On Tuesday, September 15, 1992, Heather declared that at 1 P.M. that afternoon, all school clubs at Skyward School of Practical Sorcery would have their second meetings.

Harry entered the Broom Club Room at 1 P.M. and was greeted by Cedric, Scott, Anthony, Katsumi, and Heidi as well as the club leader Sirius, who were all already there and seated.

Harry took the same seat he'd assumed at the first club meeting and Sirius spoke up.

"So," said Sirius happily. "Heidi, the floor is yours."

"Well," grinned Heidi, "At our first club meeting, I promised you all that I would bring in one of my vintage broomsticks. What I failed to inform you of is that the broomsticks I will be bringing in to share with you all will not be brought in in chronological order. Each time I bring in a vintage broomstick, I am choosing at random which vintage broomstick I am bringing in that day."

"That'll make it more interesting," smiled Sirius.

"Heidi." said Harry clearly, "I just want to thank you for sharing your vintage broomstick collection with us. Most people who own value collectibles aren't exactly eager to share them. "

"My pleasure," replied Heidi warmly, "It brings joy and warmth to my heart to be able to share my vintage broomstick collection with you all."

"I would guess," piped up Cedric, "That the vintage broomstick you brought in today is under your chair."

"Right you are, Cedric," confirmed Heidi brightly.

Next nanosecond, Heidi dove under her seat and came back up holding a vintage broomstick.

This broomstick appeared to have a handle made of gold and the birch twigs in the broomtail appeared to be poorly spaced.

"That doesn't look like a very good broom for flying or racing," observed Harry.

"You are very observant, Harry," smiled Heidi approvingly, "This broom was made in London in 1250."

"The spacing of the birch twigs in the broomtail is bad," noticed Scott, "They are further apart than Mercury and Pluto."

Harry, Cedric, Anthony, Katsumi, Heidi, and Sirius all laughed.

"Not to mention, " added Anthony, "There aren't enough birch twigs to begin with. There are more snowmen in Death Valley, California in mid-July than there are birch twigs in this broomtail."

Harry. Cedric, Scott, Katsumi, Heidi, and Sirius all laughed.

"This broom is certainly not well constructed for good aerodynamics, " said Cedric matter of factly.

"Most brooms in those days were homemade though," said Sirius fairly, "In those days you didn't go to the store and buy a flying broom or racing broom. Families made their own brooms and the quality of brooms available to any individual family was dependent on how skilled the best broom maker in their family was. "

"Exactly, Sirius, exactly," said Heidi bluntly, "Families that had a skilled broom maker in their family were a lot better off than those that did not."

"I think everyone has missed the biggest point about why this is not a good broom for flying or racing," interjected Harry.

"Right again, Harry," declared Heidi cheerfully.

"The handle is made of GOLD!" exclaimed Harry, "Gold is amongst the heaviest substance that exists in the world. A good flying broom or racing broom needs to have a handle made of lightweight material."

"You get it, Harry," glowed Heidi, "Unfortunately, some well off families of that time liked to show off their status by making everything out of very valuable materials."

"So, a gold broom was seen as a status symbol?" guessed Anthony.

"The maker of this broom hoped it would be," confirmed Heidi, "Unfortunately for his family, they had to retire this broom after only a single use because it could only get a few feet off the ground owing to its weight."

"Who was the maker then?" asked Scott.

"A wizard by the name of Herman Halcyon, " answered Heidi, "The Halcyons were a pure blood wizarding family, but they died out in the year 1346 as they were victims of the Black Plague."

"How did you get this vintage broomstick?" wondered Harry.

"Santa left it under the tree for me when I was six," cooed Heidi fondly, "It came with a letter of authenticity that also explained what it was and who had made it. It is unknown to me how it has existed over time other than its origin, which adds an element of mystery to the thing. I will admit that six year old me was awestruck by seeing a gold broomstick. Even now I gape at it sometimes. A golden broomstick IS eye candy, no ifs, ands, ors, or buts about it."

"Did you intentionally decide to show us a broom that ISN'T good for flying or racing first?" asked Katsumi quietly.

"No,' said Heidi in a businesslike voice, "It was chosen at random. Though, it's good to note that many brooms of the past were not of good quality. Today, nobody makes their own brooms unless they work for a broom manufacturing company. Now for the big moment."

There was a silent pause for a second and a nanosecond and Heidi said graciously, "How would you all like to hold the broom?"

Harry, Cedric, Scott, Anthony, Katsumi, and Sirius all gave off delighted expressions.

"Sirius, you can hold the broom first and then you all can pass it around and take turns holding it, " instructed Heidi.

Heidi handed the broom to Sirius, and they all proceeded to take a turn holding it.

The truth was that they were all a bit taken in by the gold broom as they held it. It was heavy but smiles and wide eyes of delight permeated their faces as they held the broom.

"It's impossible not to enjoy holding and looking at a gold broom," admitted Harry after everybody had taken a turn, "Even if the broom was useless for its intended purpose."

"A lot of collectables don't have any real use," said Heidi simply, "Stuffed animals are a good example of this. Collectors collect things for the fun of it and I'm no different. It's super cool to have a gold broom in my collection."

"It was an interesting first broom for us to see," smiled Sirius.

"I have one other thing to share with you all today, " Heidi informed the Broom Club.

Next nanosecond, Heidi reached under her seat for a second time and came back up with a tray of seven broom shaped fudge brownies.

"My mom made these for me to bring to this meeting, " beamed Heidi, "I hope you enjoy these brownies as much you enjoyed mom's pretzels last time."

Heidi passed out one brownie each to, Harry, Cedric, Scott, Anthony, Katsumi, and Sirius.

the next few minutes passed quietly as the seven of them just sat there quietly enjoying the brownies.

When it was time to leave, Harry, Cedric, Scott, Anthony, Katsumi. and Sirius all gave heartfelt smiles towards Heidi and warmly uttered, "Thanks, Heidi, " as they all went their separate ways and Heidi gave them a glowing smile and a "My pleasure." in return.
