Christian James sat quietly on a bench. The train station was all a buzz around him, people hugging and saying their goodbyes. He himself had no one to hug, and that suited him fine.
The boarding call for his train rang out through the station, the man's voice resonating on the walls. He got up and shifted his suitcase to his other hand, and straightened out his jacket.
He walked over to the second car and got in. He found a seat in one of the far corners, where he could be alone. He wanted none of the talking and laughing that usually encompassed a train ride.
He sighed and leaned his head against the wall. Five long years had passed since his life had ended, and this dreary nightmare had begun. He had nothing to sustain him through those days except for his memories and the impulse to simply soldier on. The sun did not seem so bright as it once had, and the bright colours of the Bohemian world had faded into a monotone black. After the five years, he had finally pulled himself together long enough to find himself work, and a new life.
Christian was headed off back to London, where he would teach English at a prestigious school. The only reason he had gotten the position was because of his book and his last name.
He soon dozed off into a fitful sleep, and awoke to find the familiar scenes of London passing him by. He watched half-heartedly as the trees, people and carriages went by.
The train stopped with a jolt at the station, and took him out of his thoughts. He stepped off, holding his only suitcase, and walked out of the train station. He signalled a carriage, and carried his suitcase into a new life.
