Disclaimer: Tolkien's, not mine. This was inspired by Lea Salonga's rendition of "Someone Else's Story", from the Musical "Chess". Lyrics below are taken from the song.
It's now or never
I could be choosing no choices whatsoever
I could be in someone else's story
In someone else's life
Someone Else's Story
Why? Why might I not gain my glory and my honour as is due to every mortal? Am I not entitled to gaining valour in battle? Nay. They say I must stay here. I must stay here and stay trapped. Do they not understand that I must ride out? It is my fate.
Please, I beg you, give me my right to die. It is my turn. It is my lot to die, and I must do it the way I would. In battle. I must perish as a Shieldmaiden, and as a Warrior of Rohan.
But they will not grant me my right. They would rather I stay here, do they not see the desperation that grows within me everyday, I have to run out and ride, else I will die. I will die. Though I will live, I will die if they keep me here.
I have heard tales of Glory. I have heard lays of Valour. I have heard ballads of Courage.
Now they will sing for me, they will sing of me. I will have it no other way.
Even if I have to live in someone else's story. Even if I have to cast aside Éowyn of Rohan. Éowyn of the Horses, Éowyn of Joy no more, there is no Joy in my heart. This is my chance, and I will take it. I must not hesitate.
I will be Dernhelm. Dernhelm, the Hidden Protector. And they will call me Dernhelm the Brave. Dernhelm the Daring. Dernhelm the Courageous.
Dernhelm the Dead.
I will earn my Valour in battle. I will earn my Death in battle.
I will live in someone else's story.
I will be Dernhelm.
And Dernhelm will be me.
Author Notes: In Old English, Éowyn means "Horse-joy" and Dernhelm means "Hidden Protector". Yes, its short. It's supposed to be short.
