That night Hannah had her first date. She took off her black clothes and her stern look was visibly excited but she preferred not to give it to her mother. She didn't want her and her extravagant friends to make it a Vital issue . It would have been a ride on the beach, no big deal, and not even too far from Andrea and all the others who would have had dinner there anyway. When James showed up at the cabin he had the cheerful and embarrassed look of those who were not supposed to face a father but four men who looked at him patting him on the shoulders and making recommendations. Brandon, Dylan, David and Steve fell into the side. When Hannah went out she was wearing a light white dress with a denim jacket and the inseparable amphibians, because that was the part that identified her. She had picked up her hair in a soft hairstyle and an non-existent thread of makeup that illuminated her. Kelly and Brenda were very satisfait with it.
It seemed to Andrea that she was about to leave for war.
Sammy told her she was very pretty and she thanked him with a smile she almost never gave him.
They all sat outside, the table set, the summer heading towards its second phase roaring and looked at her until she disappeared from their sight walking alongside a very excited James.
"I don't want to think about when it will happen to Maddy," Steve said as he approached Andrea's ear.
"Yeah " she sighed.
He put his consoling hand on her shoulder.
Brandon and Kelly exchanged a quick interlocutory look. Clare was a few steps behind. She didn't know about Andrea, but she perceived an unusual complicity. Steve no longer had any obligations to her, and they had such a relationship that they had no problem telling each other their truths. If there was anything he would have told her. She didn't know about the break in that strange relationship he had imposed on Andrea for her presence. She didn't even know that Andrea had interrupted without any problems. In everyone's eyes it seemed something strange and incomprehensible but not for Andrea. Not at that age. Keep company, share time. It wasn't such a strange thing.
Clare herself was engaged and noticed how easily she had forgotten her boyfriend once she got into the Los Angeles environment. She didn't know exactly what she wanted from Steve, maybe nothing, time had passed under their fingers without destroying what they had but he realized that living on two different continents gave no hope for anything. But it made her smile that that connection still existed. Steve reminded her what she had given up and how hard she had worked. She just wanted to be with him for the remaining days. Then everyone would return to their life even if they sometimes wondered if it was possible to go back to their lives and pretend that nothing had changed.
The dinner continued with laughter and stories of old anecdotes, especially about the disastrous and exciting camping all done together.
They laughed several times while Maddy and Sammy had already dropped the table and were playing a short distance away.
"We should do it again, we should go back," Dylan exclaimed, "It would be very nice of course let's avoid the part where Brandon wanted to throw himself from a cliff."
"Yes," Brandon laughed, "because you're not young enough to pull me up."
"And you're not that thin anymore," they laughed again.
Dylan suddenly got serious, made the knife on the glass jar jing and proclaimed smiling "Brenda and I have an announcement to make." Everyone silenced the laughter and that favored Dylan "I asked Brenda to become my wife. We are getting married"
It was a moment among all of them. Of disbelief more than anything else. Brandon was the only one who knew that's why he had time to observe others.
"That's great" Donna and David reacted almost immediately. Dylan was as radiant as Brenda. Or maybe who knows it was that sunset light.
Kelly got up and headed for Brenda.
"Congratulations," she told her.
Brenda didn't know how to decipher her expression. No one actually knew how to do it, except Brandon.
"I'm happy for you," she whispered to him, hugging him.
David asked when the big event and they had no answer, maybe next spring, who knows. Meanwhile they wanted to leave for a short vacation and Dylan looked at Kelly because he knew that too would be ground for confrontation again.
Then he broke the delays and asked Kelly to help him communicate the event to Sammy, he wanted his mother to be present, he was afraid he would not be able to handle the little one's hypothetical reaction.
Kelly returned to sit next to Brandon without saying a word.
Brandon looked at her profile, no woman had ever looked more beautiful to him, she turned to look at him.
"The end is not easy for anyone," she said, "it's like an acceptance even though you've been aware of it for a long time."
"I know," he replied, shaking her hand.
