~*~*~*~*~*~ As I recall when my stomach turned

and I was hiding away from myself,

away from you,

like nothing but something was terribly wrong.

And I admit that I was only waiting for the right time

right moment for you to look away,

though you never did I pretended for a while

so I could walk where I don't belong ~*~*~*~*~*~

PeEll stared into her eyes in horror. He had longed to know her secrets, to discover what she knew and what could only be found by killing her, and now he had. Images flashed through his mind as the knife came down again. He saw her heal the Mead Gardens, saw her speak his name. He screamed and stabbed her again. In the back of his mind, he heard the Highlander scream also. PeEll was seeing her with Carisman, saw himself stalk away from them. He remembered wanting so many times to kill her then and get it over with. Quickening! His mind screamed at him. He stabbed her once more and stepped away, shaking. Then he fled.

I remember every word you said

come back in time come back

and I remember I was too beaten

pitiful so pitiful

~*~*~*~*~*~

In his mind, PeEll was hearing every word she had ever spoken to him. "Our time will come, PeEll," she had told him. And it had, just as he had planned all along. Only he hadn't planned it at all. She had known all along, known what he planned to do, had, in fact, planted the idea in him before he had even met her. His breathing came in short bursts and tears threatened to spill over at any moment.

~*~*~*~*~*~

But I know as they hammered those nails

into your beautiful hands,

your eyes they tried to search for mine,

but I look away.

Now your eyes are the only thing that can save me,

I'm still afraid of them piercin',

you break into my prison

just pretended for a while

my soul is sad and I walk away. ~*~*~*~*~*~

Terror rose within him. What have I done? Shades, what have I done? he thought. His legs gave way beneath him and he fell. He lay on the ground, too tired to get up. He saw her eyes as he killed her, those beautiful, black eyes. He shook his head and saw her again, her silver hair flowing down her back as she smiled at him. Shame rose in him, wrestling with the terror. He could feel her eyes, feel her looking at him. He choked back a scream and stood to run again.

He ran, casting panicked glances over his shoulder. He felt the Stiehl against his leg, its magic pulsing. Quickening's voice followed him. He heard it as clearly as if she was running beside him. She told him of the Black Elfstone, of the Stone King who had stolen it. He heard her speak and it tore at the shreds of his sanity. He ran without concept of time, of where he was, he knew only one thing, he had to get away. He had to escape her eyes, those piercing eyes that reduced his protective walls to ruins. He shook his head trying to clear it.

His foot hit a small rock and his body tumbled to the ground. He laid there, gasping for breath and then he felt the rough fur of the Koden. His first instinct was to run and his muscles tensed. Then he saw Quickening's face, heard her voice. He saw the secrets in her eyes. The Koden's arms began to squeeze and he knew that he would die if he didn't escape. Then he realized that he no longer cared.
