AN: so it turns out I can't write without proper keys on a keyboard/laptop as I only got two sentences in while on holiday on a touchscreen (with pesky auto-correct on) before I gave up, so I'm a little behind now and trying to catch up.
This was what she had always wanted. Moments like this, memories made with her family without hiding who she was and where she came from. A chance to be Kara Zor-El and Kara Danvers.
Alex had thrown her the not-so-surprise party (she had super-hearing so of course she heard the whispers) where the only real surprise was that Lena had been invited too. After Kara had revealed herself as Supergirl, Alex had freaked out. She'd gotten Lena to sign an NDA, then kept close tabs on all of Lena's calls and messages in case she planned on telling her brother. So far the surveillance hadn't shown anything. Kara knew her sister still didn't trust the Luthor, but she'd invited her to a Game Night when it was at her apartment and everyone had seemed to get along.
Now her friends and family were all together, playing party games and laughing, having fun. Lena came up to her, as she stood watching them all from the kitchen, a smile on her face.
"It's been a long time since someone beat me at chess, your friend Brainy certainly earns his name," Lena told her.
"And doesn't hesitate to remind us," Kara joked, "but you did really well, he lost a lot of pieces."
To make it more interesting, Alex had suggested for each piece lost the player should take a drink. They had both ben reduced to a handful of pieces before Brainy got the upper hand and won.
"This has been fun. I'm glad I came."
"Me too. I mean, I'm glad you came."
Lena took a step closer to Kara, placing an empty glass down on the counter, "I know it wasn't easy for to trust me and tell me your secret, but I promise that I would never betray you."
"I know, you're a good person Lena."
"I'm trying to be. You make it easier, give me someone to look up to. As Kara, not Supergirl."
"Really?" Kara nervously tucked her hair behind her ear as she looked at Lena.
"Yes. Supergirl is the mask that the world sees, that it needs to see, but I see you Kara. Your kindness, your compassion. Supergirl can save the world with her powers but you are the one who wants to help everyone."
"Oh, well..."
"I'm glad I moved LCorp to National City, and that I got to meet you."
Lena jumped as the music in the background changed to a louder song, and she blinked, looking around as if only just realising how close she was to Kara. She shook her head and took a step back.
"I think I've had a little too much to drink," she said, "I should probably head home."
"Lena," Kara reached out a hand, gently placing it on her arm, "I'm glad you came to National City too."
Lena smiled at her, and Kara thought she recognised something in her gaze that she was feeling herself. "Happy birthday, Kara."
"Cake time!" Alex yelled from the other room, giving them a little warning that she was on her way.
Perhaps they had all been drinking a little too much, Kara thought as her sister stumbled into the kitchen. Lena slipped out, un-noticed as Alex removed the cake from the fridge. Kara took the lighter from Alex before she could hurt herself lighting the candles, catching the cake as Alex's elbow nearly knocked it off the counter.
As she carried her birthday cake into the other room, her eyes met Lena's again and she felt the same jolt as before. Kara blew out the candles, making a new wish for the first time in years.
