The Nublar Six: Before they knew

Greetings fanfic readers! Thank you for clicking on this novel chapter I just made. I really enjoy writing them, and hopefully I'll continue to do for a long period of time. I've lots of ideas to convert in words. Anyway, enjoy!

Brooklyn, Kenji, and Darius are punished and cannot participate in the activities of this day, leaving Sam and Yaz alone.

Chapter 04: A new turn

The sun was already relatively high in the sky. The planning for the campers today was kayaking in the caverns.

Unfortunately, only Sammy and Yasmina could go, as Ben's leg hurt and the three others were punished.

"What? You mean, it's just us two?" Yasmina asked Roxie.

"Yep, the rest didn't respect the rules last night, so they stay here for today," Dave explained.

"Guys, no. I feel sad for you. You're gonna miss the kayaking! And we won't be together…" Sammy said on a sad tone.

"They shouldn't have left in the middle of the night then! But don't worry Sam, you will enjoy this day!" Roxie said.

"There's an emergency radio in the closet next to the bar. Only for emergencies!" Dave added.

The counsellors, Sammy and Yasmina entered the elevator. Yasmina glanced one last time at the rest of the campers. Kenji gave her a subtle thumbs up.

"Sigh…" Yasmina exhaled while going down.

"Heh Yaz, it's just us now! I don't mind! Finally, some quality time with my bestie!" Sammy replied, coming closer.

Oh, this is gonna be great… Yasmina thought.

Ben sat on the sofa and was joined by Darius. Kenji was standing behind it.

"Ugh, anybody seen my charger?" Brooklyn asked, walking around.

"What? You wanna film us doing nothing here? Don't know if your audience will appreciate…" Kenji replied.

Brooklyn stood still for a moment and sat on the couch. "But they will get worried that I am not online!"

"I think they'll be more worried about having no content… No offence, but that's what they're here for, right?"

"Ugh, yeah, probably… My audience…" Brooklyn said before going back to checking her latest reviews, mostly negative.

Kenji stood behind her and read the comments himself. Good content please! It just sucks for now! Way better before… not gonna lie!

Two hours later

Ben was drawing on some papers while the other three were playing poker.

"Haha! Full-house! I win!" Kenji exclaimed.

"Not this time Kenj," Brooklyn said, placing down a four of a kind.

"Dumb game! Argh!" Kenji stood up.

While Brooklyn and Darius were laughing at the scene, from outside the treehouse came the same loud roar again. But this time, followed by gunshots and human screams.

"W-what was that?" Darius asked.

Ben hid behind the sofa while the three others rushed outside to get clues. The gunshots continued.

"It's coming from near the paddock we visited yesterday!" Brooklyn noticed.

The roar appeared again. Darius widened his eyes. "It's the same roar as tha—"

"As the Indominus!" Brooklyn finished.

"W-what is, the Indominus!?" Ben asked, suddenly standing behind them.

"The thing we saw yesterday!" Brooklyn answered.

"W-we must call Dave and Roxie!" Darius said.

The four rushed to the bar where the radio was. Darius took it.

"Roxie! Dave! Do you hear me?" Darius asked, but he didn't receive an answer.

"Try again!" Ben insisted.

"Does anyone hear me? Darius speaking! There's an emergency going on!" But again, no response.

"Stupid piece of technology! Never works!" Brooklyn complained.

Darius sighed and turned to the rest.

"What do we do now, dinoboy?" Kenji asked.

"We need to warn the park! That thing is extremely dangerous."

"So it is for us! It will eat us if we come across it!" Brooklyn replied.

"Staying here is safe, it can't possibly get to us," Ben added.

"You're right. But everyone outside, all the dinosaurs… They aren't…"

Ben looked with horror. "D-dinos? Y-you mean… Bumpy! Bumpy's in danger!"

"It probably has already fled from the roars," Kenji said, trying to reassure his friend.

"She lives near the open fields! That's right next to where that thing is! I… I must find her back." Ben turned around, but Darius stopped him.

"Ben no! You're gonna get eaten!"

"She fits in the elevator!"

"You're leg!"

"It doesn't hurt any more!"

"Ben! Why would you risk your life for a dino you saw just once?" Kenji joined in.

Ben was silent for a moment. "Sigh. Her look… It was of pure kindness. She's young. She deserves to live, and I'm gonna help her!"

