"I'm sorry but a friend told me that you weren't serious. That you're in love with someone else at your school," she said. And with that, she just walked away. I just stood there like a fool. For the umpteenth time a girl turned me down and I still wasn't used to it. I was hurt, but strangely, I didn't cry. Maybe it was because I'm starting to get immuned but maybe she was right. Oh yeah! Who am I kidding? She's definitely right! But what can I do? Ayako doesn't want me. It all started out when we were both freshmen. I just joined the basketball team; it was the first day of practice. I was babbling something to Captain Akagi when I saw her. Those silky waves of hair, gorgeous eyes, the look on her face that shows all of her beauty. And in that frenzied space of a heartbeat, I already fell for her. I tried to drop her hints, to tell her how I feel but she just wouldn't budge. A friend once asked me why I keep trying too much. She hardly notices me so why would I care? I just looked at him and smiled. It wasn't that hard to explain since he was dumped dozens of times himself. I just couldn't find the words to describe it. I remember Hanamichi asking me if I ever thought about quitting basketball. "No," I answered. But after a few seconds, I changed my mind and said, "Yes, I did. But every time I see Ayako cheering and smiling and encouraging the team, I still run and try to win." "Even though all of those cheers weren't for you alone?" he asked again. "I just want to make her happy," I simply said. And that's what I'm doing right now. Practicing hard all day and night. I don't know why I try so hard to make her smile, to make her happy. Is it because she's beautiful? Is it because she's kind? Is it because, right now I'm on the mend away from the life of a gangster or a fighter, because of her? Or is it just maybe.because of her? They say that she might have her feelings reserved for a certain someone. Someone who's absolutely taller than I am. Someone who's a great defender, a great rebounder, and a great captain. Someone like Captain Akagi. If so, then let it be. It wouldn't stop me. It never will. I hear someone walking and I turned around. "Ayako," I whispered. She saw me and for a second, we simply looked at each other. Then she smiled and waved. "Ryota-kun, would you like to join us? We're going to have some ice cream before we go home," she called out. I smiled and ran to join her. "I'll wait," I said to myself. "Even if my face is etched with lines and my hair is grey, I'll still wait." And, by God, I certainly will.
