'I'm fine,' Rosalee says, exasperated at the hawklike attention of her friends. She felt like an invalid.
'You fainted,' Adalind points out. 'We're just worried.'
'I know. I know,' Rosalee concedes.
Adalind was seated by her side, while Hank and Nick stood at the end of the bed. Nick had driven like a man possessed to the nearest hospital, immediately he'd gotten Rosalee into the car. A blaring siren helped with the traffic.
With a Doctor for company, Monroe enters the hospital room. His head injury already having been attended to with stitches. The migraine plaguing him before was also steadily retreating. He looked and felt much better now. The only sign of his previous ordeal was the headband he now spotted. That, and the hospitalized wife.
The Doctor verifies that Rosalee is indeed fine. The triplets too. Adalind, Hank and Nick are elated. The cause of her collapse? 'Low blood sugar.'
'Seriously?' Rosalee asks in disbelief.
'Seriously,' the Doctor confirms. 'When was the last time you had a meal, Miss Calvert?'
'Mrs,' she corrects. 'I've kinda been preoccupied, Doctor.'
'Hmm,' the Doctor responds, unimpressed. 'Have you by any chance, overexerted yourself lately?'
Rosalee can't help but laugh at that. Monroe and the rest of the gang join her, chuckling. They leave a very confused Doctor wondering what was funny. Monroe is the first to recover.
'I'm sorry Doctor,' he apologizes. 'We've just been through a lot. We'll be sure to do better.'
'I hope so,' the Doctor retorts. 'For your sake. And the babies'. You're free to go when ready.' With that announcement, he strolls out of the room, thinking; What a strange bunch.
'I don't think he liked us very much,' Hanks exclaims.
'I can see why,' Rosalee agrees. A remnant of the laugh still present in her voice.
'Well, that settles it. I'm making you two dinner tonight,' Adalind tells the couple.
'You don't have to. Really. We're fine.'
'Nonsense,' Adalind says, shrugging of her friends' hesitation. 'Just relax and watch me work. In fact, let's make a party of it. You're invited Hank.'
'Sure,' Hank says. 'I can eat.'
'Bring Wu too.'
'Oh, he definitely can eat!'
That elicits a burst of laughter from everyone. Adalind helps Rosalee out of bed and with her subsequent processing. The boys go looking for Father Hadrian and his contingent.
Hadrian and his contingent were nearby, getting attended to. Hadrian's wrist was massively bruised. The elephant gun had a kickback that gave credence to the moniker. The nurses gave him painkillers and other drugs that would help him heal. His wrist was to be in a caste for the time being.
Sisters Audrey and Joan had been reluctant to get treatment too, but Sister Abigail - who was suffering from a broken nose - insisted. The nose was now bandaged. My pupils are going to tease me for at least the next year. Abigail thinks to herself.
The nurses where dumbfounded by the Sisters' injuries. The wounds were obviously fresh, but were quite healed already. Something only time, medication and treatment should sequela. They were almost as equally startled by the Sisters' tattered attire beneath the habits. Tactfully, they refrained from passing comment.
Yanet had undergone a thorough check up to make sure she wasn't suffering from her previous homelessness or from her captivity at the hands of Black Claw. She was chronically underweight, but that aside, the preliminary tests for the the usual suspects came back negative. She was to come back in a few days, for a more detailed report.
Yanet is engaged in conversation with the Sisters when a knock at the door announces Monroe's arrival. Yanet breaks into a wide smile.
'You okay?' Monroe asks.
'A hospital wasn't my first choice when I daydreamed about where I'd go when I was free, But all in all, I'm good.' Yanet replies. 'How's the wife?'
'Fine. Turns out the babies were hungry.'
Yanet chuckles. Even the Sisters can't stifle a smile.
'Adalind, yes, the blond one, is making dinner tonight,' Monroe begins. 'We're having a bit of a rescue party. I was hoping you'd join us. You don't have to worry about where to go either. We'll be happy to house you for as long as you need.'
