Chapter 78
"Edward, I..." Bella was speechless. They'd very briefly talked about marriage while switched, but she hadn't expected a proposal so soon after. "I can't believe you hijacked my surprise like that," she said, completely forgoing any attempt at acting like a girl from 1917.
"I'm sorry," he said with a cheeky smile. "I didn't plan it. I just got caught in the moment."
She blinked and tried to make sense of his words. "So you aren't proposing right now?"
He picked up the ring from her palm and held it between his thumb and index finger while reaching for her left hand. "I'm just indulging myself. I know you don't want to wear it yet or even think about announcing an engagement before graduation, so I won't force you or try to persuade you into feeling differently. However, you have already agreed to becoming my wife one day, and wearing my mother's ring while dressed like a girl I'd have gladly brought home and introduced to her would make me the happiest man alive."
Bella looked at the ring again and realized the value it had to him. His mother's ring, and he only asked her to wear it for the day. How could she possibly say no to that no matter what her own aversion to everything marriage-related was?
"I'd also love to hear you say yes just once," he continued. "So Miss Isabella Swan... will you, one day, marry me?"
She had promised him a day with memories he'd cherish forever, so she couldn't deny him. There wasn't even a part of her that wanted to deny him because she was his, now and forever. With or without a ring. So she met his gaze steadily and gave him the sweetest and most loving smile she could muster, and that he would always remember.
"Yes, Edward. I will marry you."
His answering smile was as radiant as if she had made all of his dreams come true with those few words. He happily slid the ring onto her finger before cupping her face and giving her a kiss she'd never forget.
"I love you, Bella," he whispered against her lips. "And every day, I fall deeper in love with you. Spending an eternity together won't be enough."
"I'm glad we're finally on the same page."
A/N:
It never sat right with me that, in the Saga, Edward forced Bella to marry him when she so clearly didn't want it, and then SM just smoothed it over with "Oh no, it's fine. She just didn't realize she'd enjoy being married until she already was!"
Ever since that moment in the BD book and then the movie, it's been this huge thing in book/fic world where the finale must include a wedding as if that's the pinnacle of a successful relationship instead of focusing on the couple actually learning to respect each other.
So, I decided on this "half" proposal where Edward plainly shows his intentions and wishes without telling Bella she must agree in order to get something in return. Instead, he respects her boundaries and it pays off because now she's more inclined to fulfill his wishes.
You don't have to agree with me. Of course you can have your own opinion about weddings and all of that. I just don't see them as the best solution and definitely not as a part of a transactional deal :P
I will see you again tomorrow, so until then,
Stay Awesome!
