A glass of water was such a small and silly thing to cry over, but it had slipped from her hand and lay in jagged, sharp pieces on the floor around her, water seeping into her socks, soaking her feet. Lena stood in her kitchen, crying. She couldn't even bring herself to move and clear up the mess.
Kara had finally told her the truth, had revealed her secret identity, but it was too late. Lena already knew. Had known for a long time now. She told herself that she wasn't crying about Kara, she was just tired and breaking the glass on top of her already stress-filled week hadn't helped.
"Miss Luthor," the light from her latest creation, an AI she had named Hope, came on and spoke to her, "are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you, Hope."
"You are crying."
Lena forced herself to wipe away her tears, to calm her breathing, "everything is okay."
"Would you like to run another simulation?"
"Not tonight."
She'd faced Kara once already today, held her anger and pain at bay, but now it came crashing back through her. Lena tried to remember where she kept a dustpan and brush so that she could sweep up the glass. She moved carefully around the mess, pulling a few squares of kitchen roll to lay over the water.
When Kara landed on her balcony an hour later, Lena had already closed the blinds, shutting out the world.
Hope alerted Lena to the Kryptonian's presence. Lena was sitting on her bathroom floor, her eyes closed as she tried to steady her breathing, waiting for Kara to leave. She'd just finished bandaging her foot, after stepping on a small piece of broken glass on the floor that she'd missed when cleaning up. If she stayed still, hopefully Kara would think she was already asleep. She didn't have the energy to move right now anyway.
Lena tried to focus her mind on anything else, running over the calculations for her next project, ignoring the pain in her foot.
"Lena?"
There was a knock on the bathroom door. Lena frowned, she thought she'd locked the balcony door and didn't expect Kara to enter without asking. Apparently the bathroom door was enough to keep her out though.
"Are you okay?" Kara called through again, when there was no answer.
Lena managed to get to her feet, wincing at the pain as she put pressure on her injury, "I'm fine."
There was silence, but Lena knew Kara was still there.
"Can you come out? I've been worried about you."
Lena shook her head, why would Kara worry after finally admitting the truth to her? Her hand hovered over the handle of the door. She took a deep breath and opened it.
"I said I'm fine," she told Kara, standing in the doorway.
"It's just, when I told you... I don't know, you seemed..."
"I already knew," Lena admitted, meeting Kara's gaze, daring her to look away first.
"Oh. How long...?"
"Long enough for it to sink in that you'd been lying to me for years," Lena let a little of her anger show before getting it back under control.
"I was trying to protect you."
"Protect your secret, you mean. After all, I am a Luthor, right?"
"No! It wasn't that, I..."
"Go away Kara."
"I'll... I'll come back tomorrow, we can talk then."
Lena shook her head, "there's nothing to say."
"Lena, I..." Kara looked down, finally noticing the bandage, "oh no, what happened?"
"It's nothing. Just a small cut."
Kara quickly x-rayed it, she could see there was still a small piece in Lena's foot. She rushed through the apartment, grabbing a pair of tweezers from a nail kit and ran back to Lena.
"I can manage," Lena told her, reaching for the tweezers, but Kara shook her head.
"No, either you let me take it out or I'm taking you to a hospital."
"Really? Don't you think Supergirl taking Lena Luthor to the hospital for such a small injury is a waste of a superhero's time?"
"I think taking my friend to hospital when she's hurt is the right thing to do," Kara countered.
Lena wanted to tell her that the pain from her lie hurt more, but that couldn't be fixed by a hospital. She pressed her lips tightly together and walked back into the bathroom to perch on the edge of the bath. Unwrapping her foot, she tried to see the piece of glass she had missed, but it was too small or too deep into her foot.
"Let me," Kara told her, coming to kneel in front of her, holding up the tweezers.
Lena didn't reply, just watched as Kara gently took her foot in one hand and moved the tweezers into position. She closed her eyes as the glass was pulled out, a sharp hiss of pain escaping through her lips.
"Sorry, maybe I should have cooled your foot a little to numb it first," Kara told her.
"It's fine. I'll re-bandage it. You can go," Lena held out a hand for the tweezers.
Kara bit her lip but handed them over, "you're my best friend, Lena."
"How many other 'friends' did you share your secret with before me?"
"I don't want to lose you from my life."
"I'm sure we'll see each other around."
Kara looked down at the piece of glass in her hand, then back up at Lena, "what can I do to fix this? Fix us."
"Not everything that gets broken can be fixed by having superpowers."
"You think I don't know that? I lost my whole planet, my family and friends when I was just a child. Please, I don't want to lose you too."
"Why? What makes me so special?"
"Because..."
"Because I'm a Luthor and you want to prove to your cousin that you can keep one of us on your side?"
"Because I love you! Because lying to you was the hardest secret to keep, but if I told you and by some miracle you felt the same way then you'd be in even more danger. If I told you who I was I would want to tell you how I felt, and..."
Lena stood up from the edge of the bath and grabbed the front of Kara's jacket, "you really think I would have cared? That my life hasn't been in danger for one reason or another for years? Have you seen the number of assassination attempts on my life since I moved here?"
"I..."
"You are so... stupid!" Lena released Kara, stepping to the side to try and walk around her.
"Lena, wait!"
Lena kept on walking, "I'm tired, Kara."
"Can we talk, in the morning at least, please?"
Lena waited until she was at her bedroom door to answer, "fine. Tomorrow we can talk."
She didn't look back at Kara, couldn't bear to see her now. After hiding her feelings for so long she was surprised she hadn't kissed Kara after her confession. Now she was afraid that if she saw Kara, she would be thinking of nothing else and she needed time to think. A good night's sleep would help.
