Return to Grand Underground and Edd's Rival
After watching Cyrus leave Celestic Town, Eddy turns to his friends.
"So now what? Do we go back to Hearthome City and see if Fantina thinks were ready to battle her?" asked Eddy.
"Yes. But I believe we should train our Pokemon a little to make sure we're ready." said Edd. "Perhaps we should go to the Grand Underground."
"I'm up for that. What about you, Ed?" asked Eddy.
"Yep." said Ed, taking out the Explorer Kit. He puts on the mining helmet and begins digging with the shovel. Seconds later, they fell through the ground and into a tunnel of the Grand Underground.
"I really hate those landings." said Eddy.
"Indeed. Anyway, we should get started on our training. Perhaps we can find a sixth Pokemon for your team, Eddy." said Edd.
"Yeah, I can really use a sixth Pokemon. Not that there's anything wrong with the Pokemon I got right now." said Eddy. They all started to explore the Grand Underground and noticed that they didn't recognize any of the areas they searched so far. "I don't remember areas with snow in them from the last times we were down here."
"I heard that there are multiple tunnel systems of the Grand Underground. Perhaps we're in one we haven't explored before. There might even be Pokemon we haven't seen yet in this one." said Edd. As they walked down a tunnel, Ed sees a bulging spot in a wall and pulls out a pickaxe.
"What are you doing, lumpy?" asked Eddy. Ed points at the bulge in the wall.
"I think Ed wants to do some digging. Perhaps I shall join him. What about you, Eddy?" asked Edd.
"Maybe later; right now I want to try and find a sixth Pokemon for my team." said Eddy.
"Very well. We'll meet back here in one hour." said Edd as he helped Ed dig. Eddy walked around and checked out the Pokemon Hideaways while getting in some training for his Pokemon. While training, Infernape learned Fire Spin, Golbat learned Haze, Golem learned Earthquake, Floatzel learned Whirlpool, and Absol learned Focus Energy and Sucker Punch. While Eddy was training Golbat, he suddenly freezes up and starts to glow.
"Whoa. Golbat, you're evolving." said Eddy. When the glowing stopped, Golbat was purple with two sets of wings, yellow eyes, his mouth was smaller, and he had small feet. "I need to find Double-D and see what kind of Pokemon you are now." Eddy's evolved Golbat flies at him and started nuzzling him, making Eddy laugh. "Okay, buddy. Let's keep exploring this place." Eddy returns his newly-evolved Pokemon to his pokeball and enters a hideaway. He looks around and sees a winter landscape. "Man this Grand Underground is weird. There are all sorts of places down here." As Eddy explored, he sees a Pokemon he hasn't seen yet. It was a small, black Pokemon with light blue eyes, wide teeth, and small ball-like hands and feet. It also had a yellow cloak wrapped around its body with three orange diamond-shaped markings on the back of it. "I don't know what you are, but I do need a sixth Pokemon for my team, so let's see what you can do. Absol, come on out." said Eddy as he releases Absol from her pokeball. Absol stands ready for battle. Suddenly, the new Pokemon shoots out shards of ice at Absol which hit her. "So you wanna play rough, huh? Absol, use Slash." Absol rushes at the Pokemon and strikes it with her claws, sending it flying against an ice stalagmite. The new Pokemon got up and blew a blast of cold air out of its mouth at Absol, hitting her and doing a lot of damage. "You okay, Absol?" asked Eddy with concern. Absol looks at Eddy and nods. "Okay, now use Quick Attack." Absol quickly moves at the new Pokemon and slams into it, knocking it down. Seeing an opportunity, Eddy pulls out an empty pokeball and throws it at the new Pokemon, hitting it and sucking it in. After the pokeball wiggles a few times, it stops and clicks. Eddy runs over and picks it up. "Gotcha, little guy. Since you gave Absol a tough time, you must be strong. I'll definitely keep you around." Eddy turns towards Absol and pulls out a Super Potion. "You did great, Absol." said Eddy as he sprayed Absol with the Super Potion, healing her a bit. Absol smiles at Eddy in response. Eddy looks at the new Pokemon's pokeball. "I need to find sockhead so he can use his pokedex so I can find out what Pokemon you are and what moves you know." Eddy then returns Absol to her pokeball and he leaves to look for his friends. He soon came across them finishing another excavation dig. They turn towards Eddy.