Yanet is left speechless and teary eyed. She was't used to such kindness. The emotions welling up in her render he speechless. Yanet casts her eyes down away from Monroe, almost guiltily.
'There is something I need to tell you,' she says. The Sisters join Hadrian and the Detectives outside to offer them some privacy 'I am joining the Church. I told the Sisters about Dad and everything. They explained what a Musai was and how my, my… It's all my fault. What happened to Dad. Everything!'
'No. It's not,' She fights him off his attempted hug.
'Don't touch me!' Yanet yells. Terrified her powers would activate and harm him.
Monroe draws her into him and wraps his arms around her. She struggles to break free for a few seconds, before breaking down crying. Sobbing straight into his chest.
Why she was crying? She didn't really know. Was she lamenting for her foster father or the nightmare she'd just been through? Regardless, it'd been a while since she'd felt so comforted.
Monroe was teary eyed too. With his chin on her neck, he could tell she'd woged. He kept her in his arms, nonetheless. It took some time, but finally Yanet's tears recede.
She steps arms length away and practices what Sister Abigail taught her. Take deep breaths. Will your body to accept the change. She reverts back to regular old Yanet.
'Are you sure about this?' Monroe says. 'I don't doubt the Church will treat you well but you don't have to do this. You can stay with us.'
'Thank you, but I do have to do this,' Yanet repeats. 'I can't let my powers hurt anyone again. And becoming a Nun would help me achieve that.'
Monroe draws her into him once more. 'Let me know if you ever want out, okay. I'll come get you immediately.'
Yanet smiles into his chest.
'So,' Monroe begins, addressing the Sisters. 'Yanet tells me she is to become a Nun.'
'Yes, she is,' Sister Audrey confirms. 'We'll be with her every step of the way and teach her how to control her powers. Or never use them, if possible.'
'Can that even be done?'
'We know a thing or two about living with, and yet still thriving under restrictions.' Joan, the closest Sister to Yanet in age informs Monroe. 'If the Lord is kind, she will take to it.'
'And if she doesn't?'
'She'll be free to go,' Sister Abigail says. 'The convent is not an internment. Hopefully, she would have learned enough to thrive in the outside world, but lets pray it doesn't come to that.'
'Well, Yanet will be spending a week with my wife and I.' The Bludbot tells the Balams. 'Just to be sure she really wants to do this.'
The news isn't very well received. They Sisters try convincing Yanet but she is adamant. Short of kidnapping her, the Sisters were left with no choice but to agree.
Monroe is informed Rosalee has been processed and discharged by the two Detectives and the Father. Hank thanks his old Priest for his help in rescuing Yanet and his friends. Hadrian invites him to attend mass as a gesture of his gratitude.
'You'll be seeing a lot more of me now, Father,' Monroe says to him. 'Now that Yanet is to be a part of the parish.'
'Amen,' is Hadrian's reply.
Yanet says bye to the Church contingent. Promising to turn up at the parish after a week at Monroe's. How quickly things change. For the first time in years, she felt like she had something to look forward to besides survival.
'Will I be learning a lot about other…Wessen?' She enquires as they walk off to join Adalind and Rosalee.
'I'm sure of it,' Monroe says.
'The Church has a large library of Wessen and Grimm lore,' Nick begins. 'Monroe and I were hoping to spend some time there this weekend. Wanna come?'
'Oh yes,' Yanet answers. 'I'd love that.'
Hank mutters to himself, with a shake of the head: 'Nerds.'
Adalind, with the help of Diana and Rosalee (when she is allowed to), spent the afternoon getting dinner ready. Nick and Hank went straight to the precinct from the hospital. Monroe was barred from helping so he spent the day working on a clock with Yanet.
It was time now for the rescue party. Bud is the first to arrive with a 24 pack of his namesake. Monroe is helping Diana set the table when the precinct crowd arrive.
