Chapter 52: One Step at a Time

Kyle yawned as he laid back on the couch, wrapping himself tightly in his blanket. He had been home for two weeks now. Things were slowly getting back to normal. He had been released from the hospital a few days after he was deemed ok enough to leave and he had an appointment with Jackson a few days later. He still couldn't really remember taking the pills. Bits and pieces from the night had come back, but a lot of it was blurry and foggy.

He had cooperated with the police investigation too. He told them who gave him the pills and what he had used them for. Just about everyone he came into contact with at Rocque Records had been brought in for questioning, the guys included. The investigation was ongoing, but Kendall, Kelly, and the guys were in the clear.

He was currently on a detox program with Jackson and Logan. He was doing this correctly this time to avoid withdrawal. Logan was administering his pills per his request. He kept the bottle at his house and came over before work to give him the Adderall. So far, things were going fine. As far as the treatment he was continuing his chemo and going to his therapy as able. He was working with Lindsey on his speech and getting his OT as well. James usually took him to his appointments, but soon he would be going on his own once he started back to school the next week. Maybe he would be able to drag Miles or Jared along. They had been to a couple sessions, but Logan wouldn't let Miles miss any more school.

Kendall and James were keeping him home. Leora was bringing him his classwork. They were keeping a close eye on him. It didn't matter much because Miles was over the second school was out. Jared wasn't far behind him either once he was done at the studio. They were always with him now.

Things were still strange. He wasn't sure what was going to happen with them. He just knew that he loved Jared and he loved Miles. He didn't want to lose either of them. Things with Miles were easy and familiar.

He looked up as Jared entered the living room. He gave him a quizzical look as he checked the time. He was surprised that he was here first, he was a little early, but not by much. What was really shocking was that Miles wasn't here yet.

"Miles is late," Kyle said slowly.

"He's not here?" Jared asked, his voice a little raspy, as he walked over to the couch.

"No," Kyle said. He lifted his blanket for Jared. Jared sat down beside him pulling him close. "Should I be worried?"

"Maybe a little, I don't think I've seen you without him all week," Jared said. He leaned in and pecked the blonde on the cheek. "I'll take it though."

Jared's phone started ringing. He sighed as he fished it from his pocket. He saw Miles' name on his screen. He handed it to Kyle. Kyle answered it.

"Dude! I got held back to talk to Mr. Harris. I'll be there in like ten," Miles said.

"It's ok Miles, take your time. Jared is here. I'm fine," Kyle chuckled.

"I know, but I didn't want you to worry. I'll be there soon," Miles said.

"It's ok Miles," Kyle said, "you don't have to worry. I am fine."

"Sorry, I do worry though. I can't help it," Miles said. "Anyways I'll be there soon. Want coffee or something? Ask Jared. Text me ok."

"Will do, bye," Kyle said as he hung up. He looked up at Jared. "Miles wants to know if you want coffee or something. He said to text him." He handed him his phone back.

"What do you want?" Jared asked.

"Just a hot chocolate," Kyle said.

Jared quickly texted Miles. He set his phone on the coffee table. He pulled Kyle back into him. He turned on the TV and put on some mind numbing trash.

Kyle's thoughts started to drift again. On TV they were watching one of the housewives handle a scandal she had been involved in and the media storm that followed. It made Kyle think of what was going to happen and the media really found out what happened that night, and then about his cancer too. Somehow they had managed to keep things under wraps so far while the police investigated Jack, who was now in custody and Jesse had taken off, and no one had heard from him.

"You ok?" Jared asked.

"I'm fine," Kyle said, nodding his head.

"You're being awfully quiet is all," Jared said, "you feeling ok?"

"Why you so early?" Kyle asked, changing the subject.

"Your dad kicked me out of the studio," Jared replied, "I'm technically on vocal rest."

"Vocal rest?" Kyle asked.

"Sore throat, can't really sing," Jared replied.

"Oh," Kyle said.

"M'fine, your dad is just paranoid," Jared replied, as he cleared his throat.

"Now that I listen, you kinda sound raspy," Kyle said sitting up. "Want some tea and honey?"

"What do you think I asked Miles for?" Jared asked, pulling Kyle back against him. "Now come on and relax. Let's enjoy the few moments we have alone."

"Right," Kyle said smiling. He relaxed against the older man again.

Kyle liked spending time with Jared. He didn't baby him. He rarely asked him how he was doing, and he didn't pester him about his feelings. Jared just spent time with him. He treated him almost like normal. There was still a bit of hesitancy about everything, but that was because of the new circumstances of their relationship. They were still figuring things out.

They struck up small talk about the lame show they were watching. They were laughing and making predictions about what was gonna happen. Kyle was gloating about being right when Miles arrived. He had a drink carrier in hand.

"Hot chocolate for Kyle, and tea with honey for the pop star," Miles said, "losing your voice or something?"

"Yeah, vocal strain is real and I've been banished from the studio for the rest of the week," Jared said.

"What did Harris want?" Kyle asked, cutting off the building argument between the two.

"To be an asshole, and tell me that I'm failing," Miles frowned. "I don't know how I've turned every assignment in that I missed and got decent grades on them. I swear to god he's like a secret inside joke fan or something."

Jared choked on his tea. He started coughing and hacking as he sat up. Kyle moved to give him some space. He patted his back.

"Thanks Miles, you discovered our true demographic, middle aged science teachers who hate teaching," Jared rasped with a laugh.

"I knew it," Miles said, pointing a finger at Jared.

"Totally, we've been discovered and the secret is out," Jared laughed.

"Now that he knows I think we have to kill him," Kyle said.

"No I can keep a secret," Miles said quickly.

"Sorry Miles, we can't risk it," Jared joked.

The three of them devolved into laughter after that. Soon their attention turned to the TV and the trashy reality show. They started arguing and trying to predict what would happen next. None of them noticed when James entered the living room until he cleared his throat.

"Oh hey pops," Kyle said sitting up.

"What's up?" Miles asked as he untangled himself from the blanket.

"We are ordering out. Chinese tonight are you two gonna be joining us for dinner again?" James asked.

"Normally yes, but dad said I gotta be home for dinner tonight since grandma and grandpa are arriving with auntie Presley," Miles said.

"Oh that's tonight?" Kyle asked.

"Yeah, we've got Lilly's room ready for grandma and grandpa and My room for auntie Presely and Lu and I have transformed dads office into a bedroom," Miles said.

