Don't do it , Chapter 9
London 2010
On the way to London was discussed about tickets to book for Thursday. It was a 12:05pm non-stop flight with Austrian Airlains from London Heathrow to Dulles International Washington D.C., arriving 3:45pm that they got.
They spent another day with Cliegg, Owen and Beru. Padme thought this is his family, soon maybe her family too. Cliegg liked her straight away. Beru was very likeable and with Owen, she wasn't wondering why Anakin couldn't connect with him like that. Owen wasn't bad, he was just way too quiet, too introverted, no temper at all.
And then something came up that Padme hadn't expected, although she didn't want to be a part of it. At teatime they were all sitting comfortably together, just as Padmé was about to tell Beru that she must have the recipe for the scones, Cliegg started talking.
"Owen, Anakin...I have an appointment with my attorney next week. I decided to have a will drawn up...you never know when something could happen to you. Everything I own shall be shared between you two. If neither of you can, or wants to move into this house, it should be sold. You should keep the cottage, perhaps keep it for your children, that would be my wish. The country makes good money, but... whatever you want. Yes, and one more thing. I bought you, Owen, the house in Edinburgh and gave you money to seed the company. When Shmi and I got married I took out a £5,000,000 term life insurance policy for Shmi and for the benefit of Anakin and paid the premiums all those years. You get paid out for that now, Anakin."
"I don't know what to say, Dad."
"Nothing. I saw you as a son when I married your mother, nothing has changed."
"Do you feel disadvantaged in any way, Owen?" Anakin asked
"No, you're my brother…..although we've never been that close, but there are brothers in blood who aren't that close. I think it's just our temperament that's always stood between us, not envy or jealousy."
"Good to hear, I think so too."
They sat there, Anakin and Padmé talking about the days they spent at the cottage, Cliegg couldn't believe Padmé was so pleased that she could live there. Afterwards we had dinner together and then Padmé wanted to go upstairs to pack.
"One more word with you Anakin." Cliegg said.
Padmé wondered, but left. Anakin and Cliegg went into the study. Anakin sat in the chair in front of the desk and waited for what Cliegg had to say to him. Cliegg went to one painting on the wall and took it down. Anakin's eyes fell on a safe. He didn't know one was there. Cliegg entered the code and the door opened. He took out two small boxes and closed the safe again.
"Here Anakin, this is your mother's engagement ring, family heirloom, very old, as is this diamond brooch from your father's family...only one saved from sale. Your grandmother Leia gave it to Shmi when she married your father."
"Are my grandparents still alive?"
"No, not for a long time. Yeah, I know you never cared about hethem, your title, or what's left of the country. Mom and I did it. The land does not yield much, it is leased and covers the costs, sometimes there is still something left over. I will continue to manage it, don't worry."
Certainty, whatever it is, is better than none, Anakin thought.
"Now what I want to say to you as a father, you have no one else, is...how shall I put it...marry Padme."
"It's still too early, we haven't been together that long..."
"….but a child on the way, huh? Anakin...you know you can't claim the child unless you're married, it won't even bear your name let alone your title. That would not be worthy of your status."
"That is not important for me."
"It's important, think about it. I know your mother would want it."
"But...but I'm still in mourning..."
"This is a special situation. You don't have to celebrate that great. Get married quietly in Las Vegas."
"It wouldn't be fair to her parents."
"I'm sure they would understand and I'm sure her father would like to see her married. Don't wait the baby to be born, or drag her down to altar with her big belly."
"I have to think about it."
"Anakin, no matter what your birth father was like, he did the right thing."
After a long pause he nodded.
"You're right."
"By the way, I let my lawyer send all the necessary forms to the insurance company yesterday. In a few days you will have the money on your account. I gave your account with Lloyds Banking Group. You can then transfer wherever you want."
"Thanks. How do you want to live your life now, Dad?"
"I'll spend a lot of time in the cottage now, more involved with administration and the stud farm I've bought. I will also spend some time in Edinburgh with Owen and Beru..."