Kelly looked at him smiling "I'm sorry" she replied "you're here to put up with these arguments without saying a word. Sorry if I hurt you."
"I wish it wasn't like that," Brandon whispered.
Brandon understood but that terrible feeling that had never ended between the two of them grabbed him almost immediately. The idea that Kelly wasn't completely his made him stagger. The trauma of years before when Dylan tried to take her away from him was a silent and sometimes mute shock inside his heart. He had never seen any like that. He had suffered in silence even after Sammy's birth, from afar. He felt he couldn't stand it to any extent or in any way. And he was afraid of it.
Then an elementary thought came to his mind. Kelly had always come to pick him up. Wherever he was. Kelly had granted him forgiveness when no one would give it to him. And these things belonged only to him. Only to them. He smiled.
He even smiled because he felt ready to ask Kelly to spend his life with him but now with that sudden announcement it would be just a copy. He observed the happiness of his sister. Her eyes were shining.
Brenda ran to him "don't say anything to mom and dad. Let's go and tell them in person in Minneapolis.
"I took the secret," he replied.
"My father is getting married," Sammy told Maddy as soon as Kelly and Dylan walked away after giving him the news. He had not had any reaction. He seemed comfortable even though Brenda didn't know her at all.
"Will Brenda become your mother now?" Maddy asked him.
"I have a mother."
"Now you'll also have Brenda and maybe even a new father."
Sammy seemed upset by these flashes coming from Maddy.
"I would like my mother and father to get back together, I liked it when we were all together," continued the little girl.
" Yes to me too," Sammy confirmed, taking a quick look at Kelly and Dylan, "the but sometimes they argued too much."
"Yes, mine too. Maybe one day they will kiss and get back together," Maddy sighed thinking of her parents now far from each other.
"Yeah," Sammy replied.
Kelly and Dylan were coming back to the others.
"And so you get married." She whispered
"Yeah... Are you okay?" Dylan asked to her.
"I'm fine," she replied, looked At Brandon who was in profile and laughed illuminated by the evening, and she felt an immense love for him, he had always remained, even when he had left. He had stayed. And for the first time she had a strange fear of losing Brandon. Dylan didn't count anymore. It was Brandon. Always and only Brandon.
Kelly looked at Dylan"If you want, you can take Sammy with you,"
Then she moved away to reach Brandon, She took his face with her hands and kissed him deeply.
Kelly was packing Sammy's suitcase as he trotted happily around her. His innocence did not make him perceive the possible lack of his mother. They had never moved away from each other. Never. Kelly had dedicated her life to that son. To that little boy with a nice look and unlimited imagination. He had saved her.
"I'll call you every day and tell you everything I do."
"I'll wait for your call." said Kelly.
"And I'll buy you a nice gift."
'Like what?'
"A fantastic necklace. All colorful."
"Uh!" Kelly laughed but she felt the tears rise and scrape her throat.
"You're left alone mom."
"Oh no, I won't be alone, don't worry. There's Brandon, Uncle Steve, Aunt Donna.."
"What if you miss me then?"
Kelly squeezed him to herself.
"I already know I'll miss you, but ten days will pass quickly and you'll meet a lot of new friends."
"I'll miss you too."
Brandon's car entered the driveway and followed Steve's.
"They've arrived!" Sammy ran down the stairs and ventured on his father as soon as he got out of B's car.
"I'm ready!"
'I see it!' Dylan said laughing.
Kel could hear the cries of joy from upstairs.
SHe sat on the bed. Exhausted.
"Are you all right?" Brandon had just looked out the door.
"Yes," Kel replied, quickly wiping her tears with a finger, "I just never walked away from him."
Brandon took a few steps into the room and sat next to her He passed a finger over her tears "I know. But he is so happy to go. We can't keep it downstairs. Let him have this experience. Give Dylan a chance too."
Kel didn't answer but rested her head on his shoulder.
"Do I help you?" I whisper Brandon to him.
"No, I have do e."
