SUMMARY: "I have come to terms with my demons, now let me go among them in
peace"
**************** "Do come in Severus," requested Albus Dumbledore, gesturing to the tall figure lingering in the doorway.
"Headmaster," acknowledged the potions master, sitting in the proffered chair.
"Would you like some tea?"
"No," Severus Snape replied curtly.
"Here, have a lemon drop," offered Dumbledore, the aged, paternal countenance softening further as the piercing blue eyes scoured the other's face, prodding the cracks in it's too brittle mask.
Seemingly unaffected by the invasive search, Snape declined, "That's quite alright. Forgive me for being blunt, Albus, but I assume you called me here to discuss the curse?"
Resigning himself to the impending battle with his professor's nearly impenetrable barriers, walls, and other defenses, the headmaster sighed before replying in an equally even if not ironic tone, "you assume correctly."
"Well." prompted Professor Snape.
Having decided on a course of action that he hoped would yield the desired results, the headmaster adopted a rather mild tone before asking the younger man, "Have you given the matter any thought?"
The response was explosive. "Of course," Severus hissed violently before regaining his much vaunted self-control. "Not a day goes by that I don't think about it, remember it." He paused, voice trailing off as the unspoken sequential hung between them: 'relive it.' The haunted expression retreated a bit before he continued, almost philosophical in his musings, "I am actually relieved that the whole issue will be resolved in a few months, one way or the other."
Shocked, "Surely you're not considering just giving up?" It took a great deal to surprise Albus Dumbledore.
Severus Snape answered, speaking more to himself than the concerned man before him. His voice was soft almost hoarse when he explained, "I deserve what's coming to me. It is the only way for me to pay my penance."
"Severus." gasped Dumbledore, sympathetic yet reprimanding.
"I am a thing of Darkness, Albus," he continued, once more focusing his attention on his mentor and savior. "I must not be allowed to taint such innocence. I just want the release. It has been so long." The lost look faded as the familiar cold, sarcastic visage clicked firmly into place, "I have come to terms with my demons. now let me go among them in peace!"
"That's rather maudlin of you."
"Well, with all due respect, I think I am entitled to a little wallowing as I will be dead in less than three lunar cycles."
"Not if I had anything to say about it!" the headmaster intoned forcefully before taking the younger man's hand in his own, speaking gently, "Severus, you will live to see 45, I give you my word. Never was there a more meaningful silence between the two, their past and present laid bare, electric- father, teacher, master, protector, confidant. A spark, igniting, promise for a future.
"Go visit your mother! I have some arrangements to make," the commanding and almost jovial tone broke the spell woven between them, as a hammer shatters glass.
"But my classes." Severus protested.
"Will rejoice at their good fortune," interrupted Dumbledore, the sparkle back in his pale eyes. "Now, go!" Shooing the professor from his office, jaw set, brows furrowed, the greatest headmaster Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had ever seen, set about his task.