"Greetings, Eddy. How was your training?" asked Edd.
"Check these two out." said Eddy as he releases his newly-evolved Golbat and recently captured new Pokemon for Ed and Edd to see.
"My word. Did Golbat evolve?" asked Edd as he pulled out his pokedex and points it at the evolved Golbat.
"Crobat, the Bat Pokemon, and the final evolution of Zubat. Having four wings enables it to fly faster and more quietly. It turns active when the night comes." said the pokedex.
"It seems your Crobat now knows the move Cross Poison after he evolved. Now let's see what Pokemon you are." said Edd as he points the pokedex at Eddy's newest Pokemon.
"Snorunt, the Snow Hat Pokemon. In some snowy lands, certain folklore says a house will prosper if a Snorunt lives there." said the pokedex.
"It says your new Snorunt is a girl, she knows Powder Snow, Astonish, Leer, Double Team, Ice Shard (a/n: The first move she used on Absol.), Protect, Icy Wind, Frost Breath (a/n: The other move she used on Absol.), and Bite. She has the Ice Body ability which heals her when she's out in battle during a hailstorm." said Edd.
"Sweet. So did you and Ed find anything?" asked Eddy.
"Yep." said Ed, reaching into his backpack and pulling out a yellow plate and a light blue plate.
"The yellow plate is a Zap Plate, which increases the power of electric type attacks of the Pokemon holding it." said Edd. "And the other plate is an Icicle Plate which increases the power of ice type attacks of the Pokemon holding it. The Zap Plate will suit Ed's Electivire just fine and perhaps your new Snorunt can hold onto the Icicle Plate."
"Great idea, sockhead." said Eddy. Ed gives Eddy the Icicle Plate and he gives it to Snorunt, and Ed releases Electivire from his pokeball and he gives him the Zap Plate. Ed and Edd took the time to train their Pokemon. As they did, Ed's Psyduck begins to glow.
"Psyduck's evolving!" exclaimed Ed, excitedly. Psyduck begins to grow. The glowing stopped and Psyduck was now blue, he was now taller, his arms and legs were long, he had three clawed finger and toes with webbing between each of them, his beak looked sharper, his tail was longer, and he had a red gem in the center of his forehead. "He looks so cool!" Edd takes out the pokedex and points it at the newly evolved Psyduck.
"Golduck, the Duck Pokemon and the evolved form of Psyduck. This Pokemon lives in lakes. It swims faster than any world-class swimmer." said the pokedex. Ed hugs his new Golduck who smiles in response. After more training, Ed's Electivire learned Discharge, Duskull learned Curse, and Stunky learned Memento, which Ed didn't approve of seeing how despite the move weakening an opposing Pokemon's strength, it would completely drain the user's stamina, so Ed vowed to never use it. During the training, Stunky evolved into Skuntank.
"Congratulations, Ed, that's two of your Pokemon that evolved. And by evolving, Skuntank learned Flamethrower." said Edd.
"Sounds better than that Memento move." said Ed with disdain. Edd smiled at Ed for disliking a move that would cause his Skuntank to faint. Edd's Kricketune learned Screech, and his Rhyhorn learned Drill Run. After a few minutes of training, the Eds returned their Pokemon to their pokeballs. "What now you guys?" asked Ed.
"Let's explore these tunnels a little more and see what they have." said Edd. They entered a hideaway that was similar to the one Ed captured Elekid and Duskull. They looked around and Edd notices a boy with red, combed back hair, wearing an gray t-shirt over a black, long sleeved shirt, black cargo pants and gray and white sneakers. In front of him was a Pokemon that resembled a giraffe, but its back half was brown and its tail had a smaller head on it. Edd takes out his pokedex and points it at the new Pokemon.
