double chapter posting issue for Unconscious Revelations mate, I was making some minor adjustments to that particular chapter and I forgot to delete the older version after I did so, resulting in both the new and old version sharing the same document when I uploaded it. Rest assured, it has been fixed now, thanks again for letting me know and please don't hesitate to let me know if some editing error like this happens again.
2. Savior16 - "Large white and golden Caucasian eagle perched on the statue of Apollo" ah yes, it's Zeus, typical Zeus.
Hello Savior16, and thank you, I'm so glad someone else finally commented on that plot point, also typical Zeus seriously needs to become something you put on a t-shirt.
3. Nameless hero 1128 - I think it would be cool if Alkyone while trying to prove her worth to her queen by killing Hercules before even leaving the underworld only to end up accidentally releasing him and pimp slapping Alkyone out of the way effortlessly like a particularly annoying fly and walking out of the underworld and leaving the queen's circle in shambles
Hello Nameless hero 1128, thank you for the suggestion, mate, I admit, it's a very interesting and entertaining idea with Alkyone being accidentally responsible for Hercules escaping, and although I do already have a plan in place for that particular event, I certainly will keep your idea in storage for future implication into my story, its way to good to let slip by, thank you.
4. Supabec - Awesome chapter
Hello Supabec and thank you, you saying that means a lot to me.
5. Guest - I do like the idea of Amazon being lesbians or asexual. Thank you!
Hello Guest and you are most welcome, though keep in mind that I did say that there are different preferences amongst the Amazons, as in despite their bad history with them, some Amazons still prefer men as shown with many of them having an obvious attraction to Apollo in chapter 19, while some prefer other women and some even like both, you will see cases of different preferences among indivuals Amazons as this story continues.
6. ManOfSteel - Great to see another chapter from Kal's perspective. Looking forward to the next!
Hello ManOfSteel, glad you enjoyed it mate, I hope this chapter was equally to your likening.
7. CephD - Is the superman creating flames a new super power you've given him in this story, because I don't think I remember him being able to do that.
Hello CephD, to answer your question, yes and no, Kal's fire fury attack while going under the new name of Supernova, is based off a more recent super power of his from the comics, his Super Flare, an explosive fiery ability in which he unleashes all of the solar energy inside body at once, its one if not the most powerful ability in his arsenal which like with most of his powers, will evolve and grow stronger as he ages.
