The initial part of this story is stolen gratuitously from Crashdown.com and converted to the past tense (http://www.crashdown.com/episodes/trans_214.shtml). I think you'll be able to tell where the continuity makes a sharp left turn. And yes, this is a crossover. ;-)

Just as Agent Duff reached out a hand to check for a pulse, Grant's chest cavity opened up to reveal a cluster of Gandarium crystals. This caused everyone to scramble in fright. A shape started to emerge from the cluster as the group watched on, frozen in fear. Michael, just coming down the stairs, shouted for everyone to get out of the room.
"Everybody out! NOW! NOW!" Michael yelled.
Agent Duff remained frozen to the spot.
Jim yelled, "Come on!"
They closed the door, locking the jellyfish-shaped object that has formed.
"Okay, whatever you're gonna do, do it quick! That thing looks pissed!" Maria exclaimed.
Michael raised his uninjured arm to the ventilation shaft by the door and began to use his powers to draw all the air out of the bomb shelter. The Gandarium object started pinballing around the room.
Then, out of nowhere, they heard a gurgly, squeaky voice yelling, "Ooh! Ooh! I've got it!"
A yellow blur carrying a long-handled net sped by, unlocking and opening the door.
In one sweeping motion, the sponge, for a yellow cellulose sponge with arms and legs, his head encased in an upside-down fishbowl filled with water, is what it turned out to be, caught the Gandarium queen in its net and turned to face the four stunned humans.
"If this doesn't get me into the Jellyspotters, nothing will!" He grinned, as he took the Gandarium queen out of their lives forever.

A/N: What's really frightening is that the continuity works out on this story. Spongebob got his water helmet in Tea at the Treedome, which ran on July 24, 1999. How the Other Half Lives, with the Gandarium queen, aired February 19, 2001, and I'm your Biggest Fanatic, in which Spongebob finally *does* join the Jellyspotters, aired three weeks later, on March 7, 2001.
