What Happened In Between

A/N: Out for blood and mad as hell. This story details the way they want it.

This is how it ended: And God wept.

This is how it started: In the beginning, God created Heaven and Earth.

And this is what happened in between.

"Mommy? Why do we have to go to Church?"

Anna stopped abruptly, quickly scanning the crowd for a reaction. There was none.

"Shhh, Amnon. You know better than to ask questions."

The little boy grasped her hand and shrugged. "But Mommy, I was just-"

The woman pulled the boy onto her waist in one fluid motion and whispered in his ear, "Don't."

Amnon looked at her with confusion on his young face. "WHY DO WE HAVE TO GO TO CHURCH?" he yelled, hoping that this would make his mother answer him.

As soon as the last word left Amnon's mouth, the entirety of the crowded square turned to look at him.

Including the Soldiers of God in the corner. And later, Anna could have sworn that it had been one of them who began the chant.

"Stone him! Stone him! Stone him! Stone him!" The mob moved in closer, packing themselves in closer. Anna instinctively panicked, her instincts kicking in. Adrenaline rushed through her veins, and she subconsciously decided, in a primal moment, that it was better to flee than to fight.

However, neither was possible with this crowd. And eventually they quieted as soldiers moved to the front. One sneered at Anna, and she felt a cold streak of helplessness rush through her. *Anything but my child,* she thought. *I will give them anything but my child.*

As if hearing her thoughts, a soldier looked at her. "We are not going to hurt this child," he said, pulling Amnon away from a frozen Anna and handing the boy to his companion. "No, he has been taught wrong. You, however, are found in violation of Deuteronomy 13:13 for making a child question his beliefs. Let it be done." And the soldiers slowly pulled away, leaving the enraged crowd with Anna. To stone her.
