Four days later, Clayton, Louisiana
After leaving one of their several hitched rides, Dean and Bonnie walked down the road in the woods until they arrived at a cemetery and right at the base of a wooden windmill.
"Are you sure this is it?" Bonnie asked.
"It better be." Dean said as he picked a shovel and began digging the ground until they found a skeleton and Dean's arm began glowing as he groaned.
"You OK?" Bonnie asked. She knew that keeping a vampire essence inside must have been painful.
"Hold on, you bastard." Dean muttered, turning to the glow on his arm as he rolled up his sleeve. "Hold on."
Dean pulled out his knife and began cutting himself in the arm, where the glow was as he poured the drops of blood on the skeleton.
"Anima corpori. Fuerit corpus totem resurgent." Dean said the incantation as some red electricity pulsed through the skeleton and Dean groaned and fell down on the ground as flesh materialized on the skeleton and Benny then got up on his feet.
"That was faster than I'd thought." Bonnie said.
"No thanks to you. What the hell took you two so long?" Benny drawled.
Dean grunted as he got up on his feet. "You're welcome. Everything working?"
Benny cracked his neck and pulled out his fangs before turning normal again. "Good enough. So…" He looked around. "What now?"
"Like we talked about, I guess." Dean shrugged and Benny nodded.
"Then this is goodbye." Benny said.
"Stay out of trouble. For all of our sakes, Benny." Bonnie said and he nodded before he offered his hand and first Bonnie and Dean shook it.
"We made it out. I can't believe it." Benny said as he laughed and hugged each other.
"Same here." Dean said before Benny walked away.
"I haven't said it yet, Dean but…" Bonnie turned to Dean. "Thank you. Thank you for getting me out."
"I suppose I should thank you too. We made it out because of each other." Dean said.
"So… deal is a deal. Any idea how to find your brother?" Bonnie asked.
"I have an idea or two where he might go." Dean said.
Later, Whitefish, Montana
A black 1967 Chevrolet Impala pulled over in front of a cabin as Sam Winchester exited the car and entered the cabin and sighed heavily before he grunted as he was tackled to the floor and Sam stared in disbelief at who was attacking him.
"Dean?" Sam asked before Dean poured holy water on him from a bottle. "What…? I'm not a demon!"
Bonnie splashed Sam with a container of borax cleaner.
"Or a Leviathan! What…" Sam turned to see the dark-skinned woman he had never seen before, when Dean cut him across the forearm with a silver knife as Sam hissed in pain.
"Or a shifter. Good." Dean said as Sam groaned, holding his wound.
"He's clean?" Bonnie asked and Dean nodded as he got up.
"Yeah." Dean said as he rolled up his sleeve. "My turn."
"I don't need to. I know it's you." Sam said, convinced that it was his brother before turning to Bonnie. "Who are you?"
"Dean, it's OK." Bonnie assured as she put her hand on Dean's hand before he could cut himself. "If he believes you, that should be enough."
Dean then relaxed, even though he couldn't shake off the apprehension and paranoia due to his time in Purgatory.
"Bonnie, this is my brother Sam. Sam, this is Bonnie." Dean introduced them as Bonnie offered her hand to Sam, who shook it.
"Hey." Bonnie said.
"Hi." Sam said, smiling at her. "You're a hunter?"
"No, I'm a witch." Bonnie said and Sam's eyes widened.
"A good witch. Not like those we're after." Dean added and Sam relaxed and nodded. While their experiences with witches had never been the most pleasant, he knew that not all of them were evil. "Well, then, let's do this."
"I don't know whether to give you a hug or take a shower." Sam quipped as they chuckled. Even after a year apart, it seemed like things had not changed a bit as they hugged each other and Bonnie smiled, wishing that Stefan and Damon had the same brotherly bond. They cared about each other on a certain level but Damon being unpleasant most of the times was not making it easy on anyone before Sam pulled away. "You're alive. What the hell happened?"
"I guess standing too close to Dick sends your ass straight to Purgatory." Dean said.