Darius sighed again and turned to his other friends. "I can't let him go alone… You two stay here for the radio, and if someone comes back, tell them where we went."

"Darius you're kidding right?" Brooklyn said.

"Ben has a point. And I don't want dinosaurs to get hurt by that monster."

Kenji nor Brooklyn replied and looked with certain understanding for the boy's love of dinos. Darius joined Ben in the elevator, and left.

To the West of the camp

Dave, Roxie, Sammy, and Yasmina were driving across the jungle, heading home to the camp. They just finished the kayaking.

"Beautiful, wasn't it? All those caves with all those crystals!" Sammy exclaimed.

Yasmina looked at the plants they drove by, zoning out a bit.

"Eh, Yaz? You're the only one here so, I was actually talking to you?"

"Huh what? Ah yeah, the kayaking. Great, indeed! Lovely!" Yasmina exaggerated.

"Dave, I'm worried," Roxie said.

"Why would you be? They learnt their lesson, I'm sure."

"I expected Kenji to call us several times to talk about 'his' emergencies. Like short on candy, or other dumb stuff!"

"Eh Roxie?"

"Something probably happened to them…"

Roxie!"

"Or they locked him up for being so annoying… Why did you stop driving?"

"Roxie look in front of you!" Dave shouted.

In the distance, a horde of herbivores was running towards the vehicle. Yasmina and Sammy heard the noise too.

"W-what is that?" Sammy asked.

"Dave turn around!" Roxie ordered.

The vehicle switched directions and drove away, but the horde was already there and soon after, the vehicle would be surrounded by all sorts of herbivores.

"They're fleeing for something, but what?" Yasmina told herself.

From the left, a stegosaurus bumped against the car, shaking everyone.

"Woah! Hold on tight in the back! How the Hell did they escape?" Dave shouted.

A sinoceratops from the right also shook the vehicle.

"Aaah! Help!" Sammy lost her balance and almost fell out, but Yasmina caught her on time.

"Got you!"

But before Yasmina could pull her friend up, an ankylosaur hit the vehicle, making both teens fall out.

"Aoush! Dang!" Yasmina complained while falling on the dirt ground. Sammy fell on her.

The horde was running all around them. The two were trapped.

"Yaz I'm scared!" Sammy said, hugging her. They stayed immobile for a moment.

"Dave, they fell out the back! Turn around immediately!" Roxie ordered.

"I can't! There's dinos all around us! We will get crushed too! Asap we'll return to pick them up, but now let's drive to safety!"

Back to Yasmina and Sammy, the last herbivores passed by them. Yasmina stood up and looked around, but Sammy kept attached to her.

"Eh, Sam, you can let go now. We're safe…"

"How do you know?"

"Well, look around and you'll—"

But before finishing her sentence, Yasmina realised a thing. These dinos were, running from something… She thought. Yasmina heard distant footsteps coming closer.

A young parasaurolophus emerged from the bushes. Yasmina took a defensive position around Sammy. The dino looked around and released a cry. It was wounded at its leg.

But then, out of nowhere, a ceratosaurus appeared and attacked the herbivore, killing it.

"Aaah! Sammy, let go, or we'll die!" Yasmina insisted, while assisting to the horror from just a few metres.

"I'm too scared Yaz!"

"Sammy! We gotta run! Now!" Yasmina forced the grip, took Sammy's arm and sprinted into the jungle. The theropod noticed and engaged in the pursuit after releasing a roar.

"It's getting closer!" Sammy shouted. The carnivore attempted to bite her, but the two turned to the left, making the dino bump against a three, but resuming the chase.

"We must outrun it, or we'll get eaten!" Yasmina yelled as the ceratosaurus approached.

"Do zigzags! Like the bulls at the ranch!" Sammy replied. The two did and the large creature followed their movements, but started to fall behind. It hit a tree and stumbled over its roots.

"Find somewhere to hide quick!"

Sammy saw a hollow tree trunk surrounded with some plants. "There!"

The girls sprinted to the trunk and hid inside, close to each other. They didn't hear anything, but their exhaling.

"Is it, gone?" Sammy whispered.

Both didn't dare to move. Yasmina slowly tried to look outside for the dino.

The ceratosaurus suddenly bit a part of the trunk. The two girls screamed and crawled to the other side.

But the carnivore didn't stop there. With the horn on its nose, it pushed the trunk which started rolling down as it went down a hill.