"Lucas is still staying with you guys?" Jared asked, his voice raspy again. He quickly cleared his throat trying to ease it away. He grabbed his tea and took a sip.

"Yeah, he and Gerald had it out again. He tried making peace with him but Gerald still doesn't like Artie, which is stupid, because Artie is amazing," Miles said.

"Why doesn't he like Artie?" Jared asked.

"It has nothing to do with Artie being Artie. It's that he's got famous parents. Gerald is super protective and doesn't want Lucas to be in the spotlight and get hurt. He's been fighting that since the day he found out Logan and Carlos are our birth parents," Miles explained.

"Ah, I see," Jared said.

"Anyways, the usual?" James asked Kyle.

Kyle nodded his head. He looked at Jared. Jared shrugged.

"I'm fine with whatever," Jared said.

James nodded and left the room. Kyle turned to Miles.

"I really should get going, I'm surprised dad hasn't called looking for me," Miles said.

"Go, I'm fine Miles," Kyle said. He leaned over and pecked the brunette on the cheek. Miles gave him a smile before he left.

Jared pulled Kyle back to him once they were alone. Kyle settled against him.

"Not that I have anything against your dads, but when are they gonna let you out into public again?" Jared asked.

"Could be awhile," Kyle replied.

"I didn't get a house just so you and I could hang out with your dads," Jared mumbled, his rasp coming back.

"I know, but they are freaking out now, which they should. I didn't just attempt to kill myself less than two weeks ago," Kyle said.

"But you're doing a lot better, and the side effects are going away mostly," Jared replied.

"Yeah, the brain fog sucks like seriously. I still have trouble finding sometimes and it's the simplest things too, like this morning I couldn't even say toothbrush until Leora said it," Kyle said.

"Relax, it takes time to heal. You hurt your brain with all that medication and now it needs time to heal," Jared said. He cleared his first again.

"I know, I know but it just sucks," Kyle said leaning back into the older man. "Now it's like I'm a kid again and they are treating me like I'm gonna break at any second."

"They do it because they love you," Jared said, his voice breaking at the end.

"You need to stop talking, you're losing your voice," Kyle said.

"Ahem, I am not," Jared said, clearing his throat. He grabbed his tea again earning a laugh from Kyle.

"Thanks for proving my point," Kyle laughed.

He leaned over and pecked Jared on the cheek. Jared turned his head and captured the blonde's lips. Kyle relaxed into the kiss. They fell into the familiar rhythm they knew so well. Kyle shifted closer to the older man. Jared turned his head to the side.

"Stop," Jared rasped.

"Come on, it was just getting good," Kyle whined.

"Not here, your pa is literally two rooms away," Jared said.

"Fine party pooper," Kyle pouted.

Jared smiled and pecked him on the lips. They returned their attention to the TV. Eventually Marcie arrived with Jenny, Miri, and Kenny. Jenny and Miri ran up with Kyle and Jared with arms up. Kyle scooped Miri up as Jared caught Jenny.

"Well hello there princess," Jared greeted the youngest Knight sibling.

"Hey Mir," Kyle greeted, kissing her cheek.

"Ky!" Miri cheered, giving him a big slobbery kiss of her own.

"Jer!" Jenny giggled as Jared hugged her tight, before setting her down. She ran to the toy bin with Miri close behind.

"Sorry, your pa said to bring them in here," Marcie chuckled.

"Yeah, probably to stop us from fooling around," Kyle said, "not that we would ever do such a thing."

"No never," Jared snorted.

"Yeah, cause you're so innocent kid," Marcie laughed.

"I told you we should have gone to my place," Jared grumbled as he heaved himself up. He walked over to Marcie with a smile taking Kenny from her. "Hey bud have fun at the park?" He asked clearing his throat as gain as his voice because raspy once more. Kenny happily babbled away.

"As soon as I'm off house arrest, it's my first stop," Kyle promised.

"Losing your voice?" Marcie asked Jared.

"Nah, just a little raw from all the singing," Jared replied.

"I think he's in denial," Kyle laughed.

"So, are you guys ready for Miri's party this weekend?" Marcie asked.

"No, I don't want to be around people," Kyle said, looking away from her and Jared.

"Not ready?" Marcie asked.

"Not really, I get a lot of…of-" he paused as he tried to think of the word.

"Weird looks?" Jared asked.

"Yeah that, due to my con-condition," Kyle said slowly.

"Nice, you're getting better and besides it's mostly gonna be family who knows what's wrong and won't judge you," Jared said.

"I guess, but I also get pity for the other stuff and get…get…" he trailed off with a frown as he tried to find the right word.

"Coddled by relatives?" Marcie asked.

"Yes," Kyle said.

"Well you have cancer, of course they are gonna be concerned. Cancer is scary," Jared said.

"Yes, but it's still early.. and-and it only seemed to be in the one place," Kyle said. He paused, taking a breath as he gathered his thoughts. "It's gone and I am-am you know."

"You are in chemo, I know, but it's still a big deal. You need to stop pushing people away, especially family. We just wanna help you through this," Jared said.

"What he said, we will stand by you kid," Marcie said.

"Thank you," Kyle said, smiling at her.

He still struggled with his words, bigger words took more focus and the faster he tried to talk the more garbled his speech became. He had to take it slow and be mindful with his words.

Leora followed Artie through the men's section as he frantically talked about his and Lucas's upcoming anniversary. He was panicked that he was going to mess this up somehow.

"Artie, dude relax," Leora said, stopping him mid-rant. She placed her hands on his shoulder. Artie closed his mouth. "Lucas adores you and basically cut off his dad because he loves you."

"I know, but we've been officially dating for a year now. I want to make this special for him," Artie said.

"I'm sure you could take him to fast food and a movie and he'd be happy. He just wants to spend time with you," Leora said.

"Really? You think so?" Artie asked, his shoulders dropping.

"Yes, I know he wouldn't care. He just wants to spend time with you," Leora said.

"Thanks," Artie said taking her hands from his shoulders. He turned back to the clothing racks as he spoke. "I just…I want this to be perfect. We've been official for a year now. I know he's feeling pressure since we haven't actually…you know…and he's been hinting at it, but I don't wanna pressure him or anything."

"Wait," Leora said, cutting him off. "You two haven't…had sex," she lowered her voice.

"Not yet, no," Artie admitted. "We've fooled around a bit, Lucas is as innocent as they come and my dating history is a bit intimidating for him."

"History?" Leora asked.

