Legolas volunteered to take the first watch, he knew Gimli was exhausted and Aragorn grieved over Boromir. The man's death only a few hours ago had effected each of them, but Aragorn most of all. They dared not light a fire, for they didn't want the Uruk Hai to know where they were; surprise would be a key ingredient to the rescue of Merry and Pippin. Legolas left the clearing to scout around, while Aragorn and Gimli situated themselves.
By the time Legolas had returned, the dwarf was in a deep sleep and oblivious to his surroundings. Aragorn, however, was still awake and quite restless; he shifted this way and that, trying to find a comfortable position. Legolas sat down on a rock, watching Aragorn struggle and slowly drift into a disturbed sleep. Legolas pondered the events of the last few days; the deaths of Gandalf and Boromir bothered him. He knew he could die, but still had trouble comprehending such destruction; to a young elf, death was akin to flying trees - it just didn't happen. Legolas' mind shifted from such a dreary subject as he surveyed the trees. He missed his home and the forest of Mirkwood, and the new smallness of the group made his ache even greater.
Aragorn sat up, still in a slight daze from his fitful doze. His face was full of sorrow and remorse, full of grief. Legolas got up and quietly made his way to the Ranger. The elf sat down next to the man, and put his sleek arms around Aragorn. Aragorn buried his head in the elf's chest, seeking comfort in the gloomy night. Softly Legolas sang in elfish, a song of sorrow and of hope, while slightly rocking back and forth. Legolas cradled Aragorn as the man fell into a more peaceful sleep, his face losing its worries and troubles, relaxing into a calm state of one truly at rest.
The night went on and Legolas decided not to wake the others for their watches, he would get as much rest holding Aragorn the way he was, as he would sleeping during another's watch.
A few hours before dawn, Aragorn awoke and looked into the face of his beloved. With a soft smile, he hugged Legolas, a silent 'thank you' for helping him through the night. They stood up and embraced each other once more, enjoying what little love they could in the dark times. They stood there, watching the woods around them for a short time before Aragorn went to wake Gimli.
And the threesome went on their way to rescue the hobbits.