"AAAAHHH! Cover your head!" Yasmina shouted as they rolled down.

The trunk hit some rocks and abruptly stopped rolling. Yasmina and Sammy hit their heads.

"Owww, my head, gosh!" Yasmina complained. She crawled outside while panting. She looked around. The trunk had rolled all the way to the open fields.

"Yaz? Yaz you're here?" Sammy asked. Yasmina quickly turned around to help her friend up.

"Sammy, are you alright?"

Sammy stood up with the help of her 'friend', looking a bit dizzy, but then widening her eyes. "Y-Yaz! Your head is bleeding!"

Yasmina touched the wound and saw some blood on her fingers. Sammy looked very concerned. "It-it's okay… It, doesn't hurt too much."

Sammy then suddenly hugged her, making Yasmina stiffen.

"Thank you for saving me…" Sammy softly told her.

Yasmina looked surprised. "Ehh, same for you, I guess? You found that trunk to hide in… Without that we would, be—"

A fare-away roar interrupted their conversation. Sammy released the grip to hide behind her 'friend'.

"But we still have to avoid that thing! How did it even escape?" Sammy questioned.

"I don't know, but we should leave this island immediately!"

"Ehm, why not go to the camp first, to take our stuff, and warn the rest? Also, Dave and Roxie would expect us to go there, right?"

"Okay then, the camp. Do you know the way?"

Back to the treehouse, Kenji sat at the table with the radio, trying to get it to work. Brooklyn was nervously walking around the room. She approached the table.

"We need to do something! Staying up here just makes me more nervous!"

"What do you wanna do then? We should stay here if anybody returned. And this stupid radio still doesn't work!" Kenji hit the table with it.

"Sigh, maybe they're evacuating everyone, and we're just being here!"

Kenji leaned back on his chair and looked at her. "Really, I can't answer that. But hey, I'm getting bored too of this radio not working. So…"

The two looked at each other for a moment. Brooklyn checked her phone quickly.

"We'll search around the kayaking area, where Yaz and Sam went," Kenji explained, closing the elevator door.

The duo got on the ground level, both hesitant to step out the lift.

"You first," Brooklyn said with a touch of humour.

"Ladies first," Kenji replied.

Brooklyn sighed. But then both tried to leave at the same time.

"Ahh, let's not lose any more time! What way are the kayak caves?"

"From here, it should be, via that road over the river," Kenji pointed at it. The two commenced their walk, hoping to find help.

As they left, five minutes after, the counsellor's vehicle arrived in front of the camp.

"The emergency has been declared on the island. We must gather the kids and bring them to the docks for evac. Hopefully they're still up there. And after we'll search for Sammy and Yasmina."

"Don't worry Roxie, they learnt their lessons. Your scary look was enough to lock them up there," Roxie looked annoyed, "hehe, j-just that they haven't been, really, locked up…"

The adults got in the elevator and went up.

"Kids! Kids! Come all here!" Roxie shouted. The two looked around the place. Everything was empty.

"Goddammit they all left! Where could they possibly go to? They will get eaten by that monster!" Roxie panicked.

"Don't forget about all the other carnivores that escaped during the incident…"

"You're not helping Dave! Let's get back in the car, and search for them!"

Away from the camp, Darius and Ben just arrived at the open fields.

"I'm coming Bumpy…" Ben told himself, and he ran down the hill he stood on.

"W-wait, Ben! Give me a sec," Darius said, being exhausted. He soon followed his friend.

"Bumpy! Bumpy where are you?!" He shouted around.

The two then faced a pile of rocks. A deep moan came from behind it. It scared the boys who hid behind the rock wall.

"Do you, do you think it's the—"

"No, it's not her…"

"It's a she?"

Darius slowly followed the rocks, and wanted to peak over them. What he saw made him run towards it.

"No, Darius, what are you—" Ben followed his friend and stopped talking.

A wounded ankylosaur was laying on its side. Her stomach was covered in claw marks. It was moaning. Darius silently approached the dino, and rubbed her head. The animal let him do.

"This is— Blech!"

Ben got behind some rocks. When he was done throwing up, he looked again. Darius looked sad.

"It passed…" He mumbled. "Must've been the Indominus… Who knows where it is now."

Ben put his hand on Darius' shoulder. "You care a lot about these animals… I didn't even thank you for coming with me to search for Bumpy."

Darius smiled slightly. "No problem Ben… Let's find her now."

