Chapter 2
The guard came down and called the saddle club, Josh, his sister, Phil and Rafael to the doors of the cells and let them out.
"You are all free to go," he said, "Chewie, the guy who run's JB's, swears none of you started the fight."
"Oh, I know who started the fight!" growled Stevie
"Simmer down, Stevie." Said Carole
"Simmer down?" snapped Stevie, "We just spent 2 hours and 45 minutes in a jail cell thanks to those guys!"
She turned and leveled a glare at Phil.
"Okay Phil," she snapped, "What have you got to say for yourself?!"
"Stevie I'm sorry," said Phil, "The guys just got a little carried away."
"A little carried away?!" cried Stevie, "They started a free-for-all and let us take the blame for it! real friends don't do that! Now are you going to tell the sheriff who really started that fight?!"
"Stevie," said Phil looking shocked at the idea, "I can't turn stool pigeon, the guys would never speak to me again!"
"And that's a loss?!" Lisa grumbled sarcastically looking unimpressed with Phil's way of thinking.
"Well, if you won't turn them in, I will!" snapped Stevie. She turned and stormed through the doorway leading out of the holding area.
"Oh, come on Stevie," Phil pleaded almost whining as he chased after her, "Don't be like this!"
The next day at Pine Hollow the gang all stood in the lounge looking at Stevie incredulously.
"Oh, come on guys quit looking at me like that," said Stevie shifting uncomfortably. On the couch, under their stares.
"I can't believe it," said Lisa, "I just can't believe it. I can't believe that you actually let Phil talk you out of reporting those guys!"
"I know," grumbled Stevie, "I can hardly believe it myself. I was going to turn those two idiots in, I really was, but then I got scared that if I did, Phil would never speak to me again!"
"You're gonna regret this!" said Carole, "Mark my words."
Just then Mrs. Reg walked into the room.
"Mrs. Reg," asked Lisa worriedly, "Are Josh and Jamie okay?"
Mrs. Reg nodded.
"They're fine." She said
"We're sure sorry about that mess last night." Said Carole
"It's alright," said Mrs. Reg, "Both I and Josh and Jamie's parents know that it wasn't your fault."
Meanwhile…Over in guest Cabin number 2 Josh was sitting in the leaving room reading a text from his parents when his sister walked into the room clad in a candy pink bathrobe. She had just taken a shower and was combing her still damp hair as she walked from the bathroom back to her bedroom.
Josh looked up and stopped short. the irises of his sisters eyes which were normally blue, were silver-white!
"Hey sis," said Josh. When she made eye contact, he tapped his armband.
Jamie looked down and realized that she wasn't wearing hers.
"Oh shoot!" she exclaimed, "I forgot to put my armband back on after I got out of the shower!"
She spun on her heel and became a streak like blur of motion as she raced back to the bathroom at incredible speed!"
She came walking back a moment later with her arm band on and her eyes blue again.
"Be careful doing that sis," said Josh, "Not everyone here knows our secret and if you get seen moving like that, the cat will be out of the bag!"
"Sorry, Josh," she said, "It's really hard for me to control my speed when I'm not wearing my regulator."
Josh's expression softened.
"I know," he said, "I had the same problem when I was your age."
"Do you think that the girls here would be afraid of us if they knew our secret?" asked Jamie and hint of sadness creeping into her voice.
"I don't know, but I'd like to think they'd be okay with it." Replied Josh, "They all seem very nice."
"Yeah," smiled Jamie thinking of her new friends Jess and Melanie, "And besides were all ex-cons." She joked.
Josh laughed.
"I'm glad you're not to upset by that mess last night." He said smiling
"Well, it was a little scary at the time," Replied Jamie, "But it seems kind of funny now!"
Josh and Jamie went out to go for a hack. Josh rode Comanche and Jamie rode Diamond. They rode up the main trail and eventually came to a spot where the main trail intersected with several other trails. it was a place called "The Crossroads".
As they arrived, the Saddle Club as well as Melanie and Jess who had tagged along appeared from another direction. After they'd exchanged greetings, they started up the main trail together. They all rode up to the quarry and hung out for a while letting their horses and ponies graze.
The girls were trying to get Josh to join them in a game of truth or dare, when suddenly the tranquility of the spot was shattered by the unmistakable roar of dirt bikes!
Jamie was just coming back from getting her canteen off her saddle that Josh had hung on a low tree branch for her after she took it off of Diamond to give him a break.
Josh realized that the dirt bikes were about to come over the bank right behind where his sister was.
"Jamie, look out!" he cried
Without hesitation Jamie dove out of the way just a split second before the bikes roared into view launching themselves off the bank and jumping clear over her. They landed right in the middle of the clearing forcing Josh and the girls to scatter off the blankets they were sitting on and dive out of the way. Diamond and Patch didn't even bat an eye, but the other horses spooked and took off.
"Mind if we join the party?!" exclaimed one of the dirt bikers
Stevie instantly recognized the voice.
"DeLuca," she cried, "You're gonna pay for this!"
No sooner were these words out of her mouth, than his buddy Collin Van Cleef suddenly spotted Jamie's arm band and ripped it off her arm!
"What have we got here?!" he sneered, "Some new kind of watch?!"
"Hey, give it back!" cried Jamie covering her eyes with her hand.