'Guess who showed up,' Nick says to him. Hank and Wu enter with none other than Trubel behind them.
'We didn't expect to see you in Portland anytime soon,' Monroe tells her after a hug. Diana gets a high five.
'You can say that again,' Rosalee cuts in. Trubel receives two more hugs from Rosalee and Adalind.
'Is Eve coming?' Diana asks.
'Nope. She and Meisner are somewhere in the Alps,' Trubel answers, before swiping at the appetizers Yanet is laying out. 'God, I'm starving.'
'I see you haven't changed much. Go wash your hands first.' Rosalee says, pushing Trubel into the kitchen. Wu surreptitiously swipes a handful while everyone is looking away. A giggling Yanet is the only one to see him. Wu puts a finger to his lips.
'So what's up with you and Simmons,' Nick asks his partner. 'You're gonna ask her out or what?'
'I told you man,' Hank replies. 'It ain't like that.'
'It could be,' Wu speaks with his mouth full.
'Where are your manners, man?' Hank remarks. He escapes his colleagues before they can press him about Detective Simmons. 'Hand me a bear, Bud.'
'Franco found your car,' Wu tells Monroe. 'It didn't look to have been broken into but you'll have to check for yourself. You can pick it up on Monday.'
Monroe was thrilled. He was very fond of the car. Adalind then directs everyone to the sink to wash their hands. Trubel is almost halfway through a plate by the time everyone returns. Rosalee can't help but laugh this time.
Dinner goes by pleasantly. Adalind receives profuse gratitude from everyone. Bud looks to be in a food coma.
The party begins in earnest after dinner. Monroe introduces Yanet to Trubel and Diana. The young muse becomes fast friends with the two. Yanet is intrigued by the discovery Trubel is a Grimm. The two Wessen are curious about the fabledxeyes of a Grimm. They woge to see it.
'Wow,' Yanet says. Peering into Trubel's eyes 'It's like looking into a never ending abyss.'
'You should look at Diana's eyes,' Trubel retorts. Yanet shifts her focus to Diana. Her eyes appear to change colour every few seconds.
'Yours are beautiful too,' Diana says to Yanet. Referring to the Musai's elf-like features. Yanet reverts to regular form and closes the distance she'd put between them before she woged. She was getting better at it.
Adalind watches the exchange from a distance. The girls were trading homeless stories now. It was a blemish on society that for a time, all three girls had been homeless and/or moving from place to place in fear of their lives.
Adalind hears Diana tell a story about the time her other mother, Kelly, had agreed to sleep in an abandoned treehouse because Diana wanted to. Adalind wonders if she could have had a similar upbringing. Friends and a sense of belonging.
She'd been taught nothing but the pursuit of power since she was a child. Everything she learnt was to those ends. Adalind felt she couldn't really blame her mother for everything. She could have escaped at anytime but she didn't. For a time, she actually enjoyed the never-ending pursuit. A very foolish ideal now, in hindsight.
Adalind sweeps her eyes across the room, mesmerized. Bud and Wu were engrossed in a drunken discussion about wrestling. Rosalee and Monroe were in conversation with Hank. They were too far away for her to catch the topic. Diana leads Yanet to the spare room to meet her brother in. Trubel returns from the kitchen with leftovers. The girl could eat.
Adalind looks to the corner and locks eyes with Nick, who was already gazing at her. She walks over and takes a seat in his lap. Nick raises an eyebrow in silent question. Are you okay?
Adalind kisses him deeply in answer.
'I'm home.'
THE END
I'm disappointed the Sisters turned out lacklustre. The story simply did not allow me to do more with them. The plan was to write something that could pass as an actual storyline on the show. A two part midseason finale, maybe. Hopefully, I wasn't too off the mark. My apologies again for the lengthy break between chapters 3 and 4. Thank you for spending your invaluable time reading this. I hope you enjoyed it. Cheers!
