Chapter 16: On the Train)
I can't believe we're almost there, David. Neither can I, dear. It seems like it was only yesterday that we met by the pond on your father's ranch. And now we're married and we have three children. Are we there yet, Mama? Almost,Annie. Will there be cowboys and horses where we're going? Oh, yes, Henry. There will be a lot of them. And you'll get to meet The Virginian and Trampas and Randy. And from what the Virginian told me in his letters, Randy has a little girl living with him that's just about the age you and your sister are, Virginia. What's her name,Mama? Her name is Ellie, Virginia. And you remember what I told you about the Virginian and Trampas and Randy, right? Of course we do, Mama. You told us that you've always loved them like they were your own brothers. Does that make them our family too, Mama? Of course it does, Annie. And they'll love all of you very much. Before I married your daddy and left home, The Virginian told me that I'd be back with a bunch of kids that he and Trampas and Randy would teach to ride and everything. Well, it looks like we're at the Medicine Bow train station. So we'd better get our bags and rent a buggy to get out to Shiloh. And you're going to love your family. I know we will, Mama. You've told us about them so many times that we can see them in our imaginations. I only wish that you all could have had a chance to know your grandma. And you're named for her you know, Annie. I know, Mama.