"You were in Purgatory?" Sam realized as his eyes widened and Dean nodded. "For a whole year?"
"I wasn't there for an entire year, by the way. Just… a couple of weeks at most. But I guess time flies, when we are fighting for our lives. We got out by working together." Bonnie said.
"What were you doing in the Purgatory in the first place?" Sam asked.
"It's a long story." Bonnie sighed. "Let's just say I was also somewhere I was not supposed to be and things took a bad turn for me, while trying to get out and ended up in the Purgatory."
"How did you get out?" Sam asked.
"I guess whoever built that box didn't want me or Bonnie there more than we did." Dean said.
"What does that mean?" Sam inquired.
"I'm here, OK? Bonnie and I helped each other and we got out together." Dean said as he and Bonnie smiled at each other.
"What about Cass? Was he there?" Sam asked and Dean and Bonnie looked at each other for a moment.
"Yeah, Cass didn't make it." Dean explained, turning back to Sam.
"What exactly does that mean?" Sam asked and Bonnie sighed.
"We all tried to get out and…" Bonnie trailed off before taking a breath. "Your friend stayed behind to buy us some time."
"So, Cass is dead? You saw him die?" Sam asked.
"I saw enough." Dean said after a moment and Sam realized that he was not going to get more out of him or Bonnie.
"So, what, you're not sure?" Sam inquired before turning to Bonnie.
"Even if he survived… we don't even know if we can bring him out and I honestly am not sure he'll survive alone there." Bonnie said.
"Right." Sam nodded. "I'm sorry."
"Me too." Dean said as they processed for a moment before Dean turned to the fridge and took out some bottles of beer. "So you… I can't believe you're actually here. You know that half your numbers are out of service. Felt like I was leaving messages in the wind."
"Yeah, I didn't read your messages because I ditched the phones." Sam explained and the phrase 'You could hear a pin drop' came to mind.
"What? Why?" Dean demanded.
"I don't hunt anymore." Sam said.
"Yeah and Sasha Grey has gone legit." Dean scoffed.
"I don't think he's joking, Dean." Bonnie said and Dean stared incredulously at Sam.
"You quit?" Dean snapped.
"Yeah. You were gone, Dean. Cass was gone. Bobby was dead. Crowley even probably shipped Kevin and Meg to parts unknown." Sam explained.
"So you turned tail on family business?" Dean demanded.
"Nothing says 'family' like the whole family being dead." Sam pointed out.
"I wasn't dead." Dean said.
"Hey…" Bonnie spoke up as they turned to her. "Look, I know it's probably none of my business or my place to say anything but… I get that you're mad, Dean. Your brother gave up on everything, but as far as he knew, everyone close to him was gone, so what was he going to do? I mean, I was a ghost for a time and no one outside of one of my friends knew and he had no idea how to explain it to others. I'm just saying, Sam didn't probably have many options on the table, so… how would he know you were alive or where you are?"
Dean crossed his arms and glared before sighing. While he was angry that his brother had given up, Bonnie raised some valid points and he was in no mood to argue anymore and decided to focus on more important matters.
"I'm still the same guy, Dean." Sam said.
"Bully for you. I'm not." Dean snapped as he went to the bathroom and Sam sighed.
"Welcome back." Sam said.
"I'm sorry." Bonnie said. This reminded her of another brotherly drama all too familiar to her. "I know it's not my place to say anything but… I guess I can understand why you quit but… I don't think you should give up on your brother yet." She said as she began thinking of Damon and Stefan.
"I know." Sam said guiltily before turning to Bonnie. "So, what's your story?"
Bonnie took a breath. "Well, have you heard of Mystic Falls?"
Sam raised eyebrows, listening.
I didn't have Dean and Sam argue about Sam giving up on hunting on trying to find and save Dean, since, honestly, while Dean's anger was understandable, that was just to stir more drama between the brothers, but still, it was a bit stupid on Sam's part to give up, considering that Crowley still had Kevin. And Dean doesn't have muddled memory of Cass staying behind, he remembers but doesn't get why Cass decided to stay behind, for now.
So, what do you guys think?
