The Letter by BlackGoddess

A/N: I'm warning you now, it was almost one o'clock in the morning when I wrote this! But oh well, enjoy! :)

Hermione yawned and stretched, wincing slightly as her back cracked. She sat up straight again, shuffling through all the papers on the table in front of her, looking for her Arithmancy assignment.

"Hey, what's this doing here?" she murmured aloud, picking up a heavy envelope that she had just revealed. It read 'Hermione' on the front in very familiar handwriting.

Pursing her lips, she carefully opened the envelope, wary of some trick or joke. When the envelope didn't explode and nothing jumped out at her, she extracted . . . a letter.

Her heart was pounding. Why would he write her a letter? What was there that he had to say that he couldn't say to her face? Was it something horrible? Had something happened? Was he dying?

"Hush, Hermione!" she scolded herself softly, unfolded the piece of parchment and skimming the first few lines. Her eyes widened and she read more slowly, relishing the words that were so poignant she could almost taste them.

*Dear Hermione,

I know exactly what you're thinking. Why I, Ron Weasley, would bother writing you a letter. At the moment, I'm sort of wondering that myself. The truth is, there is something I really need to tell you. When I first saw you on the train, I knew I was in love - oh, I'm not going to lie to you, Hermione. It wasn't love at first siht. I don't really know when it turned to love. All I know is that I love you and I really needed to tell you. So that's my clumsy "I love you". That's the reason I'm sitting here, writing you a letter.

All my love, Ron *

There were tears in her eyes and her bottom lip was quivering. She'd never seen so much heartfelt emotion coming from Ron. And to have it directed at HER? It was incredible and flattering and . . .

Ron came bounding down the stairs at that moment, looking ordinary enough. But the moment he caught sight of the letter in her hand, his face went pale and he bolted.

"Ron!" she shouted, jumping to her feet and chasing after him.

He stopped halfway up the stairs and turned to face her, an almost wild look in his eyes. "Y-you weren't supposed to read that letter!" he stammered, his ears going red. "I-I left it down there when I wrote it and you weren't supposed to read it!"

Hermione smiled slightly.

"Ron - "

"Don't!" he cut her off. "I can't hear the rejection right now! It's too humiliating!"

"I love you, too, Ron," she called, catching his attention as he turned to go.

"You . . . DO?" he asked incredulously.

She nodded, her cheeks flushing. "Even if it wasn't love at first sight for you, it was for me."

A huge grin spread across his freckled face. "Well, why didn't you say something?" he demanded, flying down the stairs and hugging her tightly. She was about to answer him when he kissed her, right on the lips.

She decided then and there that she was very glad that he was so scatterbrained. It was awfully nice to be there, in his arms. 'And,' she thought, smiling, 'He's not a half bad kisser!"
