Alyssa unlocked the door of her new house, she had sold her house in Burnaby for over the asking price and was able to buy a larger home in Seattle. She had agreed to a three year contract with Mountainside engineering as part of the team opening the new Seattle office and would start in two months when her maternity leave was up.
"Big day," Owen said, coming up the porch steps behind Alyssa.
"Yep the girls and I are here for three weeks then mom and Faroke move in," Alyssa said, "until she can sort out her own place. It's temporary."
"Lyss it's a good idea for all of you," Owen said, "your girls are only 11 months old. Faroke still needs a lot of support. Your mom is really trying with you."
"I know," Alyssa replied.
"You went to her first about Matt leaving," Owen said.
"I was scared to tell you and auntie Teddy that I failed," Alyssa whispered, "I couldn't tell you. You put so much into making sure I had a stable home that how could I tell you I couldn't give my girls that."
"Lyss when I had custody of you we weren't totally stable," Owen said, "financially yes. My relationships no. Christina and I were rocky but we hid it from you. I'd tell you she was on call or would switch days with Teddy. We kept our issues away from you. You didn't need to know or be involved. The worst thing for you would have been to be caught in the middle. Stability means keeping their environment as normal as possible. Your girls were three months old when Matt left. They won't remember him living with them. Alyssa you are doing everything you can to give them stability. It's all I did, Teddy or your mom."
"But you didn't choose, you had to," Alyssa said.
"I chose you, I had a choice and I chose you," Owen said, "Lyss I couldn't walk away from you any more than I could from Allison or Leo or Hannah. Lyss we couldn't walk away from you. I have 4 kids."
"I chose," Alyssa said, "having kids. Stopping birth control was my idea. Matt wasn't sure but said he was open to it if I was sure so we did. I was sure. I was so sure I was ready for kids and to be a mom. I didn't expect twins. I know grandma has a twin but fraternal twins that's just a fluke."
"A gift," Owen said, "Alyssa you are doing it. You are getting your family into a stable home. You chose to come back to Seattle. You could have run anywhere, you could have stayed but you choose to come home. You came home where you have people who love you. We're here and we always support you. Alyssa, you are doing the right thing. You made the right decision."
"I'm scared," Alyssa whispered.
"I know kiddo," Owen said, "I know. I also know that you are brave, adaptable and strong."
"I can't do this," Alyssa cried, breaking down for the first time since the day she had faced Matt in the lawyers office..
"You can," Owen assured.
"I don't know how to be a mom alone," Alyssa cried, "I don't know where to start. I have no clue what to do."
"Then you ask me, your mom, auntie Teddy, grandma," Owen said hugging her, "you can do this. You are not alone. You will not be alone. I know being alone is your biggest fear. I know you're terrified right now. I know Alyssa. Shh Lyss you're okay. It will be okay. When you're ready we'll move your stuff in and the movers come with your furniture this afternoon. You can do this. Alyssa you are able to do this."
"Were you scared," Alyssa asked.
"Yes," Owen said.
"Should I be scared," Alyssa asked.
"Yes," Owen said, "because it means you care, it means you have something to lose that you love more than anything . You want everything for Alex and Celeste. I was scared. I was scared when Megan brought you home as an infant. . I was scared when I got custody of you and moved you into my house, I was scared when Leo came home, I was terrified when Allison was born and Teddy was in so much pain. I was scared when the social worker brought Hannah home. I've been scared to bring all of you home. But we move through it. And you are not going to do it alone. You have me, your mom, Teddy, grandma. We are all here."
"I can't do this," Alyssa whined.
"You have to," Owen replied, "Alyssa this is a fresh start, a new beginning. You can do this."
"I'll always be alone with my kids," Alyssa said, "no man will ever want me now. Mom found Nathan but that was a miracle. And I know they broke up but they're still friends and if she hadn't been captured they might have gotten married and it would have worked. They told Faroke and I that they became two different people when mom was being held captive. That they love and care about each other but they can't be a couple right now."
"You will find someone," Owen assured, "it might not be instant but you will find a partner."
"How," alyssa asked.
"When your ready you can try online," Owen suggested.
"My girls," alyssa said.
"Will always come first," Owen agreed, "you always did and I still dated and married Christina and Amelia."
"But I was a teenager and in college," alyssa replied.
"You being happy is good modeling," Owen said, "be happy kiddo. Your mom is right about that find everything possible to be happy."
In LA Megan and Nathan were packing up the house.
"I'm sorry," Megan said looking at him.
"I am too," he replied, "I wanted it to work. I dreamed of it for 12 years. I wanted to make us work. I'm sorry Meg."
"I did two," Megan agreed, "but I think I tried to force it all. With you and Alyssa."
"She's coming to you now," Nathan replied.
"Starting to. Only about her kids and her break up," Megan replied.
"It's a start Meg," Nathan said, "I know I'm going to be involved in Farokes life. How do you feel about me being in Alyssa's life?"
"I will leave that between you and her," Megan said, "you were ready to be her stepdad when she was a tiny little peanut."
"When I proposed the first time I was going to bring up the possibility of adopting Alyssa and doing what we did with Faroke," Nathan explained.
"I will not stop you from being in her life," Megan replied.
"And I want to know Alex and Celeste," Nathan said, "I know she chose uncle Nathan but they're my granddaughters."
"Nate I'm not going to stop you," Megan said, "our kids and our granddaughters need all the love they can get. I'm disappointed but I'm not angry."
"I know when you're angry," he chuckled.
"And it's no one's fault," Megan replied, "it just is. I will always care about you. And I want us to be good friends. You going to Seattle Prysbatarin is one of the reasons I've applied to Grey Sloan. Our son needs both of us in the same city. We're going to have to work out custody I guess."
"Not as formally as Alyssa," Nathan said, "he's 15. I say he lives with you and is with me when your in call or working overnight. It worked for Owen and Altman."
"We can talk to Faroke about it," Megan replied,
"We're living with Alyssa so he might choose to stay with her."
"I do want to see him," Nathan said.
"I know and I will encourage it," Megan agreed.
"I hate that we came to this," Nathan said, gesturing to the room filled with boxes.
"So do I," Megan agreed, "it's hard to grasp splitting up our life and taking apart our dreams. I hate it."
"You hate the ending and feeling out of control,"
Nathan said.
"I do," Megan agreed, she wiped tears from her eyes.
"Meg," Nathan sighed.
"It makes me sad," she sniffled.
"Me two," he agreed he walked across the room and hugged her. He just wanted to hold her and assure her she wasn't alone. He knew she was starting over again, he was too but to her the loss felt bigger. He loved her, he always would, but they had decided to be friends and go from there. He felt her begin to sob and held her close.
"Meg you can do this," Nathan assured, "think how much time you'll spend with Lyss and Alex and Celeste."
Megan nodded, "it's just letting go of the dream that kept me alive."
"I hear you," Nathan agreed, "we can do it together. We'll do it as friends."
"You're my best friend," Megan whispered, "I don't have many friends my time away and then lock down. I have you and Teddy."
"Go to Seattle and try to reconnect with old friends," Nathan suggested.
"I guess," Megan said, "we'll still hang out?"
"We will," Nathan promised, "we will be in each other's lives."