The boys started with the places near them, but they had to go further and further away. Searching in different parts of the fields and the jungle surrounding it.

Ben sighed after searching in the umpteenth bush. He proceeded to sit down on a nearby rock.

Darius approached him, also unsuccessful. "You found something?"

"No. That thing, probably got her…"

"Hey, don't say that. We'll find—" At that moment, the two heard noises of bushes.

They both stood up, facing the sounds. Darius picked up a stick. And then… Bumpy jumped out, releasing a moan of happiness. She jumped on Ben and started licking him.

"Bumpy! Bumpy, I can't believe it! She's alive! How are you girl, hahaha!" Ben exclaimed. Darius was happy too.

Bumpy bounced in front of him, looking at the stick.

"We don't have time to play Bumps, it's dangerous here," Ben explained to the animal, but it didn't understand.

"Oh just one throw," Darius said, and he threw the stick in the jungle.

"Aoush my head!" A voice complained.

"Wait, that's—"

Yasmina and Sammy emerged from the nature. They looked surprised.

Ben looked at Yasmina's head and became pale again. "Oh God. Too much blood, in one d—"

"Ben!" Darius caught his fainting friend and lowered him to the ground. Bumpy started licking his head, waking him up rapidly after.

"You okay Ben?" Yasmina asked. Everyone stood around him.

"What are you two doing here?" Darius asked.

"We like, came back from the kayaking, came across a horde of herbivores, got chased by a big scary carnivore with a horn on his nose, and now we're here, trying to find help," Sammy summarized.

"C-ceratosaurus too?"

"What do you mean?" Yasmina asked. Darius stood up and realised something.

"Not just the Indominus escaped! All dinos did!"

The girls looked confused. "I don't understand Darius, what is going on?"

"Carnivores are normally locked in enclosures. That means all of them escaped!"

"We gotta get back to camp quickly!" Ben said, standing up from the panic.

"And you're taking Bumpy with you?" Yasmina pointed at the young animal.

"To bring it in safety. That's why we're here, to bring her with us."

"Aww, she's so cute!" Sammy mentioned while tickling the animal.

"We can't lose any more time, let's get back to safety. We'll figure out what's really going on later. Hopefully Kenji managed to fix that radio and get us help…"

"Sigh! It's been an eternity that we're walking! Are you sure we're going the right way?" Brooklyn asked.

"Brooklyn, I am the best person to have for orientation on this island! It shouldn't be far from here…"

Brooklyn accepted it by going silent. The two had been walking on dirt roads for a while now.

Brooklyn took her phone and checked latest comments. Some were concerned, but others more arrogant about her not giving them content. She sighed deeply.

Kenji noticed . He had already seen some reactions earlier today. He felt bad for Brooklyn, so he got slightly closer to her.

"H-hey your phone still works! Perfect, amazing! How are your followers doing?" He asked happily.

"Oh, eh…" Brooklyn put her phone back in her pocket and turned to Kenji. "Y-yeah, they're doing, alright… I, guess…"

Kenji raised an eyebrow. "You sure? You just had one of those deeeep sighs, clearly meaning something's bothering you about them."

Brooklyn hesitated and started looking around. "Kenji, I don't know if I wanna talk about it. We, don't really know each other. Some conversations are for, friends instead…"

"Aaand, what does it cost me to become a friend?" Brooklyn gulped and continued to look around.

"Hey look over there! An open space, maybe the kayaks are there!" She said while running to the right. Kenji followed her.

The open space instead was a large metallic fence, stretching from both sides.

"It's another carnivore's enclosure I guess," Brooklyn told herself.

"L-looks like it escaped…" Kenji said in fear, pointing at an opening in the fence. Brooklyn was shocked too.

"How could it—"

Behind them, the duo heard loud footsteps coming closer. As they slowly turned around, a carnotaurus appeared, holding a gallimimus by the neck. He stood still and looked at the campers.

"S-so, you p-punched a shark? Sh-shouldn't be too d-different…" Kenji stuttered in fear.

The carnotaurus dropped his prey and roared loudly at the two. Another chase began.

"Where do we go now?!" Kenji screamed.

"Just run for your life!" Brooklyn replied.

The two sprinted closer to the fences. The carnivore followed, but bumped into it as he was larger, slowing him down.

"We'll lose him in the jungle!" Kenji proposed, and the two veered to the left, entering the jungle again.

