Author's notes:
This is intended to be a short prequel to 'Rhapsody no. 1'; although it can be read on its own, it makes much more sense if you read that fic first. I wasn't planning on writing this (I have a Carver fic in the works), but my Muse hit me over the head with a 2-by-4 until I promised to get it out. Go figure. *shrugs*
To everybody who reviewed 'Rhapsody': Thank you so much *blushes bright red* and I promise not to write a death fic for another--er, well, how does another five fanfics sound? :-) To daf9:
My original idea it was not
To have Detective Bobby Goren get shot!
It really wasn't me--
You can blame Emily,
She wanted a death fanfic a whole lot!
;-)

Counterpoint: a technique in composing music where two or more melodies, or variations on the same melody, are woven harmoniously together
I've got the case file for Ben Murphy; homicide, point-blank with a regular semi-automatic. It should be easy enough, except the perpetrator left no traces--all we have is the eyewitness report. I'll get Goren and Eames to handle it--
Speak of the devil. Goren sits down, passes back his old case files to me, and I seize the opportunity to tell him about the new case. He's fairly interested, so I elaborate, filling in details and showing him the evidence. And as I do, I silently observe him.
Goren's a brilliant guy--I mean, really brilliant--but weird. He probably could have been a professor in psychology or psychoanalysis if he wanted to--that's the kind of intelligence he has--but instead he comes here and catches some of the worst kinds of criminals. I can sort of see why; he's got a rough personality, aggressive, loud-mouthed, the kind that only gets you far in this job. Don't bother asking him to change. He's stubborn and determined, and gives bloody hell to anybody who challenges him.
Now Eames, his partner--outwards, she's the opposite of Goren, she's calm and cool and collected. She cracks jokes a lot; she sees the light side of things. She's smart and sensible, clear-headed and logical. But underneath she's got the same fire as Goren does, the same passion; she doesn't get angry easily, but when she does you wouldn't want to be within ten miles of her.
And that's why they work together so well--they're different on the outside, same on the inside, and they play that for all it's worth. I don't think Eames is conscious of it--I wouldn't put it past Goren, though--but it happens whether they know about it or not; they work off each other's strengths and support each other's weaknesses. It's a brilliant partnership, something to be proud of.
Not just a partnership, either; I've seen the way they act around each other, their friendly banter, their shared jokes. I've seen how unusually gentle Goren can get whenever Eames is having a bad day, or how she makes him laugh when he's having one. And I've seen Goren's eyes when nobody else is looking, least of all Eames, and I wonder if it's going to stay just a friendship much longer.
Goren's got the new case file; he stands up and leaves the office. My thoughts wander around to the case I just gave him--the old man, Ben Murphy, was shot twice in the chest.
Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my mind wheels about to a picture of Goren lying in a parking lot, bleeding to death with the same bullet wounds in his chest. I quickly banish the thought to the back of my head--and the shiver that goes with it--and get back to work again.