"I whored myself out before. It was the only way I felt good about myself. If people wanted me that meant I had to be pretty and desirable. I still didn't feel at home in my own skin though," Artie said.

"Oh, I didn't know that," Leora said.

"Not my finest moment, but Lucas and I talked about it and he understands but I think he was a little intimidated," Artie said.

"Yeah, Lucas is like an innocent doe," Leora said, nodding her head.

"Oh my god yes, he hates it when I say that though," Artie laughed.

"But he is," Leora

"I know, just don't tell him that," Artie laughed.

"So tell me, what are your plans," Leora asked as they walked along looking at clothes.

"I wanna take him to dinner, nothing super fancy. There's that little Italian restaurant he likes down by the boardwalk. Then I was thinking maybe a walk along the beach," Artie said.

"Aw, how sweet," Leora cooed. "I know I just what to do!"

"Really?" Artie asked.

"Yes! Trust me, I'll make sure Lucas dresses appropriately too," Leora said.

"Oh Leora what would I ever do without you," Artie asked, slinging his arm over her shoulders.

"Panic over everything," Leora replied, elbowing him lightly.

"Yes you keep me grounded dear and for that I am forever grateful," Artie said.

"So, if you don't mind my asking," Leora asked slowly. Artie arched a brow at her. "Why haven't you two…you know. I mean you've been together a year now."

"I know, the moment just hasn't been right and Lucas gets in his own head. He's…he's a virgin and I'm not and I think that freaks him out a bit, even though he says it doesn't," Artie said.

"He probably doesn't want to disappoint you," Leora said.

"I know, and he won't. It's Lucas, I don't think he could disappoint me and I've told him so. I don't care if it's the worst experience I've ever had, the first time is always weird, but because it's him it'll be special," Artie said.

"Aw look at you being a big ole sap," Leora teased.

Artie's cheeks flushed pink as he looked away from her. "I know, but I mean it. I've never felt this way before, Leora. He's special, he's my one."

"Aw," Leora said again.

"He's met my grandpa and I told him about…my past. He's the only person I've ever dated that I've told that to since my transition."

"Well, I'm sure he knows that and just wants everything to be perfect, or try to make it perfect at least," Leora said, "I know I tried that with my first time, but like it was spontaneous and ok but it was with someone I cared about so it was special."

"Well the feelings are there and I'm not rushing it. I'm just letting things happen. I know it will and it's gonna be weird at first but we will work it out. I mean it's Lucas, he's amazing," Artie said with a dopey smile.

"Gross, let's go try these clothes on and make sure they fit," Leora said, shoving Artie in the direction of the changing rooms. Artie laughed as he allowed her to lead him away.

—Happy Mistakes—

Miles and Lucas watched as Logan and Carlos ran around the house making sure everything was in place. They had Miles' bedroom setup for Presely so she didn't have to worry about stairs. Then Lilly's bedroom was set for Joanna and David to use. Miles and Lucas had converted Logan's den into a makeshift bedroom.

"You know, all you gotta do is tell your mom that you're ready to go home," Miles said.

"Yeah, but it still doesn't make it right. I'm not going until he apologizes and agrees to at least meet Artie and get to know him. He's just being pig headed and I guess I learned from the best," Lucas said firmly.

"Plus you've got papi's genes on you and he's pretty stubborn too," Miles said.

"Exactly," Lucas laughed.

"Boys," Logan said walking into the room.

"We are done in the den," Miles said, sitting up straighter.

"I was gonna say that I am heading to the airport," Logan said.

"Oh," Miles said.

"Have you heard from Layla yet?" Carlos asked as he entered the room.

"No," both boys replied before laughing and turning to jinx the other.

"Logan, call your daughter. She's not answering for me," Carlos said.

"What makes you think she will answer for me?" Logan asked.

"Cause when you call we know we are in trouble," Miles replied.

"Yeah, dad never calls unless we are in big trouble," Layla said walking into the room. "I'm here."

"Where were you? I've been calling you all afternoon," Carlos said.

"I was out with Millie and Erika," Layla said rolling her eyes. "I knew what time I needed to be here, relax."

"Lose the attitude," Logan warned her.

"What? You never said I had to be home right after school," Layla said.

"Mija," Carlos warned her.

"Enough, I have to go; behave," Logan said, shooting Layla a look. She zipped a finger over her lips. "And please go cover up that hickey unless you want your grandparents to know where you were."

Layla's hand flew to her neck as her ears turned red in embarrassment. She ran from the room as Lucas and Miles howled with laughter.

"I hate this stage," Carlos groaned, "teenagers are the worst."

"Yeah, we can't even argue that one," Miles said.

"Would you rather have a toddler running around?" Miles asked.

"No thanks, I do not want to be Kendall and James," Carlos said.

"Nope, I'm good waiting for grandbabies," Logan said, shaking his head. "Give it a few years, you two."

"Oh, don't worry about pure little Lu here, and at least Erika can't get her pregnant," Miles teased.

"Yeah, and if you plan on continuing to see Kyle you might want to think about birth control considering his whole family just looks at someone and they get pregnant or get someone pregnant," Lucas said.

Logan and Carlos laughed at that as Miles floundered to find a comeback. He started laughing too, knowing Lucas was right.

"Yeah, I can't even argue that one, you are correct, I'm seriously waiting for Jake to say he's pregnant again soon, or for Kendall and James to have another," Miles said.

"Stop, don't even joke," Logan said.

"I was kidding," Miles said.

"I wasn't, you better be careful," Lucas said.

"Thanks for the concern Lu, but I can't, not after everything that…that Sandra put me though…I can't get pregnant or get anyone pregnant," Miles said looking away from the other three.

The room fell silent as MIles words hung in the air. There was lot that Sandra had done to him, that he hadn't told anyone aside from his therapist and Kyle. He spared Kyle the gory details, but Kyle knew more than anyone.

"Anyways thanks for bringing everyone down Miles. Shouldn't you be on your way to the airport dad?" Miles asked quickly, trying to change the subject.

"Yeah, I gotta go," Logan said. He left the room with Carlos following him.

"Miles, I'm sorry," Lucas said.

"You didn't know, I'm not mad, I'm not even hurt over it anymore. I just…just know that I can't," Miles shrugged. "Anyways, let's go bug Layla for details of her date."

"Yes, let's be annoying siblings," Lucas said smiling.

They took off from the living room up to Layla's room. She was seated at her vanity applying coverup to her neck.

