Chapter 74

Memories of a conversation held between Edward and Jasper a long time ago floated around in Jasper's mind, specifically centered around his insistence that sharing an immortal existence with someone you loved could change your entire perspective on life.

"Just say it, Jazz, before you'll burst with smugness," Edward said and looked at his brother with resigned amusement.

"Acting smug isn't my thing," Jasper replied, but his expression revealed the lie, so Edward threw the book in his hand at him, which he easily dodged. "Okay, fine. I told you, didn't I?"

"You've waited twenty-six years to say that. Did it feel good?"

"So good!" he exclaimed, and let out a loud laugh, but quickly went back to being more serious. "I'm not saying it to be a dick, but I am reveling in finally feeling some peaceful emotions from you. It's been a long time coming."

"I'm not arguing with you about that," Edward said and smiled as he watched Bella converse with Esme in the kitchen while the latter tended to a few of her many plants around the house. "Bella's made all the difference, and I almost ruined it with my stubbornness. If I'd only pulled my head out of my ass sooner and listened to her, we could have saved ourselves a lot of arguments."

Jasper hummed. "Don't take all the blame, though. Bella's quite stubborn herself."

Edward laughed. "Don't I know it." He turned his head back toward Jasper. "She told me something today at school. Apparently, you two are quite close in our alternate universe, and she'd like to explore the same possibility here."

"I understood as much with the way Other Bella gravitated toward me. But would you be okay with that? I'm keeping my distance because I respect you, you know."

"And I appreciate that, but I think I've been too harsh with you." Edward grimaced apologetically. "I don't doubt that you can control yourself around her, and you protected her in Phoenix when I couldn't. I can never repay you for that." He looked back toward Bella. "If I can desensitize myself from the scent of her blood, I know you can, too, and staying away isn't the way to do it."

Jasper looked pleased and almost appeared to grow with the confidence boost Edward's trust gave him. "I'll look forward to really getting to know my new sister."

A/N:

When I first started writing fanfiction, or even before that and I'd just read the books and seen 1 or 2 movies, Jasper wasn't a favorite of mine. It could be because he doesn't get a whole lot of time spent on his character in the books or movies. He's got that one thing in Eclipse, and that's it.

As I've grown older, I definitely like him more, have more sympathy for him, and enjoy the complexity of his gift and "lack of self-control". I often find myself doing what I can to justify his struggles in my later work.

I know I have a few Jasper-fans in my readership so I hope this was something you enjoyed as well :)