"Girafarig, the Long Neck Pokemon. While it sleeps, the head on its tail keeps watch. The tail doesn't need to sleep." said the pokedex. Edd sees that the boy and the Girafarig was facing a dark, bluish green, ghost like Pokemon. Edd points the pokedex at the Pokemon. "Misdreavus, the Screech Pokemon. It gets nourishment from fear that it absorbs into its red orbs. During the daytime, it sleeps in the shadows."
"Girafarig, use Assurance." said the boy. The Girafarig charges at the Misdreavus and kicks it with its hind legs, knocking it to the ground. The boy quickly pulls a green and black pokeball (Dusk Ball) out of a gray duffel bag near him and throws it at the Misdreavus. It gets sucked into the Dusk Ball and it lands on the ground and wiggles around for a few seconds until it clicks and stops.
"That was a good move using Assurance. It's a dark type move." said Edd. The boy walks over to the Dusk Ball and picks it up. He pulls a pokedex out of his pocket and looks at it.
"It seems this Misdreavus knows some good moves." said the boy. He then saw something in the pokedex that made him frown. He opens the Dusk Ball and lets out the Misdreavus. "Beat it! I don't need a girl Pokemon on my team!" The Misdreavus turns and floats into the shadows of the hideaway. Edd glares at the boy and storms over to him with Ed and Eddy following him.
"Excuse me!" exclaimed Edd, getting the boy's attention. "Am I to understand that you released a Pokemon, despite you saying it knew some good moves, because it was female!?"
"So what if I did?" asked the boy, returning Girafarig to its pokeball.
"A Pokemon's strength is not determined by what its gender is." said Edd.
"So what? To me, all girls are sissies." said the boy.
"Hey! My Absol is female, and I wouldn't call her weak. She's won several battles." said Eddy. "And my new Snorunt is also a female, and she put up quite the fight against Absol before I caught her."
"My Skuntank is a strong female also." said Ed.
"Those Pokemon were probably just lucky to win those battles or you fought some wimpy Pokemon, and you probably caught that Snorunt easily because she was weak." replied the boy. Edd glared at the boy with his teeth clenched together.
"Someone needs to put you in your place!" exclaimed Edd. The boy turns towards Edd.
"Are you challenging me to a Pokemon battle?" asked the boy.
"I believe I am." said Edd.
"Fine. I accept your challenge." said the boy. Soon, Edd and the boy were standing several feet from each other while Ed and Edd were watching from afar. "This will be a two on two Pokemon battle." said the boy, pulling out a Net Ball.
"Very well." said Edd, pulling out a pokeball.
"Remoraid, come on out." said the boy, throwing the Net Ball and releasing a light blue, fish like Pokemon who has fins instead of feet and a horn on its head. Edd pulls out the pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Remoraid, the Jet Pokemon. It squirts water forcefully from its mouth to shoot down flying prey." said the pokedex.
"Roselia, I choose you." said Edd as he throws Roselia's pokeball and releases her. "My Roselia is female so she's perfect for putting you in your place."
"A girl? This shouldn't take long. Remoraid, use Aurora Beam." said the boy. Remoraid releases a multicolored beam from its mouth which hits Roselia, doing super effective damage.
"That was Aurora Beam, an ice-type move. Ice-type moves are very effective against grass-type Pokemon like Roselia." said Edd.
"Should've used a male. You're Roselia doesn't stand a chance." said the boy.
"Oh, really. Roselia, show this scoundrel how strong you are with Giga Drain." said Edd. Roselia releases a large stream of green energy from one of her arm roses which wraps around Remoraid and drains its stamina. The energy returns to Roselia and restores her health completely. Remoraid passes out, much to the boy's shock.
"Way to show that kid, Double-D." said Eddy. The boy returns Remoraid to its Net Ball and he pulls out a black and white pokeball.
"That was just dumb luck." said the boy. "Now let's see you handle this one." The boy throws the pokeball, releasing a large pokemon with brown shaggy fur, a pink snout, and two tusks. Edd points the pokedex at the new Pokemon.