"Oh Layla, darling," Miles drawled, walking up to her.

"What were you doing with our poor innocent Erika," Lucas laughed.

Layla snorted a laugh as she shoved Miles away from her. "Oh please, we all know Erika is far from innocent."

"Yeah, she's corrupted you," Miles said, jabbing playfully at her neck.

"Stop," Layla said, swatting at him.

"Spill the deets, were you really hanging out with Millie too or just with Erika?" Miles probed.

"Mind your business," Layla said glaring at him.

"Millie wasn't there," Miles said, his eyes going wide. "You lied."

"Shut up," Layla said, her ears going red. "Leave me alone."

"Ok sinner," Miles said, shooting her a look. He walked up to Lucas. "Careful she might lose it before you do."

Layla whirled around to face Lucas, her jaw dropped. Lucas' neck and ears flushed red with embarrassment.

"Are you-?" she asked.

"Thanks dude, let's tell the whole world how pathetic I am," Lucas said glaring at Miles.

"It's not pathetic," Layla said, "you should save it for someone you really care about. I just happen to have found her already."

"Oh my god, have you two had sex?" Miles asked.

"No, shut up," Layla said, jumping up and slapping a hand over Miles' mouth. "Don't let Papi hear you. He'll never believe me."

"How close have you gotten?" Miles asked, pulling a hand away.

"I'm not having this conversation with my brothers," Layla said, shaking her head.

"How about your big sister?"

The three turned as Lilly entered the room. She tossed her overnight bag in the corner and turned to face Layla.

"You made it," Lucas said.

"I said I would, this is a family dinner. Papi told me that you and I were roomies for the night," Lilly said as she sat down on Layla bed. "Now boys leave, girl talk."

"But-" Miles started.

"Get out before Papi finds out what really happened to his dressing room," Lilly said.

"You promised," Miles said, pointing a finger at her.

"Out," Lilly said standing up. She shoved him towards the door. Lucas put his hands up and left the room dragging Miles with him.

Adam's leg shook as he stared at his phone. He couldn't look away. He was waiting. Why wouldn't it ring?

"It's not gonna ring if you watch it like that," Cooper said as he walked over to him.

"It has to," Adam said glaring at his phone now.

"A watched pot never boils," Cooper said.

"They said they would call by the end of today," Adam said.

"I know, but you've still got a little while before the day is over. Besides, I'm sure you got the part," Cooper said.

"Not if they haven't called back yet," Adam said, shaking his head.

"I'm sure you killed and they just got stuck on the phone with the ones who lost and are now sobbing," Cooper said.

"Thanks Coop," Adam said, smiling at him. "You are so full of shit, but you know how to hype me up when I need it."

"Come on, the kids are napping," Cooper said, holding a hand out to Adam. "I'll take your mind off things for a bit." He wiggled his eyebrows.

"Tempting," Adam said. His next words froze as his phone started ringing. He looked down at his phone shocked.

Cooper sighed and grabbed it. He answered it.

"Hey Marty, it's Cooper. Adam is unavailable. Can I take a message," Cooper said holding a hand up to Adam. "Yeah, really?" he stepped away from Adam who tried to grab his phone. "Ok, yeah, I'll let him know and have him call you as soon as he can…Tomorrow?" Cooper moved around the table away from Adam who was still trying to get his phone.

"Cooper," he hissed.

"What? Tawni had her baby? Congratulations grandpa, yeah he will call you tomorrow," Cooper said. They said quickly goodbyes and hung up.

"Dude," Adam said.

"That was Marty," Cooper said finally allowing Adam to snatch his phone back. "Tawni had her baby by the way."

"Awesome and I'm happy for him, but what did he say about my audition?" Adam asked annoyed.

"You got a call back," Cooper said smiling, "it's down to you and like three other guys. He wants you call him tomorrow for the rest of the details, but he did say they were really impressed with you."

"Seriously?" Adam asked.

"Yeah, he said call him tomorrow though, he is leaving to meet his grandbaby," Cooper replied.

"This is awesome!" Adam said. He pulled Cooper close into a kiss. Cooper laughed into the kiss. ADam pulled back grinning at him, "Is that offer still available? Shall we celebrate the good news?"

"Yes please, I've been trying to seduce you all afternoon," Cooper laughed.

"Oh, have we reached the stage of pregnancy already," Adam teased.

"Shut up," Cooper said, his cheeks tinting pink.

"Come on, Coop, I'll take care of you," Adam said, smiling at his boyfriend. He grabbed his hand and led him toward their bedroom. Cooper laughed as he followed him.

Logan entered the house with his parents and Presley behind him. He was hit with the smell of dinner and the sound of laughter/arguing coming from the dining room.

"What are we walking in on?" David asked.

Logan shrugged as he led them to the dining room. They paused in the doorway watching ad Layla and Miles argued over place settings. Carlos was trying to defuse the situation. Lilly and Lucas were sitting at the counter talking and laughing together.

"Lilly, you made it," Logan said making his presence known. Everyone turned to look at him.

"Grandpa," Layla said running up to David. He caught her in a hug. Lilly was right behind her giving him a hug next.

"You are getting so tall squirt," David said smiling down at Layla, "I suppose I can't really call you squirt for much longer."

"Nah, she's still short," Miles called from his place setting the table.

Logan turned to look for Presley. He frowned when he realized she wasn't in the room. He quietly slipped from the room. Presley was in the hallway having a panic attack. He walked up to her.

"I can't go in there," Presley whispered.

"Yes, you can. I have talked with both Lilly and Layla. They still have questions, but we have all moved past that," Logan said, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"What I did…Logan…I was awful to them. I took them from their home and their dads. I couldn't see what I was doing then," she said, looking down at the floor.

"That was the addiction."

Presley's head snapped up. Lilly was standing a few feet away from them. She seemed unsure of what to do next. Logan didn't blame her hesitance.

"Lilly," Presley said softly. Logan felt her trembling now. "I am so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. You're right I was in too deep and…and…I messed up. I ruined so many relationships, and I missed out on the chance to get to know my nieces."

"Yeah, but you're here now," Lilly said, walking up to her. "The past is the past. Let's start over and help you get better."

"I don't deserve this," Presley said.

"You are trying to change Pres, everyone deserves a second chance," Logan said.

"I'm dying," Presely corrected him.

"Not on my watch," Logan said.

"Wanna meet Lucas? He's pretty cool," Lilly said.

"And Miles," Logan said, "he's…he's Miles."