The predator was still chasing them. He was about to bite Kenji, but Brooklyn saw it and pulled him to the side. The two turned again.

"It doesn't manoeuvre well in bends! We gotta keep turning!" Brooklyn explained.

The two campers zigzagged across the jungle, creating quite a distance with the predator. But after running in a straight line, they arrived to a deep ravine.

"Waaah!" Brooklyn shouted, looking down.

"Look out!" Kenji said, grabbing her arm.

The two turned around and heard a growl with loud footsteps approaching.

"We are screwed!" Brooklyn yelled.

Kenji looked around and saw a dead tree. "There! We can walk over it quick!"

As the duo ran towards the tree, the carnotaurus had appeared again and sprinted towards them.

Kenji jumped on the tree, quickly balancing himself. Brooklyn was right behind him, but hit a stone and stumbled on the ground. Her phone fell out of her pocket.

"Brooklyn!" Kenji went to her and helped her up. He saw the theropod close to them. Kenji took Brooklyn by the arm, and they jumped on the tree.

The carnotaurus missed his bite, and lost his prey. It growled at the campers before turning around and vanishing in the jungle.

Brooklyn and Kenji stood on the other side of the ravine now.

"Woohoow! Get owned, Toro!" Kenji shouted triumphally.

"You gave it a name?" Brooklyn replied. She felt her pocket and widened her eyes. "My phone!"

She rushed back over the tree to the other side.

"Hey that's dangerous! Come back!" Kenji shouted, but Brooklyn ignored him. He sighed and went to her.

Brooklyn fell on her knees and picked a broken phone from the grass. She sighed. "Welp, won't hear anything from the Brooklanders for a while…"

Kenji kneeled next to her and put his arm on Brooklyn's shoulder. "I'm sure it will do good…"

Brooklyn looked up at him, and sighed. "See… Ugh, I might seem very social, but I'm not. When I got popular a few years ago, and received only positive comments of what I was doing, life was great! I did everything to please my audience. I needed that confirmation. And now, they all feel bored and just come watch me to complain how it was better before.

"It made me quite insecure about myself. I thought it was my fault, so I doubled efforts, but at what cost, and what result? My, real, life. My social life. I sacrificed it for this influencer's career. And then it doesn't pay off…"

Kenji looked affected and surprised by Brooklyn's sincerity.

"And to answer your question earlier… I, don't have real friends…"

Brooklyn put her head in between her knees and looked down. Kenji felt bad for her.

"You said such conversations are only for friends. So, guess I'm your friend now," he explained. Brooklyn looked at him with a little smile.

A distant roar interrupted their conversation. It wasn't the carnotaurus.

"We should move," Kenji said reaching out to his new friend. Brooklyn got up and the two started walking again.

The duo walked for some moments to realise they had been turning in a circle. They ended back at the treehouse.

"Let me tell you, I won't even blame your bad orientation as I'm happy to be back here," Brooklyn comically mentioned.

The two walked to the elevator and went up with it. The doors opened, and a young ankylosaur jumped on the duo.

"Bumpy come h— Guys! They're back!" Ben shouted.

Everyone gathered, and a group hug was initiated by Sammy.

"Oh I was getting sooo worried something happened to you guys!" She exclaimed.

"Where did you even go to? Did the radio give any call?" Darius asked the latecomers.

"We, kinda got bored and thought, we could find help out there more easily… We ended up being chased by a scary carnotaurus," Kenji explained, imitating the dino.

Darius took a step back from the group.

"Okay, so what do we know? The dinos are now all around us, including the carnivores. We must find a way out of here alive!"

"We should wait for someone to come!" Ben proposed.

"I don't think they will! They would have been here already," Yasmina replied.

"Then we gotta gear up and find help ourselves," Kenji advised.

"No way! That's too dangerous!"

"We have no choice!"

The discussion went on for some moments. Bumpy was running around the room and at one point passed by Sammy's backpack next to the couch. It fell, and an amber stone rolled out.

"S-Sammy?"

"What is that?"

Everyone looked at her with confusion. Sammy gulped.

A cliffhanger, of course! Just when this is the first 'real' chapter when it comes to dangerous dinosaurs trying to eat you! It won't stop here for sure… I hope you enjoyed reading, if so, please consider reviewing.

I'll be out of town next week, so until then, no new chapter uploads. But I will still be able to work on the next ones, so next chapter come much later as the other ones. See you soon!