"You must come to us too, Dad, especially when the baby comes."
"Yeah, I can't wait to be a grandfather."
"What about Owen and Beru, why don't they still have children? Should I try to help somehow?"
"Beru has a problem, but you can talk to Owen."
"I'll do it."
"So you're flying back tomorrow, let me know when you've landed and we'll keep skyping, Sundays, as usual, OK.?"
"Yes, dad."
"Don't forget what I told you."
"I won't, dad."
On Thursday, after breakfast, Padmé and Anakin said goodbye to his family and took a taxi to London Heathrow. After checking in, they had a little time to buy something and went to the gate. They boarded the plane at 11:45am local time. Scheduled departure 12:05pm was kept and they were glad to be in Washington D.C. soon.
Flight to Washington D.C. 2010
"I'm glad not to be so plagued, it's bearable."
The flight captain stated:
"We have reached the intended flight altitude of 33,000 feet. I wish you a pleasant flight."
"Angel, you said I was snooty."
"Yes." she smiled.
"Then the height we are at fits to a marriage proposal: Padmé Amidala Naberrie, do you want to be my wife?" He took her hand and put it to his heart.
"Anakin! ….are you serious?"
"Seriously, Padme."
"I...I don't know what to say...I..."
"Say yes."
silence…eye contact…..wait…..
"Yes."
Finally… He took the box out of his jacket pocket and opened it. Then he took the precious old diamond ring and slipped it onto her finger.
"I love you Angel. This ring has been in my family for generations as an engagement ring, I hope you will enjoy wearing it."
"With pride….My Lord. When do we tell my parents?"
"As soon as possible and then we're flying to Las Vegas to get married."
"Why is this in such a hurry...and a few days ago your mother died and..."
"We are not waiting for this traditional year of mourning, just a few weeks. It's a special situation. I've thought about it and I don't want my child to be born out of wedlock."
"I just said yes and I want to marry you, but at first you didn't want to rush it, what's the matter, you have been taken to responsibility?"
"Padmé, I wouldn't have been taken to responsibility if I didn't love you. At the beginning I wanted to be with you because of the child, but I realized very quickly that this desire to be with you is love for you. Of course I want the child and I'm glad it's on the way...but you are the priority."
"What if it doesn't work out for us, I'm scared Anakin."
"Why? Look, we're not teenagers, we're adults and we can think rationally. Problems will arise, everyone has problems, but if we talk rational with each other, we can solve all problems. All of life is a compromise. If we want to live together we will compromise….for love of each other and our children."
"Children?"
"Yes, children. There is nothing more beautiful in the world than making children with you. I love you my Angel."
"I love you too. We're flying to Boston tomorrow, it's a flight of only one and a half hour. What do you think? I've spoken to my parents from London, they think it's inappropriate to just condole over the phone and they can't all go to Washington D.C. come, the girls are at school."
"Fine, but that's exhausting for you, isn't it?"
"Not as bad as I thought and feared."
The flight lasted more than eight hours, but due to the time difference, the six hours that will be too much for sleep compensation won.
Washington D.C. 2010
When they got home, they found they were tired.
"We mustn't fall asleep now, otherwise the jet lag will come through. Oh yeah, call Ben, tell him we're flying to Boston tomorrow. He will definitely want to come."
"I'll do it. We don't have anything in the fridge, Angel."
"It's not worth going shopping if we're gone tomorrow. We're going to eat somewhere and tomorrow we'll have breakfast somewhere on the way to the airport. I'll book the tickets right now."
"You do everything for us, I feel so useless."
"Nonsense Anakin. Everyone is doing what they can in the moment and if we move in together...are we going to move in together now? It all came so quickly, we have a lot to talk about."
"Tonight...maybe, if we have time..."
"You mean because of the jet lag?"
"No, I didn't mean jet lag, Angel."
"Oh, OK. Now let's take a shower and go eat." She winked.
They loaded the washing machine, got dressed and went out to eat something simple.