"He's an acquired taste, and I don't think anyone has acquired that taste other than Kyle," Lilly explained, causing Logan to laugh.

"Kyle? Is that-?" Presley asked.

"One of Kendall and James' boys, yeah," Logan nodded his head.

"Oh god, I didn't even think about that," Presley said, her panic quickly coming back.

"Relax, tonight is family only. We can cross that bridge another day," Logan said.

"But Kendall and James are family," Lilly said, confused.

"Immediate family, they are extended," Logan said, giving her a look that said shut up.

Presley took a few calming breaths. She centered herself.

"Come on, let's go eat. Carlos made dinner," Logan said.

"Yeah, Papi's cooking is awesome and he was mindful of grandpa and made him something less spicy," Lilly said, making Presely laugh. She held her hand out to her. Presley smiled and allowed her to link their arms. "We've got to catch you up, and as long as you're willing to put in the work then so am I."

"You got yourself a deal," Presley said.

Logan followed them into the kitchen as Lilly quickly started to fill her in. She introduced her to Miles and Lucas. Layla's reception of her was a little less warm, but she was being nice. It was to be expected.

He ushered everyone to the table. Layla sat down with David talking his ear off. He was asking her all about school and her love life. He wanted to meet Erika like Joanna had while she was here last. Lilly and Lucas kept Presely's attention. Lucas was explaining how he had found Carlos and Logan to her, while Miles added a few of his stories in there too. Carlos was trying to keep Layla calm too and have her focus remain on David. He could sense the tension coming from her. Logan and Joanna sat back, watching everyone.

He had expected a cold reaction from Layla. She had been against Presley moving in. She didn't understand why Logan had forgiven her so easily, just because she had cancer? Logan had explained to her that him and Presely had talked things out. His trip to Minnesota had been about talking and getting to know her again. Things were far from fixed, but it was a start. He didn't expect Layla to forgive her without talking to her herself.

Once dinner was done, Lucas, Lilly, and Miles offered to clear the table. Layla ran off to her room, saying she needed to talk to Millie. SHe was gone before Carlos could stop her.

"It's ok. She's at that age," Joanna assured Carlos.

"Yeah, now you guys go get settled," Lilly said.

"Yeah, we got this," Miles said, ushering everyone from the kitchen.

Logan stood and led his parents and Presley from the kitchen. He showed them to their rooms. David and Joanna gave slight protest about putting Miles and Lucas out, but Logan assured them it was fine. He then took Presely up to Lilly's room and helped her get settled.

Logan hung back with her while Carlos went to check on the kids in the kitchen. Presley sat down on the bed. SHe looked down at her hands, as she picked a loose seam on her sweater sleeve.

"She hates me doesn't she," Presley asked softly.

"I don't know," Logan admitted as he sat down beside her. "She had nightmares for months after everything went down."

"I'm sorry," Presley said.

"She was even scared of Kendall and James for while," Logan said. Presley looked up at him shocked. "She was scared that they were gonna take her away too. Eventually, they promised her that they would never take her like that. She never stayed overnight like Lilly did until she was much older. She was traumatized Pres, this isn't going to be an easy thing for her to move on from."

"I know, I just…I am so sorry," Presley said.

"Just give her some time," Logan said. Presley nodded her head. "You get settled in. I'll be downstairs if you need anything." He gave her a side hug before he left.

Kendall carefully placed Jenny down in her playpen. She had been sleeping there ever since Kyle and Leora separated rooms. He smiled down at the toddler. She was a handful at times, but he wouldn't change a thing. She was growing so fast and becoming her own little person pushing boundaries and testing everyone's patience.

He smiled as she rubbed at her nose, before rolling over. He waited until she relaxed again, her soft snores filling the room.

His mind wandered to his other children. He missed when they were all this little. He did have to admit though, having one toddler was nicer than having two running around reeking havoc. Jake and Adam had fought like cats and dogs at this age. Jake had been so jealous of his brother it was ridiculous. Then there had been Kyle and Leora, partners in crime since day one. They had always been plotting against him and James. It had been an interesting challenge for them. Now all they had was Jenny, sure she had Miri, but she left at night. She left with Adam and Cooper.

"She's not as evil when she's sleeping," James said softly. He stopped beside the blonde with a grin.

"Nah, it's just the terrible twos, it will pass," Kendall said waving his hand.

"I can't wait for the toddler stage to be over," James said.

"I think I'm gonna miss it," Kendall admitted as he walked over to the dresser. He started to strip down for bed.

"But we will have more grandkids sooner or later. You'll get your fill," James said, nudging the blonde as he followed his lead, getting ready for bed.

"Yeah, you're right," Kendall chuckled, "knowing Adam and Cooper I'm sure there will be plenty of grandkids to spoil."

"Exactly," James replied.

Kendall climbed into bed. He looked over at Jenny once more. Everyday was a new adventure with her. She was exploring the world and learning her place. He was missing so much of it.

"I know that look," James said slowly as he climbed into bed as well.

"What look?" Kendall asked confused.

"We are done with kids," James said quickly.

"What? No," Kendall said quickly shaking his head, "I know we are. I was just…I was thinking about how Jake and Adam had each other and Kyle and Leora too, but poor Jenny is all on her own."

"She's got Miri," James said.

"That's not the same," Kendall chuckled. "I am just glad we only have one toddler to chanse this time."

"Oh I know what you mean," James laughed, "Kyle and Leora were a nightmare to chanse around. I swea they communicated in their own language and plotted against us."

"I'm sure they did," Kendall said. He scooted closer to James. He pulled him close. "I miss those days, but at the same time I don't."

"I know what you mean," James said, "look at Kyle and Leora now. They are eighteen and almost graduating high school."

"How did that happen so fast?" Kendall asked.

"I know it just flew by," James said.

"Before we know it Jenny will be all grown up and on her own," Kendall said.

"No, don't say that. I'm in denial," James said, turning in the blonde embrace to face him. "She's gonna be little for a very long time."

"I hope so," Kendall said.

-Happy Mistakes-

Miles sighed as he looked up at the ceiling. He had counted the dots above his head a hundred times already. His mind was racing and wouldn't stop.

His thoughts turned to Kyle, as they often did lately. Now that everyone was in bed, he didn't have a distraction. Lately it seemed like his whole world revolved around Kyle. He was always over there to check on him. He went to as many treatments and therpay appointments as he could, so that he could help Kyle. Recovery was his numberone goal right now. Get Kyle to the finish line, fix his brain and kick cnacer's butt. That was the goal.