"Piloswine, the Swine Pokemon. It's shaggy coat makes it unable to see. It checks surroundings with its sensitive nose instead." said the pokedex.
"How fitting. A swine Pokemon for a swine of a person." said Edd. Ed and Eddy chuckle at Edd's insult. The boy wasn't as amused.
"Oh,yeah? Well laugh at this!" said the boy. "Piloswine, use Ice Fang." Piloswine moves forward and sinks its icy teeth into Roselia, doing super-effective damage. All of a sudden, Roselia's body froze over.
"Oh no. Ice Fang has a chance of freezing the Pokemon it's used on." said Edd.
"That's right. So what's your girl going to do now?" asked the boy. Edd clenched his fists.
"We're not beaten yet! Roselia, you need to break free!" said Edd. Even though she was coated in ice, Roselia heard Edd and hearing that he cares for her awakened an inner strength inside her which allowed her to break out of her icy tomb, much to the boy's shock.
"What?!" exclaimed the boy.
"Roselia, use Giga Drain on Piloswine!" said Edd. Roselia hits Piloswine with Giga Drain, damaging it and healing Roselia in the process.
"Piloswine! Don't let some girl beat you!" said the boy. "Now use Ice Fang one more time!" Piloswine uses Ice Fang on Roselia, this time doing enough damage to knock her out.
"Roselia, no." said Edd. He runs over to Roselia and lifts her up in his arms. Roselia weakly looks up at Edd. "You did great, Roselia. You take a good rest." Edd returns Roselia to her pokeball.
"Next time, use a male." said the boy with a smirk on his face.
"Normally, I wouldn't take the advice of someone like you; but I'm only doing this to take down that Piloswine of yours." said Edd as he pulls out another pokeball. "Beat this rapscallion for Roselia. Empoleon, come out!" Edd releases Empoleon from his pokeball. "Empoleon, let's try out your new Surf attack." Empoleon raises his flippers up and summons up a large tidal wave which he hops on and rides it towards Piloswine. The wave slams into Piloswine with such force it sends it flying over its trainer and into a wall, leaving an imprint of its body on it. Piloswine slowly slides down the wall and passes out. The boy stood with a stunned look on his face.
"You did it, Double-D!" said Ed.
"Way to go, pal!" said Eddy.
"That was for Roselia and all female Pokemon everywhere!" said Edd. The boy returns Piloswine to its pokeball.
"You think that females can be strong? How dumb is that?" asked the boy.
"My Roselia took down your Remoraid and did a decent amount of damage to Piloswine so don't go around calling her weak you cad." said Edd.
"The name's Mel. Remember that." said the boy now identified as Mel.
"I'm Edd, but I suppose you can call me Double-D like everyone else does." said Edd.
"I am Ed." said Ed.
"And I'm Eddy." said Eddy.
"Whatever. Here's your money." said Mel as he threw pokedollars at Edd. "You three gonna compete in the Sinnoh League?" Mel asked.
"As soon as we get four more badges." said Eddy.
"Then I'm looking forward to settling the score with you there." said Mel, glaring at Edd, who glares at him back. With that, Mel leaves the Grand Underground.
"What a jerk." said Eddy.
"Indeed, Eddy. If I go against him at the Sinnoh League, my Pokemon and I are going to give his team such a thrashing." said Edd as he picked up the pokedollars.
"Looks like you got a rival now." said Eddy.
"Too bad he's as you call him a jerk." said Edd.
"My rival is just as much a jerk as yours is." said Eddy.
"My rival is mean." said Ed.
"I'm definitely going to train my Pokemon a lot more now so we're ready for him at the Sinnoh League if I'm up against him." said Edd.
"We're all going to train harder if we go against our rivals, too." said Eddy.
"Yeah." said Ed.
"Let's get out of here and go to the Pokemon Center and get our Pokemon treated." said Edd.
"Yeah. I'm getting hungry anyway." said Eddy.
"Me, too." said Ed.
"As am I." said Edd. With that, they return to the surface.