Kel got up and Brandon helped her close the suitcase.
"Are you ready?"
"Yes."
They headed to the airport. Kel didn't say a single word throughout the trip, sighted by Brandon. She strove to smile at her son, who looked at everything around with new eyes.
"Promise me that everything will be fine," Kelly told Dylan.
'Promise.'
They hugged each other tightly. It was that secret pact between parents. People who had not been able to be together but smart enough to be able to maintain relationships and make them a gift for the child.
Brenda watched them a few steps back. She wasn't a mother but she could well understand Kel's sense of anxiety. The crack of the detachment that from a crack became a ravine. She was sorry that she was unable to remedy their distances in those days. She would have liked to hug her. She saw her lost. And honestly she was lost too. She was afraid that Sammy would have attacks of nostalgia that they would not be able to handle. After all, how much did Dylan know about his son? She shook her head and told herself that they would get away with it, it was not a lifetime but a few days. And Dylan was so happy. He had probably waited for Sammy to be old enough to be able to travel with him. To be able to understand and show him his world to cement a different but certainly special relationship. Brenda touched her belly .
"Then I'll wait for you here when you get back."
"It's okay mummy"
"Have fun," Kelly whispered to him, giving him a kiss on the lips that his son welcomed.
Sammy shook hands with Dylan and together with Brenda they sharpened for check in. Sam raised his hand to greet her. When it disappeared behind the sliding doors for Kel it was a sharp blade. She broke down in Brandon's arms.
"It's going to be okay," He whispered.
Kelly smiled at him and wiped her tears
"Let's hope."
Steve came up with two suitcases.
"And where are you going?" Kel asked him.
"The question is where are you going"he replied.
Kel looked at him with an interlocutory air and then turned her gaze to Brandon.
"What.."
"Well." explained B. "I had made you a promise."
"What is it?"
"We have to check in too."
Kel smiled.
"Check in for where?"
"You'll find out at check in," Brandon smiled.
Suddenly Kelly's face lit up.
"Who made the suitcases?"
'Me!' Brandon said enthusiastically but Kel's look wasn't as euphoric " okay joke.. Donna prepared them for you."
"Oh good thing," Kel laughed.
They lined up at the Bluairways check in. The board was full of city names. Pretty much everywhere.
"And Sam?"
"Kel" B calmed her down "Sammy has just left. Anyway, we'll be back two days before him."
"What if he came back earlier?"
"We have the open ticket can come back whenever we want. And before you ask me, Brenda and Dylan know where we're going."
"Oh! And where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
Kel stopped to look at Brandon's profile. He saved her again. It offered her an alternative from spending hours caring for her son and sinking her face into the lack of the child.
They arrived at check in and Brandon pulled out the passports. B's was full of stamps. Kel's didn't have any.
Observing him Kel felt the thin blade of what she had not done and the lost time. She had locked herself in her golden cage in Beverly Hills refusing to get out of it. It had been her comfort zone. Her perennial excuse.
"Here is Mr. Walsh and Mrs. Taylor. The flight is number 7718. Gate 32. Boarding will start in an hour."
Kel looked down at the board and began selecting the numbers to see the destination.
Flight 7718 Gate 32 destination Rome (Stopover New York)
"Oh my God. Are we going to Italy Bran?" Kel did not hold back the joy, jumped around his neck and kissed him so much that her enthusiasm made the other passengers in transit turn and smile.
When the plane was on the runway Kel smiled looking out. She shook hands with Bran.
"Thank you," she told him.
"I love you," he replied.
"I love you too"
The plane took off a few minutes later. How Sammy's, Dylan and Brenda had taken off just before.
Different Traces in the sky.
Both directions were towards a new summer.
Two trips, two distinct destinations, BK will face a journey far away, in the Mediterranean, do you see the love between them? Brenda is pregnant? Will Dylan be able to immerse himself in fatherhood with Sammy?
Does the story seem coherent to you? Boring? Please rewiew. I love to read your comments. Is anyone there?