However, it seemed that was all he did lately. He barely saw Lucas outside of being at home with him for the few minutes he was here, and rarely at school anymore as Lucas hung out with Leora and she wanted nothing to do with Miles yet. Carlos and Logan were making him come home more often too. They weren't giving him a choice much anymore. He hadn't picked on Layla in days before tonight. He hardly saw his family anymore.

Was this healthy?

Kyle was his best friend first and foremost. They had known each other since kindergarten. They were each other's ride or die. There was no question about that. He knew Kyle's deepest darkert secrets and Kyle knew his. Would he still be as dedicated to helping Kyle, if they hadn't started this new relationship?

Miles brought his hands up to his face, pressing his palms to his eyes. He couldn't believe this was even an option. Of course he would be by Kyle's side.

"Will stop thinking so loud," Lucas asked, startling him.

"Oh, are you awake?" Miles asked rolling onto his side. Lucas was facing him from his own bed.

"Who can sleep with you making all that noise over there," Lucas asked annoyed.

"Oh, sorry," Miles apologized.

"Whats on your mind?" Lucas asked.

"Huh?"

"Oh come on, something's bugging you," Lucas said sitting up.

"It's nothing," Miles said rolling onto his back.

"Miles do I look stupid? You've been sighing and tossing and turning for over two hours," Lucas said.

"Sorry just…thinking is all," Miles said.

"You ok?" Lucas asked leaning over. He nudged Miles. "You can unload on my if you want. I'm a good listener, or so Artie says."

"It's just everything with Kyle," Miles sighed.

"Yeah, it sucks," Lucas said, "how is he doing? I wanna visit but like I don't want him to think I pity him, he's…"

"I know what you mean. He's been trying to stop the pity party ever since he left the hospital, but you should come with and hang out one of these days. I am sure he'd love the company, since he is stuck at home, but like don't give him the pity eyes for sure. He hates that," Miles said.

"Right, he's too proud to admit he needs help or might even be the slightest bit weak," Lucas said.

"Thank you, at least I'm not the only one who sees it," Miles said.

"No, we all see it, but it is who he is and it usually works for him," Lucas said waving a hand.

"Yeah, that is just who Kyle is," Miles said with a small smile.

Lucas was right, Kyle was too proud to ever admit defeat. He would plaster a brave face on and fool the world. There were few people who could see through that mask. Miles was probably the best at it. Jared was getting pretty good too. Kendall and James were the masters, as Miles was sure that Kendall taught him and James could read Kendall like a book.

"What aren't you saying?" Lucas asked.

"What do you mean?" Miles asked confused. Was Lucas able to read him? Had he become that perdicatble.

"You've been tossing and turning for almost two hours Miles, come on," Lucas said, giving him a look that said don't mess with me.

"It's nothing, just me being me and in my own head again," Miles replied.

Lucas opened his mouth to question further when a scream was heard from upstairs. They shared a look before Miles bolted from the room leaving Lucas behind. He knew it would take him a minute to get his prosthetic back on.

Miles made his way up the stairs as Joanna and David exited his room, having heard the scream. He reached the top of the stairs as Carlos and Logan ran into Layla's room with Presley standing in the doorway of Lilly's room. Miles followed them.

Layla was sitting up in bed in a panic. Miles did a quick scan of the room and saw nothing out of place. Lilly was sitting on the edge of the bed away from Layla as Carlos pulled her into a hug as she cried in spanish to him.

"Nightmare?" Logan asked softly as he sat down on her other side.

Layla clung to Carlos crying. Carlos held her tighter. Miles was able to follow along with her rambling. She was talking about a crazy lady trying to take her away, again. She didn't want to go. She wanted to stay. Make the crazy lady go away.

"Maybe me coming here wasn't such a good idea."

Miles turned to see Presley had followed him. She turned and left the room.

"Pres," Logan called, he paused and looked to Carlos who waved him on. Logan followed her out the door.

Miles crossed the room he sat down beside Layla. "Flashback nightmares are the worst." he said.

Layla looked over at him, her breathing was finally calming down.

"I get them too, not as often as I used to, but the best way to get over them is to remind yourself of what's real. Just breathe and think about all the good things," Miles said, "like Erika and how awesome she is, or dad and papi, they would never let anyone take you ever again. Or your awesome brother-"

"Lucas?" Layla asked, with a small hint of humor in her voice.

"Yeah, he's pretty cool," Miles laughed, "you've also got me and Lilly. We wouldn't let anyone touch you. You may be an annoying pest, but your our annoying pest."

"Yeah and your our obnoxious loser," Layla quipped back at him, a small smile forming on her lips.

"Damn right I am, and you guys can't not claim me either, we had a DNA test done," Miles said jumping up.

"Sadly," Lilly said shaking her head.

"Oh you love me," Miles said pointing a finger at her.

"Miles," Layla said getting his attention again.

Miles whirled around to face her. She stood and wordlessly pulled him into a hug. Miles hugged her back. He had done his job as big brother right.

—Happy Mistakes—

James groaned as he stood up. He had just emptied his entire stomach into the toilet. Something with that Chinese food from last night didn't sit right with him. He grabbed his toothbrush.

He was almost done when Kendall entered the bathroom heading for the shower.

"Early morning?" Kendall asked as he started the shower.

"Yeah, I just wanted to get a jump on the day," James said.

"Well, Jenny is still sleeping. Leora is up making breakfast. She said Kyle was up puking again early this morning and he's sleeping now," Kendall said.

"Must've been the food on top of his chemo," James said.

"Probably," Kendall agreed.

"Doesn't he have chemo today?" James asked.

"Yeah, that's why I didn't wake him up," Kendall replied.

"Right," James said, nodding his head.

"I'll help Le get breakfast ready," James said.

"Not gonna shower with me?" Kendall asked arching an eyebrow at him. He started stripping down to his underwear.

"As fun as that sounds, I am probably gonna have to shower with Jenny after breakfast because she thinks wearing food is better than eating it," James said.

"Boo," Kendall said frowning.

"I know, I'm no fun," James laughed. He walked over to the blonde and pecked him on the lips. "Now, show me the goods so I can have something to get me through the day."

"Uh-uh, if I don't get to see yours you can't see mine," Kendall said.

"Is that all it takes?" James asked, lifting his shirt to reveal his abs. He bit his lips as he toyed with the waistband of his pajama pants.