"What do we do now, Angel? We're moving in together, okay? ...Washington D.C. or Laurel?"
"It's nonsense to live apart and nonsense is living in Washington D.C. , to stay in my apartment. The baby is coming in a few months and a nursery is needed. You rented big house, it has everything we need. The stupid thing is, what about my furniture?"
"We can sell my living room furniture and your king-size bed, we're keeping the rest. I miss Chesterfield." He smiled.
"We still have to buy a queen-size bed for guest room... and of course set up baby room. There's so much to do, but we just have to pack, movers will do the rest. I think it all can be done before we fly to Las Vegas. Do we really have to do this now, Anakin?"
"Yes my Angel, end of January. We'll pick a weekend, fly your family and mine, Ben and Sabé, get married in a civil ceremony and eat together. That's all. When we return to Washington D.C. , l'll let confirme the marriage acknowledge in the British Consulate, that's important only for me."
"How so?"
"Because of the child's citizenship and continuation of the title for our son later:"
"The son after all." She laughed.
"Now or later, we'll have one, Angel."
Afterwards, Padmé booked a flight to Boston for tomorrow Friday, United Airlines, departing 8:55am, arriving Logan International 10:28am….perfect.
"Anakin..."
"Yes Angel..."
"I am tired."
"We go to sleep."
"Anakin..."
"Yes…."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Anakin..."
"Yes Angel..."
"May I call you Ani?"
"That's just my mother called me."
"But I also love you as much as she loved you, different but so much...may I...?
"Yes Angel."
She snuggled up to him and soon passed into the realm of dreams. Anakin stayed awake, wondering if he had come up too soon with the marriage proposal. He loved her, no question... only it was all so new for both of them. Neither of them have had a real relationship until now and didn't know how to adjust, that they had to adjust. Yes, they were both almost 30, adults, but because of that it might be difficult to fit in, they were already formed in their personality. It'll be all right, he thought. He was not stubborn and headstrong, but he will have to give in on many things without giving up on himself. What was there anyway what he wouldn't or couldn't give up for her and the child? There was nothing so important to him that she couldn't bear. Actually nothing. What could be more important than enjoying the life with a wife and child, with family. That's the meaning of life. There are only things which make life more beautiful, such as parents, siblings, friends and he had that and she also attached great importance to it. Then nothing can really go wrong…..but there was still work, the career. The sticking point. They will have to talk about it again and again. He didn't want to think about it now and forced himself to calm down and sleep.
Very early Padmé had to get up to throw up. Here we go again, she thought. Anakin got up immediately and helped her hold her head, hold her hair. She brushed her teeth and immediately went to take a shower, he did the same.
"Do you have anything in the fridge? You gotta grab a bite, if there's nothing I'll run down to Toastique to get some sandwiches for us , OK."
"Yes, please."
He dressed quickly and left. She kept asking herself why he is so different from everyone else. Neither Palo nor Rush would do such a thing for her, they would have made fun of it. He loved her, that must be it. That's why she has to be willing to do her best, to accommodate always, to give him as much as he gives her. She knew she was ready for it, for what she wanted...for him, for her child, for the family she will have.
It didn't take long, Toastique was just 250m down the road. He took two plates and put the sandwiches on them.
"Would you like some more tea?"
"Yes. I'm still nauseous, but I know I have to eat or I'll throw up on the plane."
"Here Angel. Have you packed everything yet?"
"Yes Ani, everything."
"Ani... when you say it, it sounds so... loving." He kissed her.
"Because I love you, Ani. Go and bring our bags to the door, I'll clean up here."
After a short time they were already in front of the entrance and were waiting for the taxi. It was early in the morning and there weren't that many travelers at Dulles International. Since they checked in online, half an hour before departure was enough.
"Are you still sick?"
"No longer. I just hope it wouldn't torment me in Boston."
The departure was according to plan and as soon as they reached the flight altitude, the descent began. Padmé was excited to see the family again after such a short time and was a little excited about how the family would take the news.