"Yes, please," Kendall said, biting his lip in anticipation.

James felt a rumble in his stomach. He instead turned and fell to his knees, puking his guts out once more. He heard Kendall gasp and jump back.

"That's attractive," Kendall said.

"Shut up," James groaned once he finished. He sat back on his heels. "I think it was that chicken last night. I told you it was off."

"I'm fine," Kendall said as he knelt down beside him. He held out a wet washcloth.

"You didn't eat the chicken," James said as he wiped his mouth.

"True, I'm sorry you're not feeling well," Kendall said.

"Let's rain check. I'm gonna go help Leora get breakfast ready," James said.

"Yeah, sounds good," Kendall said. He pressed a kiss to James' forehead. He then stood and pulled James up with him. "I hope you feel better soon."

"Me too," James said. He grabbed his toothbrush again.

"Is that why you were brushing your teeth when I got in here," Kendall asked.

"Yesh," James said as he brushed his teeth quickly.

"Are you sure you're ok?" Kendall asked, watching him concerned.

James nodded his head as he rinsed his toothbrush. "I"m sure, now, show me the goods."

"No, the mood has been killed," Kendall shook his head.

"Come on, just a peek," James said, reaching for the blonde.

"No, go away, sickie," Kendall said playfully shoving his husband away.

"Come on, Ken, give me a show," James laughed as he reached for the blonde again.

"No," Kendall laughed as he caught James' hands. He pulled the brunette close. "You're lucky you're cute, you know that?"

"Only cute?" James asked sassily, "I like to think I'm sexy and irresistible."

"You totally are when you're not sick with food poisoning," Kendall replied.

"Fair point, but please, just a peek," James pouted.

"Fine, but just a peek," Kendall replied. He

"Yay," James cheered. He grabbed the blonde's underwear and shoved them down.

"That's more than a peek," Kendall replied.

"You've gotta get naked for the shower anyways," James laughed.

"You're lucky I love you," Kendall replied.

—Happy Mistakes—

Kyle stepped out of the shower as he towel dried. He wrapped his towel around his waist and walked over to the sink. He grabbed his tooth brush.

"That too," Kendall said.

While he went through his morning routine he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror as it defogged. He hadn't spent much time actually looking at himself.

He looked even sicker than before. He knew this had been coming, especially with the chemo treatments. He really didn't recognize the person staring back at him. He looked thinner in the face now, and had bags under his eyes. He looked exhausted.

He felt exhausted. He was always tired now, and the headaches came almost daily too. If he overexerted himself, the shakes came. Most things felt like a struggle. Therapy was a struggle most days too. He put on a brave face though. He had to, for everyone else. They were all cheering for him. He couldn't let them see him falter. He had to pull through. He had to be strong. He couldn't afford to fail this time. The stakes were too high this time.

He sighed as he set his toothbrush aside. He turned away from the mirror. He grabbed his clothes and got dressed for the day. He made his way down to the kitchen where Leora was finishing her breakfast and getting ready to leave for school. Jenny was making a mess of her breakfast as always. Kendall and James were getting ready fro work. Life was hustling and bustling around him.

Yet, here he sat at a stand still. No school. No Work. No friends. Nothing. He spent his days at home or at the hospital getting treatments or therapy. He didn't have a life anymore.

"Look who decided to join us," Leora said as she walked past him. "I'll bring home your homework and help you tonight. It's pretty easy stuff," she said.

She was almost all business lately. Kyle didn't blame her. He had hurt her in a way that he had never intended. He knew things were broken between them. It would take time to recover even a fraction of the relationship they once had. She was being civil though, and working through her emotions on her own to get to a place where she could forgive him, or so she said.

"Kyle?" she said waving a hand in front of his face.

"Oh yeah, sure," Kyle said nodding his head.

That had become their routine. She was helping him keep up with his classes, the school was working with them to help Kyle graduate on time. Leora and Miles would read the assignments to him and he'd answer them. They would do their best to teach him the new stuff. It was the end of the year so there wasn't much new stuff anyways.

"Treatment today?" Kendall asked as he set his bowl in the sink.

"I can take myself," Kyle saud quickly. He didn't want Kendall to worry.

"I was gonna suggest calling Jared. He's off today," Kendall said.

"Oh," Kyle said.

"Yeah, he needs vocal rest so I'm sure he wouldn't mind going with," Kendall said.

"Yeah, I'll text him," Kyle said.

"I thought you couldn't read," Leora said.

Kyle pulled his phone out. He pressed his home button. "Siri text Leora, I've adapted dummy.'"

"You're not funny." Leora deadpanned. She frowned as her phone beeped.

"I think I am," Kyle replied, sticking his tongue out at her.

"Enough arguing, come on, you've got to get to schoo,l Le," James sai,d cutting them off, "and you need to get to work, Ken." He started to usher them out the door.

"When can I go back?" Kyle asked.

James paused, causing Kendall and Leora to stop too. They all looked at Kyle wide eyed. None of them seemed to be expoecting that. Then again they had agreed to pull Kyle for the rest of the year, but that was before. Things had changed. Kyle was getting better with his speech, and he was getting restless staying at home.

"Kyle," James said.

"It's only a few more weeks," Kyle said, "I wanna graduate with my class."

"He's basically passing, Miles, Lucas, and I all have classes with him," Leora said.

"Let's discuss it tonight," Kendall said.

"Please, I just…I can't…I still all…no…ga-hmm," Kyle grunted. He gave a frustrated sigh covering his face. His words started to jumble. He paused and took a calming breath. He needed to focus and not lose it. "I sit here all day. I'm bored. I can do it."

"I don't doubt that you could push yourself through it, but let's discuss this tonight," Kendall said.

"Fine," Kyle sighed.

"I gotta go, I don't wanna be late," Leora said. She took off without another word.

"I gotta go, with Penelope gone I've got more work to do," Kendall said making a hasty exit as well.

Kyle slumped into a chair at the table. James placed a plate of toast in front of him. Kyle looked up at him with a small smile.

"Thanks pops," he said.

"I thought we already talked about this," James said as he sat down with Kyle.

"I know, but it's different now," Kyle said, "my-my speech is good now."

"You have improved quite a bit in the last few weeks," James agreed, "but with the chemo. I don't think you should be around that many people."

"I could do half days or something. I need to get out of this house," Kyle pleaded, "please pops."

"Ok, but let's talk with your dad tonight and maybe we can what the school will allow," James said.

Kyle smiled and nodded his head. He looked down at his toast. He grabbed a piece and started to nibble on it.

James stood and walked over to the fridge. He grabbed one of the shakes they had bought for Kyle. They were packed with proteins and other nutrients he missed when he didn't eat.

"Stomach upset?" James asked, setting the bottle down in front of him.

"A little, but I think it's more just that today is chemo day than anything," Kyle sighed as he grabbed the shake.

"Do you want me to come with? I can juggle some things around," James offered.

"I can call Jared. I'm sure he would be more than willing to come with," Kyle said waving a hand. "Don't worry about it. I know the drill by this point."

"Are you sure?" James asked.

"Yeah, don't miss your meetings. I know you've got a lot going on with the show. It's ok pops, Jared will be there," Kyle said.

"Where will I be?"

The two turned as Jared entered the kitchen. Kyle smiled and waved him over. He was holding a cup in his hand, that Kyle was sure was tea today rather than his usual coffee.

"Dad said you had the day off," Kyle said, "wanna go with me to my treatment?"

"Yeah, I can go," Jared said nodding his head.

"See pops, I've got company," Kyle said.

"Ok, I just…I just worry is all," James said.

"I know, but you also can't miss anymore work. I know how the industry is and if you miss to much they move on and you're yesterday news. So, go," Kyle said.

"Ok, fine, once Marcie gets here. She's taking the kids today," James said standing up. He grabbed Jenny. "Let's go get you cleaned up and ready for the day." He said to the toddler as he left the kitchen.

"So you and me today," Jared said.

"Guess so," Kyle replied.

"Why does that make me nervous?" Jared asked.

"Becuase we haven't really been alone since before," Kyle said simply, "if you've got things to do today we can meet later."

"What?" Jared asked.

"You don't have to spend the day with me out of pity," Kyle said looking down at his hands. He started to pick at a hangnail.

"I am not here because I pity you," Jared said, "I'm here because I've been banned from the studio and I am taking advantage of my time off and spending it with the guy that I love."

"You mean with the guy who can't even give you a straight answer on whether or not you're actually dating," Kyle said. He continued to pick at the hangnail.

Jared reached over and stilled his hands. Kyle looked up at him. He was met with Jared's intense gaze, that conveyed what he could not with words. It was a look of love and adoration. A look that Kyle did not deserve.

"Stop pushing me away," Jared said softly. "I know you feel like you should be doing this alone and that you have to be strong and show everyone a brave face, but you don't have to."

"Yes I do," Kyle said.

"No you don't," Jared said giving his hands a gentle squeeze. "It's ok to be scared Kyle. It's ok to not have it all together. It's ok to cry and panic sometimes. It's a natural human reaction to finding out you have cancer."

"But-" Kyle started.

"No buts, you are human. Don't ignore your emotions just because you think you have to be strong and brave. That's what I am here for, I'll be your brave face right now, you just deal with this and get treated ok. I'll be here for you every step of the way," Jared promised.

"Why?" Kyle asked.

"Becuase, it took almost losing you for me to realize that I can't live without you. I love you, and I think a part of me already knew about Miles and I was just so deep in denial that I would never say it out loud. Like I said I will be here for you, for as long as you'll have me around. I am not going anywhere and if Miles doesn't like that he can just deal with it cause I've had to put up with him intruding on my time with you for over a year now," Jared said.

"What if I don't want you around?" Kyle asked looking away from him.

"Then I'll leave," Jared said simply. He let Kyle's hands slip from his grip. Ky;e's head snapped up, his eyes wide, "but can you truly look me in the eye and tell me to leave?"

"No, I want you here," Kyle said reaching out for him.

Jared scooted closer to him. He took the blonde's face in his hands. He stroked his thumbs over his cheeks. "Relax, I'm only leaving if you want me too. I know we've both been a bit dramatic in the past, but we've grown since then and right now I am here for keeps. I am in this for the long run, as long as you are."

"I am," Kyle said nodding his head.

Jared pulled him into a gentle sweet kiss. Kyle's eyes slipped shut as the emotions ran over him. He wrapped his arms around the older man deepening the kiss. He wanted him to know that he returned all those feeling and then some.

"James! Sorry I'm late my car wouldn't start and I had to go drag Tony…you're not JAmes."

Kyle and Jared sprang apart looking at Marcie as she entered the kitchen in a panic. She froze once they all made eye contact.

"James? That's a first, most people call me Kendall," Kyle quipped, brekaing the tension before it got too thick. Jared and Marcie laughed at that.

"He's upstairs giving Jenny a bath since she decided to wear her breakfast rather than eat it," Jared said.

"Thanks, now behave you too," Marcie said shooting Kyle a playful glare.

"Hey I'm innocent, I would never do such a thing," Kyle said putting his hands up.

"Uh-huh, sure," Marcie said skeptically. She laughed as she left the kitchen.

Kyle sat back in his chair. He looked down a the table for a moment. He felt Jared's eyes on him. Maybe, Jared was right. Kyle needed to stop putting on a brave face. He needed to just feel. Being present in the moment and not anticipating the future so much. Who knew how many more moments he actually had.

"Maybe you're right," Kyle said softly, "I have been putting on a brave face. With treatment and therapy. I have been so running-uhg-no I been sca-no," he groaned a the wrong words came out. He paused and held a hand up to Jared asking him silently to wait. "I haven't been letting myself feel. I have been avoiding it."

"Yeah, but maybe it's time to just relax and feel and be scared and worried," Jared said, "bottling it all up won't do you any good."

"I am scared," Kyle said softly. He hadn't really said that out loud yet. Not since he told Carlos before he got his official diagnosis.

"And that's ok," Jared said.

"Terrified really," Kyle said, "all this work could be for nothing. I-I could…uh..the can-" he paused, gathering his thoughts. He chose his next words carefully. "Cancer could win."

"But it won't," Jared said, "you are in good hands with Dr. K. It was caught fairly early and was only in the two spots on your neck. It didn't metastasize or any of the real scary stuff," Jared said.

"I know, but…what if the chemo doesn't work and it goes and-and I jus..ah…I…nho-doke," Kyle said. He groaned as his words jumbled up. He took a few deep breaths. Jared grabbed his hands again. He didn't say a word, though, he let Kyle figure it out. "I'm scared it won't work."

"Me too," Jared admitted, "but I think everyone is worried. So let's just take this one step at a time ok?"

"Yeah, one step at a time," Kyle agreed.
